She crept up on her quarry. Tail flicking, eyes narrowed, she crouched close to the ground, careful not to make any noise. The only sound was her soft, concentrated breathing as she cautiously wiggled forward. A little more, a little more...

"Gotcha!" With a less than subtle shout, Linzie emerged from the long, dewy grass and flung herself at the bright blue feather sitting on a rock nearby. She hit it front paws first, grasping the object with her front claws and bringing it to her mouth.

Giggling, she began to roll in the grass. Today wasn't a day to be serious, as far as the cheerful lioness was concerned. No, today would be a day of fun and of play. After all, life got pretty boring if she didn't let herself relax every once in a while! Of course, for Linzie, most days were for fun. There wasn't much in Linzie's world that worried her.

The warm sunlight was perfect for Djal as he stretched lazily out on his back. Normally, you would expect a lion to have their face against the warmth of the flat rock, absorbing the gentle heat that radiated from it. But Djal?
He was belly-up, legs thrown to his sides to warm his squishy belly in the sun.
A sound caught his attention, and his brilliant blue hues opened slowly, adjusting to the bright light before settling on movement nearby. A quick yawn and he rolled onto his side, flicking his tail lazily and eyeing the blurry object.
A soft smile later and he stood, stretching himself out every way possible before he hopped from his perch, making no effort to remain silent. He was curious about the blob of color, and the closer he got, the better the shape of a lioness emerged from the grass.
Welp, might as well say hi.

Linzie was so immersed in her game that she didn't notice the sounds of a stranger approaching for a good few moments. The feather was not much more than a ragged mess now, but some of the least touched parts still shone in the sun.

As soon as Linzie noticed Djal's approach, she scrambled back to her feet and stared, the feather hanging out of her mouth. Impulsively, she dashed away from him and ducked behind some of the longer grass and bush, but the patch of foliage was so small, it only hid her face.

She was rather shy when it came to strangers, but she was also curious. It had been a while since she had come across another feline, and Djal didn't seem very threatening. Thinking about saying hello, she popped her head out from the bush, just to duck immediately back behind it as nerves got the best of her.

He watched her and smiled, plopping down on his big butt to wait patiently for her to approach him. Not much else he could do, since he didn't have a voice to call out to her with.
He sighed lightly, tail twitching before watching a bug cross his paw. Blinking at the random emergence of the small critter, he held his paw up to his face and watched it go from wrist to toe, shaking his head with a wrinkled nose before allowing it passage back into the grass.
A brief moment of distraction, but he quickly flicked his gaze to the lioness again, wishing he could say something; ANYthing.

Linzie's body twitched uncomfortably from her position. This wasn't cozy at all! Some kind of rock kept digging into her side and the long grass occasionally tickled her nose in the wind. Before she knew what she was doing, she started oozing out from behind the brush to watch Djal. The insect proved to be a good distraction for her, and she watched it crawl around in silence until Djal released it back into the grass, which is about when Linzie couldn't hold herself back any longer and let out a giggle.

The ice broken, Linzie let her body escape her hiding place fully, and she stretched out on the grass in front of Djal. She rolled around a bit more, looking up at him with a bright spark in her blue eyes.

"Hi there!"

Djal smiled, unable to do much more. He opened his mouth, but quickly shook his head and touched his throat. Hopefully, she would catch on. If not, this was going to be one heck of a day.
He lightly tapped her on the head and looked around before looking back at her, questioning if she was out here alone or there were friends in the grass. He tended to stay out of large crowds, since he couldn't bring himself to say anything to them.
This brought up another point; how the heck was he going to tell her his name. He wrinkles his nose, lost in his own thoughts for that brief moment.

Linzie was wondering what his throat-pointing meant and laughed when he tapped her on the head. "Hey!" she exclaimed, rising to a sitting position and wiping her head with her paw. Then, she used the same paw to point at Djal's throat, coming very close to touching him since she didn't care much for personal space.

"I don't know what this means," she admitted cheerfully. "Are you out here by yourself?" Unlike him, Linzie would have been delighted to meet a big group of lions... if she didn't go and hide first. But her curiosity usually got the best of her shyness eventually.

One new friend, however, was better than none!

"I'm Linzie, by the way."

Djal pouted. This wasn't going to end well.
He folded his ears back and sulked openly, merely shaking his head when she asked if he had company. He lifted his gaze slowly, absorbing her name. Linzie. If he could speak, he would openly praise her on it. But sadly he could not. Instead, he nodded lightly and offered a tiny, sincere smile.
He suddenly got an idea and looked around, settling on a tiny twig and holding it up triumphantly and pointing to himself, then the twig.
His name meant twig, right? So if she would call him Twig, it would be the same thing, in his mind.

Linzie smiled at him, trying to encourage him when he sulked and shook his head. She wondered why he wouldn't speak, but then she came to the conclusion that he was shy. After all, she could be shy too at times! Maybe he would say something once he felt more confident. The way he sulked made her think he wasn't feeling too self-assured yet.

Linzie tilted her head and watched curiously as Djal triumphantly retrieved a twig. Oh, he was trying to tell her something! The way he pointed at himself, then at the twig... His name?

"Oh, is your name Stick? No that's silly.... Branch?" She tried to figure out if maybe he meant the species of tree it was from, but the name of it escaped her. "Uhh.... Wood? Twig?'

The minute she uttered 'Twig', he quickly put his paw on her nose and nodded repeatedly. YES! THAT WAS IT! he screamed in his mind, and he gestured to himself yet again, beaming proudly. Good, that was out of the way. Not perfect, but since there really wasn't anyone who knew him by name, she'd never get it completely right, so this would do.
He tried to move into conversation, looking around then back to her, his eyes asking a thousand questions in a single glance. Where did she come from? Was she alone like him?
Sometimes it was just no fun to not have a voice, but he was going to make this meeting last more than a few minutes.

"Twig! Hehe, that's silly! But it suits you," Linzie complimented, grinning at him. She was beginning to like his company. He seemed like a really nice guy so far, even if he was pretty quiet. Oh well, she could be the talkative one. She felt like talking, anyways.

"So Twig... all by yourself out here... Are you from a pride?" She was curious, since she had never been a part of a pride herself and sometimes she wondered what it was like. But, she was rather attached to her wandering lifestyle, so she couldn't imagine settling down in one place, either.

"I've been alone out here for... well... my whole life! Same with my mother, and my mother's mother, and so on." She explained, twitching her tail and enjoying the feeling of the sun on her back. Which was one of the reasons she loved it out there so much.

He shook his head with a pout, his ears folding back against his head. Being alone was terrible.
She was so happy about it that he couldn't stay mopey-looking. He quickly perked up, puffing out his abnormally fluffy chest and offering a smile before leaning over and giving her a soft push, retreating a few butt-scoots away.
He didn't have company EVER, and he was feeling cub-like at the moment. She seemed the type to go along with it, at first glance. Time to find out, he mused.

Linzie was so used to being alone, it didn't occur to her that some lions didn't appreciate solitude as much as she did. She looked at him with a puzzled expression, feeling sympathetic for him. But the moment passed quickly and, while she was still immersed in thought, he gently pushed her and quickly retreated. The push wasn't hard enough to budge her much, and she immediately giggled.

"Oh how that's how it is, huh?" She smirked, baring her teeth in a playful challenge and assumed a crouched position, her tail way up in the air. "You won't beat ME without a fight!" Linzie taunted cheerfully, waiting to see what he would do next. It was nice to see the quiet guy taking some initiative!

He swatted in her direction and bounded a few feet, turning to see if she was following, before taking cover in taller grasses. What he'd not accounted on, however, was the fact that he was still very much a big oaf of a lion, and he stuck out like a sore thumb despite his best efforts. He managed a silent huff and turned back on his 'prey', crouching low in hopes that he could at least surprise her a little when she attacked.

Linzie couldn't help but stare briefly and laugh at his attempt to hide, but she tried to hide her amusement by looking this way and that, as if she had lost track of him. After all, she liked games, and what fun would it be if the game ended early?

Besides, she had tried to squish her body behind a tiny bush not long ago, so she couldn't really say much about his hiding skills.

"Hehe... Twig, where did you go?" She said, sitting with her back to him and raising a paw to her face to try to hide her smile. "You can't just start something and then run away! Finish what you started, silly!"

She took a quick glance backward to see what he was doing, then focused on the trees and foliage ahead of her, to play up her ruse. "Maybe he went that way?" Linzie pretended to think about it, while wiggling her tail this way and that to try to coax him out of hiding.
