The empty space of the "General Discussion" was bothering me. emotion_donotwant
So, I decided to make this thread, because what group is a complete without a "What We're Reading" thread?

So, what are we reading?
What genres really interest you? Favorite author, series, book?
Lastly what was the first chapter book you ever read?
PostPosted: Fri Apr 20, 2012 6:58 am

YAY BOOKS!!! Sorry, I get a bit excited about books.

So, what are you reading?

Currently, I am re-reading A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the first Sherlock Holmes novel). I've been on a major re-reading kick lately.

What genres really interest you? Favorite author, series, book?

I'm interested in a wide assortment of literature, and it largely depends on my mood. I do lean toward fantasy and science fiction a lot as my fall back on books when I need something to read. I also particularly enjoy historical fiction, (some) young adult fiction, poetry, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Favorite authors would probably be Michael Crichton. His writing is very scientific and analytic, but still thrilling to read. Favorite series is probably Mercedes Lackey's elemental masters books. Favorite book is hands down, Christopher Morley's Parnassus on Wheels.

Lastly what was the first chapter book you ever read?
I believe the first chapter book I ever read was Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I know what you mean, I almost pee myself every time I get some cash to get a new one.
I have The Complete Sherlock Holmes vol. 1 and I've only managed to get through A Study in Scarlet since I've got it. e.e

Finding anything new about the books as you re-read them?

I've heard that Lackey's is a good one.
Never heard of Parnassus on Wheels

I remember reading Little House in the Big Woods. OuO
All I really remember about it is the part where they salted (or smoked?) the meat.

My first chapter book was Bunnicula...I think.

I remember reading Bunnicula back in grade school at some point.

"Never heard of it" it usually the response I get regarding Parnassus. I found an old copy in my uncle's house, and I've probably read it a dozen time now, but no one has ever heard of it.

Isn't it funny, which parts we remember about books we read as kids? The Little House books are actually pretty high on my list of to re-read books right now, haha. I've been finding a lot of differences between reading books as a kid and an adult. I re-read the 8 Anne of Green Gables books in the autumn, and I just had a totally new perspective on the series. Same with Sherlock Holmes; I'm just picking up different bits and pieces of the stories now than I did then.

Vampire bunnies are just awesome.

That's a lucky find then. What's it about?

I always remember random bits and scenes. I want to start rereading some of the books that I was forced to read in school. See if they're any different when you don't have a pressure of a test.

I hate when you re-read books that you read as a kid, and the book is just terrible.

So I just realized that I never responded to this thread. Whoops. I've been a bit absent-minded this week, just logging on long enough to post my writings and then getting offline. It's production week for the musical and the last couple weeks of class, so I've been crazy busy.

Aaaanyway, I don't recall ever re-reading something that was terrible. I've read books that were terrible, though, and tried to make it through to the end anyway, just to see if the book can redeem itself.

And as for Parnassus, in short, it's about taking a risk on adventure. It's a light-hearted, whimsical story and a short read. I highly recommend it.

No worries.

I think it may be that my tastes have changed a whole lost since I read the books and I just remember them fondly.
A book that I've re-read half a dozen times and really love is The Merline Conspiracy by Diane Wynne Jones.

I use to hate to stop reading a story, no matter how terrible it was. Recently I've been able to just stop reading a bad book.

It sounds interesting. I'll have to look it up.

Oooohh... Books!

What are we reading?

I finished my stack of newly-bought books just the other week. After that, I planned on re-reading some of my other books but I have to do a review this coming week so maybe next week.

What genres really interest you? Favorite author, series, book?

I enjoy fiction than non-fiction. To be more specific, I pick mystery, romance, adventure, science fiction, and fantasy most of the time (all with a little bit of humor or comedy, of course).

Before I graduate high school, I planned on finishing Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus series and then start on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series and Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World by college. I hope I'd be able to read a few more Classics but I doubt it.

What was the first chapter book you ever read?

Really? It's obviously Geronimo Stilton (I only found out this year - or was it last year - the true author of the series.) unless you count my fifth-grade book for a book report project which was Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz.

Ooohhh, yay~~ A spot to talk about books~~~ x3

Okay, so. What am I reading?

I am reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I saw the movie first, and as I read the book, I am quite happy to find most of it is accurate. So now that movie is one of my favorite movie-by-book films. Go Emma Stone~~! 8D (The Lightning Thief was the worst I've seen. |Shudder| xD Sadly, my friend and I just pointed out the differences between book and film the whole movie)

Hm. Genres . . . I like fiction (durr. xD) and I do like non-fiction. Mostly I just read about touching animal stories or read animal fact books, but still. xD To specify on fiction, I enjoy fantasy, historical, science (especially ones that involve time travel~), mystery, uhh . . . and just about every other kind you can think of. :3

My favorite author I'm sure is Tamora Pierce, since I've read very nearly all of her books. xD Of her books, I favor the Circle of Magic quartet, and The Song of the Lioness quartet. And who doesn't like The Protector of the Small? xD Okay, so I like all of them. Anyways, nuff gushing about the greatest person ever~

My favorite series is tied between Vampirates by Justin Somper, Warriors by Erin Hunter, The Heroes of Olympus (along with the
Percy Jackson series), and almost every other series I have ever read. ^^" Yeah, I'm not too good at picking favorites. I feel like each of them have their own sub-category they belong in. xDD

Now, my favorite book . . . Well I'll choose one for the sake of actually being decisive (but now that I think about it . . .). So I guess Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier. I find it amusing how all three books in it's series are named. (There's Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue, and Emerald Green. If you don't get it: xD If you do: xDDD)

Okay--my first chapter book~~ Well, I dunno. .-. I think it may have been a Geronimo Stilton book, but I can't remember too well. xDD

Oh boy, this is long. o-o I'll make the font smaller so it won't look so big . . .

@Nui:
Awesomeness about finishing off the stack.
Where do you post your reviews?
That's quite a few books to finishing before graduation. When do you graduate?

@StormWolf:
I finished that book a few months ago. I was surprised how much I liked it. Haven't seen the movie. I have a rule that I have to read the book before the movies, though I've only ever seen The Lightning Thief Movie.

I like Pierce's Immortals series the best.
I use to love Warriors by Erin Hunter. I stopped reading through after the third generation. I don't know how to call them.

I'm not sure I get the title thing. sweatdrop

@Desi: I try to read books before movies, but sometimes I hear it's just too amazing to miss and have to watch it. Other times I don't even realize the movies were made by books. ^^"

:{D Yay~! Pierce fan~~! |Spazzes, then faints|
I still love the Warriors,I only have the first series, though, because that's the one I liked the best. I still gasp at Tigerstar's betrayal. xD

S'okay, I didn't actually think anyone would get it. There's these three GBA (Game Boy Advance :{D) Pokemon games that are called the exact same. Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green. (I know this because I have all three whee ) xD I dunno, Imma dork and just find it absolutely hilarious.

*I know. I took about three weeks to finish four books. I could've taken only about two weeks but I needed them to last at least half of my vacation time. (some are just too lucky to get three months of summer vacation.)
*I don't post reviews. yum_puddi
*I'm only entering high school senior year this coming school year... Yup. I've got more time. I'd be graduating high school next March.

I picked up this book called Back On Murder a few days ago. The yellow cover attracted me. I pick so many books on cover alone. sweatdrop
It's a mystery told from first person POV, present tense. I actually like it.

Lately, I've been finding a lot of present tense novels.

@Stormwolf:
3nodding It happens.
I have a friend who, if there's a movie out of the book, has to watch the movie before the book. I recommended The Hunger Games to her and she wanted to see the movie first.

Pierce is a good writer. I like how her series connect with each other, just slightly.
It still gets to me how it all messed with Bluestar's mind. sad

lol.
I don't play the Pokemon games and my friends deem me as lame.

@Nui:
I can't wait until summer vacation...It's nice to kind of take your time with a book though. See it from different angles.

I see. O.O

Just a little less than a year! Plenty of time.

I'm currently reading "The Game of Thrones," although I'm not sure yet if I would be reading it if I hadn't started on the show first.

I love Michael Crichton, too. Wonderful author. His books keep me hooked until the end. I jump around with genres. I stay away from smut, but I do like a light romance once in a while. I tend to stick with YA fiction because that's what I want to work with.

I'm almost done reading "Fish Whistle" by Daniel Pinkwater. It's a really amusing collection of short pieces on the author's life and experiences. I got it for free on Kindle, and I think I'm going to buy a copy for my dad.

I'm also (slowly) re-reading "Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light" by Tanya Huff. It's a fantasy book about a mentally challenged young woman, a street performer (or "bard" as some of the characters), and an angel, fighting to save the world from the forces of darkness and evil. It's got a very, very interesting and good-hearted take on the subject of so-called "mental disabilities" in modern society, along with great fantasy elements.
