Azrael alighted on the thick branch of a large tree growing in an all too familiar grove. It had been such a long time, and it had changed a bit, but her memories of this place, of him, remained the same. And she wanted to see him, and she wanted it to be the way it was before because she had missed him so much while she was away. But was it too late? Had Charis grown tired of waiting for her? Met another vixen? Moved on?
Azrael couldn't bring herself to dwell on the negatives, but she knew it was her own fault. She was the one who had disappeared. And why? Why had she ruined a great relationship with her absence? It certainly hadn't been intentional, but she blamed herself regardless. She had gotten lost in the desert, and after finding her way back to the area, she feared it may have been too late. This was her first time visiting the grove since returning from the desert. What would Charis think of her after she stood him up after that second date? Azrael had been too afraid to face him.
But Azrael was not one to move on quickly, especially without any sort of closure. Her desire to see Charis again had finally overpowered any previous worries. So she returned to this grove that he might not even visit today. Just in case. Just for a chance. Even if she was too late.

Why did he keep doing this to himself. Charis had to wonder that as he flew back to the grove yet again. He knew she wouldn’t be there. Just like all the other times she wouldn’t be there. Azrael was gone and yet she lingered in his heart like the echo of the sweetest song. He had never met another that was a kind and caring as her. His grey angel who had gotten him to speak and who had opened his heart up to love, she was gone.
Flying to the grove Charis didn’t even have to pay attention to where he was going anymore. He had this place memorized like the feel of his own wings. He came here whenever the air of the city became hard to swallow. Perhaps he should stop going to the grove and go visit another place. Like where he had met the green fox Leo who had told him to stop moping as much as he had been. Closing his eyes Charis pulled in his wings a bit so he came down as a hawk would. Landing quickly and knowingly. He shook his wings once he landed and without further adue promptly lay down with a flop on his stomach and just starred at the grass in front of him. It was pointless to look around he already knew the leaves of the trees where changing their colors preparing for the coming winter.
(*wants to strangle Charis for not looking at landing zone or checking to see if it's safe* Sometimes I hate my own muses for my foxes.)

And suddenly, with a rush of wind and a swirl of falling autumn leaves, he appeared before her. But how was this possible? Could it be that Charis had been waiting for her just as eagerly as she had sought to return to him? It was inconceivable! Surely she had fallen asleep, the image before her merely a creation of her own subconscious. Azrael wouldn't be too surprised if that were the case - disappointed, but not surprised - for reuniting with Charis was often the subject of many of her dreams at night.
Azrael stood on the branch and inched closer to him, away from the trunk. He was lying on the ground now, seemingly unaware of her presence. He looked well, she was happy to note with a small smile. Certainly more handsome than she remembered. No memories compared to the real thing. But then, was this the real thing? Or was she still imagining things?
Absorbed in her thoughts, Azrael didn't notice the branch she was walking along fork into two thinner branches. She stepped between them and came tumbling down with a slight scream. 'Well, this is familiar,' was her only thought before hitting the ground in a tangle of limbs.

His ears went straight up as Charis heard a small scream. Trunning his head he looked just in time to see a phim tumble out a tree and land on the ground. Wasting no time at all Charis got up and turned in one smooth motion to see if the other fox was alright. “Excuse me are you alri…..” His words died in his throat as he recognized the phim that was on the ground. Feeling the entire world spin and tilt for a moment he wasn’t sure what was going on.
In front of him was Azreal. Which was impossible since Azreal was gone. He had come here several times since she had left and she had been gone then. There was no reason why she should be back now. His tongue felt heavy and awkward in his mouth. It was as though he was back how he originally was and couldn’t speak.
“Azreal?” Leaning closer to the vixen he realized that it was without a doubt Azreal. His grey angel was back, but why had she been up in the tree. Did she not want him to see her? “Are you alright?” That sentence brought back memories, though it seemed she had always been the one to ask him.

Azrael was frozen to the spot, and an awkward spot it was, having just fallen from a tree. But she couldn't think about that right now. He was here: Charis! It was really him, couldn't possibly be her imagination anymore. But her joy was suddenly overpowered by sorrow. Or was it shame? Azrael still couldn't get over how much pain she caused herself by getting lost, and accidentally leaving him without any warning.
She nodded very slightly at his questions. "Yes, Charis, it is me," she said quietly, "and yes, I believe I'm fine." Though, Azrael had no way of actually telling how her body was feeling. It still felt a little paralyzed, not from the fall, but from the shock. She was sure she was fine, but Charis dominated all thoughts of physical well-being at the moment, and Azrael didn't want to worry him by being in pain, regardless.
"Charis, I..." Azrael began, but she didn't know what to say.

Looking into her eyes Charis wasn’t sure what he saw there. She looked in pain and yet at the same time happy. Charis didn’t know what he could say. Should he stay or should he flee? A part of him wanted to yell and ask why Azreal had left him? Another part wanted to ask why she came back? Still another part of him just wanted to grab her roughly and hold her close never letting go. He wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. All the pain he had gone through when she had disappeared came back at once. What had been a dull throb became so sharp he to sit down. “Azrael.. can you stand?” His mind might be blank when it came to what to do next for the two of them, but his automatic protective and caring response seemed to kick in. He reached out hesitantly to help her but stopped just short of touching her not sure if she would even want him to. “May I?” He felt he had to ask. It was the most and the least he could do.
