Artifact Search

This mission can be taken on solo or with a group. You can run this mission more than once.

Equipment Pack:
- red flag set (for marking your trail)
- 1 bandage (roll 1d cool
- 1 FEAR scanner
- GPS mapping app for your cell phone (to record locations of FEAR spikes)
- 1 days worth of MRE's
- 1 pair of spare socks and an apple with a smiley face on it

Division Bonuses:

- Life hunters have extra bandage kits (trainees roll 1d12, intermediates roll 1 d20; the number of these heals is not unlimited, but rather equal to the number of people in their party)

- Death hunters need to scout ahead of the group, looking for signs of danger, avoiding it when possible, and reporting back to the group. They're skilled in avoiding damage. (trainees get 4 auto-damage instead of 5, intermediates get 3 auto-damage instead of 5)

- Sun hunters are usually a group's most effective offense force. (During a battle, a trainee is capable of two recoveries, and an intermediate is capable of three.)

- Moon hunters create the defensive line that enable groups to take on and survive powerful opponents. (trainees roll to block battle damage using 1d12, intermediates roll 1 d20)

- Mist Hunters fill the gaps as needed. (trainees can fill each role one time, in battle or in response to prompts, intermediates can fill each role twice. Both use the trainee rolls of other divisions)

Prompts: Group leader rolls 1d100.
If you have multiples of a division, they can all roll when prompted to try and thwart damage

1-20: A peaceful white landscape. Maybe a little boring, but better than certain alternatives. Careful! There's some precarious footing ahead! If you don't have a Death hunter to scout, everyone gets 5 falling damage!
Death hunters: roll 1d4, if you roll 1-3 you successfully navigate the party around an icy path. If you roll 4 everyone gets 5 falling damage.
(FEAR scanner reading: low)

21-40: There's a loud cracking sound in the distance! In the distance a large group of penguins flee the area! The ground begins to shake violently under your feet! If you don't have a moon hunter, everyone gets 5 quake damage!
Moon hunters: roll 1 d4 for every member of your party to try and protect them. For every 1 you roll, you fail to protect 1 person from damage.
(FEAR scanner reading: moderate)

41-60: You're crossing a a large stretch of ice, when someone looks down and sees something odd beneath it. Once you've passed beyond it and reached higher ground, you look back and see what resembles a massive eyes beneath the surface. It suddenly swivels to stare at your party.
(FEAR scanner reading: SPIKE)

61-80: You hear something snap behind you, and turn just in time to see the last flag you've planted get sucked underground. When you inspect where it was you see nothing but a hole going down further than your eye can follow. All of your other flags have met a similar fate. Any party without a Life or a Death hunter lose 10 hp due to getting lost.
Death & Life hunters: roll 1d4 to scout the way back or tweak your phone's mapping. If you roll a 1, you are immediately successful, no one take damage. Roll a 2 or 3, you take a little while to figure things out, everyone gets 5 dmg. Roll a 4, and you're unsuccessful, in a few hours the search crew finds you and leads you back to the base.
(FEAR scanner reading: moderate)

81-100 BOSS FIGHT!

Once again the ground beneath you shifts and buckles eventually cracking open as a massive tentacle bursts from the surface and strikes out at your party! When defeated, rather than dissipate, the tentacle slithers back underneath the surface.

Who didn't like being sent out into the freezing cold and told to look for random s**t? Oh right probably everyone. Dr. H had pretty much said 'Oh by the way I know what you did and I don't give a ******** you'll probably die anyway'. At least that was what Marcus had inferred from the little 'speech' he gave. But to survive they needed something, and Marcus did not have to be told twice. Dis egging him on he'd sent the texts out and gotten replies back. A small team and they were set more or less.

Bundled up, Marcus was just grateful that they had warm gear to go out in. Death by hypothermia was a little less useful than dying fighting. If he had to Die he'd hope it was not in such a...pathetic way? Dis was romanticizing the way he might die and it didn't do Much except make Marcus a bit more grumpy. "So," he motioned to vast expanse of snow and ice, (and penguins). "You guys ready?"

(Party: Marcus, Clerise, Gale, Cass, and Bix)

Cass didn't like the cold much. She didn't hate it, but she didn't like it either. It was one of those indifference things. She liked it when it was an excuse to pull her feet up under the covers and ask Marcus where he'd thrown her pants off to before snuggling, but beyond that?

It wasn't really her best friend.

Still, she'd bundled up with the given opportunity to be bundled up and warm, rather content to change up her clothing after how filled with sand they had been. She didn't need to go galloping out into the tundra with a skirt on and sand in her panties. She already had to deal with the fact that battling with the skirt on had ended up with her having bug bites on her thighs which were highly uncomfortable.

What was practical clothing?

What she'd put on to wear to head out into the snow was practical clothing, that's what.

Still, looking out into the snow, she frowned.

"As ready as I'm going to be." she answered to Marcus's inquiry, adjusting her scarf around her neck and tucking her coat's hood around her ears to keep them from freezing off.

Bix was fresh out of the infirmary with bandages here and there and a deus issue sweatshirt under his coat. He hadn't worn his heavy clothes to the Sahara but he hadn't known they'd be going to the arctic either. At least his boots were warm.

The albino hunter looked distant and despite the pink of sunburn over his face, he already had circles around his eyes. It wasn't clear if they were from crying or from stress but he looked detached and not at all like himself.

He was trying to be better though. "Yeah.." He sighed, almost dramatically, but it was genuine. The hunter wrapped his braid around his neck and summoned his bow. He wouldn't be caught unawares. "Ready."

If there was one thing Gale was not paying the slightest bit of attention to, it was the cold - which was probably a good thing in the long run. But his mind was miles away, focused on things he would have rather not thought about anyway.

He tried to drag himself back to the present.

"Ah," he said, realizing that everyone else was ready to go. Face pink from the cold (and perhaps from a few other thoughts as well), Gale summoned his weapon, the rifle feeling a welcome weight in his fingers, bandaged beneath the gloves.

"I'm ready."

Clerise bounded in, looking more cheerful than she had in recent memory. More than her usual, even-- a big grin, appled cheeks, humming some catchy little tune (Party Rock Shuffle, to be precise).

"Hey guys!" She smacked Gale's back heartily, using him as an armrest. "Ready when y'all are~"

Cass, Bix, and Gale. Just like him, down and out of it. Clerise however? She was smiling and really, Marcus would take any good cheer he could get. A small smile at her arrival, pausing to look at Gale. He hoped one day he was right. Gale would get...manlier. Taller really. Because it sucked to be so short when looking for girls and- he was getting ahead of himself.

They had an Armageddon to survive first.

"As you guys know, we're off to hunt for this artifact of who the ******** knows but supposedly it will help us not die. I am all for it personally." A small chuckle. "Now let's head out. Less time idle the less our chances at being turned into penguins or something." Tightening his scarf he set the lead, getting a good distance from camp before setting the first red flag down. On and on they went, and eventually Marcus seemed to have lead them to a path that- "s**t- ********-" He hissed as he felt his foot sink on the ice and snow. It wasn't exactly the best place to be walking. "Sorry guys."

They had quite a group with them, and yet Cass was at least passingly familiar with all of them. This wouldn't be too bad, and yet Bix's lack of enthusiasm was about as infectious as the - oh god, brain. Brain. Brain, stop that. Oh ********> She smacked the side of her head to try and get the image out before she got walking after the moon hunter.

It was funny how Marcus and Cass kept thinking they'd distract each other on these missions, while right then all Cass could think was that they all needed to not die, rather than lamenting she couldn't ogle Marcus's a** through the thicker coat.

It's called survival instinct. Nicodemus said helpfully and Cass found herself frowning behind the scarf she'd wrapped around her nose and mouth even as she trudged forward behind Marcus - leading, why did it seem to appropriate for him to be leading? Then again, he was an excellent leader from her experience, so it made it easier to trust him and where it was they were headed.

At least until she slid in the snow and was nearly devoured by it, growling as she suddenly righted herself with a frown. "I think we need to take it slower here and scout out a safer travel path." she grumbled, obviously annoyed as she dug some snow out of one of her boots, rather than trying to state the obvious. The obvious wasn't helpful to her, after all.

Bix felt the ground shift. "s**t.." So much for being the light on his feet elf type.

"Gale.. you are lightest. You think you could find us a path?" he was fighting his Lord of the Rings references right now. They were a good distraction for his brain.
