Afternoon was a lovely time of day. It was nice and warm, full of life and energy, and it was the optimal time to play. At least, that was what Lyra though. Her short, dark brown mane, flipped in many different directions and she bounced, yes, bounced, through the rather tall grass. The current target of her young mind’s attention span was a bright green grasshopper. Right as she would get close enough to touch it with her muzzle it’d jump to a nearby rock, away from the huffs coming from her body. It was rather amusing to anyone who might be watching, but not to Lyra. She just wanted to play! The grasshopper could understand that right?

Another pounce from her equaled another jump from the grasshopper to get away. A stubborn frown with puffed up cheeks adorned Lyra’s face. This was starting to become much more less fun than she originally thought. For a change of pace, Lyra bent her front feet down, hindquarters upwards towards the sky and wiggling, almost in a pouncing fashion.

‘Let’s see that grasshopper get away from this atomic pounce.’ She thought with a grin.

The slight wind stilled, the grasshopper twitched for a moment, and Lyra stilled her body. Quite suddenly, the filly pounced, effectively not getting her target, but effectively hopping over the rock in which the grasshopper was on and accidently hitting someone else on the back legs. Lyra’s hooves gave out on her because of the impact, and landed rather unceremoniously in a heap on the ground. As she tried to come to, she swore she saw stars; Lyra realized that she wasn’t alone. Smiling sheepishly she looked up to apologize, only to come to see a beautiful mare in front of her.

The only words she could think of instead in her stunned state, “you’re pretty.”

Bella had managed to convince Azumoth to take her down to the hills. The stallion hadn't been particularly happy about leaving his position in the Grove, but it was something she had desired and, eventually, he had given in to her pleas. She knew he wouldn't be particularly comfortable out in the open, so she often left him to his own devices in the woods and nearby foothills, while she herself merrily made her way through the softer grasslands of the Kawani.

With spring in full bloom, and the warmth of the sunshine to warm the day, and beautiful flowers to perfume the air, it was everything the cream mare remembered. While she loved her home nestled protectively within the mountains and hills, it was in the plains where she had been born. Certainly, Bella had once felt betrayed by the landscape, the kalona attack still rooted firmly in her mind (and the scars still reminiscent on her body) . . .

But with time she had found forgiveness, and every now and then yearned to be within its warmth. The mare was nearing the end of her visit to her old homelands, nibbling on the sweet grasses here and there, and doing her best to not stare at the little brown filly. It wasn't hard to spot the young thing, especially as she seemed to hop and pounce freely, chasing some sort of insect. Bella had been surprised to find the young one, and though she naturally kept an eye in the girl, she also looked about for some sign of family. It was quite possibly the girl had run off, but . . . surely her family would seek her out soon!

It was only when the little brown thing pounced nearby, over shot, and tumbled right in to her that Bella turned to watch her freely. The little filly was even more adorable up close! She was a gentle shade of brown, with softer spots and hues decorating her muzzle, legs, and cheeks. Bella herself had to stifle a coo.

At Lyra's sudden compliment, the cream coated mare smiled warmly. "Well thank you. You're very pretty too, little one." Giving a low dip of her head, amber eyes bright, she added, "Were you able to catch the little bug you were chasing?" Even though she knew she had not, she knew foals well enough to know they frequently enjoyed having 'adults' be interested in their sorts of games. It was something Bella was only too happy to oblige.

Lyra's ears flicked forward in rapt attention. Even the pretty mare's voice was pretty. That's not something you got to witness every day! A huge grin made its way to her face and she still, rather ungracefully, clamored to her hooves to stand before the adult. And bounced in place with energy. She called her pretty too! Maybe she could make a new friend! Friend's were awesome! Especially since she didn't have many friends. Well, she had no friends at all and that fact made her quite sad.

She didn't think she had a terrible personality. Well, except that one time where she pulled her sister's tail when she started to fall into the lake nearby their human's home. Suffice to say nobody was happy with the ruckus of their fight after that. Or that other time where she accidentally knocked over their human's home when a fly kept trying to land on her forehead. Or that other time where she dragged her sister behind a waterfall and said sister got scared and called for dad. Apparently dad didn't like that.

But now, dad and sister were gone and Lyra was on her own now with no home. Well, she did have a nearby tiny cave that was just big enough for her that she shared with a rabbit family. They were nice to share that's for sure. And she had Zival, her adorable lizard familiar. He always had a way to bring her back food and other treats. He was her only real friend that she could come up with.

But with that thought, and the mare's question on if she captured that grasshopper Lyra whirled around to try and find the thing. But alas to her dismay, the grasshopper wasn't in sight anymore. Lyra puffed her cheeks in annoyance, no grasshopper should have been allowed to outsmart her! Be it her stubborn nature or not, Lyra didn't like to lose.

"No," she pouted hung her head.

Bella couldn't help but grin softly down at the little filly. She was very young, and very endearing. It did concern her that she didn't appear to have family in the nearby vicinity, but, the amber eyed mare also didn't wish to jump to conclusions. It was possible this young one had wandered off by her own, and was worrying her family something fierce! So she'd wait, spend some time with the young one, and see if she couldn't solve this mystery.

As the little filly was reminded about the bug she had so anxiously chased, Bella gave the softest of chuckles. "Well, bugs are rather crafty creatures sometimes, but also terribly delicate. It's probably a good thing he hopped away, for I'm sure he was quite tired by the chase. Have you ever played with butterflies, or had one land upon your nose or back?" Bella decided to distract the young one, to see if she couldn't change the subject. Instead of grasshoppers, which were currently discouraging the little one, to have her think about something else would be much more appealing. "Butterflies are my favorite, you know. I love to watch them fly in the breeze." The cream coated mare gave a little smile, glancing away from the filly to look around their vicinity. While a few spring flowers had bloomed, there were no butterflies to be seen. . .. At least not yet.

Perhaps, if this little filly was in to bugs, she'd have time to take her exploring. They might not find another grasshopper, but there might very well be various ants or possibly a lady bug or two hidden among the weeds. While the plains were mostly flat and lacked many trees and hills like her home in the mountains, they certainly didn't lack life.

Realizing the little one was still without a name, the female blinked owlishly for a moment before giving a chuckle. "Tell me, little one, do you have a name?" Eyes sparkling with good humor, Bella dipped her head low in a gracious bow. While she doubted the filly would care ifs he did or didn't, it was never too early to try to imprint manners. "You may call me Bella." There. Now they were properly introduced.

Lyra tilted her head in curiosity and in attention as she listened to the mare called Bella speak about bugs. Her tail wiggled even faster than could ever be thought possible in excitement. Bella liked bugs! And butterflies no less! She loved butterflies too! With all their pretty colors of blue and orange and green and black, so many colors and so many fluttering wings to keep her occupied. Bella was awesome in Lyra’s eyes. Her sister hated bugs, hated to get dirty, was always the good girl. Lyra, however, was more tomboyish and wasn’t afraid to get into a little mischief hear and there.

Uh oh, she didn’t give Bella her name at first! How rude of her. Lyra inwardly berated herself at forgetting.

“I’m Lyra,” she stood proudly, grinned, and spoke, “I’ve had many butterflies come near me, but none were comfortable enough to come close enough to land on me.”

The latter portion made her sad. Butterflies were so much fun to watch. In fact, they were the only bug she DIDN’T chase when she saw them. That was reserved for grasshoppers. Zival liked to tell her that her chasing habit was why he could never find food quickly but she disagreed with him. It wasn’t her fault that he couldn’t keep up with the bugs like she could! Granted, this disagreement caused many bickerings between the two, but she loved Zival so much. He came to her when she needed someone the most and she knew he’d never leave her. Speaking of which, where was he…?

“I’d introduce you to my lizard friend Zival, but he’s…”she paused for a moment to look around and shrug, “somewhere. Probably off sunbathing again or trying to find me. I told him to hop on my back but he wouldn’t listen. I swear he’s an old man in a young body.”

She giggled at the thought.

Bella listened to the young filly as she spoke of her love of butterflies. She was glad she finally was able to elicit the name out of the young one -- Lyra. "That's a very pretty name, Lyra." She cooed a bit, her amber eyes full of warmth and gentleness.

"I'm sure that someday a butterfly might befriend you enough to rest upon you. They are very shy though, but that doesn't mean you can't someday try. Right?" She tried to cheer up the young colt, giving her tail a little swish. All the same, the cream mare kept her ears alert for any sound of movement. . . .

Surely, surely this little one wasn't out in the plaisn all alone! She desperately hoped the young filly might have a parent, a guariand, a herd mate; someone who would swoop in and reclaim their little brown coated dear. She was far too precious to be out alone. . . .and Bella needed to find a way to ask. She was old enough to have some idea of family or friends.

But how to bring it up?

Ahh . . . . . a lizard friend. Well, that might be a way for her to segue the conversation in to one where she found out some information. "I didn't realize you had a lizard friend! How long have you been friends with him?" She asked, genuinely curious. She had no familiars herself, no other animals . . . but some of her sons did. And her mate. "My mate, Azumoth, has a bear named Giruven that roams around our territory. But I don't think we have many lizards where I come from." She added, giving a small chuckle. "Maybe I might yet get to meet this Zival of yours someday."

Lyra looked at Bella with a curious look on her face, tail wiggling almost one hundred miles a minute. Okay, maybe that was an exaggeration but Lyra didn’t really mind. Bella was pretty, very pretty, and Lyra found herself wanting to grow up to be that pretty too. But alas! Bella thought that her name was pretty! That was a start! Lyra smiled happily and bounced in place a few steps at the thought.

“Daddy named me that and Momma named my sister,” she replied all proud like, “although he’s not around anymore. Neither are momma and my sister.”

Her face fell a bit thinking about it before she quickly shook those thoughts away. Negative thoughts were not on today’s list of things to feel or do. That just wasn’t fun. And besides, positivity brought up so many more fun things to do! And Lyra loved to have fun!

“But that’s okay, I have my partner Zival. He takes really good care of me along with the rabbits we live with,” she smiled again and stayed positive even though, yes, sometimes things got really rough, especially when it rained.

“Usually when evening comes Zival will go off and make sure I have some wildflowers to eat along with the grass nearby our shared home. This is what he’s doing now I think, so you’d get to meet him if he gets done soon. He’s a good friend for sure. I feel lucky to have found him.”

As Lyra spoke, and admitted that she was being taken care of by a lizard of all things, the cream coated mare knew without a doubt what she had to do. It broke her heart that the little filly had been . . .what? Abandoned? Had her family left her? Had they been separated? Had tragedy struck and they passed away?

It wasn't easy to say, and honestly the mare wasn't entirely sure if she should even ask or bring it up. She didn't want to upset the young filly, and certainly didn't want to take the foal if perhaps her family was searching for her. Thankfully though, Bella was a mare with connections; not just a strong family, but one that was part of a strong herd as well. It was very possibly they could send word, or at least send a few sets of eyes and ears out to to search for the fillies family, if they were indeed seeking her out.

But even so, that would take time. Bella had a soft spot for foals who were seemingly abandoned or without parental guidance. She herself had lived her life all alone, with no real guidance or upbringing. She knew the loneliness that could grab one so small, the fear and anxiety that could overwhelm a little one when there was no one to depend on, no one to fall back on to love. She had no one to look out for her as a filly, and the mare would be damned before she let another orphan out of her sight. She had a long history of adoption, Azumoth as well, and how could such a sweet one like Lyra be left alone?

". . . has it been a very long time since you last saw your family?" Amber eyes softened as she spoke, hating to bring up the question, but needing to know. The fact the poor thing was living with rabbits was simply not right. Foals needed families, and if she could provide, she would.

"It's good of Zival to take care of you. . . I didn't have parents when I was younger, so I know how hard it can be living all alone, especially when so young." The mare offered a sympathetic smile, her thick tail giving a small swish behind her as she considered her words. ". . . but do you think Zival would mind if maybe, the two of you came to stay where I come from? You could stay as long as you liked, and you would have ample grasses and roots to eat, as well as playmates and new friends." She wasn't going to push having a new family, as that would ultimately be the young fillies choice, but she would hope. . . in time. . . that maybe the little colt might come to look at her as a mother, especially if her parents weren't ever found.

Lyra tilted her head to the side in curiosity. Bella-pretty was asking her about her family, or lack thereof. The thing was, she hadn’t seen her family in quite some time. Not her mother, not her sister, and not her father. She didn’t want Bella to think she was abandoned by her family. But on all accounts she wasn’t sure what happened completely. Granted, she had gone off on her own one morning and gotten lost, only to finally make it back to where she thought her family was and find them gone. That was when she met Zival and he took her under his wing, figuratively speaking of course. He had helped her search for days to find any whereabouts and clues to where they may have gone only to come up empty handed. To say that it didn’t bother her would have been a huge lie. But she couldn’t afford to think like that.

Zival had decided that evening on the fourth day to stay with her and protect her. He led her to the rabbit den where he met the family that would become her makeshift home. Lyra would be forever grateful for that and she wanted to make them happy in return. So, when Bella then went on to ask her if she wanted to come with her, she felt conflicted in her young heart. The thought of being in a safe environment with many others to communicate with and play with seemed so inviting, but she didn’t want to leave those who had taken her in. Luckily for her she heard a familiar rustling in the grass off to her left, and a familiar yellow, green, and blue lizard came into view.

Lyra’s ears perked, “Zival!”

User Image Zival didn’t reply right away, didn’t even notice the mare talking to Lyra, and quickly slithered around Lyra’s tiny legs to climb up onto her back, “I’ve been looking everywhere for you! I thought you were hurt.”

“Sorry,” Lyra replied hanging her head a bit, “but I’ve made a new friend!” and she gestured wildly at Bella, “she’s offered to take you and I in.”

Zival’s black eyes turned to regard the mare in question, only to realize exactly who Bella was. He knew of those who had taken a special path in life and gained new form. He had only ever seen once in his life and even then that was from afar. But to see the elder now, in the flesh, and so close, it was rather a striking moment. Flicking his tongue out a few times Zival finally replied.

“I’m sorry for being rude. I’m Zival. I am sure this crazy little one has already chatted your ear off.”

Lyra puffed her cheeks, “I’m not THAT bad!” she looked up at Bella to finally answer the questions the older mare had asked before being interrupted by her friend, “I never really knew momma. All I know is that I look a lot like her. As for my sister and papa, they kinda just disappeared. Zival tried helping me find them before we had to give up the search. But that’s okay, he and the rabbits have taken good care of me.”

Zival looked over at Lyra, “that may be. However you do need a better place to live than just a rabbits den.”

“But I don’t want to hurt their feelings,” Lyra trailed off.

“You won’t. I know they’ll understand if you leave. A hole in the ground is no place for a young one such as yourself,” Zival countered and Lyra sighed.

“Okay, but will you go off and tell them thank you for me please?” she request and the lizard nodded his head.

“Of course, but not right now. I’m sure Bella would like to take you closer to her home.”

“But—“

“No buts, I’d rather not get lost trying to find my way back to you anyway. Finding your scent sometimes can get very difficult.”

“Fiiiiiine,” Lyra huffed before looking up at Bella and smiling, “okay, I’ll go with you.”

Bella watched and listened quietly as the little lizard crawled up the young filly. It was obvious that the little creature had taken the girl under his watchful care, and she hoped that he might understand her request. It wasn't that she wished to separate the pair, merely bring the foal to a place that might be more suitable. Besides, there were many dangers, and rabbits and lizards might not be able to defend her should a kalona or 'walker appear.

Thankfully, though, the little rainbow painted lizard didn't seem to object. He appeared to see the reasoning behind her desiring to take the the little filly in, and Bella couldn't help but feel grateful. She understood that she could never replace the girls family, but even if they could just be friends, so she could watch over the little female, that would be ever relieving.

The Hour Glass Summit, as well as her own land, would be more than welcoming.

Dipping her head in greeting, Bella gave a gentle nicker as she shook her head. "No apologies needed, Zival. It's been nothing but a pleasure speaking with Lyra, and I am most honored to meet such a faithful companion to her. You do yourself a service, certainly." She spoke, sincerity clear in her words. She may have been an elder, but she would have done and offered the same even if she hadn't been blessed on such a path.

"My herd is up in the mountains, high up on the peaks," she explained, gesturing over her shoulder at the hazy mountains that were settled upon the horizon. "But we're visiting my son and his family, before we return. It's not terribly far from here, and will be in the area for a few more days yet." In case the little filly decided she might not want to be part of their family, or if Zival objected -- considering Azumoth was a mutant -- the girl at least wouldn't get lost in the mountains. To ease her into the family would be best, really. Would give them time to get to know one another, would give Lyra time to adjust to this new, not-so-rabbit-like family unit.

Turning back the way she had come, the cream colored mare reached down to gently touch Lyra with her nose. "Come along then, Lyra. You'll be able to meet your new herdmates," and of course, her new family.
