Raide attempted to hold the struggling Cyndaquil in place as she held a paintbrush covered in temporary paint over the last blue spot on his back.
“Perfect!” She complimented to the preening Pokemon with a bishop’s symbol on his back, then turned her attention to the other two in the room.
“Ready?” The trainer asked to the diverse duo. Wildly varying degrees of enthusiasm were expressed in their responses, but she deemed their costumes acceptable. Scyther was a somewhat sulky knight and Nell was a tiny and cheerful rook with a crown of her own.
“Alright, then. It’s our turn, well, almost, I think.”Raide took off her smock, picked up her props, then started the performance. As she walked out in a supposedly regal manner, she unrolled a large checkerboard carpet by kicking it with her feet along the way. Scyther tagged quietly behind her. A simple classical tune started up in the background and Raide turned around to see her two smaller Pokemon emerge stealthily from behind the curtain and begin to use watergun and ember to make a soft fog-like steam to encircle the stage, obscuring their props from the audience’s view.
Raide stopped once the curtain was fully unrolled and made her way back to the center of the stage, walking in a straight line while holding up a colored tile. When she recognized that she was in the correct position, she moved to the side and placed it in the square she previously stood on. She moved only in straight or diagonal lines, stopping and placing a tile before changing direction. Scyther joined her after a few tiles had already been placed, jumping around in an ‘L’ shape as he deftly placed his own tiles.
They stepped back, revealing the unmistakable shape of a Pokeball. A sound of recognition went up around the crowd. Good. Now that they got the idea, they could go into their more complicated maneuvers.
Raide and Scyther moved as quickly as possible, still maintaining their set patterns, to the edge of the stage where their next stack of tiles waited for them. Simultaneously, Nell and Cyndaquil both ran out ahead. Both of them pushed their tiles on wheels, seeing as they were too big for the small Pokemon to move around otherwise. Cyndaquil moved in a diagonal pattern on the black tiles, while Nell moved only in straight lines. When Scyther and Raide rejoined the group, they had the Knight, Queen, Rook, and Bishop all in one place. They continued to set tiles, mostly of red, orange and yellow. Once they added a flame to the tip of a tail, the image was an unmistakable Charmander.
“Go ahead, Cyndaquil!” The fire-type Pokemon shot a flamethrower as high as he could into the air from his place at the ‘Charmander’s mouth. Raide and Nell ran across the stage and flipped the double-sided tiles while Cyndaquil and Scyther added them. Now it was a Pikachu.
“Now Nell!” Raide called, her voice disguised by the music playing in the background. The Chinchou used a Thunder Wave near the Pikachu's red facial markings, allowing it to spark outward like it was charging up.
They had two more things to take care of, and they wasted no time getting the first done. Pikachu was soon covered in mostly bluish tiles, and a friendly smile replaced the inquisitive look on the pixilated-looking face. Nell ran as fast as she could in a square shape around the recently formed Squirtile image, shooting the most basic of basic moves, a bubblebeam, all the while.
They had just one more move to work with. Nell and Cyndaquil met in the middle of the stage, firing a water gun and a flamethrower to once again make steam. This time, it obscured most of the movements, leaving only the outlines of shadowy figures to be seen. Scyther used a combination of double team and evasion to get around the stage quickly, placing as many tiles as he could. Raide just ran as quickly as she could without tripping over her skirt to get her part of the task done. Cyndauqil and Nell stayed in the middle, making steam most of the time, but also occasionally firing up short bursts of electricity and fire to keep things interesting. Finally, Raide finished and looked over at Scyther. He was still.
“Go, Cyndaquil!”Cyndaquil silently sent up a sunny day that cut straight through the steam. Scyther and Raide made a mad dash for the middle of the stage. They made it right as the stage was clearing and the image was revealed. The three legendary birds, though slightly crude due to them having to fit all three in the same space, looked up at the crowd as they ‘flew’ in a circle, chasing each other’s tails. The music faded and stopped.
Yes! Raide thought.
Perfect! They bowed as well as they could and walked off of the stage, Raide taking the time to roll the carpet up on the way out.
That was much better than rehearsal! They were all very pleased with their work.
