. . . The Great Sycamore . . .

The Great Sycamore is the largest and oldest tree present in thunderclans territory and possibly all of them. It is an excellent place to hunt, if your after
squirells and birds. Even rodents can be found scrabbling among its roots for a good bite to eat. Its branches spread far and wide over its space, and its trunk is massive. Its almost a symbol for the nature of thunderclan cats, to be sturdy in their belief and strong in their will.

Falconstar approached the massive tree with a small smirk and he looked
around the trunk and base of the tree before his ears caught the sound of
prey scuttling all along the branches and in the undergrowth around the tree.
He smiled to himself and looked towards camp to see Firepaw coming along;
"Here we are. Aim to catch a piece of prey in the undergrowth before we
ascend the tree."
He knew that climbing the tree seemed a might impossible
as it did getting back down, but the tree had always let Thunderclan cats
come and go as they pleased, and the great tree felt like home to many
Thunderclan warriors because it symbolized not only the pride of
Thunderclan, but their bravery and ability to adapt in the strangest of
situations. It would instill confidence in Thunderclan warriors when they
needed it, and would provide a safe-haven from predators if one was persued
by a fox, badger or other such creature.

It was Falconstar's absolute favourite place in the whole territory.

Firepaw scrambled silently after Falconstar, his ear alert for anything. He shook his head and focused his ear again, it was hard sometimes; as his ear needed to compensate for his left ear.

The vibrant tom slowed to a stop by Falconstar and listened carefully to his instructions. With a nod he moved forward a little bit, then lowered himself in a crouch, his senses alert. Simple hunting. Ground hunting. I can do that. There's nothing difficult about catching a squirrel that is just sitting there looking for-- His thoughts were cut off when the scent of a squirrel reached him. Perfect. Just the creature he was thinking of. They weren't big enough to be difficult but they weren't small enough to slip through your paws either. Easy prey. Usually. Unless you were distracted. Like, Firepaw was right at that moment. The young tom shook his head and looked in the direction of the squirrel, slowly moving his paws forward. He swept his eye along the ground and spotted a twig right in his path. So, careful to avoid it Firepaw stepped over the twig and turned his eye back to the squirrel. Yes. He was almost within pouncing distance and the squirrel still had no idea it was being hunted. Perfect. Well it would have been if he hadn't misjudged the position of an old leaf which crackled underpaw. At that moment when the squirrel looked up, a flash of vibrant orange fur shot forward and paws slammed down on the distracted squirrel which almost scrambled out of reach.

Shaking his head Firepaw straightened. He could have made that a much, much cleaner kill. Nerves had caused him to misjudge the position of the leaf. If he hadn't been nervous, he would have known that the leaf was in his path. The young tom looked at Falconstar and shrugged slightly, the squirrel at his paws.

The young leader smiled at Firepaw and observed the younger tom stalk and
catch his prey. Squirrels were fast creatures, and Firepaw was very lucky
that it had not scented him, or it would be long gone up the giant tree.
Falconstar noted the posture and precision that Firepaw had used when
hunting his prey, and his quick relfexes to actually make the kill. The kill
wasn't as important as the techniques used to catch it, and Falconstar was
impressed. Firepaw would surely make a good warrior for the clan.

Of course, there was one task left ahead; climbing the sycamore. Falconstar
approached Firepaw and smiled as he said,
"Very good, your technique was
nearly perfect. Now, a bit of a bravery test is in order... which is to say that
we shall be climbing this tree together. It is not as daunting as it looks, I
assure you."
Falconstar glanced at the prey before he said, "Bury that before
you start climbing."

Winking at the soon-to-be-warrior, Falconstar took his first jump up the tree
and his white claws gripped the bark easily before he started making his way
up the tree. He reached the first large limb and looked down and Firepaw
with a small chuckle before he continued to rise higher and higher, though he
made sure to keep an eye on Firepaw's advancement carefully so he could
help him if he needed it.

Falconstar waited after he had nearly reached the top, but a break in the
leave provided a place for them to view much of Thunderclan out towards
Fourtrees and even Windclan and Riverclan could be seen. The Thunderpath
border between Shadowclan was slightly obscured, but they could see quite
far despite the small obsticles. The leader took in a deep breath of fresh air
as he waited on Firepaw.

Firepaw's eyes glowed at the praise Falconstar gave him. His technique was good! It didn't even matter much that he stepped on the leaf and alerted the squirrel. It was great! Falconstar; Thudnerclan's leader said it was nearly perfect!

At the mention of a bravery test his ecstatic feeling faltered. Bravery. When I get back. I can tell Silverpaw that I was brave! Excitement began to move through him at the prospect of impressing the silvery she-cat. At Falconstar's words, he dropped the squirrel and scraped earth over it; looking up to see Falconstar wink at him and then jump. Firepaw felt his eyes grow wide as his eye saw his leader take to the tree. How high is he going?! That was the thought that had settled itself into the young almost-warrior's mind as he watched his leader ascend higher and higher.

"I'm s'posed to do that?" He muttered in surprise. With a shake of his head and a gulp; Firepaw took in a deep breath and placed his paws on the trunk, claws out and began to slowly pull himself up. When the vibrant tom was about halfway to Falconstar he turned his head and looked down; of course regretting that decision. So... far... down... His mind stammered. Firepaw flicked his ears and looked back up to where Falconstar was seated. Orange paws pulled the young tom a few mouse-tail lengths up before his tail began to quiver with fright. Firepaw shook his head and squeezed his eyes shut. There was no way he could go any higher than this. "F-Falconstar?" He whimpered softly, clinging onto the trunk for dear life.

What would Silverpaw think? Here he was, trying to prove that he was brave so he would have a great story to tell her when he returned and he couldn't even make it over halfway up the tree. It wasn't like the tree was going to shake him off. As long as he kept a hold of the trunk, he would be fine... Right? Then why was his tail shaking as if it wanted to fall off? Silverpaw'll be impressed if I make it. He reminded himself and with his eyes still squeezed shut he began to pull himself higher and higher not daring to open his eyes nor look down. Firepaw accidentally bumped into Falconstar. "S-sorry." He stammered and pressed himself up against his leader.

Leader of Thunderclan
—¤÷(`[¤* ~•Falconstar•~ *¤]´)÷¤—

The leader looked down as Firepaw called his name, and observed calmly
how Firepaw steeled his resolve and climbed up the tree until he reached
him. Falconstar smiled at him with pride before he returned his gaze out to
the beautiful view.
"You did much better than I did my first time," he mused
as he curled his tail around Firepaw for reassurance. He gestured to each
clan's territory before them as he spoke once again,
"We Thunderclan cats
surely can't swim like Riverclan, run like Windclan, or even be as clever as
Shadowclan, but we can scale great heights and defend our home with such
courage that the other clans are surely jealous of."

He looked back to Firepaw, smiling once more with his golden eyes before
he continued,
"You will surely become a warrior that Thunderclan will be
proud of, Firepaw."
He looked down and chuckled good-naturedly to himself
before he cooed,
"Now comes the real fun part... getting down... once you
climb down this tree, you really have no reason to be afraid of anything ever
again. Thunderclan cats climb down head-first, after all. Just don't let fear
cloud your actions. Focus on what you are doing, believe in the same claws
that brought you all the way up here, and this Great Sycamore will not fail to
hold you."
He looked back over the land before he paused slightly as he saw
a small hint of orange near Owl Tree in the distance.

A hopeful spark rose in his gut and hoped that Starshine might be there
waiting for him, though he was worried that it wouldn't be her, or that she
would bring him news that she had fallen out-of-love with him. But he let his
fears and worries melt away as he looked back down the trunk of the tree.
He climbed down slowly, taking his time, and making sure he kept himself
directly below Firepaw just in case the heights got the better of the tom.

Firepaw slowly allowed himself to open his eyes to see the scenery around him. As his eye grasped the nature of things, he let out a gasp. It was gorgeous. He let out a sigh and let himself find reassurance in Falconstar's tail around him. It was much less scary when you saw the beauty of things. The young tom nodded at Falconstar's words. Riverclan were like fish, Windclan like rabbits and Shadowclan like foxes. What was Thunderclan? They could climb higher than any of them. He nodded. Surely that was something to be jealous of.

At Falconstar's words he beamed. Thunderclan would be proud of him. Firepaw was briefly distracted; distracted that is until Falconstar mentioned something worth shaking for. Getting down. He had forgotten about that. It was bad enough getting up. The only thing that kept him from freezing with fright was the fact that this would impress Silverpaw. How could he impress her if he didn't make it back? Firepaw stared at Falconstar. "Head first?" He repeated. Had he just said that Thunderclan cats descended the tree head first?

When Falconstar began to go down, Firepaw took in a shaky breath and followed right behind his leader. There was no way he was going to be left up at the top of the tree alone. Being halfway up was one thing, but being at the top was another. No way in all of Starclan was he going to stay up there for the rest of his life. Once again Firepaw's nerves got hold of him at the halfway mark. He paused in his climbing, his claws deep in the bark of the tree. With a shake of his head he moved again but he misjudged the distance and his paw slipped. "Gah!" He said as a small branch poked his side. The young tom felt himself slide down and he slammed his claws into the trunk again. With shaking, everything he heaved himself onto a branch and closed his eyes, taking quick shallow breaths. "F-falconstar? How far down am I?" He whimpered, refusing to open his eyes.
