User Image It was on hushed tones that she'd first heard of this pride, so dedicated to their own strengths that they took what they wanted from the weak. The mere first words were enough to send her searching for it, a pride she would be proud to call herself a part of.
Every step she took in the right direction, she knew it to be so... she could feel it in her very core that she was meant to be here, among the strongest of both lion and lioness alike.
A smirk crossed her face, her features breaking out of their usual calm at the anticipation she felt.
She approached the pridal grounds, no nervous thought passing through her mind as she erupted into a violent roar, challenging any and all who would face her from this brawn-based land.

User ImageAs a captain, Ru technically didn't have to patrol the pride's borders to watch for intruders and answer challenges, but he preferred to continue to do so. He was outlander born and felt a sort of a duty to keep an eye out for others of that persuasion and help them figure out if this was where they really belonged by either beating them in a fight or being beaten.

Also, he was a lion who liked to be on the move much of the time and so the patrol route he walked kept him in more or less constant motion for the duration of his shift on patrol. He preferred it to sentry duty, he had decided. Sentry duty was pretty boring, being stationary as it was, unless someone came upon them. The sentry points were at the most accessible approaches to the pride. Patrols like the one Ru walked were through the woods usually, which also appealed to him.

It did require him to do a bit of hunting, however, when he heard roars like the one currently resounding through the area, because outlanders were rarely walking on direct intercept courses with the loosely planned trails reavers walked on patrol. They were discouraged from making trails, after all, so each patrol more or less had to forge their own way.

"Hello," he said softly to himself, pleased to hear what had to be an outlander looking to fight an askorun. When he came within sight of the pale lioness he offered her a different greeting:

"It is a good day to die."

The look that passed her features could be nothing short of being assured of her own strength as she boldly approached him, giving him a once-over.
"I assure you, succumbing to death at my hands would do you no honor." She circled him, but not to prolong her fight. Her intent was calculating, looking for any weakness she could take advantage of.
"I am Freyja... and my intent is simple; to join your ranks, or to come close to death trying to achieve it."
Her gaze sharpened, and she gave Ruzanski mere seconds to respond to her taunting, claws flicking barely along his haunches to get her point across without so much as a mark.
He would be ready, or the next swing would be real.

"You think not?" Ru inquired, wondering what it was about her that made her an unacceptable harbinger of death.

"As long as a Stormborn dies in battle, there is honor to be had. However, I was merely remarking that it is a good day to die. I have no intention that either one of us should do so." He cast a sly smirk in her direction. "Unless you had other plans?"

She did seem to have other plans. She wished to join the Stormborn. Well. He'd figured it would be something like that. She looked vaguely familiar, but he couldn't recall who it was she reminded him of.

"We'll see how that goes," he said, stepping to one side to avoid her sweeping claws. Traditional Stormborn would go on about how a reaver should never avoid being hit, but Ru thought that was moronic. He was tough, but he wasn't that tough. He didn't know anyone who was, either.

Since he was already moving, he continued his flowing sidestep to the left so that he had nearly half circumnavigated his opponent and could make an attack on her flank or hindquarters. He eschewed these more obvious options and in his next movement he jumped forward at an oblique angle to strike her shoulder from behind.

Too slow. She had seen what was headed her way and had stepped out of the way, but being younger had cost her in the situation. She looked at the fresh blood springing into view against her white coat and growled, but not in anger.
She was, of course, but it was nothing compared to the war lust she bore in that moment.
Putting her strength in her hind legs, she leaped at Ru, aiming for his legs; if he couldn't swing claws, he couldn't win.

Ru had considered using his superior weight to press his opponent to the ground and trap her there until she submitted, but at the last moment he had elected to leave her with just a glancing blow across the shoulders. His claws drew forth a growl and blood that quickly stained her white fur, but he didn't feel the usual surge of lust that usually accompanied the sight and smell of blood. That was odd, he thought distantly.

How she had managed to turn around to face him again so quickly was something of a mystery, and Ru was given bare moments to react to her next attack. This time he couldn't sidestep to avoid her. Instead he gathered his paws beneath him and sprang forward, intending to leap over her as she dove under him. Likely they would pass each other by without doing any damage. He was all right with that because he intended to use this time to prepare for another charge.

He roared as he jumped.

In all her life, Freyja had been nothing but assured of her own strength. It was only now, in the heat of a challenge, that she saw where she was wrong.
She had timed herself in what she thought to be an appropriate manner, but Ru would not have it, it seemed. It was only as he soared overhead that she knew this was not her battle. But stubborn pride wouldn't allow her to lose when it was inches from her nose.
In watching her opponent, however, she had become unsure of herself for a brief moment. And in that brief moment, she had lost her landing potential and slid on the rocky terrain, growling at her own stupidity as she shook herself off, getting up and turning against her opponent. Whether or not she was able to continue was not the problem, but her own resolve as one younger and weaker.
She was giving him a window of opportunity, and she knew it.

Ru saw the opportunity he had been given and made the conscious decision not to exploit it. He didn't need to. Something in the young lioness's posture and manner had changed. Her confidence had taken a beating and it didn't look as though her heart was really in this fight. She wouldn't win at this point, and there was no reason for Ru to injure her.

"Enough," he said, rising from his ready crouch. "You've lost this battle."

He took a step backward, making it clear that he was not going to attack any further. If she chose to attack, he would dodge or defend himself, but he would not continue this challenge. The askorun was for outlanders to prove their worthiness, and Ru had already fought in his. He had nothing to prove here.

"What happens next is up to you," he told her. "You can admit you'll not win and come back to fight another day, or we can continue. If you choose the second option, you'll be hurt. Maybe badly."

Freyja's pride was hurt; it was written in every detail of her face, etched into the folded back ears and wrinkle nose.
Childishness would not have the best of her today, and she took a deep breath, raising her gaze to meet Ru neutrally, "I will return, you can be sure of that. I can see I will not win here and now."
A final bow of her head, the only only thing she could muster to keep from crying. Her cheeks, however, would not be anything but a flushed red, embarrassment at losing something she couldn't avoid.
She turned her back to him, heading away from the pride with a sure-footed step that her emotions couldn't mimic.
She had to be stronger, and only time and training would give it to her.
A glance at her wound, a nose wrinkle, and her voice was agitated.
"This is going to sting come tomorrow."

Ru remained on his guard while the lioness spoke. Attacking mid-sentence was difficult, but there were warriors among the Stormborn who could do it without giving any warning at all. Ru wasn't one of them. His tone and cadence always changed. But since seeing the warlord do it once while sparring Ru had been more wary of others at the beginning and end of fights when they started talking.

It didn't seem like she intended to make a final rally though, and Ru watched as the pale lioness bowed her head and turned her back on him. Turning her back was a gesture of defiance that he wondered if she was even aware of making. It made him grin. She wasn't broken, just a little scratched and bruised. That was good. Ru hated fighting girls anyway, and he hated even more when they couldn't handle losing with grace.

Once she passed out of sight Ru returned to his route. At the end of his shift he would tell his relief about the lioness in case she decided to return that day. He would also recommend that she be ignored unless she tried to get too close to the stronghold. One beating in a day was all someone really ought to endure at her age.
