It had been strange to be at a bar out of uniform again; for so long, now, he'd been winding his way through the crowds as Ilmenite, largely abstaining from alcohol, siphoning energy from an enthusiastic crowd as he worked his way through bars and nightclubs and only looked a bit out of place in the uniform. He'd danced, some, and he'd cornered strangers, but it had been to drain them and leave them slumped in the corners for drunk friends to take home, or bartenders to find at close.
Now, though, he was back in battered t-shirts and too-big pants, had slipped into the bar and looked around like it was unfamiliar. Too quiet, this place, smaller than the big, packed rooms he'd been frequenting recently. He'd sat at the bar, long legs stretched out against the foot rest, and folded his arms across the counter. Too skinny, too sharp, as ever he was IDed as being too young and expecting a skeptical look when he produced an ID that was actually printed with his real age.
It hadn't come. Instead he'd looked up into glittering, amused green eyes, and his own expression had froze in recognition.
Now, an hour or more later -- he'd lost track of time -- he was folded more comfortably at the bar with his chin and hands and chatting up an impossibly-attractive bartended. Tall, blond, buff, tattoos showing across bare biceps, and obviously gay as they came, it was easy to see the draw. Easier still to see why he'd slipped into old habits, tone gone dry the way it did when he flirted, his own mouth curving into a smile more often that not. Ever could, at least, blame it on the two finished drinks lined up next to his half-empty glass.

He’d come seeking company, he’d never have admitted that once upon a time, but there were people he wanted to stay close to. Ever was one of those people, for better or for worse. He wasn’t a familiar patron of bars; there were still too many people even in this relatively quiet press of people, varying in volume as inebriation took hold. He, for his part, talked too much when he got drunk. He was positive on that front.
He’d threaded his way through the tables, a bored expression not quite pushing off the pondering gazes who suspected, and rightly so that he was under age. He’d slowed his steps when he saw Ever at the bar, no, not just Ever, Ever and a very handsome bar tender, blond hair, built… the green eyes were the clincher in the knot of discomfort and jealousy that made a fist in his stomach. Wonderful, everything he wasn’t, including not being Ever’s literal ‘boss’ after hours.
Jealous, the word wasn’t even one he tried to push away. He watched the man drift away from behind the bar and head for the men’s room. Pursing his lips he pushed hands into his pockets and followed. Anyone powered up in the city would have felt the brief flair of chaotic power, though it vanished again just as quickly.
Zac re-emerged from the Men’s room, casual, calmer than he had been moments before and rolling something in his hand for a moment before he slid onto a stool beside Ever and took a few pretzels from a bowl.
“Fancy finding you here.” He said trying to effect a casual manner, he rested one hand on the bar, carefully cupping his ‘prize’. “Am I interrupting?”

Approaching feet got Ever's attention, made him raise his head from the now-almost-empty third drink -- a smile on his face, a raised eyebrow, maybe some joke about falling in prepared on the tip of his tongue. But this wasn't the bartender he'd been flirting with. Blond hair had been swapped for blue, and a good foot's worth of height chopped away.
Maybe he should have winced, looked guilty. Apologized. That wasn't Ever. Maybe he didn't even realize. Instead he recognized Zack and his smile widened, went crooked, fingers shifting around the edge of the glass. He was a happy, friendly sort of drunk tonight.
"...you're out!" Surprise, yes, but not horror. Not a hand-in-the-cookie-jar expression. He beamed at Zac.

“You make it sound like I live in a box!” He chided, though in some ways he more or less did these days, all work and no play made you a General King, or something like that. “… Maybe I should get out more often though.” He watched the expression on Ever’s face, expecting, maybe hoping for guilt, but there was none. Maybe it wasn’t as bad as he thought, or, maybe that was just Ever.
“You were expecting someone else?” he toyed with what was hidden under his hand thinking of the man he’d left pushed into the biggest stall of the bathroom. “The bar tender?” He reached to snag at the edge of Ever’s cup, both to inspect what he’d been drinking and, actually to steal a sip.

What he'd been drinking would probably make Zac splutter -- because apparently this bartender [or maybe Ever] had decided that the best way to make a Vodka Tonic was to fill a glass with vodka and then gently spritz the tonic water over it. The final taste was close to paint thinner, bottom-grade alcohol as opposed to the good stuff. It could have used another distilling or four.
He watched Zac drinking it in a bemused way, chin settled on his hand. "I, uh, know the bartender, actually." He didn't clarify what kind of knowing that was, but his eyes flashed with amusement for a moment. "Did you talk to him?"

“Well, I saw him for a moment.” He admitted, considering “Know huh?” He added and then coughed, eyes watering and shoved the glass back firmly. “God.” He wheezed. “What are you –drinking? Turpentine?”
He paused considering and then dropped something into Ever’s glass with a dull clink, pearlescent and white. Zac’s fingers tapped for a moment. “If you want to keep flirting with him you might need that though.” He sighed, lips tightening. He’d been an a** about it, but –really-, he wasn’t going to let him feel bad about it NOW. If Ever wanted to go back to an older…hotter flame, fine… just…FINE.
Except, he’d looked happy to see him, jealous, that was worse than valentines wasn’t it? God damn it he was just making this easier for everyone wasn’t he. He was turning into his MOTHER. He gripped the edge of the bar at the thought, horrified.
“If you crush it, he’ll be right back.” He shrugged almost too sharply trying to stay irritated, jealous was better than guilty, it had to be.

Dulled reflexes made him slow; Ever pulled his glass back and started to take a sip before he noticed the bead in his drink. He paused with it not quite to his mouth, blinking blurrily down into the vodka. It was another moment before he recognized it for what it was, and some of the calm went out of him, expression sharpening.
His eyes flashed back onto Zac and he frowned, finally, as he dipped fingers into his drink to dig out the pearl of energy. Turned it over between scarred fingertips and tried to put what had happened in logical order.
"I thought this wasn't on the agenda anymore." It came out mildly reproachful, and still confused. Ever didn't break it immediately. "Especially just a couple blocks from home."

“I help MAKE the agenda.” He said with narrowing eyes, weather or not it was strictly true Zac was still bristling cold in that moment. “You know, when I was a lieutenant, the agenda was strictly, ‘rip out their star seeds and hide the body’, and no one had any idea we could do something like this.” His eyes darted to the seed of energy and back. “Now you can get back to flirting, like nothing happened.”
Except they still sometimes took star seeds. “I’ll let you get back to it, he looks like your type.”

Through the alcohol and the friendly good-cheer, Zac's meaning finally came through loud and clear -- and understanding was reflected in Ever's face. Briefly. Then his eyes went shuttered and his smile came back, lazy and crooked and perhaps a bit brittle, as he shifted the pearl of energy between his fingers.
"Oh, he is. Definitely was two years ago." It was mean -- unnecessary. Ever should have bit his tongue, especially considering the power Zac had just shown. He shot a look back toward the bathroom, where presumably the bar tender lay sprawled in a bathroom stall. Ruining his two-hundred-dollar-shoes.
"He had a really nice apartment, then, too. I think inherited?" Black eyes resettled on Zac.

The scowl deepened for a moment, fingers tapped on the counter in rapid staccato, reduced to his index finger tapping a few times and then a heavy sigh with narrowed eyes. He reached out and snatched at the orb of energy meaning to crush the thing if Ever was just going to toy with it. “Just crush the damned thing you a**, I’m going back to work.”
His shoulders had dipped and he’d lost the angry look, but there was something else there now, maybe resignation?

Impossible to tell if he eventually would have given in and dropped the pearl against the counter. As it was, it was only too easy for Zac to pluck it from his fingertips, Ever's hand resettling against his mostly-empty glass now.The smile was still light on his lips, not quite mean but getting dangerously close, just watching Zac fuss with it for a moment.
"Are you done, then?" Dark eyes flicked back up to meet Zac's, and he didn't look terribly amused behind them. "With the stomping in and the accusations and the heavy-handed holier-than-though?"

“Well I –was-“ He grumbled, eyes narrowing. “Not like I can change you, if you’re going to go home with him, He’s about a million times more attractive, and I bet he’s got a LOT less stupid ‘just out of high school’ insecurity issues. OK?” Hangs clenched an unclenched, shaking.
“I’m a terrible person, I –like- you, no, I more than like you… so I do stupid damned things like…like Valentines, but that’s asking YOU to change isn’t it…”
He stopped and exhaled. “********…”
