Nighttime wasn't the best time to go creeping around in the dorms; especially not with previous experiences, but apparently one particular life trainee hadn't learned from her lessons. As long as there were things to clear, she was determined to do her job; plus there were other hunters on patrol, other hunters who were working just as hard, if not harder- and she felt like she owed it to the others to, well, help out as much as she could.

This time it was the upper levels she was headed to, and in particular, there was one door she was searching for- Julie's. She didn't have anything for the moon hunter, no offerings of flowers or cookies to leave at her door, no reason to be there, really, other than that she just maybe wanted to say goodbye properly.

They hadn't quite.. had a chance back then.

He’d come for a few things. His journal, his watch, and also to just have some time to himself. The underground was crowded, loud even when it was ‘quiet’. It didn't help that he was having large bouts of guilt for how he'd acted. Running a hand down his face, he sat on the stairs, wondering if he should go after some of the nasties, or just head back. He had his things, and he didn't plan on killing anything but-

Noise from the floor above and he figured if he didn't then he was doing a piss poor job of being a hunter. As he reached the floor, two things came into view, one life trainee, and one creature. "Evening Reine." He gave a small wave as the creature bound up to him, striking out. A small swipe across his arm before he managed to cut it in half. "Didn't expect anyone to be clearing this place out so late."

She hadn't noticed him initially, nor the insanity creature, her hand lifted to Julie's door as if she had been thinking of knocking on it- only to realise that this room, like all of the others in the dorms, was vacant. The difference, she thought, her stomach twisting into a knot, was that this room's occupant would never come back again.

The sudden movement startled her and she sprang backwards warily, tears spilling down her cheeks- hastily she wiped them away, this was no time to be weak, not with all the monsters lurking.

"Evening," she returned, managing a shaky smile as she walked over to him. For a moment, when he first attacked, she'd thought he was one of the more humanoid monsters; the sight of a hunter she was familiar with, though, gave her the slightest bit of comfort.

"I just couldn't sleep," she explained, embarrassed to have been caught here. "So I thought I'd wander around for a bit, and somehow ended up here."

Somehow.

"You?"

Not sleeping was something that pretty much plagued them all as of late, but Marcus wasn't sure about the wandering around at night deal. Much less on the second floor of the dorms. Leaning a bit on the wall, he took a second to glance behind him. They were fairly safe, for now at least. He didn't notice her tears, just a bit of red tinging her face.

"You should probably come out with someone else this late. But then I'm hardly one to talk." He smiled before he looked to the door. A sudden realization hit him as the numbers clicked with a face. With a body filled with bugs. "I wanted to get a few things...get out from the crowd. Just some time alone. Or, as alone as I could get." Motioning to the door, he sighed. "Were you uh... You close to her?"

"I sorta thought about it," she laughed, trying to cover up the lie. Maybe she would have felt safer with someone else around, but she'd wanted to be alone for a while- or at least she thought she had; Marcus' presence, even though they weren't close, made her feel just a little better.

A little less lonely, or empty... empty. Of all the words to think of- Reine choked a little, bringing her hand up to cover her mouth from the sudden attack of nausea; all she could see now, again, was Julie's body, hollowed out, and all the bugs crawling oh god no no no n--

She was almost thankful for the creature that leapt up to claw at her face, a timely distraction. The swordbreaker slashed out in an arc, cutting through the creature; it screamed, in its usual whispery voices, recoiling and reforming.

"Not.. that close," Reine answered, still keeping her eye on the creature and readying herself for another attack. "I don't know if she actually knew me, she was.. a little eccentric, you know? Called me Sally Earthwalker. We baked cookies together once, for Christmas."

That was the Julie she wanted to remember, all smiles, always cheerful, no matter what, with the little hearts on her apron and her rainbow hairclips.

He nodded. "It's been rough. Everybody has been out of whack that last week so-" a glance at the creature, hobbling to get up, "it's not like the caves have been super comfortable." He'd made his own life miserable, listening to the voice, worrying about Cass, about if he was wanted, needed.

He'd gone and made himself lonely then and in turn had made Cass think he didn't love her, he made her miserable, hurt her. And that had in turn made him feel worse. But he and her had talked, they understood, and they planned.

Those plans were why he would push past it, and fight for the future. Their future specifically.

As the thing jumped at him, he swat at it, send it against the wall momentarily. "Earthwalker? Well Sally, my name was John Windwalker. She was-" He remembered her smile, her stupid smiling faces, her way of sending them on missions yet somehow he couldn't hate her for them. Julie had in retrospect, been kinder than many hunter superiors.
"She was a pretty remarkable person."

"Pretty much. Still struggling to get used to the underground base- I'd rather spend my time up here, really, even if it's infested. Makes me feel better, y'know, doing something that's actually useful?" She frowned at him, a little worried. "How've you been?" She hadn't seen the older hunter in a while- not something she would normally be concerned about, considering they were mere acquaintances, but it was always nice to see a familiar face.

The fog-creature faded back into the fog for a moment and Reine looked around wildly- where had it gone, it wouldn't come back bigger, would it? Or bring friends along? The life trainee couldn't help but laugh at Julie's nickname for Marcus, though; apparently she wasn't the only one who got this treatment.

"She was, yeah. I think she was stronger than most of us, in some way."

Once again the creature re-formed, swiping at her with its claws, and she yelped, jumping back a few feet. She'd get it next time, she swore.

Kicking out at the creature, Marcus felt his body slump with the depressing thoughts. "True. Better than sitting idle. As for how I've been... He shrugged. "Cass and I had a fight, we made up, a bit depressed but getting over it. The usual in a way."

The tiny think skittered along the floor, hiding rather well in the mostly blank hallway. As it launched itself at Marcus this time, the kick sent it slamming into the wall. ".....I'd be careful if you go in her room though, a bit of a hazard zone."

"Cass?" Reine furrowed her eyebrows a little, the name seemed familiar-- oh, right, that was Marcus' girlfriend. She didn't think she had a face to put to the name, though, not that that really mattered.

"Wanna talk about it?" Admittedly the offer was slightly selfish- if Marcus wanted to share, it would help take some of her own worrying away. She was, though, genuinely worried- every time she'd met Marcus he'd seemed cheerful enough, to the point of being obnoxious. Everyone had their down moments, sure- but if Marcus needed a pick-me-up somehow, Reine wouldn't mind trying to cheer a friend up.

"Romantic relationships are hard," she murmured, surprising herself with the statement- it wasn't as if she would know, never actually having been in one. There was, though, some sort of resentment she connected with the whole idea of it, though she couldn't quite.. remember why.

"Oh, it's-- yeah. I was in there before, baking with her. That was something pretty special." Reine stifled a chuckle, her hand reaching out to touch the door.

"I'd rather not, though. I mean, it's personal, right? I'd.. feel bad snooping around. It's just enough to.. be here, I guess. I wish we could have brought her back at least. Back... home."

(oh danse ilu)

"It's.... complicated but not? She- she wants us to sort of... s**t." It was hard to even say it. "She wants to get married and... I want to as well but frankly it worries me." Hands went up in the air. "It's dumb and stupid but I can't help but wonder if I'll make her happy and if I'll be a good husband. She says I will but augh."

He let out another cry of frustration as he aimed to hit the creature. "......Julie didn't deserve that. She deserved a hell of a lot better. Why the ******** do things have to be so damn complicated sometimes?"

"Married?" The word brought a small frown to her face, and she looked at Marcus, slightly concerned. Marriage was.. well, usually a huge deal, she supposed. She'd never thought about it much, herself- and not just because there wasn't anyone to think about getting married to. School and her future career had been far higher up on the priority list- in some sense, they still were.

"Uhh.." She reached out a hand to pat him on the shoulder reassuringly. "You'll do fine? If she says you will, trust her. Relationships are built on trust, right?"

Way to be cheesy.

At least Marcus was getting distracted by another one of the monsters, appearing by his feet. The poor guy, it seemed, was attractive not only to his girlfriend, but also Insanity creatures.. so far, the ones that appeared had all gone after him. Luckily they'd all been tiny creatures, taken out by just one hit.

"She really didn't," the life trainee agreed softly. "I don't think any one of us does." It would have been nice to be able to say everything was going to be fine, but- her own life was complicated as well. All they could really do was struggle through it.
