Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to make this easier? I dont want her to go outside on her own and would like her to get some fresh air once in awhile and excersize.

A.B0T is harness training her kittens, I'll tell her about this thread to see if she can give you some tips.

it pretty easy. find a harness that you like and will fit your cat then put it on her and leave it for a few hours and keep doing that for a week. give treats too so she will be somewhat happy during this training.

after she gets used to the harness put the leahs on it and just let her drag it around the house, eventually put a little weight on the leash and mayby try guiding her along with it. remember, lots of treats

Thank you! I had to readjust the small dog harness I got (they didnt carry kitty harnesses at the place I bought it) and she took to it without much struggle. And she gets tons of treats. smile Is there a way you can train a cat not to want to go outside by themselves but ok when you bring the harness out? We live in wooded area and I dont want her to get eaten. Or runaway.

Like she said, treats along with the harness. There's no harm in leaving the halter on. You can just hook the leash up and take her outside. That's what I'm currently doing with another cat. Eventually try leaving her alone for 10 or 20 minutes and check up on her again. But only if you're sure she knows to stay near home. If she ever gets scared and heads for the door let her in. It's a good sign she'll always know where to go.

I tried to take her out the porch today just outside the door and she made a beeling to come back inside. She was a stray that had lived outdoors for the first 4 to 5 months of her life and Im worried she carries some resentment towards it. She doesnt mind the harness at all, I just have to teach her to stay and come when shes called. smile

my cat sort of picked it up on his own that he wasnt allowed out the door without the harness on. i can leave the back door wide open and he only tries to walk out if he has his harness on

ive got a dog harness for my cat too. i couldnt find a cat harness large enough for him. i think i may get a cat harness for my little lady cat since she is so tiny. the only thing i dont like about the dog harness is that he can get out of it if he struggles enough but im not too worried since when he is afraid he either hides behind me or tries to go back inside.

Sweet! I hope I can train her properly. I might wait for the grand outdoor adventure when I get my own place again. For now, well just work on wearing the harness and tricks to help make the outdoors easier. And dog harnesses are much diffrent than a cat harness. I just cut off the chest strap and it looks and acts just like a cat harness. I figured that shes a little more algile than a chiwawa or daushand, so she wouldnt need that part of it. smile Thank you! I think the outside fresh air would be good for her morale during the summer months.

I sometimes think about doing harness training with my cats. Does anyone now if they would need extra shots in order to go safely outside? My cats have always been indoor kitties, and I worry that if I expose them to the outside they could catch something, or get fleas.

Personally I think all cat owners should harness train their kitties. Even if you don't want to take kitty outside regularly, it's great for things like travel (cut down on the risk of losing kitty if doors are open during stops) and vet visits. It can also take a fair amount of time to build up to being able to safely take kitty outside, so you could always start the training and get them adjusted to being on harness and leash but skip out on the going outside if it's something you're unsure about.

Shots and flea prevention would depend in part on your area and what they might be exposed to. Your vet would probably have a decent idea of what's recommended (in your area) for a kitty being exposed to the outdoors.

i just do rabies shots and flea stuff. i never leave my cats outside unattended and we are never out there for too long so i dont figure there is much of a risk
