New Beginnings (Entry)

The wide open seas is all that he could see from the cliff he stood on. Ryder found himself alone and isolated. How did he end up this way? For now, he couldn't remember. His mind was a like running into a maze that was covered in a dense fog. Not only was it difficult to navigate within to reach his path, but to find the simple answer of why he woke up washed up on this unpopulated island. Coughing up some water, he managed to drag himself onto shore and slowly up to the top of a ridge that he could from a distance., the very ridge he stood on now.

In the here and now, he stood there, holding his head and searched his memories for answers. There has to be something, a clue perhaps. he thought to himself. In his scrambles through the maze of his memories, he saw flashes of what seemed like a storm and him clinging to a raft, barely conscious. A storm? His thoughts were out loud and to himself as he turned to face the direction of the beach. “That would explain the pieces of wood around me...” Though the question that had yet to be answered is why. “Why was I on that raft?” Any further probing of his mind for questions was put on hold. A forceful rumble from his stomach told him it's time to search for food.

Ryder took a step forward only to stop. Hesitating on another thought, he was far from his turf. Far from familiar land. What if he's trespassing on someone's home? The island he was on was small enough to be inhabited by a family or perhaps a village. He didn't feel right intruding. Not in the slightest. With a sigh, he resigned himself to returning to the beach, perhaps finding his way off of this island. It was a better idea to him than trespassing.

It was the honorable thing to do, but how? As he reached the beach, he gazed around, examining the wreckage. There was only shards of wood left from what the churning sea spat out. He would need to find more wood in the forest which was not a problem for him. Figuring he'd only need a few logs to get and perhaps a rope fashioned with something. The husk from a coconut perhaps? There were information, old by the feel, that laid dormant in his mind. Information that begun to rise when he was in need.

Ryder traveled deeper into the forest, searching out some logs and material to create rope. He kept an eye out for any sign of life. It was quiet. The only sounds he could hear were that of nature. Chirps and coo's of birds of all kinds could be heard around him along with the gentle breeze and creaking trees. It could be summed up in a single word, peaceful. Ryder enjoyed this. He found a sort of balance within himself in nature. He wouldn't mind living here himself. Though it would be lonely to have an entire island to himself.

After a while, Ryder found himself lost in his thoughts. So much so that he didn't hear the odd sound of metal clinking against rocks. The soft sound of voices muttering in a grumpy fashion amongst other voices. What he did notice however was the lack of chirps and eventually a strange creature standing before him. How did he not notice her before? If he had continued anymore, he would've walked right into her. It was a fish lady. A mermaid? Was there really such a thing? A half fish, half human hybrid? Strange.

She stared at him with amber eyes and an eyebrow raised. She sparkled in the sunlight, glossy blue scales shone with colorful hues added to it. He took some time to study her, figure out what sort of creature she was, but before he could go any further with his thoughts, the mermaid stepped forward and rested a webbed hand upon his shoulders. It was wet, seeping into his fur in an uncomfortable way. “You lost, boy?” she stated, her voice had a strange rasp to it. Water flowed over her shoulders from her head onto him. It was strange. The water acted almost like hair. It was deep blue and frothed at the ends, turning upwards as if they were nothing, but waves at sea. It fell to her hips and quickly disappeared into mist. It took a while for the young Riolu to find the words that seemed lodged in his throat.

“Yes, ma'am.” he managed. Ryder had grown nervous over the time. Taking a good look at what sat on her hips. It was a whip. It radiated cold. He could see the ice crystals forming on the edges of it and it made him shiver. He had a hard time controlling his nervousness, so much so that the mermaid took another step forward and bent down to press her head to his.

“Don't worry. I won't hurt you. I'm not that kinda pirate.” With a smile on her lips, she murmured a few select words in his ear before rising back up. “You're safe with me.”

Ryder tilted his head and gazed up at her, realizing that she could sense his fear through his aura. He sighed, finding himself doubting this person's words yet accepting the offer he was given. “I'm Ryder. I.. I don't remember fully why I landed here or what I'm to do next.” He frowned deeply. Though somewhere deep inside, he begun to wonder how this woman could understand him. She wasn't a pokemon. How in the world... And as if reading his mind...

“Babble fish.” she simply stated, pointing to her ears. “It allows me to understand all species.” With a toothy grin, she pointed one webbed finger at herself. “I'm Qwee. Liberator of Treasure. If the rich seemed far to burden with their weight of gold, I 'liberate' them of it and spread it amongst the poor.”

The idea of a fish in ones ear seemed to be disturbing, but what more could he complain about. He was offered safety by someone who claimed to be good. Though judging by her aura, a complex mixture of colors, she was trustworthy. Though what she described to him seemed much like a crime that he disapproved of in the poke' world. “Doesn't that make you a thief?”

The look that Qwee shot him made his fur stand on end. The young Riolu grew quiet though he stood defiantly to his accusation. Her look on him seemed to soften, she could stay angry at the young and innocent. So instead she decided to explain herself. “I only take from those who over tax their people. I hit them from the high seas where they're at a disadvantage and take all their treasure.” She pressed to fingers to her heart as she smiled down at him. “I promise that I harm no one in the process.”

Ryder pointed at her whip, brows furrowed as he gave her a look of doubt. “Then why do you have that? How does someone not do no harm if they have a weapon like that?”

With another heavy sigh, she leaned down and patted his head before turning. With a simple motion of her fingers, she signaled him to follow her. “I use it to freeze people in place, but it melts quickly which is why my men have to be quick on their feet.” She had begun walking towards the direction of the clinking metal and Ryder heeded her motions, following closely behind her. “Anyways, I'm guess you'd probably want to know why we're here. Well, this is our hideout. Currently digging out our treasure trove and adding a bit more. We save some of the treasure for ourselves.... you know. To get upgrades for the ship, repair any damage to the ship, get some supplies, and for me to take care of my men.” Her voice carried pride in it. She was proud of her work, proud of her men. It left something in Ryder, a sense of longing and a sense of adventure. Is that really what he wanted?

“Can I join your crew and live here on this island with you?” Perhaps if she said yes, he'd be able to stay here with someone. Enjoy the peace with people. It's better than being alone.

Qwee turned and gave him a good, long look. Her brows pushed together in thought, lips pursed. Ryder couldn't read her emotions. It was hard and he suspected that she did this purposely. After what seemed to be hours, minutes dragged on from seconds that he's been waiting, Qwee gave him an answer. “We don't really need a new crew member at the moment.” she begun with a drawl as she said, “But, we could use the extra hand at keeping both the ship and our home base clean. Congratulations, Ryder. Welcome to the crew and your new home!”

He turned towards the light of the setting sun, it's brightly burning ball of light set the clearing before him on fire. Before him was a future. Uncertain for the moment, but it was still a future. It greeted him with cheers and a few blank stares of confusion, but for the moment he felt at peace with his decision and the world. Right now, in this time, that's all that mattered. Tomorrow was another day for the worries of the world, for the good fight. He didn't completely agree with Qwee's methods, but her reasoning was good enough for him. With his new sense of peace, he took a step into the sunlight, into his future.

Sailing

It has been a few weeks into his stay with Qwee. Ryder had learned a lot over the time. Mostly about life on ship, the rules, and what his duties will be. He had hoped for something more than just mopping, cleaning, and aiding the cook, but what could be done about it at this point? He was accustomed to the thought of being out at sea, far from the peace of mind that he's been enjoying here on this secluded island. Mostly, he found himself away from the rest of the crew, back on that lone cliff where he stood, examining his past. For now, Ryder could not remember where he came from and who he was, but he was content with the person he was becoming. Though not every moment spent on the island were moments to himself. From time to time, as he sat a meditate, a crew member would come to him. Some of the more stranger ones at time, like an octopus man by the name of Ere.

His six arms covered with the suction cups like that of an octopus's tentacles and a face ending with a short beak that clicked at the end of each sentences. Ere was the carpenter of the ship. He made sure all was well and working, keeping up the maintenance for the White Mist which was Qwee's ship. It was a smaller more versatile ship than the rest of her fleet. Where the others where the masted frigates, hers was a double masted brig. He'd catch her muttering something about rather having a schooner than a brig seeing that it was smaller, required less man power, and much quicker. Though Ryder was quite sure she was happy with The White Mist because she'd always see to it that great care is taken upon each of Ere's task upon it. If it came to it, he was sure that Qwee would paint the white hull herself and as one of his crew mates put it, “Tuck it in and kiss the ship goodnight”. It was her baby after all.

This day, he found himself sitting on her deck and admiring the craftsmanship that went into making her. The boards beneath him seemed polished and clean. Strange for a pirate vessel, but from what he experienced with Qwee that seemed normal of her. The ship creaked beneath him as the waves rocked the ship gently. Beside him sat the tools of his trade, a mop and bucket. Complete with a scrubber and a toothbrush. It wasn't the kind of duty that he thought himself doing, but nothing below the expectations that he already had. As Qwee had explained to him, “Every one of my officers and sailors started somewhere and climbed there way up to what they are now.” With a smile filled with nostalgia, she continued. “Even I, a captain of a fleet, had to begin somewhere.”

She promised him a chance to prove himself once she feels that he's ready and Ryder was eager to prove that he had what it takes to do what was right. Even though it meant thievery. He believed that in this case their actions justified the end results. Qwee had promised him that no one was harmed and that the ship leaders that follow below her each has a method of disabling the targets. His favorite method was that of a female captain who was of the same race as Qwee, she was in possession of an orb that froze time in a certain radius around the orb and it's holder. According to what she had said, the orb would freeze all but those the holder deemed as allies. It was the most harmless method he was told. Seeing as Qwee's herself was simply freezing people and allowing them to defrost over time.

In his thoughts, he didn't hear his captain creeping up on him. In fact he did not even notice her until water seeped into his fur. Shuddering and jumping to his feet, Ryder couldn't help, but shout. Whirling around to glare angrily at Qwee, he grumbled, “Why do you sneak up on me each time I am in meditation?”

With a smile on her face, Qwee replied, “There's far too many people that I am around that have been meditating as of late. Far too many for my taste really.” Qwee pressed a webbed hand to his head and ruffled his fur. “Besides, any longer and you would've missed some vital lessons.” Removing her hand from his head, she motioned behind her to the rest of her crew standing at attention. It appeared that they were waiting for him. Yet again, Ryder had completely tuned out life and found that everyone had gathered around him without his noticing.

“I.. when.. How?” his head was spinning with confusion. How long was he meditating for?

Qwee's grin quickly split apart as she threw back her head with laughter pouring out from her lips. It didn't take long for the others to join in as well. “Ah, boy, that is no good. The enemies would be upon us before you notice.” spoke Ere between hearty laughter as he leaned over to pat Ryder as well.

“Aye, that's quite enough teasing for the young boy. Weigh anchor and let us set sail.” She gestured widely to the ship before turning back to the riolu. “Now get to cleaning else I'll have you walk the plank. No sense in having a useless sack of potatoes lying about my ship.” By the smile on her face, Ryder knew that she was joking, but he picked up the mop and begun his duties with a word of complaint. She lingered for the moment as the ship left port and watched him mop until she was satisfied that he could do the task correctly. “Keep your wits about you and watch what the others are doing. We'll make a sailor out of you yet.”

Before she could walk away and slip back into her cabin to bury herself in maps, Ryder stopped her with a question. "You said that you didn't need another crew member, why am I here exactly?” he asked calmly.

The wild look in her eyes of a woman setting out on an journey of great importance seemed to have sobered up with the breath of words that left his lips. Her aura changed to that of the deep sea with faded grays and encroaching blacks. He recognized it as sorrow, immense sorrow. “We're a little short handed and Ere suggested it, said you just needed a good hands on training.” Qwee said nothing more about, she just gave him a smile and headed off to her cabin.

Her answer was simple and veiled to him. There was still much hidden for him, but it wasn't his place to prod. He did not wish to make her feel uncomfortable or to dredge up anything to harm her. Otherwise, he continued his duties mopping until one of the sailors called him over to assist with the rigs. Adjusting sails at sea was much different from having small tutorials and simple talks about them. All his training could not have fully prepared him for the real thing. The winds were strong and the ropes that he caught onto nearly tugged him up into the sails themselves. If it wasn't for the men who were with him, laughing all the while as they held him down, he was sure that that would be his fate.

When that was done, he was called out for a few more tasks. The last of them was skinning potatoes. It was hard for him to get a good grip on the knife, but after a few adjustments and some coaxing from the cook, he managed it. It was a menial task. One that he could do in his sleep once he's used to it. As several hours past, he either found solace in his task or with the occasional conversation that tend to drum up when the cook found another barrel to peel. By the time the cook had begun cooking, it was already dusk. The lanterns were lit and the noise of the crew seemed to pick up as they slowly made their way into the dining area.

It took what seemed to be half an hour for the cook to whip up a soup from all the potatoes and vegetables that they'd been cutting and peeling. It was Ryder's duty to server up the dinner to the rest of the crew. As soon as he walked into the dinning area, all conversation stopped for a moment as he set down the food on the table. Their eyes rose back up to watch him stand back, a smile on their lips and laughter slowly pouring out as conversation begun again. It didn't take long for them all to dig in and ale to be past around. Qwee motioned for him to take a seat near to her and offered him a bowl. She patted his head once more and beamed. “Goood job, boy. You have the rest of the night off.” she spoke, her mouth full of soup. Ryder flinched and found him self on the verge of scolding her when he thought better of it. Instead, he picked up a spoon and returned the grin. “Thank you, Captain for the compliment. I won't waste the time you have given me.” With that he dug in to dinner and slowly joined in with happy crew. His ears wasn't enjoy how loud the dinner was, but to see all their happy faces made it worth it. Qwee kept the ale away from him, but made sure that he had water to drink instead. After dinner, he found himself a quiet place near the aft of the ship. He sat up near the wheel and watched the stars above. He thought of the day, the lessons he learned, the experience gained, and in time he found himself falling into a deep slumber. Curling up against the rails, he fell asleep beneath the stars. A portion of him excited for whats to come in the coming days.

At First Sight

Stirring from his deep slumber, Ryder blinked his eyes clear of sleep a few times. It was dim and warm. For a moment, he was confused as he found himself sleeping on something soft and some comfortable. First he was startled; unsure of where he was. Then he was panicked, springing so quickly to his feet with fists at the ready that he knocked into a something. It felt hard, yet supple and seemed to pulsate a bit beneath him. Opening one red eye of his, he found himself lying above a girl. Her hair was blacker than any ebony stone he had seen. It made the night sky seem a dull blue. The sheen of her hair would've made the stars burnout with envy while her eyes – oh did he love her eyes- were a icy blue like that of a shallow pond. Only the clearest of spring waters could match those eyes of hers. She wore rags that did not match her fair, unscathed skin. Though unshapely and innocently childlike, he found himself speechless, hopelessly gazing into her eyes.

It was she who spoke first, patting his hand as if to comfort him. She too seem to have her breath caught in her chest though for a different reason entirely. “Are you alright, sir? I am sorry to disturb you.” Her words were spoken through her teeth as she pushed him roughly off of her. She grumbled a few curses under her breath before sidling over to where the spilled contents of his breakfast laid. Gathering up, the girl glared his way and whispered more curses in a language he did not understand. The only way he knew it was curses was by the deadly aura that seemed to repel him. That alone seemed to have caused a pain deep within his heart. He was quick to apologize then, attempting to help her pick up the mess he had created in panic.

“Please forgive me, milady.” He attempted to keep his eyes low and head bowed as his hands would occasionally slid over hers. Deep within he could feel a surge of warmth wash over him while blood rushed to his head. “I didn't - “

Ryder's words fell flat as she gave him another glare. “Soak your head in a bucket, boy. I don't need your flowery words.” He shirked back, unsure of what he had done to cross this beautiful creature nor why her words were so crude.

“M-my name is -” Before he could speak, she was already on her feet and marching as quickly as her legs could take her.

“I don't care to know who you are. You people are all the same.” With a finality to her words, the twirled around to face him one last time. Hatred burning hot in the blues of her eyes. “Cowards.” On that note, she swung open the cabin door and slammed it closed behind her, leaving the poor Riolu shaken and confused.

His heart seemed heavy as it thudded wildly in his chest. What had happened to him? His breath was still trapped in his lungs and words created a lump in his throat. Why had she reacted so violently with him? He didn't even get her name. Ryder picked himself up and walked slowly after her; lingering against the door frame, he caught hold of her scent that caught on to the door. She smelt a mix of fighting and apples. A strange combination. He lingered there until the door opened once more to reveal Qwee.

“She was always the angry sort. I don't blame her, I would be too if it was me, but I've never seen her as angry as that.” she spoke as if to herself. It took a while before her eyes lowered to meet Ryder's dream filled stare. “What have you done to the poor dear?” The question was innocent enough, but it left Ryder speechless. The only movement he could manage was a shrug. Qwee's gaze hovered over the spot where his breakfast once laid and to the mess of a bed that he rolled off of. She pressed her fingers over her tempos with eyes closed. Massaging them gently, she begun again. “She's a delicate issue that has yet to resolve and I don't want you to make it any worst...”

“A delicate issue? What do you mean? What's wrong with her?” his voice was that of panic and he quickly checked it. Ryder found nothing wrong with being concerned for another, but each time he thought of her, his heart thundered and stopped. Heat had a way of rushing to his head and sent waves of tingling sensation throughout his center. How strange...

Qwee gave him a strange look as she sized him up. It was a moment in did she finally sigh and push him towards a chair in the center of the room before seating herself in the opposing chair. Between them was a desk filled with maps, quills, and inks. Few parchments laid scatters beneath her arms as she leaned against her propped elbows. “She's off limits, Ryder. At least until either she or her brother gains some sort of sensibility...”

“What do you mean?” he ran a hand over a few of the parchments, wishing he could understand the full story.

His captain sighed heavily. “She's currently a hostage. Really, the only person that has the ability to stop her brother from terrorizing countless of villages. As much as I hate doing something as dirty as this, it keeps her brother from harming others.” She gazed down at him, hoping that he'll understand. Probably knowing that he was doubting her words right this second. Knowing that he was angry and above all knowing that he was in love. It would take a while for him to come to terms with that emotion and understand it fully, but for now she knew that that was what it was.

“So you took her from her home and family?” questioned Ryder coldly for a moment. He was accusing her to which Qwee reacted strictly to.

“Her brother was a menace and I could not allow him to harm anymore people!” she emphasized on anymore people. Her face became a low hiss as she chided him. “I took her to keep him from harming anyone else. I broke a rule of my own. No threats, no kidnapping. Nothing that any normal pirate will stoop to aside from treasure hunting, but he left me with little choice -”

He stood up then, glaring at his captain whom he respected up til now. “I do not agree with you choice. I cannot agree with your choice. Some other way perhaps, but steal a girl from her family.”

Qwee shook her head, looking guilty with brows crossed in frustration. “If I could, Ryder, I would've. I took her to keep her brother from doing anymore harm. We can't lock him up and throw away the key. He's far too strong for us.” She tried to reach over and pat his hand, but he shifted away from her.

“Too strong!? You have an ice whip!” he cried out, noting the shift in her aura. There wasn't anger, not a trace of it in fact. All there was was sorrow. It almost made him feel guilty for scolding her like this.

“And he has a fire whip...Toma would be of no use to us there. They have a medicine woman can keep a man awake for days with her herbs. We've tried the orb already. We tried everything and what we were left with was few options. Taking Averich was the last of them...”

Averich... I'll commit that name to memory thought Ryder with such fondness. His features soften for a moment after hearing her name. Enough so for Qwee to understand what was going through his mind. She grasped his hands and gently pulled them to the center of her work.

“Stay away from Averich for a while. I'm sure she will come to an understanding of what sort of man her brother is. Though for now any advances on her would only do more harm to the both of you.” Ryder looked up to her with confusion.

“I only wish to help her. Perhaps even protect her.” he replied innocently. He didn't understand what she was talking about. Advances? What did she mean...

With a sigh, Qwee slid back into her seat and rested her head back into her palms. “You're late for your duties, Ryder. The deck needs polishing and rigging needs work on. Ask the other men what needs to be done around the ship and make it quick, boy.” She didn't rise when he rose and made his way, head bowed, to the door. She stopped him for the moment with the clearing of her throat. “I'd prefer it if you sleep below deck or in my cabin. I don't want you to catch a cold.” He thought she had more to say, but nothing else left her lips. Hearing her inhale deeply and exhale as he left, he thought he could sense a bit of anxiety from her. It made him feel ashamed to have worried her, perhaps a bit more embarrassed for disobeying her. He kept the girl's name close in his thoughts, but let all other feelings go as he begun working. It took the whole day to forget her in the mess of work that the crew had given him though her name managed to stick in his mind like a fly to sap. The day was long and it ended as the day before. Except Qwee gave him the key to her cabin to sleep in, reminding him to lock it before he went to bed and hide the keys. Ryder didn't understand the warning until he found himself in that room again, face to face with Averich.

He held his breath as he twisted the handle to make sure it was locked. “Evening Milady.” he whispered, bowing his head gracefully. She scowled at him, but he ignored it. “Are you fed?”

She turned away from him, stalking to the back of the room and slipping into Qwee's chair. The room was lit only by the light of the full moon which cast a sort of glow on Averich's pale skin. She looked to be no older than he was. The aura that surrounded her seemed to glow gold with tints of red glowing furiously. Black intruded along the edges, but no further. She was still pure and innocent in a way. Her eyes seem to bore holes into him as she watched him. “Of course! Do you think Adme would starve me? Then she'll have no prisoner to keep my brother in check.” She sneered; To which Ryder found very unbecoming of a lady.

He tilted his head for a moment. “Adme?” he questioned. Unsure of whose name she just spoke of.

“Your captain, you dolt. How do you work for someone and not know their true name?” she mocked, leaning forward as she caught his gaze.

Ryder was now confused. “She gave me the name, Qwee...”

The girl seemed to lean back, almost calming her anger. “Qwee? How strange. She gave my brother the name Adme. Though he found later that even that was not her 'true name'.” Averich grinned smugly sending cold shivers through Ryder's body. She was being cruel to him, yet his heart was still soft towards her.

“I'm sure she has her reasons...” replied Ryder in a soft yet polite voice as he found himself back on the cot. He snuggled against his pillow watching Averich carefully.

“I'm sure she does as well. And my brother and I know them all.” Averich's voice was filled with poison as she lifted off the seat and slowly backed to her own corner to curl up on a cot that laid opposite of him. “Hypocrite.” She spoke it slow, sounding out each bit of the word.

He inhaled sharply. “No matter who Qwee is or what 'reasons' you speak of, I want no part of it. She sheltered me and gave me reason to be. I don't need to hear anymore of it nor do I care to hear anymore of what you have to say about the subject.” Ryder spoke kindly yet forcefully. His eyes were already drooping from sleep yet he managed to keep one eye open. “I fought for your freedom today with Qwee. I do not wish to fight with you.”

She turned away from him then and in a softer voice replied, “I didn't ask for your help.”

“I'm sorry, but I will help you whether you like it or not.” A smile tugged on a corner of Ryder's lips. “By the way, my name is Ryder.”

Rolling over, Averich eyed him carefully. She was quiet for sometime, considering a few thoughts in her mind before sighing. “Ryder, huh? Well... thanks.” It wasn't sarcasm, it wasn't poison filled. It was a simple and honest thanks given to him rather begrudgingly. She said nothing more of it and simply turned back towards the wall and slept.

Ryder chuckled softly to himself. “You're welcome, milady.” He laid facing her, watching the moonlight shadows play across the floor in time with the sway of the ship until he too fell asleep.

After The Storm
The ocean churned beneath the ship. Large waves towered high above the mast, tossed them to and fro. The winds made it hard for Ryder to lower the sails. It howled and clawed at him, the ropes in his hands, and the sails. The task was made even harder with each surge of waves. Water washed over the deck and over the crew as well, pushing them towards the rails. Ryder could feel his heart thudding heart within his chest as he struggled to right himself. He fought down the fear that grew inside him to keep from projecting them unto the other members.

Above the storm's whirlwind of sounds and the roars of the angry seas was the sound of Qwee's commands. She shouted at her crew below as she took hold of the helm. It was she who guided them through the fury of this storm. It gave Ryder a little peace to think that. It was that little peace of hearing her voice that gave him the strength he needed to do what needed to be done. His grip on the rope tightened as he added his weight to the pull. He felt several of the men catch hold of the other ropes and tugged until the sails were rolled up tight. Ryder could barely see Ere on top of the sails making sure they were tied up tight. The octopus-man was lost against the roiling sea of black clouds above. The occasional lightening that streaked across the sky would outline his hulking form. By Arceus, Ryder was glad that the man had suckers at the palm of each hands. Each of those suckers was able to hold his weight plus a little extra.

As the thunder rumbled on over head, drowning out all other sounds around him save for the roars of the sea, Ryder caught Averich in mid-escape. She had crept out of the cabin, dressed in simple furs. Her dark hair was matted down and stuck oddly to her paling cheeks. Beautiful blue eyes wide as she scanned the area before her, only stopping when she noticed that Ryder was staring back. The viking girl pressed herself against the wood of the ship, leaving the cabin door behind. She inched closer to the railing giving Ryder a death stare all the while. He shook his head and yelled at her to get back, but a wave surged up once more and washed over the deck. In a blink of an eye, she was gone. In that moment, his heart stopped.

Wide eyed himself, Ryder through himself overboard as he called out her name. His voice could never over power the storm, but his feelings easily did. Though they've only just met a few weeks ago, she was important to him. Someone that he promised to take care of and he was bound to keep it. Now battling the churning sea, he used his aura senses to find her. It was difficult at first, but he found her body barely above water. She was struggling against each large wave that battered her. Ryder quickly caught hold of her and turned to face where the ship once was only to find that he had lost sight of it. It faded into the dark of the night and in time, so did the two of them. They were lost at sea, but at least to him they were lost together. Averich didn't curse him for jumping in with her. He could have sworn she was crying between sputters and gasps. All he could do was hold her tightly to himself and hope that the worst was over. “Hold on to me and never let go.” he whispered, feeling tired from the cycle of pulls and pushes the currents were running them through. Eventually, it all went dark as they both lost consciousness.

When he awoke once more, he found himself on an island. Ryder bolted awake, gazing around him. The island was small this time. Or at least it seemed. There were no mountains, but trees galore. He scanned the beaches and found that what he was looking for was beside him the whole time. Averich laid unconscious beside him. Her hair in wild curls laid sprawled around her head as she slept. Ryder checked her pulse and was relieve that it was simply sleep. Though what concerned him was how dim her aura was. He pressed a hand against her rosy cheeks and found them to be heated. “Fever.” he whispered, as he took her up in his arms and took her further from the ocean's grasps. He felt bad for half dragging her out, but he couldn't help his own height.

Her breaths were shallow and now that he moved her, she sputtered and spat water out. The shallow and labored breaths had a new wheeze at the end as she begun to stir. “Brother?” she whimpered, attempting to pull away from Ryder's chest to see him clearer. “Am I home now, Brother? I've missed you.” She sounded different. It was a different side of her he was seeing now. She was weak and defenseless and accepting that she was. Averich before was mean spirited, strong-willed and always on the defense. He blushed as she nuzzled into his fur.

“Averich, you're dreaming.” whispered Ryder as gently as he could. He didn't wish to be the one to break her from such a happy delusion, but what must be done, must be done. He couldn't bare seeing her heart break later so why not let her know now? Either way, she would cry as she was doing now. She thrashed in his arms now.

“No! Put me down! Take me back to brother!” She cursed and screamed, clawing at any part of him that she could catch.

"Oy, I'm just trying to help.” His voice was calm as ever. Perhaps that's why she calmed down. Soft sobs were the only sounds she released.

“I'm sorry.” Those were the last two words she mustered before slipping back into the world of dreams. It was to be a long day for Ryder if this is what he's to deal with. He could only hope that the other would find the two of them soon.

He had plopped Averich at the edge of the forest line. Letting her rest on a bed of leaves and wrapping with the large frowns that he found lying around. He draped the cloak she was wearing over a makeshift line to dry in the sun as he begun to create a signal fire. Once that was finished, he found a fruit tree. One of the hard fruits that Ere loved. He believed it was called 'Coconut'. With one good kicked, he was showered with the hard fruit. He dodged them gracefully. Now with fresh fruits at hand, he set off to create a nice shelter for the both of them. Or at least for Averich. He knew well that he could get along on his own, but with the young viking in the condition she was in... it was hard to tell.

It was late afternoon by now as he begun to create a little hovel for the both of them. The hovel took him till sunset to create which also included dinner. He started a smaller fire near to the camp and curled up to Averich to keep her warm. Ryder wrapped her tightly in the newly dried as he fed her the milk of the coconut. It was all that he could do. She stirred and waked to gaze up at him.

She looked around, admiring the work he'd done while she was asleep. He really went out of his way for the both of them. “Aren't you scared?” she whispered weakly. Averich's eyes were heavy with sleep. “Afraid of dying?”

Ryder gazed down at her and shook his head. “Qwee will come for us. I know it.” He took a sip of the coconut milk before continuing. “Besides, I've been through storms like this as well.”

She swallowed and winced from the pain in her throat. “She's a hypocrite. She's not what she seems.”

“Why do you not trust Qwee? She is not a bad person. She saved me and gave me a home.” Ryder picked apart the coconut, pulling out the meat. He was fond of the memories he had attained over the time he was in her crew. He couldn't understand why Averich was so angry at Qwee.

The young viking gazed rather angrily up at the Riolu. “You understand that she was once THE scourge of the sea. People FEARED her and hated her. She sailed under her birth name then, Adme!” Though she was sick the pure rage fed her the energy she needed to sit straight and argue a point with him. To which he desperately tried to back out of.

“You are not well. Please lay back.” He pushed on her shoulders, paws pressing gently as to not hurt her in her gentle state. It only seemed to feed her anger. Averich caught hold of his wrists, digging her nails into his blue fur.

“I don't care! How dare she!? She calls my brother a brute! She's a hypocrite! A monster that kidnaps and berates!” she was growling between her teeth, tearing into Ryder's arm. He winced as he clenched his jaws and endured. It took his grunt in pain for her to loosen her grip on him. “I'm sorry... I just...”

His patience was not lost. Ryder understood pain and she was the pinnacle of it. “You miss your brother.” he continued as she patted his arm. “And you wish to go home to him.”

Gently and kind were his words, perhaps too much. Averich's eyes welled with tears as she leaned in and hugged the tiny Pokemon before her. “That and...” With a voice soft and faint with sorrow, she added, “I'm afraid that she's right.”

“Even if she was, he is still your brother. Perhaps you can change him like Qwee changed herself.” Ryder paused as he soon realized another source to Averich anger. “Is it because you wish your brother to change the way Qwee did and knowing that he would never be able to that makes you hate her so much?”

Jackpot. The tears that welled up now streamed down her cheeks as she sobbed uncontrollably. “We cannot help it! It's a way of life. A tradition that just can't let die!” The riolu did what he could to calm her down. He held her, running his hands up and down her back as he attempted to get a word in.

“Is it not possibly that you could pillage and rob the rich or perhaps the corrupted to make ends meet for your people?” He suggested.

The viking girl gaped up at him. “I...I've never thought of that.” She sniffled and coughed, clearing her lungs of the mucus that collected there as she slept. “Though convincing your brother to go for something like that...”

“Why don't you talk with Qwee about what made her change... It might give you some ideas.” He managed to wrestle her back down so that her head was resting on his lap again. “For now, please rest. You are still quite ill and I need you to get well quickly.” He paused in thought and amended his last few words. “I do not wish to lose you here to some illness. I promised to protect you.”

Averich smiled, a genuine smile. She wasn't about to out wit him or back sass him. Not a bit of cruel bitterness left in her that he could see. “I'll be better by tomorrow if you keep this up.” she would say groggily. It took no time after that for her to be lulled into a deep slumber. It wasn't long after that Ryder fell asleep, watching the stars above revolve around him with much awe. Deep in his heart, he hoped that tomorrow held a bright and beautiful day filled with a hopeful out look.

Welcoming Arms

The feral sounds that echoed beyond the safety of the camp was an indication that they were not alone. Ryder's ears perked as he twisted his head from side to side to catch the faint ripples of energy around him. From the look of things... they were surrounded. Ryder shifted Averich's head and arms around until she came to rest on the soft bushels he had collected for her. She turned as if to grasp for him in her sleep before curling into herself and grumble something softly. He patted her head and whispered, “I'm sorry.” He stepped away from the camp for a moment, watching the world around him slowly grow dim as the camp fire burnt itself out.

Ryder saw the eyes first before the bodies crept into view. By this point, he had jumped into the lowest branch of a tree. A good aerial view of the campsite. Good enough to catch little monkeys scurrying into the camp. Their eyes flickered in the light of the dying flames as they searched for what Ryder assumed was food. One so brazenly attempted to examine Averich. Ryder took a deep breath and swiftly made his way back to the ground. “Hey, “ he called out, calmly approaching Averich's side. “Please refrain from touching my dear lady.” The animal seemed to back away, intimidated by the young Riolu's boldness. “I mean no harm to you or your friends.” Kneeling beside the young viking's side, he reached down to grab a handful of bananas which he assumed the monkeys were heading for. “Here, help yourselves.” Settling back to tend the fire after deeming the monkeys mean no harm. They took to the bananas quicky, sharing amongst the lot of them. It warmed Ryder's hard to see that sight. Eventually they all settled in, curling up around the newly burning fire as Ryder began to drift back to sleep.

When the first ray of dawn peered over the horizon, Ryder begun to stir. He noted footsteps tottering away from the camp. He opened an eye and watched as the monkeys groggily drew themselves away from the camp. Drawing himself upwards though, he found himself barred in by something. Gazing down onto his chest, he found an arm wrapped tightly around him. It wasn't until the dark hair fell over him did he realize that Averich had curled around him and snuggled up to him as if he was some stuffed animal. Sighing, Ryder waited patiently in her arms and in turned watched as the sun rose.

It was beautiful. The colors of the morning, swirling into one another. Each pastel color unique and original. The sun was a ripe fruit dangling low from the swirling silvery leaves that were clouds. The ocean became a sea of light with orange and gold gleaming off it's mirror like surface. He was lost in the hues and colors, but a soft voice drew him back to the world.

“Beautiful...” whispered Averich as the human girl's grip around him slackened. She rose to her knees, drawing Ryder up with her and together the watched as the sun rose higher and higher into the sky; As each of the morning hues disappeared into the coming blue oblivion. All seemed at peace in the world and all was right.

“Feeling better?” asked Ryder, unmoving from his spot in her arms, his body feeling far too sore to move.

She nodded and smiled. “Thank you for looking after me. You're not such a bad guy.”

If a Riolu could have eyebrows, this would be the moment. He would have one raised in question as he turned to face her. “And what gave you the impression that I was a bad guy.” He spoke calmly and kindly.

Averich released him and shrugged. “I dunno, perhaps it's because you were with pirates. The 'sweet prince charming' could've just been ruse. I've seen it done before.”

Ryder sighed. “Ah, what am I going to do with you?” he said, light heartily with a grin on his face.

“Dunno. Get me off this island?”

“It seems I have a lead of what I'm going to do with you...” He pointed off to the distance towards the horizon over the seas. A fleet of ships drew near and Ryder felt Averich's body jump forward.

“They returned for us!”

“Of course they would. She would not leave any of her crew member behind.” replied Ryder.

She scoffed and said little else. It took more than several hours for the group to find them. A celebration had begun in their honor though a great majority of the party, Ryder was chastised by Qwee. Quietly and to the side.

On deck, the sun was already far beneath the sea when Qwee had decided to talk to him. The party had taken up a notch and Averich had joined into the celebration. Music was loud and blaring, but all seemed silent on deck where the only sound was the waves, wind, and the thudding of his heart. Qwee's eyes were cold and emotionless, gazing off into the distance.

“That was a fool mistake what you did there...” she muttered, bitterness heavy in her voice.

“I am sorry if I worried you...” he begun, but quickly ended when her gaze raked over him. His earlier thoughts of those eyes being emotionless were wrong. They were filled with emotions. All of which were concern, anger, and love. It was a shock to him even if though it shouldn't have been. She was like a mother to him or at least a big sister. Always there when he needed her and always providing though she was strict, she was understanding. Ryder quickly felt that an apology would never be enough. Her expression seemed to soften further to the point where he thought that tears would fall. He opened his mouth to say something, anything, but found himself buried in the scales of her chest. Water flowed over him, ebbing like the tides of the sea as she leaned in. The embrace of a mother. Something Ryder has never felt before. Her aura was like the sea they sailed on, roiling blue around him. It was soothing.

“You are precious, Ryder. To the crew and to me...Try not to be so reckless in the future?” Qwee spoke, releasing him for her tight embrace. Straightening, she seemed tall and proud. Though she chastised him for jumping ship to save Averich, she seemed proud of him. “Brave, courageous, and chivalrous...not all pirate, are you? I'd say you're quite the knight!”

“A knight?” whispered Ryder, curiosity heavy in his voice.

“Perhaps I will regale the crew with stories of knights and princess tonight?” asked Qwee as she laughed heartily. It was then that Ryder stepped forward.

“Not just yet, Captain. There is something...something we must talk about first.” His tone was serious, but he fidgeted about as if nervous. This worried Qwee.

“If it's important to you than lets talk in my cabin. Come on, Ryder.” With a hand firm on his shoulder, she gently guided him to her room, closing the door behind them to enclose a sobering talk.

Wish Making

The leaving of a panicked Charmander was quick and Ryder felt guilt deep in his heart for sending the female packing like that. He bowed his head and sighed. It could not be helped, he thought, gazing over at the group that had collected on the beach. This was worrisome. He didn't have long to worry though as a ship pulled into the bay area from the portal Qwee had set. Ryder felt at ease, knowing in his heart that they could do no harm here. It took a while for the hulking mass that was Averich's brother to climb out of the viking ship and meet Ryder's captain face to face. The waves that crashed around her hips seem to intensify with the aura that surrounded her. He's never seen her look so fierce and determined. What he saw in his captain seemed to be mirrored on Averich as her brother strolled closer. It made him feel more worried than ever. He sighed, knowing all should be fine. Qwee and Averich were not in any danger being that her second in command with that magical orb of hers was close by.

Her brother, now in the face of Qwee and towering over the two women of them. “Give me back my sister, you sea witch.” he growled, prodding the Captain's shoulder. She didn't flinch. It felt a swell of pride, but perhaps a sense of anger more so.

“Please be more respectful towards my Captain.” he voiced before feeling a harsh jab to his side from Averich.

“Shh,” she murmured, before holding tight to his paw. He could see small distorted waves of nervousness rolling of her beings. She wasn't sure if this would work.

Her brother turned to him and growled, “Keep yer mouth shut, boy. This is no concern of yours.”

This Qwee responded to. “Oh, but it is. It is. He's the keeper of your sister and he saved her life. You will deal with the two of them and I'm here to make sure you don't do anything foolish.”

“What --” The mass of muscles flexed and then released as he gazed down angrily at the small Riolu.

“It's true brother! He saved my life.” started Averich as she stepped in front of Ryder protectively. “This isn't about my kidnapping, Magnus. This is an intervention.”

“What are you --” started the angry viking, but his sister was quick to snuff his flames.

“No. It's time you listen to me. I have had enough with your ways. You need to shape up, brother. You are making more enemies than you can keep track of! You'll get hurt one day or worse. Please listen to me...”

He seemed to have froze in place, jaws slacked as he stared down at his younger sister. His beard of ebony hair was a tangled mess that his finger lightly on. The twin braids that ran down it shifted as he inhaled deeply. “Is this your words speaking through my sister's mouth, Qwee?” growled Magnus as he whirled to face Ryder's captain.

Averich caught hold of her brother's arm and yanked him back to her. Ryder squeezed her hand gently. “No, it's my mouth and my ideas. I'm trying to protect you from you, brother.” she whispered, her voice filled with pain that she held back for what Ryder assumed was a long time. “You're always protecting me...why can't I do the same for you?”

This gave him pause. A long silence fell over them and all Ryder could hear was the thudding of his own heart. This was a moment where everyone's aura was washing over the other. The world became more colorful, one lapsing over the other until he himself felt dizzy trying to comprehend the emotions that flooded the air.

He's body seemed to slack as he slowly dropped to one knee to be at eye level with Averich. “Is this truly what you wish? It will be against our codes and honor.” He rested a hand on her head and it nearly wrapped around her head. “Do you wish for a life of peace?”

She flinched before shaking her head. “No, brother. I just wish for you to be a force of justice. Pillage and steal from those who deserve it not the innocent. Please, brother? Won't it be easy to do?”

“Averich, it's not a simple change --”

“I know, brother! That's why I will be there to help you along the way...”

Ryder felt his heart drop. 'Please don't go,' he felt himself think. Why didn't he want her to go? Why did his heart feel so sick? Ryder just didn't understand.

With a heavy sigh, he conceded. “You win, dear sister. Now come, let us leave.” His eyes darted from his sister's small frame to the pokemon behind her. “And you, I have a gift for you.” Turning, Magnus motioned for a man to draw closer with a small chest in hand. “For my sister's life then here is a gift for you.”

The man opened a chest and showered Ryder with light and warmth. What was this? This light? He felt warm and fuzz as a soft voice whispered to him. “What do you wish for?”

“What,” whispered Ryder, confused.

It repeated once more. “What do you wish for, Ryder? Tell me what you want.”

The light had engulfed him by then. It was just him in a field of blinding light. “What do I want...” he fell silent, gazing around. His mind kept reaching out to Averich. He wanted to be near her for just a little longer. Ryder didn't understand why, but it's all his mind could think of. “I wish to be by Averich's side for just a little while longer.”

“Very well. Your wish is my command.” whispered the voice.

The world suddenly became black, the warmth disappearing. He could hear the voices of everyone around them. A panic in everyone's voices and anger in Qwee's. “What have you done, Magnus!? What have you done to my boy!?”

He would reach out if he could and comfort her. Nothing was wrong, but he couldn't move his body. The only thing in his view was Averich. Her form outlined by the light making her look like something heaven sent. “Ryder, Ryder. Are you alright...Ryder!”

And then all ways silently.

Tomato Kisses And A Promise For The Future

The stars gleamed above, winking knowingly at him as he stared up at them. Ryder took a moment of a breather, inhaling deeply before releasing the breath of air and the strain that was locked up within with a single deep sigh. The young Riolu was alone on the beach, confused of what had happened. The only he recalled was the concerned voices of his loved ones hovering over him. Licking his lips, he decided it was time to sit up and take in his surroundings. The salt that lingered on his lips threatened his very taste buds and in the end, he spat them out with disdain and disgust. He's never enjoyed the heavy taste of salt. It was not his favorite taste.

In the distance, he could hear the faint sound of voices and the soft crackle of fire. The voices were beyond his ears, but he could sense the slight thrum of aura near him. Familiar waves washing over him giving him a sense of peace. He smiled softly. It was the auras of Qwee and Averich. Now that he was sitting, Ryder took the time to brush the hair out of his face. He paused for a moment, hand clutching deep burgundy hair. Staring at it intently before realizing what must have happened. The stone he'd touch was a special star that granted wishes. For a moment, Ryder paused to mull over the thought of being more than just a Pokemon. More than just a Riolu. The thought made him smile. Even so much as to break the silence with laughter.

The conversation broke as the two looked up and almost instantly Ryder found himself tackled to the ground with big blue eyes staring back at him. Wet and salty droplets fell onto his cheeks seeping into the corner of his mouth. “You... You..” cried Averich as she bit her lower lip, pounding a balled fist into his chest. “You scared me. You scared me.” The rest of her words were muffled as she buried her face into his chest. Unsure of what else he could do, Ryder wrapped an arm around her waist and gently tapped her back.

“I'm here now, awake and breathing.” he murmured, trying to be reassuring. Her sobs overtook her words as the tears soaked deep into his furs. Ryder buried his face into her hair, sighing deeply before taking her musky scent. “I'm sorry. Truly am. I didn't mean to worry you.”

Between sniffles and hics, she slowly rose her gaze from his chest. Her hair was askew, long strands plastered against her cheeks with edges trapped within the corners of her lips. Her eyes were red and puffy from the tears. All Ryder could do was reach up and brush the hair from her face. He would try to smile, but found his lips weren't able to move as were the rest of his body as his heart hammered in his chest. What was this feeling? This heavy feeling in his chest where even breathing felt like a hard task to complete. He found himself lost in her gaze not noticing that they were instinctively drawing closer until her eyes closed and her lips pressed softly against his.

His heart stopped as time froze and for some odd reason all he could think is that she tasted like tomatoes. It wasn't a bad taste. He didn't mind it. In fact, he liked the taste. So much so that he's sure tomatoes will be his new favorite food. The world felt like it was moving in slow motion. Slow enough for him to feel the world rotate and the sound of a moth's wings were like the steady beat of a drum ringing in his ears. It felt like he was reliving every single good memory and triumph all at the same time. He knew if anyone were to ask him about this moment in time, he'll never be able to explain the feelings or even the moment except that it was the most beautiful thing ever.

The moment was over as she pulled away. An innocent kiss leaving both participants breathless with a smile that spoke volumes. Perhaps not as much as the magical moment before, but enough for him to realize something. He was in love. That is what this tender emotion was giving him such an adrenaline rush. She hugged him close to her once more. “I have to leave now.”[ she managed, sounding more in control now than before. Swallowing deep her forlorn feelings, Averich managed to continue on. “I don't want this to be our last good bye.”

“It doesn't have to be...” he offered, there wasn't much he could say otherwise. Ryder was still stunned.

“But it must be. I have to return to my homelands now.” She pushed herself away from, putting some distance between the two. The viking girl buried her face into her knobbly knees and sighed, wrapping her arms around her legs.

He stood then, freed from her form pressing up against him. Already, he felt somewhat empty. There were so many changes in such a short time. He smiled to himself though. Throughout all the emotional torrents that buffeted him now, he still found something to smile about. His wish came true. He had a moment more with him. For now, that split second of heaven was good enough for him. “I will --” he begun before she pressed a finger to his lips.

“Sshhh, if we don't say goodbye we can still hope and dream of seeing each other, you know? Nothing is final that way.”

He blushed, chuckling softly. “What you say is true. I will miss you though.”

“And I you, but we'll see each other when we get older, right? You'll come for me?” She held out her pinky and wiggled it. “Promise?”

He nodded, taking her pinky with his and shaking on it to seal the deal. “Promise. When we're older, I will come for you.” They embraced one last time before parting, Ryder finding his way into Qwee's quivering arms. He'd never seen the Captain in such a state. It was the closest to tears that he'd ever seen her to. The lectures he'd gotten from her all the way to the ship and back to open waters. The whole way, Ryder couldn't stop by think of one day having a garden of tomatoes where love will spring forth one day. Someday...
