I've always noticed the rythms in MCing, spoken word, rap and poetry and for a long time I pondered over the idea of the potential it had to work with dance in some way. I heard beats in poetry just as I hear beats in music.
Last year, I got the chance to explore this idea, when I was offered the opportunity to curate my own show, aptly named Flow! at the Contact Theatre in Manchester, UK. One of the nation's premiere hip hop theatre's, it was an honour to be offered the chance to have my own show there.
Surely enough, my company Broken Rose Performing Arts performed an outstanding show to a huge crowd, mixing the two genres together. A poet and a dancer would perform together, with each artist responding to the other.
Check out the videos below for the results. Please let me know your thoughts as I'm currently looking for ways of exploring this idea further.
By the way, the dancer who performs second in the first video is me! blaugh
