Sailor Rainbow, the powerful guardian of the galaxy, the unattainable princess, had split her darkness from herself. She remained pure, but that act birthed Black Rainbow, a twin princess. Rainbow could not kill her other half; to do so would be to kill herself. But her power had been reduced by the split, and neither she nor Black Rainbow could gain the advantage over the other.

For centuries, the true princess fought with her other self.

Black Rainbow was just as clever as the true princess, and knew that she could not destroy her without consequences. So she devised a plan and struck when the time was right. She spent an age gathering energy from the youma, the demon race that haunted the galaxies. Powerful youma had been driven from the planets by Sailor Rainbow in her prime, but the shadows, the weaklings, still remained. Black Rainbow took them in, biding their time until they had stored enough energy to trap Rainbow once and for all.

In a last desperate attempt, as the walls of her prison closed around her, Rainbow released her power. It split into eight fragments, eight colors, and descended upon Earth, falling among the race that she had cared for. She whispered a phrase to the fragments, one that Black Rainbow could not hear, and succumbed to the evil one's trap. In her rage, some of Black Rainbow's power fragmented off as well, the pieces joining the others on Earth before she could recall them.

All of the fragments of Rainbow's power had made their way into the hands of those who could control them, but lay dormant. All of the relics made from Black Rainbow's fractured power remained hidden. After a few years of searching and fleeing the youma, Murasaki finally found one of those that she had been searching for. Though at the time she did not know the significance of what she was about to do, Murasaki met and awakened Sumire Haruno as Sailor Violet.

Sumire, a girl of 15 who had just left school for her summer vacation, took up her violet crystal and transformed for the very first time as youma swarmed around her and Murasaki. Drawn to the fragment of power she possessed, they fought her. With guidance from the owl, Sailor Violet was able to blast away the enemy, decimating them and leaving nothing but piles of ash and her previously-normal life behind.

Sailor Violet, with the power of the moon, was to become the leader of Rainbow's senshi. Her awakening forced all of the other senshi to transform, though many did not yet grasp their new powers. Murasaki urged her to take up her mantle as the leader of the princess' new guardians. She was to find the true, reborn princess and her fellow senshi, and together they would be able to defeat Black Rainbow.

Miaka Sato, a half-Japanese student who had always been friendly with Sumire, had been sleeping badly with a terrible headache when the red cross brooch her mother had given her suddenly lit up with a bright red light. Crossing the room to the vanity where her brooch sat, Miaka touched it gently. Her pain ebbed away, leaving her feeling warm and content, and as the pain washed from her body, her clothing changed into a white and red fuku with a long red cape. Confused, but feeling much better than she had in a long time, Miaka slipped out of her bedroom window to sit on the roof, falling asleep wrapped in the cape and looking at the stars, wondering what it was that called to her.

Over the next few weeks, Miaka continued to wear the brooch, realizing slowly that it helped her to make others calm and well. When leaving her high school after a summer meeting for the science club, which she had joined because of her interest in medicine, she heard a commotion going on in the nearby gym. Sumire had also been at the school for a meeting of the school newspaper members, and their combined lights drew a group of youma. Sumire attempted to hold them off while Murasaki flew for Leyna, but she was taking a beating and one of the youma absorbed one of the students who had been unlucky enough to wander in its path. The youma had grown to about eight feet tall, deep red and heavily muscled and decked out in a bright blue sleeveless gi with yellow stars on its biceps. As the youma raced for Sumire, Miaka transformed and dove in, dragging her friend out of the way.

As Leyna arrived with Murasaki to help clean up the mess, Miaka was able to use her new abilities to heal Sailor Violet. She joined Violet and Yellow as Sailor Red.
