Lakonale had woken up much earlier than she normally did today. The sun was still up even though it was close to the horizon now. Most of the time she slept straight through the sunset, completely missing it. Her family was normally asleep when she would be stretching out to start her day or rather night. Today, however, she had purposely woken up earlier because she wanted to spend time with her mommy. While her siblings got their mom during the day, it was hard for Lakonale because mommy liked to sleep when she was up. She never liked to disturb her mommy.
She watched the sunset as her siblings were lying down to sleep. It was then that she finally sat up to go by Tia. "Mommy, will you stay up a little bit with me?" Her voice was hopeful. There was lots of things she had to tell her mommy. Her adventures at night and questions she had. Plus she got to cuddle with Tia.

"Mmm?" Tia'moyo was not renowned for her eloquent greetings but this could be forgiven based on the fact that she was often in a world of her own. She wasn't a bad mother, on the contrary, she kept her eye on her children at all times, but this didn't necessarily mean she spoke to them constantly. As such, her tone was wistful (if distant) as she pulled herself back to reality and languidly turned her head towards her daughter - Lakonale, the night owl of the bunch...
Ah yes, whether Lakonale realised it or not her mother was always acutely aware of what she got up to. Tia may not necessarily have moved often from her favoured perch, but she kept her ear to the ground and ensured that every one of her offspring was safe... Long ago this would have been a foreign concept to her, but now it was completely natural - she was a mother and she had taken to it like a duck to water!
"What is it, Lakonale?" she enquired softly, lowering her head slightly to rest her chin on her paws. "Is something the matter?"

Lakonale smiled up at her mommy. She rubbed her head along the side of Tia's face with a soft purr. "I just want to tell you all the stuffs I've done." Her little body flopped over onto her side against Tia's body. She breathed out a soft sigh. There was a lot she still didn't know about the world. But she wanted to share all the stuff she now knew with her mommy.
As the sky turned darker, the hum of nocturnal insects filled the air. She licked at Tia's paws playfully before starting on the things that was on her mind. "Do you like sunrises mommy? I like them and this nice lady lion watched it with me." She nodded her head quite seriously for a cub. That lioness had been very nice to her. She liked making new friends.

Tia had known about the lioness, had she been uncomfortable with the encounter she would have interrupted it... but the lioness had meant no harm and as such, she was permitted to remain around the leopardess' cubs. Suffice to say that the protective instinct that crept up on the leopardess had been surprising even to her, but now it was simply a part of her and she was accustomed to it by now. So this was what happened when motherhood struck, you had eyes and ears everywhere and one paw prepared to claw an unfortunate soul's eyes out.
How pleasant!
"I do," Tia replied after a few moments and released a sigh. "Sunrises and sunsets, they paint such pretty pictures across the sky," she remarked and flicked her gaze briefly towards the coloured horizon. "Though I suspect a night owl like you rarely sees them both, hm?" she murmured teasingly.

Lakonale had no idea that her mommy had kept such a close eye on her. All she could remember was that her mommy seemed to be asleep every time she woke up to play. Of course, it wasn't like she had looked behind her much when she started to chase after bugs or wander off. Her attention was so easily swayed from one thing to the next.
She looked up at Tia with a confused expression. Some of the stuff her mommy was saying was beyond her comprehension as a cub. "What's a paint? And I've never seen a night owl." Her tail flicked excitedly behind her at the thought of meeting a night owl. How could she be one when she was a leopard? "Mommy, I'm a leopard not a night owl." Her fur scrunched up in a frown as she tried to understand the meaning of it.

Tia gave a soft chuckle at the naive questions, she was a little surprised but then again, Lakonale was still young and there weren't owls in the nearby jungle. As such, the leopardess really should have anticipated this confusion and selected a better example. Nevertheless it did provide her with the unique opportunity to broaden her daughter's horizons before anyone else could - if she wasn't careful, Lakonale would end up being educated by all the travelling creatures who passed by their home!
"It's a figure of speech sweetheart," she said finally and motioned to the sky. "At some point in the future you'll want to explore and when you do, you'll find other creatures who like to paint what they see, draw it...record it." she lifted a paw and waved it. "They use these, and sometimes they use their tails, claws or mouth depending on what type of animal they are," she explained. It was then that she fell silent to let this settle in before continuing.
"As for Owls... they only ever come out at night, and they're hidden in a different jungle to this one," she whispered and nodded towards the horizon. "They can almost turn their heads the whole way round, in a circle!"

Lakonale listened to her mommy explain what she meant. The term figure of speech flew right over her head. She was such a straight forward little thing that any kind of thing that deviated from what she really meant was most likely accidental. Draw and record were things she understood though. "Mommy, can we paint something one day? I want to paint bugs!" Her voice was enthusiastic. She had seen many bugs at night and would like to record all the ones she chased. It made her think of that one mean bug that had pinched her nose. That hadn't been very fun.
So that was why her mommy called her a night owl. Lakonale smiled at that. She did love to stay up all night. Her eyes widened at the thought of turning ones head in a full circle. She had to try it. So she twisted her head this way and that but couldn't pull it off. "I want to meet an owl now. How do you find an owl?" After only a second she plunged into another question out of nowhere. "Did you know lions and leopards make leopons? I want to make leopons."
