It was cold, just like every other day, but for some reason whenever she came into the city limits the cold seem to chill her even more to the bone. The houses and streets seemed less forgiving than the ice, snow and trees. They rebuffed all things natural. They forced the snow to turn to water, the stone was lifeless and impenetrable, unlike the trees that seemed to have some sort of inner warmth. The warmth that kept them alive despite the harsh conditions. Work had been slow, she had spent more time outside of the city than she had originally had planned, but that wasn’t a bad thing. She enjoyed the solitude, even if she found herself lonely a lot of the time. Being alone meant she did things on her own time, she never had anyone to answer to. She never had to do things at a certain time, or under a watchful eye, and as long as she provided, no one really cared how she did her job. She had left her home about three years ago now, to pursue her life. She never had really bought a home of her own, but that wasn’t usually an issue. Whenever she came back to the city, she usually had a room open to her at a friends. As her mind wandered on these things she questioned herself on that. Were they really friends? Even though Kita considered her more of an acquaintance? They used to be close, inseparable. They were best friends before life took over, and they both grew to adulthood. Her thoughts trailed off as she focused now on the sound of her fur lined boots on the cobblestone. They sounded heavy and muffled, not usually a sound one would associate with a female. Not the typical tapping of heals or more impractical wear.

It was settling to late afternoon and she was still undecided if she would stay in the city this night, or not. She was just reaching the outskirts of what was known as the ‘rich’ part of town, and heading to the more middle class region. Her eyes were cast out, watching her way, weaving in an out of people and doing the best she could to keep compact. She didn’t have to usually try too hard, she stood out like a sore thumb among the nobles and higher statured people, but she was also known among most, and most did their best to not so much as to brush up against her. She still wasn’t too sure if this was because she was lesser, or if it was some sort of small fear they had. It used to bother her. Now it was more convenient. She found that the more time she spent at the forests edge, the more she started to dislike people.

Growing closer to the other sections of the city, the sound of a males voice caught her ears. It wasn’t anything special, at least not to her, but she could tell he was singing? A street performer likely, and that made it even more likely she was going to run across a crowd she couldn’t easily dodge.

Niko stood at the edge of the crowd, listening to an underwhelming street performer sing one of the many variations of "The Blackwood Ballad". The performer really did lackluster, but Nikolaus had not heard this particular variation of the song before, and it was a resonant variation, drawing a good crowd. So, he endured the singing, tapping his hand against his thigh to count out the beat. Once he had this memorized, he'd do the variation some justice, he promised, brow beetling with disapproval as the singer went slightly flat on a note.

Amateurs.

The ballad itself had just reached the part where the innocent maiden was tricked into eating the poisonous green growth from the Blackwoods by her wicked aunt. Niko was pleased to see this variation didn't include some of the more colorful things that some variations said happened to the poor maiden. She simply turned a dreadfully pale shade of white and went into the Sleep of Death. The discreet description would make it suitable for a Noble's hall, as well as the lower quarters.

However, Niko started violently when he caught sight of the pale maiden herself, trudging through the street around the crowd. After the initial shock, revulsion crossed his face. Ugh!

Some of the other people in the crowd had noticed her, too, and one man also noted Niko's disgusted expression. With a drunken sway, he pushed his way through the crowd towards the Minstrel.

"Hah! Here's the Maiden, and here's the Noble, but methinks the Maiden won't be getting her kiss from him!" the drunk breathed the stench of sour ale into Niko's face, and grabbed him by the shoulder. "But we can't have that! Go kiss her, Noble!"

He shoved Niko roughly in the direction of the woman. He struggled to keep his balance but slipped on the cobblestones and ended up falling against the pale woman. There were jeers from the crowd, who found the spectacle unfolding before them more interesting than the song.

Somehow, in the pit of her heart, she knew something was going to happen as she came up on the crowd. Unfortunately, it was too big for her to bypass like she usually tried to. She kept her head down hidden in her hood of her white fur lined cloak, trying to avoid any eye contact although her ears picked up every sound. Her body was already twitching, every muscle tense as she prepared for whatever was going to happen. She should have known better... oh she should have known better.

By now, she had worked herself up so much, as she often did, that the moment she felt the male fall to her she had to fight from pulling out her knife and baring it against his throat. Of course, having someone pushed into her wasnt really that bad, nor did it warrant that much of an reaction. Her hand hovered over the sheath at her waist before she finally forced that reaction away and instead pushed one swift, extremely forceful and strong hand square into his chest. He was lighter than she expected. His clothing and height made him seem larger and by the force of her push she was surprised he didnt literally take air.

She knew this was no fault of the boys, and her eyes, ignoring him, scanned the crowed, narrowed as she let out a small growl. A sneer crossed her face as if to bare small fangs she didnt have. A feral reaction she didnt even notice she had picked up from being out so long at the forests edge. Her eyes caught the old drunkard easily and she snapped at him, daring to give people long enough of a look at her for them to realize she was a hunter. "You try that again sir, and I promise the next drink on your lips will be that of your own blood!" her words were sharp as she hissed.

Not allowing the drunk to even respond she pushed past him, and looked down to the male as she passed over him. "And you need to watch your step, boy," she taunted him through narrow eyes.

Niko found himself pushed upright none too gently, by the woman, and stumbled backwards, only to slip and end up on his rear end. He scrambled back to his feet, brushing snow from his backside as the woman growled at the old drunk. At the moment, he would have liked to do the same, but as he turned to bark at him, he realized every single person in that crowd was laughing at him. His mouth clamped shut in a thin line as he felt waves of embarrassment and anger run through him.

And then! And then she had the nerve to hiss at Niko! The biting retort came to his lips almost at the same time the realization that this woman was a Hunter clicked in his brain.

"You would do well to watch your tongue, wench!"

Too late to take the words back, and Niko didn't want to lose any more face in front of the crowd. He stood his ground, eyes narrowed at the Huntress.

She watched him keenly as he picked himself up, rather gracefully, and stood to face her. By now, she already had a pretty good feeling just how light this male was, despite his layered clothing. She stood just close enough for her heated breath in the snow to barely touch his chest as it billowed out and for a moment, her eyes held his firmly as he spoke.

She stood in silence at his words, one might have even thought he had actually put her in her place. Even though she stood there, still enough for her actions to be quite visible, her fist flew up out of nowhere and her half-gloved hand met his jaw quite squarely. It wasnt the 'Watch your tongue' that got to her, it was the 'wench' and the already heated moment. She didnt utter a word as she kept a deep, cold hold on his eyes with her own. In these moments, she felt actions were better than words. That still didnt keep her from feeling she likely over reacted, or that this might hurt her business. Normally she would care about these things, but they were in the more middle and lower class areas, not many worried about reputation in these parts.
