"Sorry Spinel, you can't come with me. Pokemon just aren't allowed at school. Now let go!"

Lyle Cricket was getting ready for school, but his new pokemon wasn't too happy at the idea of being left behind and kept clinging to his backpack. The Sableye was currently clinging to the bag with all four paws and still managing to look at Lyle with pleading gem-eyes. Lyle didn't want to pull at Spinel too hard for fear of hurting the pokemon or ripping his backpack, so he was having a difficult time separating the two. He gave another tug at one paw before switching back to pleading.

"Come on Spinel, Mom won't let me keep you if you make trouble, and you coming to school with me would get us both in trouble. Just stay here for the day, OK? I'll be back right after school, I promise." His pokemon still didn't seem convinced. Lyle decided to try a different tactic. "Tell you what, how about while I'm at school, you look for stones you might like to eat? We can go dig them up when I get back. How's that sound?" His pokemon perked up a little at the suggestion, but it still took a good bit of coaxing to get the pokemon off. But finally Lyle had his backpack free, and was just in time to rush off to catch the bus.

So Spinel wandered outside and started looking. The area around Lyle's house didn't seem to have much of interest, so he ventured farther away. After a while, he found it! The perfect place to get tasty rocks! The Sableye gleefully gathered up as many as he could carry and hauled them back to Lyle's house to wait for the boy.

On the bus back home, Lyle noticed a lot of fuss in front of one of the stores downtown. He gave it little thought and went back to wondering if Spinel had found anything interesting. If not, they'd probably go dig up some more quartz. But when he got home, what he found gave him a pretty good idea of what the commotion was about; Spinel was sitting on his bed, proudly showing off a pile of fancy-looking cut gems that had definitely not been there that morning.

"Spinel!" he cried in dismay. "Did you steal those?" When his pokemon looked confused, he clarified, "Did you take those from inside a building?" Spinel, starting to look less pleased at himself, nodded. "You can't do that! It's against the law to take someone else's stuff!" He suddenly realized how loud he'd been and was glad that nobody else was home yet, since his mom and older siblings were at work, and his little sisters hadn't gotten home from school yet. He lowered his voice anyway as he said, "Remember what I said about not getting in trouble? There's gonna be a lot of trouble about this." His pokemon wilted and looked apologetic, clearly realizing that he'd made a mistake.

Lyle stared at the gems, wondering what to do. Letting Spinel eat them would get rid of the evidence, but it would be wrong. Besides, if anyone had seen him take them, there'd be trouble anyway if someone recognized him. "Maybe if we get them back quick and explain you didn't know, they won't be too angry." He looked at Spinel sharply as he thought of something. "You didn't eat any already, did you?" He sighed in relief when his pokemon shook his head. "Good. Let's get these back right away, then." He dumped his school stuff out of his backpack and loaded all the gems in it, then ran outside. "Spinel, show he where you got these," Lyle said, so his pokemon ran ahead and guided his trainer towards the burgled jewlery shop.

"I'm telling you, it was Team Rocket! They stole my gems!"

Ed resisted the urge to rub his forehead. The owner of the gem store had been ranting and raving about how Team Rocket had stolen her merchandise. Ed seriously doubted that, as only unset jewels had been stolen, while far more valuable finished pieces had been left behind. It was very unusual, and completely different from the usual patterns of any of the organized crime groups.

A rookie tapped Ed's shoulder. Leaning in close, the kid whispered "Sableye on the security cams. No trainer." Ed nodded. Well, the chances for recovery of the gems had just dropped sharply. The critter was probably hungry, and broke into the jewelry store much like a hungry Arcanine might a butcher shop. Ed suppressed another sigh. The owner was not going to like this.

Spinel lead Lyle through the city, down streets and around corners with the unerring certainty of someone who had traveled a route enough times to memorize it. How many times had Spinel gone into that place to nab gems? The thought almost made Lyle groan. It became clear that they were getting closer to the place when he could hear an increasingly loud babble of voices. As he turned the last corner, he saw a couple cop cars, a few cops and a small crowd of other people clustered in front of a building halfway down the block.

Lyle slowed down at the sight. Spinel didn't notice at first and kept walking at a trot, and got a couple yards away from his trainer before he noticed the distance and stopped to look back. He found the boy looking very worried at the sight of all those cops.

Sure, returning the gems as quickly as possible seemed like the best thing. If something got broken at home, Mom only got more mad the longer it took before someone confessed they did it, and it was even worse if nobody did and she found out who did it anyway. It would probably be the same with cops, right? But...he hadn't thought there would be any there, or at least so many. Maybe he should come back later when it was quieter? Or would the punishment be bad no matter what he did? Would they arrest him, or even take Spinel away from him?

Lyle had slowed to a crawl, and now he stopped indecisively, two doors down from the jewelry store. Spinel had fallen back to keep pace with him, and was looking up anxiously at Lyle, who was looking pretty anxious himself.

Ed delegated one of the other officers to continue talking to the irate shopkeeper. She was now convinced that they too were part of Team Rocket and had doctored the security cameras, apparently to trick her into thinking the gems had been eaten so they could keep them for themselves. Ed had used up his store of patience with the irrational woman. Stepping off to the side, he noticed a sparkle out of the corner of his eye. Glancing over, he saw a Sableye with a very unhappy boy trailing behind it.

Ed winced. Sableye were not starter pokemon for good reason. They were expensive to feed, and given their strength, hard to keep away from things they consider food. He walked over, trying not to look threatening. "Hey there. That's a very nice pokemon. Is it yours?"

Oh no, now a policeman was heading over to him! And asking him about Spinel! Lyle looked up at the officer, eyes wide with apprehension. Was it his imagination, or did the man loom?

"Yes..." he said uneasily, before blurting, "I'm sorry! I just got him and I haven't had time to train him yet and he was hungry and I said he should look for rocks we can dig up while I was at school, cuz I've been feeding him quartz, but he must not have understood that I mean ones out in the ground because when I got home all these were on my bed," - at this point he slung his backpack off his shoulder and held it up to the officer, apparently without pausing for even a breath - "and he said he hadn't eaten any so I brought them all back, and I'll train him more and make sure he knows what's wrong so he never does anything like this again, and I'm really sorry so please don't arrest me or take him away 'cuz I've wanted a pokemon for so long and I only just got him!" The flood of words stopped as suddenly as it had started, leaving the boy gasping for air as if he'd just run a race.

Spinel had inched closer and closer to Lyle, and by the time his trainer had stopped speaking he was huddled behind the boy's legs, peeking around then like a shy toddler. He looked up at the man too, the fins on his head folded back a bit like an anxious dog's ears.

Ed knelt down. "Hey, it's all right, accidents happen. We're just going to take these back, and make sure they are all there. You did good, bringing them back. We aren't going to arrest you, or take your pokemon away" he reassured the frightened kid. "We might want you to take a class or two, but that's all the trouble you're in."

Ed glanced at the Sableye. "He probably went after the gems because he needs some micro-nutrients he isn't getting from quartz. I'm going to take you to the pokemon center after we get everything fixed here, and we'll get you some gem powder pills from Nurse Joy. Did you know, when they cut gems, it makes gem dust? Gem cutters collect it and sell it as vitamins for rock eaters like your Sableye here." Ed hoped that talking to the kid would calm him down before he hyperventilated or just passed out from sheer fright.

Lyle was almost dizzy from nervousness and he wasn't sure he caught everything the cop said, but he gathered that they weren't gonna take Spinel away, so he relaxed just a little bit. "That's good," he said with a sign of relief. Then something else the cop had said caught his attention. "Vitamins? For Spinel?" He looked down at his pokemon, who was looking up at him with fins perked hopefully, now that his trainer was less tense. Then Lyle frowned a little. "I hope they don't cost too much, 'cuz I haven't got much."

Ed smiled reassuringly. "That's okay, most new trainers don't have much money. That's why pokemon centers offer free services. You can get a week's supply at a time for free, just by going down to the pokemon center with your Sableye and telling Nurse Joy what you need. She'll give him a quick check-up to make sure he is healthy, and then she'll give you what you need to help him stay healthy. You can have a muffin or something from the free snack bar while you wait, and Spinel, was it? Spinel gets a treat when he is done. Did you know, if you travel to other places, you can even stay at pokemon centers for free? Pokemon centers are really nice like that," Ed told the boy.

With the number of children who went on pokemon journeys, a support system had to be in place for them, and pokemon centers had taken on that role. Food, shelter, and medial care was all available at centers, paid for by taxes and support from the pokemon leagues. Hopefully if he could convince the kid to use the services offered, he wouldn't end up resorting to theft to keep his pokemon fed. Ed was a firm believer in offering services to prevent the development of crime.

Lyle's eyes widened a little bit at hearing all the stuff Pokemon Centers offered. "Really? I know they let people stay at Pokemon Centers and healed pokemon, but not all that." He kind of wanted to head over there right now, partly to get away from the store. But he probably wasn't done until the cop said he was, and besides, he needed his backpack back. But one way or another, Lyle was feeling a lot better. He wasn't in much trouble, he'd get to keep Spinel, and he could get free food for his pokemon.

Lyle leaned down to pick up the Sableye to show him to the cop. "Yeah, this is Spinel. I found him when I was out digging for shiny rocks, and he followed me home so Mom said I could keep him." He straightened up with Spinel in his arms, but the pokemon decided to wriggle free and climb up on his trainer's head instead, where he perched on the boy's baseball cap.

"Well he certainly seems friendly. Come on," Ed said, standing up. "Let's go give these back. Oh, and don't mind the shop owner." Ed made a comically overdone sour face. "She's a silly old lady who thinks we're all part of a Team Rocket conspiracy."

Ed winked and lowered his voice conspiratorially. "I think this is the most excitement she's had in years, and she wants to imagine she's one of the main characters on a TV show where the bad guys are everywhere!" Ed looked from one side to the other, wide eyed, like he expected Team Rocket members to leap out from behind lightpoles.

Lyle giggled at the thought of being in a bad guy-filled TV show (and also because Spinel's feet on his head felt funny). "And I'm secretly an elite Team Rocket spy. I'm only bringing those back so I can get in and steal more!" he said, elaborating on the scenario. He tried to make a sneaky expression, but it was entirely ruined by the grin he couldn't get off his face. Spinel caught his trainer's mood and grinned too, thought his pointy teeth made the expression look somewhat less mirthful.

"Careful she doesn't hear you!" Ed said, again exaggerating his expression of fear to the point of being comic. "Just let me handle it, and we'll head to the pokemon center after this."

Lyle pressed his lips together in an attempt to hide his grin, then drew his hand across his mouth in is zipping motion to indicate he'd stay quiet. And for good measure he pressed Spinel's mouth closed and zipped it shut too.

Spinel had no idea what that was all about, but he kept his mouth closed for now, since that's what his trainer seemed to want.

Now if they were really going to talk to the person Spinel had stolen from, Lyle figured he should look more sorry. Thinking back on how scared he'd been just a few minutes ago dimmed the grin down until he could look suitably apologetic.

Ed approached the shopkeeper, and after a few minutes of baseless accusations, was able to check the gems in the backpack against the list of the stolen gems. They were all there. A few more minutes and Ed promising in a suitably foreboding manner to "deal with the boy appropriately" got them away from the woman without charges being pressed. Ed led the boy over to the squad cars, then leaned close, his back to the shopkeeper. "Ever ridden in a real police car?" he asked conspiratorially with a grin and a wink.

Lyle had been genuinely intimidated by the shopkeeper's yelling and didn't have to feign looking worried. He knew the cop wouldn't let anything happen to him (at least he thought not), but he didn't like people yelling at him. But once they were away the cop made him feel better almost right away.

"Nope," he answered, shaking his head. He peeked inside the car through the window. The back seat looked like a plastic bench, and didn't look very comfortable.
