This is relatively trivial, but still irritating.
We live in a part of town heavily populated by university students, largely due to the fact that my partner teaches at one of the nearby universities, and my the space I rent for my teaching studio is on the campus of another school, also relatively nearby. So hurray for us, we can both walk to work.
But our neighbours are just really terrible. Especially the people who live in the flat directly above ours. From the sound of it, they like to frequently tapdance and move furniture around 2am. They also throw loud parties, and one of their dumb drunk friends recently broke one of our windows.
Anyway, I get home today, tired and with a headache, and now they're...I think they're crushing beer cans on their kitchen floor and then kicking them around. This is all right above my head, mind you.
I've tried everything I can think of. I've politely asked them to shut up, I've less politely asked them to shut up, I've called the police on them (never something I ever thought I'd do), I've complained to the landlord more than once, I've even tried to out-noise them in the least appealing ways I can think of, all to no lasting avail.
Please pray that I don't snap one day and kill them all.
Please pray for me to find reserves of patience I never knew I had.
Also, anyone just have some good old-fashioned advice on how to deal with these people?

usually people leave me alone when i wave a gun in their face... XDDDDD or take a sledgehammer to their door followed by a "if you dont shut up, this is going to be your face" of course, thats usually in my imagination. However in all seriousness, landlords will typically evict someone if they keep causing problems for other tenants.

Of course they practiced really late when I had to get up for work at 3 AM. Even the night guy at the local gas station thought it was terrible, and he should know. Eventually I got a friend to go with me. I did my best big boy knock on the door. When they answered, I explained to them that I had to get up at 3 AM every single work day, and then we shared awkward glances at their weed and beer. (I hate college towns.) They were cool about it for a month or so. Then I got moved.

However in all seriousness, landlords will typically evict someone if they keep causing problems for other tenants. Our landlord is pretty much the worst. When we first moved in here, the whole building was managed by a property company that, y'know, exists to manage rental properties. And they were great. They'd fix things quickly, they had clear rules that they would enforce with a "three strike" sort of rule, it was great. I think all or at least most of the same people were living here then, and it was a pretty nice building. A little noisey on the weekends, but really not bad at all. Then, as of the first of this year, the property OWNER started managing everything. Or should I say NOT managing everything. Now nothing gets fixed unless we do it ourselves, and our neighbours have become more and more obnoxious, obviously because now they can get away with it. The obvious answer is to just move, but you can never really "just move." It's so much easier said than done, and we've moved so many times in the past couple years that I think my head would explode if I had to do it again any time soon. Plus, this place isn't all bad. It's cheap, the flat itself is quite nice, and everything we need is close by. I don't know if you've ever lived in a big city, but if you have, you know how much living in a convenient location can be worth.

The first few times we talked to them, they were nice about it and did quiet down mostly, at least for the rest of the night. Now they just regard us with distain and annoyance, as if we're someone else's parents constantly showing up to ruin their fun. The problem is that they're naive, arrogant, spoiled children who like playing grown-up on Mummy and Daddy's tab. I've dealt with all kinds of people, with all kinds of screwed up on all kinds of things, and I know from experience that Drunken Self-Entitled University Student is one of the worst. They're right up there with Violent Acid Trippers Who Won't Keep Their Clothes On.

Ransom3d Also, anyone just have some good old-fashioned advice on how to deal with these people?Witness to them. You know, I automatically dismissed this as being naive and ovely idealistic. But I'm an adventurous man. I'll try anything once. So after ai got off the computer...erm...mobile telephone, I dressed in a black suit. White startched shirt. Black tie. Black shoes. Black cufflinks. All v. conservative. I even spent a few moment trying to tame myncrazy hair. And then, armed with with one of my nicer prints of my English Standard Version of the Bible, as well as a cheap copy of the NT that someone on the street gave me years ago. We have loads of Bibles, so I figured I'd offer the little gross oramge-coloured NT to them on the offchance they wanted it. Dressedd and armed as such, I knocked on their door and when one of the tenents opened, I gave him the cheesiest smile I could muster and asked "Have you heard the great news about Jesus Christ?!?" I was expecting to have the door slammed in my face, but the guy just started laughing and asked if I wanted to come in for a beer, and I accepted. It actually turned into a good, civil conversation about his flat's blatant disrespect for his neighbours. He actually aplogised, and told me that his flat had sort of turned into the "party house" for all their friends, and that he himself was actually starting to get annoyed with it. I've been in exactly the same situation, so I gave him some advice on how to handle it. I also gave. Him permission to pretend to hate me, and start describing my partner and me as "the old cooks downstairs who will call the police if it gets to loud." That way he doesn't have to be the bad guy in his own home, and I have no problem being his bad guy scapegoat. Long story short, he aplogised profusely and promised to try to keep things more under control, and practically begged me to call the police if it ever got to that point again. We didn't talk about Christ, but I left that ugly NT on his table when I left, so who knows, right? Thank you, Randsom3d. Despite the fact that I originally treated following your advice as a joke, it could have very well solved my problem in its own way. So, thanks, haha. God definitely works in mysterious ways. smile

I think we would have a case to take this guy to court, but it's just such a pain in the bum that at least for now, we're not going to bother. Taking someone to court is more stressful than just moving again.

I know how you feel. The kids across the street have left trash in my truck, I woke up one night to find someone sitting on my truck, egged our cars 10x, left drug stuff in our front lawn, scaried my mom by walking through our yard in the middle of the night. They even dug up a dead cat and left it on someone's porch. What fixed it was a cop telling them that we can legally shoot them for trespassing and that nothing would happen to us, instead the cop will arrest them. If only you had a gun.

I think it belonged to one of my ancestors during the Revolution. That's all I really know. I'm not much of a weapons guy. I mean, I think epsecially antique weapons are really neat, I just don't know anything about them. Maybe one day when I have the time, I'll sit down and try to learn more about them. Add it to the ever-growing list of things I'll do "when I have the time."

I would call the cops and report a noise disturbance. I'm sure that when they get a ticket that they will tone it down.
