My mom bought a lot of peaches from a local farmer (or whatever the appropriate term is) last summer so she could make peach jam (put it on toast or bread and it tastes like cake - I swear - delish!). I collected - and I just counted - 16 pits from the remains thinking there may be a use for them beyond garbage filler. They're dried now, sitting in a baggy on my desk.
I really wasn't sure which subforum to post this in since I'm not sure what sort of use they could be.
Any suggestions for what to do with them? I may post a picture of them later but for now here's one from google:

I tried to sprout one last year to turn it into a tiny peach plant, but it took forever and did nothing.
I broke off the hard outer shell, put the smaller seed into a ziploc bag with a tiny bit of water, and left it in the fridge for months. It never sprouted, but I may have rushed it, and also I rarely added more drops of water to keep it moist. You could always try, and see what happens. I had read they needed a hibernation stage, that's why mine were in the fridge. You could just bury them in the ground a little bit and see if eventually they do something.

You could glue cotton and eyes on them, and make them little sheep. lol.

Hmm. My only problem with sprouting is I'll probably be moving to campus housing the school year after next. I don't think they'd be happy with me having a tree - no matter how small - in my room (bedrooms have the windows). I also don't know if the pits are optimal for growing since I don't know what sort of peach tree they came from. Just that the peaches were yummy. Hm. I will keep it in mind though. It may be fun to experiment a bit with later. smile
rofl They would be cute sheep. I wonder if I could make them into cows. I know someone who has a bit of a thing for cows and they have a dairy farm. Would work out quite well if I could gift them.
I was sort of thinking they look like brains. Sort of. I was thinking they could have a Halloween craft use. (I love Halloween~) Or... maybe a way to bury a few in the park or a forest as... "fertilizer bombs"? Kind of like gorilla gardening but for nutrition. I'm not sure what's really in peach pits though - do they have a lot of nitrogen and other things useful for plant growth? Would I have to soak them before I buried them? Would they even be useful?

I had read to break them open and just try to grow the inner seed bit, but I am not sure if that is advisable for the bury-and-see method.
It does seem that yummy peaches have a better chance of making a yummy peach tree than things like apples do. And worst case, peach trees have beautiful flowers, and the fruit will still feed animals even if humans don't like the taste ;D
It would probably be best to bury or plant them around when they would naturally be planted (fall, when they would fall from trees), unless you stored them in a cold damp place all winter. They may just rot if they aren't given their cold period before the warm.
