I know one
MMO: Runescape. It's free, but comes with a membership trial of 14 days, then it reverts you to a free-to-play ((ftp/f2p)), and you can keep playing

A good mmo on the pc is APB reloaded. It's an rpg too, but it's not that big. Honestly it's like playing cops and robbers. You pick which side you want to be and you do missions against each with other players. It's fun and you don't have to pay for membership if you want. If you do all you get is more money and more xp from missions. You need a good pc or laptop to run it

I tried a few different MMOs over the years and Final Fantasy XI is the only one I really stuck to for 8ish years. I know it's old now so you may want to wait for FFXIV 2.0 to come out instead if you want a new MMO, but FFXI still has a lot of people playing. This month there's a new expansion that is coming out for FFXI (after 5-6 years since the last one). The new expansion will definitely bring players back to the game and give everyone something new to do.
Even if you are a new players now it's quick to catch up compared to years ago when the grind was quite heavy. There's a monthly subscription if you're okay with that and you can probably purchase the entire ultimate package with all expansions on steam or something for less than $20.
