Paris had a thing for swings.

He didn’t get to use them very often. Between working and dance and Chris and senshidom, there hadn’t been much time for such things. Every once in a while he would pass by the little playground by his house and look at the swings and remember being a little kid. Sometimes, when there wasn’t anyone else around, he would even cross through the gate and make his way around all the other equipment to sit down and have a go at it.

This park wasn’t by his house, but it reminded him of it. It was small and a little worn, with nothing more than a jungle-jim, a single metal slide, a set of monkey bars, a merry-go-round, and a swing-set built for four. He passed by it occasionally, depending on what route he took home from dance. Once, he’d even saved Peter from a youma here.

It was empty now, except for him. Or at least it had been empty when he got there. Trudging toward the bus stop to make his way back to Chris’s place, he’d caught the swing set out of the corner of his eye. No one had been using it. After a moment of deliberation, he’d pushed open the rusting gate set in the chain-linked fence, walked across the lot full of woodchips, and settled himself on the swing farthest to he right, dropping his dance bag onto the ground next to him.

Paris pushed himself slowly, hands gripping each chain as his feet dragged lightly against the ground, disrupting some of the woodchips beneath him. He tilted his head back to stare up at the sky. It was clear and blue and perfect, but he couldn’t enjoy it.

Sometimes when he was sad or lost, swings seemed like the perfect place to just let his thoughts idle.

Millie was walking to the park. It was another night were she should have been visiting her dad, but again, he hadn’t called to confirm anything. It had been a long time since she had seen him, and normally she would just go over to Jetts or something instead, or even go patrolling…but today, she just wanted to be alone and go play at the park.

She was very surprised to find it almost completely empty, except for one person over on the Swings…huh. It looked like it was a teenager or someone old…That was strange. Millicent began her self-proclaimed day of fun by first climbing up the sliding board a few times and letting herself slide back down, then by playing on the monkey bars for a few minutes, then finally, she made her way to the swings, sitting only one away from the stranger, since the one on the end was for a baby.

She pumped her legs back and forth and closed her eyes as her self made breeze billowed through her hair, then gave a little pout, slowing down and looking at the other swinger. “Are you okay? You look really sad. I’m Millie.”

She didn’t like when people were sad…it made her feel very sad to think about others being sad, so she figured that sometimes it was her job and duty to make them feel better…and sometimes she knew that they didn’t want any help from a ‘silly little girl’, but…Sometimes when someone helped them, they would feel better. Sometimes.

Paris hardly noticed the little girl until she’d actually spoken to him. He’d heard her playing on some of the other equipment, but he hadn’t taken the time to look at her until he heard her voice and realized by her comments that she must be talking to him. He hadn’t seen anyone else enter the park anyway. At least for now, it was empty but for the two of them.

He lowered his head to look over at her. She wasn’t too young. Old enough to be here on her own, he supposed, as long as she lived relatively close by. Maybe around Peter’s age. Paris tried to smile at her, but it felt somewhat weak and strained.

“Oh, no, I’m fine,” he said. It wasn’t true. He imagined she might even be able to tell it wasn’t true, if she was as perceptive as she seemed. He didn’t look fine. He hadn’t for a couple of weeks now. No matter how hard he tried to go about the rest of his life as normal, there was still that gaping hole. In the end, Paris supposed it wasn’t really fair to lie to a little kid. It wasn’t like she was being annoying. She was only concerned.

“I’m Paris,” he replied. He tried smiling again and faired a little better this time. “I was just… thinking, really. It’s… I mean, it’s not really anything for you to worry about,” he told her as kindly as he could. “My dad just… well, he was sick for a while. I guess out here it feels safer to think about it, because then I won’t have to worry any of my friends. They’ve had to put up with enough of my mess recently.”
