Weapon Crafting

While the Horsemen of War can summon their Clan weapon to them at any point, many take pride in mastering a variety of mundane weaponry as well, both combat and manufacture - no sense in limiting oneself to only one mode of battle, after all! Even 'decorative' weapons bear a brutal edge.

The Crafters' Den is a sheltered platform halfway up a massive pine, with all the materials one might want, other than metal. The head Crafter, a sharp-eyed older Horsewoman, carefully watches all students under her care to ensure a.) nothing goes missing and b.) nobody gets stupid. "You can have enough to make one knife," she grumbles. "And don't waste it, either!"

Can you impress her with your craftsmanship? ... Probably not. But it's worth a try.

Phase One: Weapon Creation

Create a weapon of War and test its mettle. If your craftsmanship is good, you may be victorious and gain the head Crafter's favor. For a minute or two, anyway.

In your first post, roll 3d4 to determine what your knife is made of, how well it is made, and how it is decorated.

First Dice: Material
- 1: Wood (+1 point)
- 2: Seashell (+2 points)
- 3: Bone (+3 points)
- 4: Stone (think flint or obsidian; +4 points)

Second Dice: Craftsmanship
- 1: You're in a bit of a hurry, so... (Shoddy: +1 point)
- 2: You throw something together. It looks kinda close? (Mediocre: +2 points)
- 3: You spend a bit of time on it, and come up with something okay. (Acceptable: +3 points)
- 4: You throw yourself into your work with passion, paying close attention to detail! (Awesome: +4 points)

Third Dice: Artistry
- 1: It's a knife. Does it really matter if it's pretty or not? (Ugly: +1 point)
- 2: You wrap the hilt in leather. Good enough. (Decent: +2 points)
- 3: You wrap the hilt in leather and add a feather. Pretty! (Shiny: +3 points)
- 4: You wrap the hilt in leather and add stylish strands of beads and feathering. That is one cool knife. (Stylish: +4 points)

Roleplay out your knife's creation! At the end of your post, put the specifics of your knife's creation (i.e. Shoddy Stylish Wood Knife) along with the total score (the total of your dice roll).

Phase Two: Weapon Testing

In the Clan of War, there is no such thing as a decorative blade! Even weapons destined to hang on the walls of huts are finished to battle-ready quality. You must test your knife and prove its worth, attacking the simple leathery mannequin kept in the Den for that purpose.

Take your knife's point score from the creation post. This is your knife's HP. You must now do battle until your knife breaks! The number of posts your knife survives determines the number of points you get.

To Do Battle:
Roll 2d4 in each post. The first dice indicates the number of damage your knife does to the test target (for RP flavor!). The second dice indicates the amount of damage your knife takes from the attack.

Battle ends when your knife shatters. Aw. (And yes, this means you can't take it with you. Sorry!)

You win one point if: You finish your knife (with filled-out RP) and your knife breaks on rounds one or two of testing.

You win two points if: You finish your knife (with filled-out RP) and your knife breaks on rounds three or four of testing.

You win three points if: You finish your knife (with filled-out RP) and your knife breaks on rounds five or more of testing.

The way to the Crafter's Den was straightforward enough, and West experienced none of the disorientation and confusion that he had on the Isle of Death en route to this training, despite the fact that he was traipsing about through tree canopies that were... quite far off of the ground.  He had never been much of a flier prior to attending Amityville and he was far from proficient at it now, but heights weren't really much of a worry for him.  As far as he knew, dissipation worked the same way here as it did at home.

The smirk that had quickly become his default expression since arriving on this island remained as he entered the den and took a seat, examining the materials in front of him with a less than critical eye. Honestly, he just wanted to get to the fighting.

West chose a weighty hunk of wood to start, then spent a brief amount of time shaving it down to something resembling a knife. Barely. It was closer in form to a pointy-ended club, but it would do. He spent quite a while decorating it, but he told himself that it was less because he wanted the thing to look pretty, and more because the dummy was currently occupied by another student.

He finally approached the dummy, holding the blade out in front of him as if he meant to stab downward into something, or perhaps stir a pot.  West jabbed at the motionless mannequin, leaving behind a mildly impressive dent.  It was an effective enough stance to take, but surely he could do better. At least his knife only seemed slightly worse for wear.

Stabbity stab went the boil's subpar blade once again.  This time he held it upright as he sliced viciously at the dummy.  Bits of wood flew off of the knife and onto the floor, but the thing still managed to hold it together for the moment.

West tried poking his lifeless enemy with the point of the blade this time, but the action did little to injure the dummy and almost ruined his weapon.

"s**t," he muttered.  He was suddenly reminded of Hel and Mot and their stupid weapons.  It wasn't every day that he got to use one of his own.  He'd have to be more careful if he wanted to continue fighting.

With the knowledge that his blade was on its last legs, West rushed his opponent, sinking the knife's point into the dummy's torso.  It stuck there, and when he tried to yank it out again, the hilt snapped off into his hand. He was tempted to growl and toss the thing aside, but he kept his cool under the eyes of the War clansmen around him.

Oh well.  It had been fun while it had lasted.

The demon nodded politely at the head Crafter as he left, depositing the remains of his weapon near the door on his way out.  He would be back.

The Stadium:

There is a small stadium for young War Horsemen set up away from the larger training fields, several circles set out for pairs to spar against each other in. A rather rugged looking female stands, dark skinned, light haired, covered in scars and warpaint, her hair unevenly cut in the back to a short length and ridiculously long and braided in the front, wrapped around itself, several feathers tucked into both it and the dark stained fabric, bones from several different types of creatures weaved into jewelry she wears, her wings colored like a golden eagle. On one arm, she has several slashes of paint – what looks like hundreds, trailing down it. After staring too long she finally speaks up:

“There is one for each battle I have won.” She said simply, shifting the pole she held to her other hand before turning to show her other arm, which is spotted with paint of a different color – and much more numerous. “I have one for each battle I have lost as well. To become a true warrior, you must climb your way to the top from the very bottom, and the best place to start is practicing against those who may just be better than you.” She explained, before motioning to one of the circles and an individual that was practicing on their own.

“Go join them.” She says, “If you think you’re ready. If you win, you will be paired up with the winner of another spar. So on, and so forth. After five victories, a break will be allowed for the day.” She says, the only explanation she gives as she hands off a small staff.

Mechanics

There are 5 rounds

Roll 2d8 each post
First dice is how hard you hit
Second dice is how hard the opponent hit
You want to roll higher than your NPC opponent.
If you roll a tie roll a tiebreaker between them (same as the above)

If you lose a match any matches you roll -for fun- afterwards cannot be counted towards points, but you can keep rolling spars!

Please fill in each of your posts with a small summary of how your spar went! It could be more than one hit, despite having only rolled one! Have fun with it!

The wrath demon found the stadium by accident. West had been looking for the dorms, but he had to admit that all of these trees kind of looked the same to him when he found himself surrounded by staff-wielding War horsemen instead. West had no idea what to do with a staff. He frowned at the thin piece of wood as someone shoved it into his hand, then turned the expression on the clansman of War coming toward him.

"Hey, this's bullshit, right? Whattami s'posed—"

He barely had time to duck as his young opponent's staff came whizzing toward his head. Well, he guessed one could use it like that.  West countered, his arms rattling with the impact as he brought his staff up to block, then launched his own attack. The horseman sidestepped neatly, leaving them at a temporary impasse.

He swung the staff as quickly as he could once the horseman had backed off to defend, but he was immediately countered... much more effectively than West had managed on his first try.

"Cheater," he muttered. It felt good to use his old standby taunt, especially since it no longer worked on the tatzel.

Fed up with his stupid staff, the next time the horseman lunged for him West dodged to the right, catching his opponent off guard just long enough to sweep in from the left and deliver a solid punch to the young man's unprotected ribs. As he staggered back, West swung his staff for good measure, catching the horseman in the face. He raised the stick again, but pulled his attack's power when his opponent yielded.

His next opponent was a petite ghoul with a pair of dark blue wings. She spread them wide in a way that West supposed might have been intimidating if he hadn't already been swinging his staff toward her face. She shouted and flailed as he hit her, but it was too late. The horseman fell back, head and shoulders well outside of the ring.

The horsewoman who approached him after the last ghoul's blood had been mopped off of the ring hadn't stopped talking since she had arrived. West thought that she would be disqualified or something, but no one seemed to disapprove. The demon began returning her taunts, staff forgotten.

An hour later, she had to be forcibly removed from the fight when she could no longer scream.

The next horseman that challenged him was supposed to have been some bigshot in the ring, but it seemed today he had a cold. West smacked his staff into the young man's shin and the War clansman went down without hitting West once.

The last horsewoman he fought that day was a burly specimen with smallish wings that seemed like they would barely hold her in the air were she to take off. She spun her staff in a flashy bit of intimidation that didn't faze West in the slightest, but perhaps it should have. She moved forward in a blur once they were given permission to begin, and she silently beat him into unconsciousness in a matter of minutes. It was kind of frightening.

BONUS NON-MANDATORY TASK

When you return to the class area, Radha frowns at you thoughtfully. "You do not look as if you are comfortable with your mount. Have you ridden before?" She listens to your answer, considering before slowly nodding. "Even if you are familiar, practice would not be amiss. And if you are not... then now is a good time to learn."

Radha demonstrates the basics, borrowing your mount and showing you how to make it walk forward, stop, turn, and run. They are the basic commands, but that is really all you need.

And then it becomes your turn.

BONUS TASK

This is an optional bonus task that will not earn you any horseman points.

You need to demonstrate the basics of using a mount. Please do these in a separate thread.

Hey! Listen!
- Roll 1d4. Even, your mount listens to you. Odd, it does not.

Forward:
- Roll 1d4. Even, it moves forward. Odd, it does nothing.

STOP:
- Roll 1d4. Even, it keeps moving. Odd, it stops.

Turning:
- In order to demonstrate your ability to turn, your mount will need to turn one full circle. Pick even or odd. Try to roll what you called twice in a row.
- Upon accomplishing that, call even or odd again. Then roll what you called twice in a row again.

Upon completing this bonus RP, you may now RP your mount anywhere within the War clan. Except in RPs that takes place in trees, because that is rather silly and the mounts are too big to fit in the elevators. This isn't Thunder Bluff.
