Lyle trudged through the plains as his Sableye ran on ahead of him. It was a couple days since they'd last been here, since Spinel had been beaten up by a wild Eevee and had to be carried back to the Pokemon Center. He'd wanted to make sure his Sableye was perfectly OK before going out again. The pokemon was just as energetic and mischievous as ever, but the defeat bothered Lyle. If he couldn't beat a wild pokemon, what chance did he have against other trainers? He needed to get better at battling if he wanted to be a good trainer.

Niji was, once again, minding his own business, eating lunch, when he heard a racket coming his way. His head swiveled towards the sound, his ears going back in annoyance.

(Didn't you use 1000 HP for Niji before?)
Spinel noticed the Eevee at about the same time it noticed him. he said in surprise.
Lyle looked up when he heard Spinel say "Sable, Sableye!" and found his pokemon staring at that same Eevee. Her perked up. "What luck! Let's see if we can do better this time!" he said. He'd read up on Sableyes some more, so he felt more ready to battle now. "Start with a Confuse Ray!"
Spinel didn't mind a rematch. His eyes flashed eerie colors, then shot a beam of disorienting light towards the Eevee.

Lyle frowned. That hadn't seemed to work too well. OK, he had something else he wanted to try. "OK Spinel, Rock Smash!"
Oh, not this again. Hadn't the boy been looking up more attacks? But Spinel did what he was told and ran forward to slam its paw at the Eevee.

Niji danced to the side, but didn't get his tail out of the way in time. "Vee!" he yelped, and whirled to bite almost instinctively at the source of the pain.

Spinel snatched his paw out of the way of teh Eevee's snapping jaws. he taunted as he swung for another attack.

Niji woofed out a breath as the paw smacked him, then his eyes narrowed and he lunged at the Sableye, jaws open.

Spinel jumped out of the way of the second bite and laughed at the Eevee. He didn't even need his trainer's repeat of "Rock Smash!" to know what to do. He jumped forward for another smack at the pale pokemon.

Shaking off the blow, Niji gathered energy. With an enraged snarl, he then launched a Shadow Ball at the Sableye.

Spinel got smacked in the face with this attack, which cut off his laughter abruptly. He rubbed his face with his paw as he got ready for the next attack.
Lyle stared at the Eevee a moment more. Maybe now? ...Nah, better wait and see what happened. Instead he said, "Try another Confuse Ray."
Spinel had of course been expecting another Rock Smash, but he switched to teh disorienting light quickly enough.
