It was almost time.
Ren lay in his darkened room, absently curling a strand of his hair around one finger. The weeks had seemed to pass by so slowly, and even now he felt as though time was merely crawling along at a snail's pace.
Ever since LW and Jove had left for the Isles it had been like this. And Ren had felt so unbearably lonely that he had done something a tad radical and cut off most of his hair.
Clearly being alone and near a pair of scissors was not a good combination when it came to Ren. Secretly he was looking forward to LW and Jove's reactions to this new change - and the fact that while they were gone he had acquired a bit of scruff on his face, which he had decided looked pretty decent and kept it.
He missed them quite terribly.
Rolling over on the bed, Ren moved to lay on his back now, his wings folding neatly beneath him. Around him, his many pets - not to mention half of Jove's and some of LW's as well - all clambered onto the bed, eager for affection, which Ren had given them all in spades these past few weeks.
Tiredly, he let his eyes flutter shut, exhaling slowly, one arm across his face. The anxiety was still there, as much as he tried to push it away, and Ren felt the tension stiffen his shoulders.
Please come home safely.

She felt disoriented.
Her eyes traveled slowly along the familiar structure that was Amityville. Home. She was home. Right? This wasn't another one of those...strange trances or anything.
...right?
LW shivered, rubbing at her arms and inhaling deeply. Everything smelled right. Smelled like home. Familiar territory. Home.
But there was something distinctly missing. Something that had been missing the whole time she'd been on that exchange trip. Or whatever it had been called. The she-wolf currently didn't care. Her mind was only focusing on one thing. One image. One boil.
For weeks she'd been stuck with the Four Clans and fellow students that had signed up for the 'trip'. It had been tolerable having at least students she knew there. And the dull ache she'd begun to feel eased a little when she'd discovered Tybalt had been there with her.
But Jack damnit, it was not the same as having him there!
LW felt her chest ache again, her feet carrying her tired body towards the Monster dorms. Many things had happened while she'd been...away. Some of which she refused to think too hard on. While others...were a little harder to ignore. Her violet eyes flickered down to look at her hands. And feet. She wondered what Ren would think. And then thinking of him made her pace quicken. She didn't even bother stopping at her own dorm, going up an extra flight of stairs to the floor above her own. She approached a door that was just like any other door. But this was his room.
Ren.
Hand shaking slightly, LW reached out and quietly opened the door, slipping in when it was cracked enough for her small body to squeeze in. For a moment, LW just stood there, closing her eyes and letting the scents of Ren's room fill her mind. Home. I'm home!
Opening her eyes, she searched for the one she desperately wanted to see. He was there, laying on his bed. Her heart tripped over itself as her breath caught. Oh Jack she hadn't seen him for far too long!
The only warning the gryphon would have gotten that an ambush was about to occur was from one overly excited hazmutt. Who spotted his lady master and was all but dancing on the bed, tail wagging like a propeller. Then LW pounced, arms sliding around Ren's neck as she whispered in his ear at the same time.
"I'm home, kitten."

Ren had spent the past several hours doing absolutely nothing productive whatsoever.
He supposed he could have been doing something else instead - like reading (where were his books, anyway?), or gardening (he hadn't done that in a while, it was probably completely and utterly dead by now), playing Scario Kart (but the scarestation was somewhere beneath his bed and he didn't feel like rummaging around for it).
But instead he was doing nothing. And now he was starting to fall asleep, even though he had already taken a very small nap earlier that day. It was difficult to sleep deeply, though - his thoughts kept running back and forth, colliding with one another until he wasn't sure what exactly he was thinking about anymore.
He missed LW. And Jove. And even that obnoxious black dog, since at least Tybalt kept him occupied with his ridiculous antics most of the time.
It was too quiet without them. A small breath escaped Ren's throat as he sighed, not noticing the figure in the open doorway (he still had the habit of never closing his door) until he heard a frenzy of barking, not from his own pets, but from one of LW's that he was watching over.
"Austin, what," Ren started to say irritatedly, pushing himself half up and lowering his arm. "are you do - "
That was as far as he got before there was a flash of red hair and all of a sudden arms were around his neck and Austin was barking like crazy and there was the scent of vanilla in the air - and an all-too-familiar voice -
His heart skipped a beat.
"LW!"
Instantly his arms were around her waist, hugging her so tightly she probably wasn't going to be able to breathe properly. Ren buried his face in her scarlet locks, his ears flattening back against his newly short hair, a wide grin on his face.
"You're home," he said, immensely relieved, and pulled back, cradling her face in his hands. She was here, she was alive, she was all right - at least physically -
Leaning forward, he swept her back up into his arms and kissed her eagerly, smiling against her lips. When he pulled back, her face was in his hands again, his thumbs brushing over her cheeks, his eyes searching hers.
"How are you?" he asked worriedly. "Everything all right? How was it? Did anything...happen?"

Austin clearly did not give a damn as he obviously ignored Ren's words, too busy trying to determine if he should jump off the bed or wait until his lady master came over to them. She was home! His lady master was home! YAY! The muffled barking was joined by excited whining as he pressed his head into her side.
LW herself felt like she was soaring. Maybe even a little light headed - though that might have been the difficulty breathing. But she didn't caaaare~ She was home! And in Ren's arms. Exactly where she belonged.
"Reeeen!"
She clutched him tightly, feeling something in her ease finally. Something she hadn't really been aware was drawn too tight and painful. Her face buried into the crook of his neck near his shoulder. The smell of pumpkin and spice surrounded her and her grip tightened. Oh Jack. She had missed him so very much. Even more than she had truly realized.
The smile on her face as he pulled back was that one that was only ever for him. Her fingers touched his and traced along a few of his many freckles.
And then she was being pulled into a kiss and LW felt like little sparks were igniting in her stomach. She may have gotten a little carried away with kissing him. But Jackdamnit, she was allowed to! And the grin on her face when he pulled back again was wolfish with no hint of shame. Her expression softened as his hands came up to cradle her face again. She nuzzled into his hands a soft sigh escaping.
"I'm fiiiine. I'm home. And I missed you so much." A hand moved (slyly) up to rub one of his ears. Because she could. Her violet eyes never left his and really, she couldn't stop smiling. She leaned in, letting her lips brush against his before shifting herself enough to sit in his lap. One of her favorite spots to sit.
"It was...interesting." She ventured carefully. "The classes themselves didn't seem too dissimilar to our own, but..." LW hesitated, trying to find a way to explain it. "At the same time they felt...deeper in meaning." An involuntary shiver shook her, hands clenching slightly. Medea's class still haunted her. Or to be more specific, what she had done in that class. Even if it hadn't actually been real. It was real enough in her mind.
And then there had been Hunters. Her tail swished irritatedly at that one. At least she had managed to be spared from that...somehow.
"There was also a few...battles. I am quite solid in my hate of Hunters. And-" LW blinked, the words dying in her mouth. Her gaze was on Ren's face. Something had been bugging her, seeming off. She hadn't pinpointed what it was until just then.
He...he cut his hair! And what's that?
A hand reached up curiously, finger brushing along the bit of fuzz on his chin that had definitely not been there before. Then she was reaching back to let her fingers slide through his short hair. For as long as she had known her boilfriend, his hair had been long. This? This was sexy. And why yes, there was a faint flush to her cheeks with that thought.
"You...your hair..." She murmured, still combing her fingers through it. Distracted? Her?! Totally.

Having LW in his arms again made Ren feel quite a bit less lonely than he had felt for the past three and a half weeks. Each day spent alone back at Amityville had been somewhat tortuous - though Ren could not honestly say that it had been the first time. He had grown up alone, after all - or, at the very least, he had grown up wanting to be alone, away from the scrutinizing glares and angry fists of his parents.
But there was a great deal of difference between choosing to be alone and being alone because you were left alone. However, Ren could not blame LW for taking the chance to go to the Horsemen Isles. It was a rare opportunity, after all, and Ren had debated on going.
Almost. At least until he had gotten the phone call from his parents. And afterwards he had decided against the exchange program, which had sucked watching LW and Jove go and he stay. But Ren tried to forget this fact, instead turning to give LW his full attention.
"I missed you too," he told her, his ear flicking against her hand, a purr thrumming through him. He gave her a Look, and reached up, moving her hand down, away from his ears - but then he held both of hers in his and squeezed her fingers reassuringly. "Lots. It wasn't the same without you here."
He leaned back with his back against the headboard, LW curled up in his lap, Ren's arms snugly around her waist. She fit so perfectly in his arms, and he let his head rest atop hers, smiling into her hair and all the while doing some sort of internal chant.
She's back, she's back, she's back...
Then she spoke and his internal chant abruptly died. Ren leaned away, turning LW around so that she was sitting sideways in his lap, and gave her a piercing stare.
"LW," he said warningly, and there was a sharp edge to his voice that had not been there a moment ago.
Hunters. The very idea made the rage boil in his stomach, Ren almost missing what LW was talking about. He glanced down at her, a heavy frown on his face, and reached up to move her hand away from his chin, linking his fingers through hers and resting them in LW's lap.
"I cut it," he said, completely disregarding this radical change. "Back to the hunters. LW."
He had to ask.
"Was...he there? The one who hurt you?"

Finally being home was doing wonders to her too tense muscles and restless mind. The wolf in her was at ease being back in familiar territory. But more importantly, she was back with her pack. With those she loved. The ones that brought her comfort and made her feel complete. At the Isles, she hadn't been able to feel that. And it left her in a constant state of unrest, no matter how hard she tried to relax.
The she-wold gave him an angelic smile when he grabbed her hand, pulling it down and keeping it within his own. But she'd felt and heard the purr and gotten it out of her system for now. Her fingers curled around his as he squeezed her hands, a loving look directed up at him. She leaned forward and kissed his cheek gently.
"It wasn't the same without you with me there, either." She murmured, snuggling into him. How many times during that three and a half weeks had she craved this? Almost every night, perhaps?
I missed this...missed Ren.
She was pretty sure that next time, she was not going anywhere unless her boilfriend was coming with her. Or she was allowed to glue herself to Tybalt's side. Though her best friend was not quite Ren. He brought a comfort that no one else could possibly provide. Because no one else was hers like he was.
LW cringed a little at the hint of sharpness in Ren's voice. She stared down at their now linked hands, avoiding eye contact for the moment. Though she wanted to keep talking about his new hair style. Unfortunately the gryphon was a stubborn one and she wasn't going to get away with that. His question made her wince, curling up unconsciously closer. Lifting her gaze she gave him all her attention, sighing.
"They came to the Isles. I don't know how or why. Just that they attacked. And destroyed the Isles themselves." She leaned into, taking comfort from being in his lap and having his scent surrounding her. "I'm sure...the staff will say something soon. But the Isles are no more."
She hesitated before adding softly, "And I don't know, but I'm assuming he was. I avoided most of them." LW's gaze flickered down to her stomach, where there was still a scar reminding her of one of her biggest and almost fatal mistakes. Her teeth clenched.
"But...I came back to you. In one piece." She lifted her gaze up to his. "Do I dare even ask what prompted you to cut your hair?" She missed the long locks, but was very much falling in love with the new style. Her face suddenly split into a huge grin. "I love it!" And...yep. Somehow, she'd gotten a hand back up to an ear. That was two times now that Ren would be allowed to get her back.

He was more happy than he could say to have LW back here in his arms, and Ren squeezed her tightly, never wanting to let go ever again. To be honest, it had completely and utterly sucked without her here - and Jove as well - and Ren had the distinct feeling he was not going to leave her alone for quite some time after this.
His hand held hers tightly, his brows drawn down and his lips pressed together in a thin line. Hearing that the hunters had been there made him more than a little irritated, more than a little angry, and he hated himself for not being able to be there to protect her.
How could I have let her go there on her own?
Though she'd had Tybalt, and Ren had to grudgingly admit that the black dog was, if anything, protective of LW and would have done his best to take care of her.
But it was still frustrating.
"Wait," he said, as Ren's mind screeched to a sudden halt. "Wait. The Isles are destroyed? The Hunters destroyed all of the four Isles?"
His thoughts did not seem to want to comprehend this, his head reeling. Ren stared down at LW with a mix of utter shock mixed with a fury that he tamped down, pressed back into his heart, forcing himself to relax. Some of the tension eased from his shoulders, but he pulled LW closer, his nose against her hair.
"If he was there, and I wasn't there to protect you..." he muttered darkly, and kissed the top of her head. LW's hand had already gone back up, tugging playfully at his ear, which flicked under her fingers, another purr thrumming through his body. But Ren wasn't finished yet, and he reached up, dragging her hand away again. He kissed her fingertips gently, then reached his hand out, touching the side of her face.
"You did come back to me," he said quietly, and stroked her cheek tenderly, brushing aside some of her hair. He leaned over and kissed her again, warm and passionate, and then pulled her to him in a hug, the side of her face against his.
"And I just thought it was time for a change."

Having that deep restlessness inside her the entirety of her time at the Isles finally ease and relax was enough to make her feel almost giddy. LW shifted only enough to practically melt in Ren's arms. It felt so good to have those arms around her again. It just made her feel...whole. Complete.
She didn't think Ren would mind if she stayed in his room the next few days. Or more.
Maybe she and Jove could camp out in her boilfriend's room? That sounded amusing. And really nice. She'd have to remember to ask the pup.
LW just blinked up Ren, the truth of her words in her eyes. She nodded slowly, leaning her head against him. "Yes. They are gone now. I..." The she-wolf frowned, staring down at her tail. "I don't really know how they did it. Or what exactly happened. Things were just...chaotic. But the Isles, all of them, are gone." She murmured, shivering and curling against him as he pulled her closer.
Her lips twitched up as his lips kissed her fingertips, but his words made a part of her cringe. She pressed her cheek against his hand, eyes flickering up towards his. "He'll pay..." She said softly, a deep anger glittering in her gaze. Not that she was going to purposely go looking for him. But if she ever did come across him again...
She closed her eyes briefly, a hand automatically going to her stomach. Her eyes fluttered open at his touch, a soft and loving smile curling her lips. Until they were preoccupied with returning his kiss. Something that sent little waves of heat through her and made LW once again so happy to be home. Her arms rose up to wrap around his neck as she nuzzled his cheek.
"And I don't plan on leaving anytime soon." LW muttered, tail flicking to curl around them both. "I don't like not having you by my side." She hugged him tighter before a small snort escaped followed by a giggle.
"That is quite the change, dear heart." LW moved her head enough to press her lips against his cheek as she spoke. "I'll miss those long golden locks...but this is kind of..." She paused, thinking on the word she'd heard before. "Sexy~"

Hearing that the Isles - the Horseman Isles, the proud, elaborate races of the Heirs - had been utterly destroyed in one fell swoop by the hunters gave Ren a reason to be angry with them, other than the reasons he'd held before.
They'd mass murdered an entire race, practically. It was mind-blowing and horrifying simultaneously, and Ren shuddered, his expression growing darker, holding LW tightly in his arms as though he were never going to let go. It was something difficult to comprehend, considering he hadn't been there to see it for himself, but hearing it from LW's lips made everything ten times worse.
If something had happened to her...
But something hadn't, and he needed to remember that she was all right, that she was fine, that she was here and that she wasn't hurt or broken.
At least not physically. Ren's eyes swept over his ghoulfriend, trying to make sure that she was all right, that she wasn't injured, and when he was satisfied that she was fine, he pressed a warm kiss to her cheek, lingering there to breathe in her scent.
"I've gotta say," he said with a sigh, and dropped his head to her shoulder. "It was really very lonely without you all here. I thought I was going to go stir crazy, so I sorta...er, went off on a random tangent and cut my hair."
Lifting a hand, Ren idly ran his fingers through the newly short strands, which reached just above his shoulders. It was certainly a drastic change - he hadn't ever expected to cut his hair, considering how proud he was of it, but at the time it had seemed like a good time to do it. He was a third year now, and he had been through much to get where he was.
Change was inevitable and sometimes disliked, but at least this small change he could control himself - along with the scruff on his chin.
Ren blinked owlishly down at LW, arching his brows.
"Oh, you think so, do you?" he asked, with a devilish smile, and then tackled LW down onto the floor, burying his face in her neck and blowing a raspberry against her skin. Laughing delightedly, he pecked a series of quick kisses over her throat, then her cheek and finally to her lips, his hands holding LW's waist down to keep her in place.
"So," he said, after a few moments, and lifted his hand, stroking his fingers tenderly down the side of her face, his expression shifting to a more serious one.
"What about my offer, then?" asked Ren, and leaned forward, nuzzling his nose against LW's cheek in a very catlike gesture before moving away, his ears flattening back against his hair.
"You know...the one about how we should get married in the future."

She couldn't help thinking back on what her time spent on the Isles had been like. All the way up until the hunters appeared and destroyed something precious to Halloween once again. Yet, she also wasn't able to keep herself from remembering Medae's class. The...what had she called it? Trance? Whatever the Jack it had been, what they had witnessed there...
LW curled closer to Ren, suddenly feeling cold. The hand that had been resting against her stomach curled into the fabric of his clothes and she had to force herself to refrain from looking at her hands. To reassure herself there was no blood stained on them.
Stupid Jacking tormenting classes!
Really, in that sense, the Four Clans were the same as Amityville when it came to their classes.
With her head resting against him as it was, and arms wrapped around his neck, LW found herself absently toying with his new short hair. The look she gave him when he spoke was full of amusement though. And then she hid her face against his neck, laughing.
"So...in other words, we shouldn't leave you alone like that? Or else you'll cut off all your hair next time." She tugged at the golden brown strands. "Then I'd be really sad." Leaning back just a little, she eyed the bit of fuzz on his chin now too, tapping a finger against it. "I definitely like it...." She added again.
And then she found herself on the floor - which she landed on with a squeak - and Ren being a brat. LW wiggled under him and tried to shove the gryphon away, but was laughing too much and trying to curl away so he couldn't get at her neck. It was sensitive there! And ticklish in certain spots. But her boilfriend had a good grip on her waist. LW was stuck just laughing, and smiling against the lips that finally met hers.
Of course she added in a small n** to his lower lip for pinning her against the floor. And it was too much to ask for her to keep from clinging to him.
Her tail lightly brushed against his legs, a small frown creasing her brows at the shift in his expression. She stared up at him, idly tracing her fingers along the base of his wings, near his shoulder blades.
"Yes...?" She asked hesitantly, growing more confused. Though his nuzzle chased away some of the concern she'd started to feel. Then he clarified what he was referring to and LW felt her chest tighten in a strange way, heart clattering against her chest. When he'd first said those words, she hadn't known if that was real or not. And still wasn't sure her mind hadn't made it up. But hearing them again, seeing his expression, LW found herself speechless yet again.
The she-wolf was pretty sure her cheeks were turning red, and that she probably should respond. LW just wasn't sure how to respond to that. Was there a right way? Definitely a wrong way.
Her hands moved slowly, reaching up to cradle his face. That smile that was for him alone formed and there was a bright shimmer to her eyes. "I...I would not wish for any other sort of future, kitten." She murmured with many emotions hidden under her words. Raising up enough, LW kissed him. Something sweet, tender and warm that was completely LW.
"When the time comes...there is only one right answer to that question." She whispered into his mouth, fingers brushing along his face. "And you already know that answer~" Yes. It would always be yes.

"I will not," said Ren, slightly indignantly, and shook his head, letting the knew short hair flip against his cheeks. It fell to just below his head, against the nape of his neck and slightly above his shoulders. The strands were less curly now that it was shorter, but it was still thick and wavy. A part of him missed the security that his long hair had provided, but mostly he felt good about this new change. Perhaps it was something small, and meaningless, but considering he was a third year now, he felt as though it was something that he could control., if nothing else.
Looking down at LW now, Ren felt more at home than he had ever felt before. He lifted a hand, pressing it against the side of her face and smoothing back some of her hair. His wings lifted, then laid back down, surrounding the both of them where they lay.
He could not even begin to describe how much he loved her. How much he needed here. There was no one else in the world that he wanted to be with more, and his entire heart was filled with her and her alone. How had he even gotten so lucky? His whole life he had never even begun to think that he would ever find someone. Used to being alone, now he could not imagine being without her - or Jove, for that matter. The two of them were his entire world.
Ren's hand smoothed over her face again as she kissed him, thumb brushing against her jawline as she pulled back. He smiled against her lips, and then rested his forehead against hers, wrapping his arms tightly around her waist.
"One day," he said quietly, and kissed her forehead, then each of her eyes, her nose before pulling back, smiling gently. "One day I'll ask, and I hope the answer will still be the same."
Then he kissed her again, pulling her close, and not intending to let go for a very long time.
