A selkie. A fisherman. A sea of distance in between.

A sea of emotions in between...

But the sea is the air she breathes. A selkie would always return to her sea. Even in her thoughts. Long after she has shed her selkie skin to pay the price of human love.

When the waves come lashing upon the shores of sand, what would bind them together ?

What would bind them apart ?

The sky an ashen gray, velvet unfolding to smother the twinkle-points of starlight and herald the pale hues across the horizon. Pinks, flaming oranges and reds, delicate kelp-greens and a million others that she could not name. But what were mere words to describe the indescribable? Nature had no use for petty human classifications - no need for definitions and rules to guide her creations. Here where she stayed, the very borders vanished, rough shingle and the lapping waves melding. A high call of a bird rose above the singing waves, before disappearing into the sea's morning roar.

And it was quiet, the air thrumming with heartbeats and imaginary footsteps. But at the next crash of cerulean and lace, the water formed a figure at the cliff's edge. Wild and unmoved by the screaming winds and bitter salt-spray, calm to the sea's icy touch. For all she had known, he could have stood there for a million years. Like her, he was listening, head angled in the wind to catch the merest whispers of the deep. A silver swish of a tail. Silken fins.
But he was a hunter, and his prey dear to her.

Another sweeping tide-fall, and he was gone, off the slick sloping granite and into the surf. It was the strangest feeling, much like the full moon. A strange brightness, tugging at her core. Willing her to swim into the gaping cave-maws, where her swift companions lay obliviously, waiting for their hunter. For the caves were dangerous to all - the land-dwellers, the strange ones that were loud and curious, and those of the town. Even to her. Only the most careless or brave dared set foot there, for the glistening granite could cut both ways.

XX ❝ The days of thunder cry their goodbye
And for the first time I know what to do... ❞

Glistening dew-drops melting in the frosty sea. The salty scent of an unnamed mistress. Sultry. Silent. Sombre in exaltation.

The reclining footfalls of the incessant waves was but a calm rhythm to him. Stormy, but smooth. Like the scoffing breath of a feline predator. A serpent undulating to her charmer, untamed, a rhythm of deadly devotion. Despair surpassing obedience. A rhythm to survive. And survive for.

He shivered. The wind was high. Impulsive and unthinking as ever. Flowing ever so lightly to arouse his aquarian lover. A whisper of invitation. An eager thunderous roar. An escapade that would lash the mortal shores in sheer agony. A lullaby to the ending night in his wake. The sea was as helpless as the fallen man. But this was no lullaby. Nor was this a dirge. Just an unfulfilled mourn. The abyss of submerged dreams reflecting back in the sunlit threads.

Nature was as hapless as her forsaken children. The same rules existed for man, the same unnamed agony. The same withered escapism called hope. The ethereal burst of spring every turn of the passing year.

And he looked up. His eyes eager, curious in natural response to the call of the infinitum. Tomorrow. To the strange explosion of a myriad of emotions, vibrant, vivid, blinding, in the eastern horizon. The sky was bleeding. The sky was blushing. The sky was hoping. He looked up. His exhausted muscles rose to wipe the salt away from his brow hastily, ignoring, for one flicker of a moment, the tumultuous sway beneath his trembling feet.

The scorned sea would never forgive the impunity of a frail plank on the expanse of her raging floods. His fingers tightened around the butt of his fishing pole in strong, sinking fear. The ancient perpetual struggle against identity, or the loss of it into the unknown endlessness, where nothing, not even sense or consciousness was preserved. A fear that was as insignificant yet omni-present as life. Much like his moody assaulter. Nothing was as weak as water, yet as strong to uproot you from what you held dear. Like a speck of dust in the wind. A candle flicked away by the wave of a derisive human hand, oblivious of how the wick would painfully wear into shreds of ash.

Yet the cerulean gleamed in invitation. A siren in her seductive smile. A songstress in concentration of each solitary note. Beauty as eternal as its numerous forms, all in one, distinct and fading. Unknown surfaces, unseen to man, concealed under the covert pride of a protective mother, deep underneath its engulfing depths. Calm…serene…

He fell. Like a whiplash of his weapon towards his silver preys of the deep. Unbidden. The water rose to touch his face in utmost gentleness, and then his feet, till his body slowly yielded to the icy embrace. Unrestrained…

XX ❝ Loving and fighting this mirror I need
Waiting to see whereto the storm leads... ❞

An echo of sound, the harsh building screams muffled in soft melody. A raging vortex, submerged in the calm depths. And once more, it was still. Quiet. Dull, almost. There was the opressive heat, not her usual calm, cold touch like the first rains of the year. The sea sang in delight, rolling the notes round and round in soft wreaths. Flood-gates opened, the relentless rush of liquid spilled onto the rough land, soothing it. Calming it. Inviting, calling to the land in eternal song. But dry, hard rocks would not yield, splitting the crystal surf. Faster and faster. Persuasive. And then, over sinous, melding time...

Light filtered greenly into her world, alien and frightening. The pressure on her bare skin ceased to comfort, what was once a mother's embrace becoming cold and foreign. Unnamed crags and skeleton spires loomed emptily.
                            Fear?
Not here. The kaleidescope of colours spun and faded, reuniting in clarity. And yet, for a moment, she'd understood. The terror of her home explained through his eyes.

There were those who could not join her in the waves. There were those who were friends, and there were those who could - for a fleeting moment, believe that they were one with the ocean. And she could believe too, different as he was. Earth-bound. Cleft.
