This mission can be taken on solo or with a group. You can run this mission more than once.

Equipment Pack:
- red flag set (for marking your trail)
- 1 bandage (roll 1d cool
- 1 FEAR scanner
- GPS mapping app for your cell phone (to record locations of FEAR spikes)
- 1 days worth of MRE's
- 1 pair of spare socks and an apple with a smiley face on it

Division Bonuses:

- Life hunters have extra bandage kits (trainees roll 1d12, intermediates roll 1 d20; the number of these heals is not unlimited, but rather equal to the number of people in their party)

- Death hunters need to scout ahead of the group, looking for signs of danger, avoiding it when possible, and reporting back to the group. They're skilled in avoiding damage. (trainees get 4 auto-damage instead of 5, intermediates get 3 auto-damage instead of 5)

- Sun hunters are usually a group's most effective offense force. (During a battle, a trainee is capable of two recoveries, and an intermediate is capable of three.)

- Moon hunters create the defensive line that enable groups to take on and survive powerful opponents. (trainees roll to block battle damage using 1d12, intermediates roll 1 d20)

- Mist Hunters fill the gaps as needed. (trainees can fill each role one time, in battle or in response to prompts, intermediates can fill each role twice. Both use the trainee rolls of other divisions)

Prompts: Group leader rolls 1d100.
If you have multiples of a division, they can all roll when prompted to try and thwart damage

1-20: A peaceful white landscape. Maybe a little boring, but better than certain alternatives. Careful! There's some precarious footing ahead! If you don't have a Death hunter to scout, everyone gets 5 falling damage!
Death hunters: roll 1d4, if you roll 1-3 you successfully navigate the party around an icy path. If you roll 4 everyone gets 5 falling damage.
(FEAR scanner reading: low)

21-40: There's a loud cracking sound in the distance! In the distance a large group of penguins flee the area! The ground begins to shake violently under your feet! If you don't have a moon hunter, everyone gets 5 quake damage!
Moon hunters: roll 1 d4 for every member of your party to try and protect them. For every 1 you roll, you fail to protect 1 person from damage.
(FEAR scanner reading: moderate)

41-60: You're crossing a a large stretch of ice, when someone looks down and sees something odd beneath it. Once you've passed beyond it and reached higher ground, you look back and see what resembles a massive eyes beneath the surface. It suddenly swivels to stare at your party.
(FEAR scanner reading: SPIKE)

61-80: You hear something snap behind you, and turn just in time to see the last flag you've planted get sucked underground. When you inspect where it was you see nothing but a hole going down further than your eye can follow. All of your other flags have met a similar fate. Any party without a Life or a Death hunter lose 10 hp due to getting lost.
Death & Life hunters: roll 1d4 to scout the way back or tweak your phone's mapping. If you roll a 1, you are immediately successful, no one take damage. Roll a 2 or 3, you take a little while to figure things out, everyone gets 5 dmg. Roll a 4, and you're unsuccessful, in a few hours the search crew finds you and leads you back to the base.
(FEAR scanner reading: moderate)

81-100 BOSS FIGHT!

Once again the ground beneath you shifts and buckles eventually cracking open as a massive tentacle bursts from the surface and strikes out at your party! When defeated, rather than dissipate, the tentacle slithers back underneath the surface.

Alright, calm down, things were back to normal, or as close to normal as they could be right now. Justin was fine, Eva and Otto were fine, and Julie-- Reine bit her lip, trying to push the mental image out of her mind. When they got back to the island, and yes, they would go back, she was going to spend a day baking cookies. Julie would have done that.

She'd even try to recreate the questionable frosting Julie had made, last christmas.

For now, though, it was mission time. It had been easier than expected to just follow instructions, and the sense of responsibility she had been trying to avoid since the last, horrendously failed mission, was ironically the only thing keeping her able to do anything at all. Granted, you couldn't fix a past wrong by doing this right, but maybe it was time to move on from that incident.. and just make sure it never happened again.

They trekked along the ice, Reine walking in front and staring at the fear scanner; the rest of the equipment pack she'd entrusted to Justin, figuring that he liked mats anyway, it might make him feel better. So far there was nothing of note; just a vast expanse of flat ice, dotted with penguins here and there. With a sigh she turned back to him, waiting for him to catch up.

"Think we'll find anything?"

The fear scanner spiked, but Reine didn't notice it-- the ground trembling and cracking below them, though, most certainly did not escape notice. Swiveling back to face the front, she summoned her weapon, staring at the huge tentacle emerging from beneath the ice... welp. There was the answer to her question.

But if that was just one tentacle..

Some things never changed. Like for example, Blizzard and their subtle use of anything related to snow, ice, and thrones, maybe even citadels made of ice and snow. While the penguins made for a neat and unique touch, the bleak landscape really wasn't doing much for the game.

For some reason he was still nervous, so Justin was more than happy to let Reine lead the party for now. That is of course, until she aggroed something like a pro, and simply stared at it like a pro.

Thankfully this was nothing Justin Case could not handle as he quickly summoned his weapon, exclaiming a lot "I GOT THIS", and swung his axe weapon hard right near the base of the mob - some habits were hard to change, ever.

A piece of its tentacle managed to chip off, though it also did a great job of pushing the trainee further back than attended. He grinned and sized it up - this the adrenaline of being in combat made it easier to forget everything else.

She hung back for a second, chuckling a little as he ran ahead of her and attacked. For a while it seemed almost like a real video game, as far as her limited knowledge of video games went- but it was the fact that Justin could say 'I got it', more than her actual trust in that he could handle the monster that cheered her up immensely.

Attitude was half the battle won, wasn't it? Whatever had happened just now in the Sahara, Justin appeared to have recovered. Maybe he was a cold weather type of guy.

Grinning, she ran to catch up with him, leaping up to slash at the tentacle. This would be an easy fight, but winning a battle didn't mean winning the war, and considering they had no idea how many tentacles there were... augh. Despite the deep gash in the tentacle, it lashed out at the life trainee, slapping into her side and knocking her off-balance before she could react.

Ouch.

Justin was all heroics as he ran rushing towards Reine - "I'll save you!" - and then a little past her as the antics of the boss spawn attracted his attention. He was gonna take aggro down from a fallen comrade after all, that was the idea. Reine could thank him later, after all optimal dpsing could only be done with an optimal tank.

The Mist trainee tried to get closer to at least land a blow, but as long as he had aggro, he wasn't really picky.

"You don't need to pay back the favour," Reine teased, quickly moving back up onto her feet. "Save yourself." While the monster was busy with Justin- though she didn't know how much she approved of distraction tactics- she attacked it again. They made a pretty good team, she supposed. Watching as the tentacle writhed in pain, she ducked back behind Justin momentarily, and waited for it to stop thrashing around.

"Wait what favo- ooooohh, the special raid loot." Justin made a thoughtful face, and was severely distracted as the tentacle came smacking down on him with a loud whack - that was going to leave a larger virtual welt on his ego.

He managed to throw a quick avenger's shield at the boss: unfortunately this also sent his weapon flying a little further beyond reach. The trainee kind of just stood there for a little bit, waiting for it to come back. Well, the cooldown was rather long, and it looked like he had aggro again. "You got the loot table so we can see what it drops?"

The smack wasn't the sound of another attack on the monster, but rather Reine's palm meeting her face. Just as she thought they were doing well... With a sigh, the life trainee crouched to pick Tiferet up, shoving Justin's weapon back in his hands before stepping past him, ready to land another hit.. only to slip on a patch of ice and fall.

"Uh, the loot table, uhh..." The look Reine gave him was more of confused, though it could also possibly be interpreted as sheepish. "Check the supplies bag?" As far as she knew they hadn't been given a loot table, but maybe it was somewhere in there, or maybe they'd forgotten to pick it up before leaving the tents..

Hopefully it wasn't something they really needed?

A little excited now, Justin indeed went to check his bag - sometimes he loved this guild for thinking of them so much all the time - and came out with...

Junk, useless, junk, probably some sort of low supply mat, and oh, an apple with a smiley face on it! He discarded the guild tabard flags onto the ground and tossed the apple to Reine. "What do you think? Mat or quest item?" The smiley face was throwing him off, but unfortunately still no loot table.

A thought occurred to the Mist trainee. "Oh wait, what if there is no loot table because this is a secret boss?" The excitement of having discovered a secret boss made him hit the creature twice as hard, it was nice to know his weapon finally came back to him after cooldown.

The apple was caught and looked over once quickly, clearly some hunter back at the tents was really really bored, or really really happy.

"You can keep it," she offered, tossing the apple back to him. Maybe they could make apple-flavoured popsicles or something, there was so much ice here, except it might not be clean or consumable, why was she thinking so seriously about it--

A sudden swiping movement caught her off-guard, one of the spikes on the tentacles nicking her shoulder and drawing a line of blood. With a shriek she hit out, jabbing the tip of the swordbreaker at it.

Sometimes it was so easy to forget that most games these days were in real time: one slip-up could make some serious gamers Very Upset. Justin pocketed the apple and gave the secret boss all of his attention: game face was on.

The attack from his hammer of the righteous seemed rather effective, the blow from the boss stinging, though it was just a flesh wound, really. " The Mist trainee waited on his cooldowns. "How much HP d'you think this boss has anyway, I mean if its a silver border boss it could have quite a bit right." An excited pause. "Do you think it'll drop any plate armour?" This cloth stuff made him feel like a newbie sometimes.

The tentacle lashed out at Reine again, scratching a cheek; she barely managed to fend it off, falling over in the process. Well, that was impressive, it was a good thing the tentacle didn't actually have eyes, so it probably couldn't see how much she was embarrassing herself.

Then again, a fight on ice wasn't as easy as they made it look on tv; maybe she should have thought to wear snowshoes, as ridiculous as those looked, or maybe she should have gotten boots with those spikes on the soles. Maybe that was why the monster had spikes on its tentacles, so it wouldn't slip. But wasn't it an aquatic creature...?

Overthinking again. She paused for a moment, ducking behind Justin, to regard the flailing tentacle, squinting at it. There was no silver border around it, as far as she could see, just the spikes, maybe he was referring to those, and they looked more like a pale blue.

"I dunno," Reine shrugged. "It's kind of starting to go a bit floppy, so maybe we're close?" Already it was beginning to withdraw back into the water, which Reine took as a Good Sign, unless the monster itself surfaced after that. She shoved Justin forward a little, prompting him.

"You finish it off."

Making sure he was concentrating on the monster, Reine crouched down.

Well, now that she mentioned it, the super secret rare boss spawn did seem a little green around the gills. Okay, that would have been more funny if it had gills, and last time Justin checked octopi didn't have gills, but then again maybe this was an octopus fish hybrid and now he was just putting too much thought into this.

With a triumphant sort of look, the Mist trainee ran over to the flailing limb and smacked the creature hard, determined Justin was determined to find some rare loot.

Unfortunately, the tentacle simply withdrew back into the ice after a moment of stun.

A thought suddenly occurred to him. "I think," he finally answered, thinking very very hard, "That that was only a small part of the boss." He shuffled over towards the small crater in the ground, staring at the dark water. "Do you have an underwater mount?" They could totally chase that thing underwater, it would be fun.

As Justin moved to attack the tentacle again Reine scooped up some snow, and then some more snow, packing it neatly into a spherical shape. Excellent. The tentacle wobbled a little, slipping back under the ice- even more excellent.

Instead of an answer, though- and yes, Reine had noticed quite some time ago that they were only fighting part of the monster, maybe even a very small part of the monster- Justin would get a snowball aimed at his head. Reine flashed him a grin, looking extremely pleased with herself--

-- Chasing the monster actually sounded like a pretty good idea, except she really didn't want to go underwater, it looked even colder than the ice was. Still, duty was duty, and they hadn't yet found the artifact they'd been tasked to.

"We could chase it," she suggested, walking over towards him and crouching again, sticking a finger into the water-- okay bad idea bad idea bad idea. But maybe they could fish the monster out, if they could figure out what it ate?

She shared that thought with him, looking at him questioningly.
