Knowing that you were born…created without a soul always hit something deep inside that voiced the unspoken questions. Why was I born, what is my purpose, what am I going to have for dinner. From the moment she could understand such heavy thoughts, her parents told her all that they knew about their race. Unlike most Oblivionites, Elleth took the fact that they were created without souls well. She knew what the costs and the burden of being a living weapon entitled from the very traditions and histories of her people. All of that and more drove her to prove her worth and with it the determination to leave something of herself behind.

There was no exalted afterlife for her, her creator had seen to that by forgoing the creation of a soul for her race. The soul was an abstract idea for her that she rarely gave thought it. Thinking about it wouldn’t give her body better flexibility or quicker reaction time. Nor would it fill her belly and keep her warm at night. Elleth was no great thinker or scholar; instead she was born into a warrior clan in a very militaristic community. It was train or go hungry, get better or continue to get beaten by children half your age.

Now Elleth wasn’t some prodigy in combat nor was she very talented in things that didn’t constitute beating someone up. She simply was dedicated to her training and her family ideals. It also proved that she was beans at thinking things past the heat of the moment.

The tiny Oblivionite scowled at the dragon that towered over her, its dark eyes telling her just how stupid she was to attack it. The beasts green gem-like hide held few scuff marks from her ineffective attacks, while her own flesh was mottled with invisible bruises. One hand curled around her bare shoulder, blood dripping sluggishly over her fingers. Elleth counted herself lucky that she’d managed to survive this long with only the small amount of wounds she’d gotten. Of course her version of ‘small’ would be frowned upon by members of the other races.

A clawed hand shot out quicker than she could follow and caught her in the chest, the force of the blow flinging her back several meters. Elleth gasped for breath as she tried to control her fall, her shoulder slamming into the ground as she tried to roll, instead bouncing painfully across the forest floor. White hot pain shot up her already injured arm and black spots danced across her vision. She couldn’t hear the dragon over the ringing in her ears and absently she wondered who was stupid enough to carry such an instrument into the forest. But before the thought could complete itself, she passed out.

The forest sang with the soft humming of nightlife when Elleth awoke. At first she thought she’d been blinded when she failed to control her fall, hitting her head somewhere along the way. But once her vision adjusted itself she saw that she was surrounded by the thick roots of an ancient tree. Groggily Elleth pushed herself to her knees, swaying at the sharp pains that made themselves known. Her arms in particular nearly made her cry out. Whimpering she crawled out of the hollow that had saved her life and cautiously made her way back home, to the scolding she knew she was going to receive
