If you were (or are) to write a book, how would you do it? I'm curious as to how many different ways a good book or story can be put together. It varies for me. Usually I just write scenes as they come into my head, and then I string them together until it makes a necklace of a good story. Then I kind of go through it and make sure it flows-- I use the diagram/graph/thing my teacher went over in English class. Its goes something like Exposition (Intro) --> Rising Action (Longest part of the story, if I remember correctly.) ---> Climax (The big fight/change!) ---> Falling Action ---> Resolution(? ...I can't remember the exact word. I'll check later.) Or depending on how long the piece of writing is, I may come up with an idea and write a quick idea/summary of the subject I have in mind, then go in and fill in details later. For what I've been working on lately, I've been alternating between the two. I have the main idea written, but I'm also writing the scenes as they pop into my mind and adding details here and there as I go on. Soo, how do you other people put together a story? I'm curious! 3nodding

I go all over the place, lol. I usually start with a scene or idea that I have in my head and if it starts really going somewhere I find I get obsessed with it and think about it all the time. And I start an outline with each chapter and general things I want to happen in those chapters and I write out scenes as they come into my head and then I string them together, sometimes scrap scenes altogether.
If I'm blanking one day or just seem unable to write, I focus on writing the character bios for my characters or doing 'interviews' with them, where I actually write it out in prose and not just a list of questions that I answer as the character.

I kinda just make it up as I go, but I make all the characters before hand. Usually the main character is kind of a shadow of myself and some of the secondary characters are based on my friends, and sometimes enemies. When I get bored I usually end up thinking about my stories and when I think it's a good Idea I run and grab my notebook and write it down so I can use it later. razz

The way I write is sometimes I will come up with an idea and a scene that goes along with it soon after or maybe the scene will come first and I'll form an idea around that. After I've got an idea and a scene, I usually come up with the main characters and their families. Then, I hop around, writing major events that will occur all throughout the novel. After I've exhausted my main events, I try to come fill in the holes. It may not be the most efficient way of writing a novel, but it works for me (most of the time). As for characters, the main character is usually a shadow of what I wish I was and the others may be a mix of people I've met in real life and people I've met in books.

Seems like a lot of people's characters in their stories reflect either themselves or people they know. It's the same for me, pretty much too. I also get ideas for characters or aspect of characters from other books that I have read.

I often have a general idea of how I want the general flow of the story to go and I piece it together from there

I just think over certain scenes that would come to my head, then build off of it, change some things, add, maybe delete some things. Then I would get it on paper or my computer or something, then squeeze it into my story somewhere. Sadly, I've only really been thinking about my characters' pasts. rofl

Personally, it really depends. Two of my stories sort of just came to me one night...yet I'm plotting them out differently.
My first one I'm considering scrapping because I don't know quite where to go with it. I might just put it up here, except for the fact that it's long >< But if anyone would like to look at it for giggles, I can either share it on box (I think that's what it's called) or do e-mail. It really is way too long to put on here.
For this one, though, I plotted out some of the conversations on paper and then while putting it on the computer, I sort of fit the scene around the dialogue.
The second one just sort of came to me while on the computer (I always get story ideas when playing the Sims). I like this one because it feels so natural and it actually flows.
The third one I'm writing I originally had everything written out...then it got thrown away.
Then, I started writing it down and putting it into a binder...I even have character sheets, definition sheets...I'm going to also see if I can get a really good artist friend to help me see my characters. I even wrote my first chapter already and had it critiqued.
I hope this satisfied your curiosity ^^

I do my stories based on experience.
I.E: My Character, Connor Erebus is apparently my Doopleganger and he is the response to Politics, History, and everything going on in my life. And usually I watch shows and kind of use that for my story ideas. CSI is my favorite because I need the conflict of criminals in my MotD. And I usually do Rps and based them in my story as well.
So techincally..I go by experience and my opinions of everything around me.

With my stories everything is made up as I go along. I'll type up the story, sorta rushed, just to get down the major events and then I'll go back through, read it and delete/flesh out things that need it.

I normally just have an idea pop into my head (normally before I fall asleep too) I jot it down, then begin writing the story and let it flow from my finger tips.I never really plan, I find it pointless and when the story comes to a close I end up going back an editing the story to hint towards information divulged somwhere later on in the story! Planning just . . . doesn't appeal to me. I write as the story comes in my head!
