Are there any other wildlife foster parents here? I currently have my license to foster foxes, bats, raccoons, skunks, squirrels and such, although I specialize in very young and sick raccoons. I've been at it for quite a few years now and am really excited to see about taking my exam to run my own wildlife sanctuary. heart

How does on get a license to foster such animals? I'm curious. =) It sounds like a very rewarding job to have.

i want to legally get into someday. right now all i do it take in wild animals people find and just take care of them until i can find a rescue thats able or willing to take them in. i got stuck with a baby crow for a week since everyone in the area was filled up with birds at that time. even though he didnt make it he was my favorite rescue.

i get stuck with birds the most often so i feel a bit more comfortable dealing with them than baby mammals. reptiles are pretty easy for me too but i dont get many of them.

I work through the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, from there I had to take a written exam through the Ministry of Wildlife (It's a pretty thick exam which is a fill in the blanks), get my rabies vaccine which is about $900 per person (It's not just a one time needle, you have to get 6 in the hip and keep going back regularly for a few weeks to get more in your arm). It's a very rewarding thing to do, but it does take all your time and a lot of work. The babies start out needing to be fed and stimulated (When they're really young they can't go to the washroom on their own yet) every three hours day and night. It eventually turns into just day feedings then eventually weening, but that takes some time to get to. It's not something you would be payed for, if anything I used to spend about 200per week on formula until I found a place I could buy in bulk. It is very rewarding though, especially when you get to see them be released. They're always so happy and it melts your heart. heart It's not for everyone as the responsibility is extremely high, but if it's something you love and are fully good and able to do, it's one of the best things. emotion_c8

If it's something you like to do it's very much worth going into it legally and working through a sanctuary. I used to do the same thing with fostering and rehabilitating everything that came my way, but going through the resources that are available I learned quite a lot more than I thought I would (Even just for different things to feed and medicate with that I never would have thought of have turned out to be extremely helpful in turning sick babies around). I'm sorry to hear your crow didn't make it. Sometimes the oddest of animals to head your way can be the ones that leave the biggest imprint though.

I haven't fostered much for birds, I used to have a neighbor who would try and breed birds and hand the babies off to my mother, so I looked after a few. I find the birds are a bit harder care, but still rewarding. 3nodding I would love to get into reptiles as well. heart

im atempting to volunteer at my local park in their rehab area so i can do it legally and not in my own house.

most of what i had learned was from stalking people at the zoo i used to volunteer at when i was younger, they would rescue local wildlife from time to time which was where they got most of their animals. i learned how to feed baby birds from the people there which was much more usefull than trying to danlge a worm in front of one like some places on the internet say lol and im great at getting back to sleep so i didnt mind having to wake up twice every hour to feed the little guy when he started yelling for me
