Ami wandered into the table room, looking for one thing that made everyone happier in a depression: food. Sure, all they had were MREs, but that was ******** good enough for her after learning that soon everyone was going to hate her.

Ami was going to grab an MRE, a chair, and sit down glumly, when she noticed the girl from the battlefield. In a rather depressed voice, she said, "God your shoes are STILL hideous, even out here." With that, she found a table, and sat down to eat.

Yes, even under insanity and weariness, she could still insult someone's shoe choice.

Vanessa had just entered the mess hall, her expression indifferent as it could be in this time of sorrow. Volt was still trying to comfort her in his own special way and was littering her mind with silly jokes.

It wasn't working for her.

Instead, she claimed some kind of food (well, she thought it was food, in any case), and looked around. Then, the girl, Ami, from the battlefield had come in. And promptly insulted her taste in shoes. Vanessa blinked, filtering this comment through her mind. She was about to return a biting comment, probably more fed by the Insanity than anything else, but Volt stopped her.

:: There's no need for contention Vanessa. Maybe you could try to lighten things up, eh? o uo :: As if to enphasize his pun even further, his little pendant form glowed a bit brighter. Lighten the situation, indeed.

Still, Vanessa could appreciate his advice, and when she spoke, it was in a more neutral tone. "It doesn't matter to me. They're practical and help me survive. Thus, I see no reason to diminish my ability to life by trying to impress someone with my clothing choices." For some unknown reason though, despite what the girl had just said to her, she pulled out a chair on the other side of table from Ami, and sat down.

For some reason, perhaps because they'd battled side-by-side, she felt some sort of potential kinship with this girl. Comrades in arms, more like, but the thought was still there.

"It's not a matter of impressing people," she critiqued, "It's a matter of having the decency to dress correctly." She rolled her eyes, standing up and summoning Junpei.

She rolled her hand and said, "Listen I'm going upstairs." She pointed upwards so Vanessa would understand she meant ALL the way upstairs to Deus Ex. "You can come if you want."

Hey, take it as a kindness. She didn't normally invite people to go places with her.

Vanessa gave a shrug, unable to comprehend why Ami cared so much about the Lifer's clothing choices. "Dressing correctly is a matter of opinion and preference, I've always found. No one has mentioned my clothing being ugly besides you, actually." There wasn't much weight in that comment though. She might've just scared away any comments anyone else would have, considering how blunt and critical her expressions usually were.

The red-head followed Ami's hand as it was pointed to the ceiling, understanding the gesture for what it was meant to say. She gave a nod, standing from the table. "Sure. I'd rather be doing something useful than just sitting around."

Plus, maybe some of those scrambled emotions could be vented somehow. It's pretty surprising how well Volt worked as a rage conductor in times like these.

"If they weren't saying it, they were thinking it," Ami returned bluntly.

They arrived up at the dorms, a large expanse that covered a big chunk of Deus Ex Academy. It was still FAR from cleared. As she walked, she remained somewhat silent until a hunter body came into view.

It was ... unsettling to say the least, but what was done was done. She couldn't do anything except ignore the feelings attached to death and pretend like it didn't bother her. "Let's at least save the tablet," she said coldly, reaching out for the glowing stone.

Shadows and fog erupted from the tablet, which turned and twisted until it formed a giant sort of bear-dragon mixture. At least, that was the best way Ami could describe it, because it really had no tangible form. It was constantly switching, back and forth back and forth.

"s**t!" she called out, "GET DOWN."

"Perhaps, but that's none of my concern." Vanessa didn't care what others thought of her, not enough to change how she dressed or acted anyway. Survival outweighed others' opinions any day.

The dorms seemed to be their target. Vanessa summoned Volt as they moved up the stairs, letting Ami take the lead. The fog swathed the area, resulting in a hushed, morbid feel. That was even before she spotted the body. She said nothing, silent in respect for the fallen warrior, and gave Ami a nod when the other girl went after the weapon tablet. It was the least they could save.

Alas, they couldn't even save that.

Vanessa immediately slipped into a battle-ready stance when the fog exploded from around the tablet. There was a creature there, some strange mix of a bear-dragon-thing, slipping in and out of tangibility. Ami's words reached her almost simultaneously to when she started a duck. The edge of one of it's claws still caught her though, and she grimaced at the giant thing, pulling Volt's huge bulk onto her shoulder.

She shot, but the lightning barely grazed the thing.

The monster's fog tendrils were sliding over the battlefield, wreaking havoc along the way. Ami tried to get an attack in, but they were too strong, covered too large a field.

So for now she just stayed ducked behind a piece of cement, trying to protect herself from the fog monster.

It seemed that not even Ami's glaive could pierce through it. Vanessa could barely see the other girl through the fog now, the writhing, shifting fog-lines spreading out even farther. Vanessa dove to one side in an effort to dodge some of the lashing, tangible limbs, but still felt it score a chunk across her side.

She rolled with the hit, shifting into a crouched stance with Volt on her shoulder again. After a moment to line up the cannon, she pulled the trigger. Lightning crackled from the barrel, this time actually hitting and fraying across the wispy form before it could fully dissipate into the fog. Volt gave an excited cheer in her mind, and Vanessa did nothing to shush him. Perhaps his enthusiasm was paying off for once.

Ami couldn't get a single hit in anywhere, because she was too busy dodging pulsating tendrils of insanity. A few grazed her arms leaving grey patches that quickly faded, but Ami fear that soon one of them would stay permanently.

Finally she found a hiding spot at least for a few moments and pulled out her phone, sending a short text with what little time she had. She just spammed whoever was on her contact list with trembling hands.

"Giant shadow. Dorms. Help."

The message was short, but it held enough information for Wilson to understand the situation. Gramps, get ready! His partner chuckled softly as the trainee slipped out of the bunk bed and rushed out of the underground base. Wilson tugged the goggles off of his neck and nearly fell over from the sudden weight that appeared in his arms. Gramps, can’t you lose some weight? [Very funny.] Slipping on the gasmask was easy and so was the heavy pack. The wires clattered noisily as he rushed for the dormitory building.

Fog. Fog. Fog. Everything was covered in fog and he had a troublesome time navigating through the hallways, but after a while he managed to follow the sound of clashing weapons. Unsurprisingly he found Ami, but then there was also Vanessa. Oh! He hadn’t realized they were friends. Wilson decided to come at the thing from behind and doused it in a blanket of green gas. “Watch out!” A little too late for that, don’t you think?

He rushed over to the other two girls. “Hey! Let’s beat this thing, okay?” Don’t worry guys, Wilson’s got this. OvO

If Ami was messaging him, things were bad. But what if she was just pulling his chain? She didn't like him, so she could just be trying to make him look like an idiot. But if she really needed him, she'd hate him forever for not coming to her aid. He had to go just to make sure everyone was okay. Right? He stumbled out of his bunk and summoned Shang all in the same scrambling, messy instant and ran off, certain that he saw Wilson just ahead of him. He quickly lost the hunter, however, as the fog began to cloud his vision and make navigating harder.

<Other senses, kid.>

Right. Other senses. He paused and tried to open himself up to his hearing. There wasn't much, until-

That was definitely Wilson's voice. He took off again, following the familiar voice and sound of weapons, and came skidding to a halt as a large shadow filled his vision. There was still a ton of fog, and a lot of bodies to move around, so when Feng tried to swing his weapon, he ended up slamming his shoulder into a door frame instead. Augh. Was there ever a moment he didn't look like an idiot in front of Ami?

"I'm here!" He shouted as an afterthought.

Ignore the call of another hunter? Never. Grabbing his coat, Marcus was off and running to find the other hunters. If it was giant, it was either the bird, or the incorpreal. Hopefully, not mommy monster. Reaching the dorms, Dis pulsed, trying to feel them out with no luck. The sound of a fight however, sent him running.
Ami and Wilson he knew, others not so much.

"Ami, take guard position, and don't you dare say you can't do it! Wilson, I'll cover you!" He was already moving, shoving Dis into the cloud of grey, sending it back. "We need to get it into the commons, the halls are too narrow for us to work this close unless we form a line. Wilson, you think we can push it back far enough or should we use the rooms to flank it?"

Vanessa hadn't noticed Ami send out the text. She'd been a little too focused on trying to dodge the wispy-death-tentacles, actually. As such, she was rather surprised when there was suddenly Wilson, along with two others, appearing from the fog. She gave them a brief nod, forcing her surprise out and focusing again on their enemy. Maybe with everyone here, they could actually do some more damage than just the lightning strikes Volt had been landing.

And Wilson lived up to his new ranking, it seemed. He'd become much stronger since they'd last sparred, and Vanessa was glad for that. With re-enforcements here to help, they had a chance of actually beating this thing.

She pulled Volt onto her shoulder, focusing on the beastie as she lined up her shot. Within her mind, Volt had become a relatively excited ball of static, eager to hit the creature again. After a moment to target, she pulled back the Tesla Cannon's trigger. Right before the lightning could connect however, the monster faded, leaving the electricity to spark out in the sky.

It was a good thing Ami had called for back-up when she had.

Ami could've kissed Marcus, Feng and Wilson as they came around the corner. The backup at least assured that they'd make it back to the base to retreat, if necessary. At the same time, there was always the sinking suspicion that they might lose someone.

The voices kicked up another wave of paranoia, and she almost ran towards cover, only to remember that Marcus had told her to defend the others. She would never disobey order. Never.

Considering Marcus was already covering Wilson, she only had two choices. Either Feng or Vanessa. She looked at the two candidates and immediately ran towards Feng, standing in front of him and blocking some of the tendrils of darkness that snuck towards him.

Her reasoning? Ami thought Vanessa could take care of herself, while Feng was a walking hazard.

Right. He was being defended by Ami. Why did it have to be Ami? Couldn't he and Wilson buddy up or something? He frowned at the back of her head, utterly at a loss for how to feel. She was wishy-washy. Confusing. As certain as he was that she hated his core existence, he was also certain she would help him out if he really needed it. Which all rounded into one big ball of dafuq.

<Stop staring at her and attack.>

Yeah. He could do that. That was probably what he was supposed to be doing anyways. If Ami caught him staring, well, things could get hairy. He swung Shang above his head and let the bulky head of his meteor hammer sail toward the creature. And much to his surprise, he actually landed a hit. So it COULD be hit! That made it a little easier.
