That is what he thinks he remembers. In actuality, after Kris sacrificed himself in order to seal Novo away, the Goddess took it upon herself to judge him. Because of the many, many dark things he had done, the greatest of which was releasing Novo in the first place, as well as the good things, such as protecting the church from Graves, sparing the lives of the dragons that attacked him during the first battle with the Hellfire team, and sacrificing himself to undo the darkness he had brought to the world, he was given another chance, being reincarnated, with some false memories, to see what he would do with a new life.
