Artifact Search

This mission can be taken on solo or with a group. You can run this mission more than once.

Equipment Pack:
- red flag set (for marking your trail)
- 1 bandage (roll 1d cool
- 1 FEAR scanner
- GPS mapping app for your cell phone (to record locations of FEAR spikes)
- 1 days worth of MRE's
- 1 pair of spare socks and an apple with a smiley face on it

Division Bonuses:

- Life hunters have extra bandage kits (trainees roll 1d12, intermediates roll 1 d20; the number of these heals is not unlimited, but rather equal to the number of people in their party)

- Death hunters need to scout ahead of the group, looking for signs of danger, avoiding it when possible, and reporting back to the group. They're skilled in avoiding damage. (trainees get 4 auto-damage instead of 5, intermediates get 3 auto-damage instead of 5)

- Sun hunters are usually a group's most effective offense force. (During a battle, a trainee is capable of two recoveries, and an intermediate is capable of three.)

- Moon hunters create the defensive line that enable groups to take on and survive powerful opponents. (trainees roll to block battle damage using 1d12, intermediates roll 1 d20)

- Mist Hunters fill the gaps as needed. (trainees can fill each role one time, in battle or in response to prompts, intermediates can fill each role twice. Both use the trainee rolls of other divisions)

Prompts: Group leader rolls 1d100.
If you have multiples of a division, they can all roll when prompted to try and thwart damage

1-20: A peaceful white landscape. Maybe a little boring, but better than certain alternatives. Careful! There's some precarious footing ahead! If you don't have a Death hunter to scout, everyone gets 5 falling damage!
Death hunters: roll 1d4, if you roll 1-3 you successfully navigate the party around an icy path. If you roll 4 everyone gets 5 falling damage.
(FEAR scanner reading: low)

21-40: There's a loud cracking sound in the distance! In the distance a large group of penguins flee the area! The ground begins to shake violently under your feet! If you don't have a moon hunter, everyone gets 5 quake damage!
Moon hunters: roll 1 d4 for every member of your party to try and protect them. For every 1 you roll, you fail to protect 1 person from damage.
(FEAR scanner reading: moderate)

41-60: You're crossing a a large stretch of ice, when someone looks down and sees something odd beneath it. Once you've passed beyond it and reached higher ground, you look back and see what resembles a massive eyes beneath the surface. It suddenly swivels to stare at your party.
(FEAR scanner reading: SPIKE)

61-80: You hear something snap behind you, and turn just in time to see the last flag you've planted get sucked underground. When you inspect where it was you see nothing but a hole going down further than your eye can follow. All of your other flags have met a similar fate. Any party without a Life or a Death hunter lose 10 hp due to getting lost.
Death & Life hunters: roll 1d4 to scout the way back or tweak your phone's mapping. If you roll a 1, you are immediately successful, no one take damage. Roll a 2 or 3, you take a little while to figure things out, everyone gets 5 dmg. Roll a 4, and you're unsuccessful, in a few hours the search crew finds you and leads you back to the base.
(FEAR scanner reading: moderate)

81-100 BOSS FIGHT!

Once again the ground beneath you shifts and buckles eventually cracking open as a massive tentacle bursts from the surface and strikes out at your party! When defeated, rather than dissipate, the tentacle slithers back underneath the surface.

As far as Deryk was concerned, increasing chances of survival was a very. Very good thing. He didn't want to end up like Julie, or any of the other hunters who had died in the line of action. So when he heard that finding this artifact could be helpful, he was determined in trying to locate it.

Originally, he was going to try and tackle this on his own. So, he was making sure his equipment pack had everything needed. In the back of his mind, Tooley reminded him that it might be better if he had a small team. There was strength in numbers after all. And if something happened, he'd have backup.

"Right. Right. Need group. Need team. Should get others. Other divisions. Spread out specialties. Yes..." he murmured while pacing back and forth.

It seemed that there were no more people coming out of the portal, and everyone that she felt that needed to be attended to in the infirmary was. Where did that leave her now? Molly didn’t want to spend too much time with idle hands, and thus she had started to wander. Maybe she could go ask Miss Clarice for something to do…

But wait…

The Mist trainee paused as she caught sight of Deryk. “…Hey there!” She greeted, approaching the pacing young man. “…What’s wrong? Is there something I can help with?”
PostPosted: Mon Apr 09, 2012 1:32 pm

So she was right. H had been one of the survivors. Did that make Caelius the second one? There'd only been two..what did that make Allan and Aria? Had they not been Hunters until after? It raised so many questions, but none that she had time to ask. Instead she simply did as she was told.

Candace liked living, okay. She'd rather not do it alone, too.

Hmmm? Who was that over there? Candace looked over to find Deryk pacing, muttering something about needing a group. Hellooooooo Death. Oh! And a Molly! How perfect! Candace grinned as she came up behind Molly, draping her arms over the girl and forcing her to support most of her weight. "You know, Deryk..Molly and I are Mists. It'd be very beneficial to have a couple of us around to fill any gaps you can't find people for." She had worked with them both before. She knew they were perfectly capable.

Ami hefted her bag over her shoulder, struggling a little with the wait. Her FEAR scanner was out, and she was tapping the thing like there was no tomorrow. She'd never been very good with technology, but even she could tell that when the screen was blinking, it wasn't working well- or maybe that was what it was supposed to do?

She spotted a small group of hunters talking with each other and gave them an awkward wave. "Ah ... hi," she said, looking down at her FEAR scanner, and then back to the hunters, "Are any of you good with technology? It's blinking and I just cannot figure out why!" Stupid thing.

And just like that, a few girls had wandered on by. Nice! Deryk turned towards Molly, nodding rapidly.

"Yes! Actually. Thinking of going after the artifact. Need a team. Wanna join? Oh! Candace. Yes. Yes yes. Good plan. Must branch out. Get specialties. Good start. Lets see who else..."

The trainee paced to and fro a little more, before he heard an unfamiliar voice from nearby. He didn't really know her, but hey! She was a moon hunter. That was something they didn't have yet. Perhaps they could wrangle her in.

"Hi! And yes. Very good with tech I am. Fear scanner. It picks up on fear creatures nearby. More beeps is more trouble. Right now its fine. Nothing around here. We're going on a mission. Come with? Yes? Yes. You're coming."

Deryk seemed pretty set on this. It was for the sake of survival after all. That, and it took his mind off of the horrible images that had been haunting him at first.

"Everyone got an equipment pack? Everyone ready?"

Oooh yes…Molly recalled that small lectur—“Oop!” She swayed a bit as there were arms around her, and then righted herself so that she could support Candace, placing her hands affectionately on the older woman’s arms. She grinned a bit. “Hi Miss Candace!”

She then nodded her head vigorously. “Yes, I would need a team!” She beamed brightly. “This will be like Alaska again, huh?” She recalled fondly, and then looked over at Ami as she approached. “Hello there!” For the sake of moving things along, Molly already magically had a pack and was ready to go. “I’m ready!” She announced, nodding her head vigorously once more. Anything to help them out and anything to keep her mind from wandering to past events.

"Hello again, Molly dear." Candace crooned, giving her a kiss against her temple.

Okay, she liked Deryk before. He was amusing. Right now? He was even funnier. He wasn't taking no for a ******** answer, and his short phrases were funny as hell. Yes. Come with. Bahaha! Candace gave Molly an affectionate squeeze before letting the other trainee go, playfully ruffling her hair before she put on the gloves Clarice had made for her. Ah, Clarice. You're amazing.

Sighing happily, Candace clenched and relaxed her fists in the gloves a few times, smiling down at them. She wanted to thank Clarice in person...it'd have to wait until after. "Well Alaska went so well, I don't see why not." She grinned at Deryk when he asked if they were ready.

"I'm always ready, Mister Bond." She gave the newcomer a wave, gesturing to Deryk. "A good Death right there. Nice to meet you, don't think I've worked with you before...and it seems Deryk's not letting you leave." He's like a pokemon trainer or something. They made eye contact, they're not letting you go.

Ami was bewildered. She'd only needed a little assistance with her scanner, and now suddenly she was part of the gang? It was a little weird, to be honest. Ami looked away for a moment, trying to think of a way to escape. Instead, she saw the tundra layed out in front of her. It would be sad to die all alone in the snow. What if no one found her?

On second thought, a group sounded ******** great.

"Ah ... yeah. Looks like we're headed the same way anyways," she said, gesturing to their matching backpacks. Then she held the scanner out to Deryk and said, "Think you could fix it and walk at the same time?" His speech was a little bizarre, but if he was willing to help, who was she to put him down?

"Oh!" she said, almost as an after thought, "I'm Ami by the way."

"Yes! Like Alaska. That mission went well. Very well. Let's hope this one goes well too? Yes," Deryk nodded while grinning to the two mist girls. It was also good to hear that they were all set. His attention then turned to the moon girl, who he seemed to have bewildered a bit. Ah it was all well.

"Sure! Shouldn't be too hard I think. Oh. Name's Bond. Deryk Bond. Pleasure to meet you Ami," he said before taking the fear scanner to fiddle with it a bit. As he did so, he began to walk away from the camp.

"Let's go this way. Hope we find something."

While they were walking, he continued to mess with the fear scanner. It was hard to say what was wrong with it exactly. Though.. after some time, the scanner started to go crazy. For a moment, he thought it might have been broken but then... he noticed something strange below, past the scanner, and past the ice.

"... IthinkyourscannerisworkingjustfineAmi..." he said while passing it back, "Letskeepmoving. Yes? yes."

It’s nice to meet you, Ami! My name is Molly!” The Mist trainee chirped, and once they all seemed to agree and be packed, she followed on out after them all, bringing up the rear of their team. It helped to be in the back when her weapon was as large as it was.

Molly kept her eye between her FEAR scanner and the ground, watching where she was stepping. She’d pause at times when she thought she’d see something underneath the ice. Maybe it was just the light playing tricks on her though? As they climbed higher, Molly paused, her brows furrowing. “…G..guys? Are your FEAR scanners spiking too?” She bit her lip, and looked around, pausing as she looked back at where they had just come from.

“….W…what is that?”
PostPosted: Mon Apr 09, 2012 2:47 pm

"Nice to meet you, Ami. I'm Candace." She introduced herself cheerfully before gesturing for them to follow Deryk out of the tent.

Candace wasn't as used to FEAR scanners as she'd like to be. This was only her second time ever wearing one. At least it wasn't big and bulky or anything, just something on her wrist. And damn was she glad she had her clothes back of she'd be freezing. That stretch of ice looked very...dangerous, but she followed anyway.

Then her scanner started to go crazy, as did Molly's and Deryk's and Ami's. s**t. Candace looked down and around until she saw it, the thing below them.

Oh ******** that was an eye!

"Keep going. Now." Candace urged them, maing shooing motions with her hands and even giving them a physical nudge if they needed one. "We're here to find and retrieve and artifact, not fight giant ********' eyeballs."

Ami nodded at each of their introductions and then followed the group right beside Deryk, at the front, so she could get a better spot for protecting them from dangers.

Thus as soon as Deryk saw the eyes, so did she. Her scanner went crazy and she took it from Deryk's offering hands. "Yeah, that doesn't look like a pearl to me- let's go." Nevermind that that thing looked like it could eat them for breakfast. She just didn't like the idea of having something watching her from under the ice, just lurking there. Waiting.

No thank you.

< What? Sea creatures are actually pretty nice you know. I used to know this- >

I don't care about your fish friends back home, Aquaman, she commented harshly. Junpei shut up at that one.

"Yes. Let's avoid giant monsters of doom if possible. Best for survival if we do," Deryk agreed while hurrying on along, trying to be careful with his footing.

((A peaceful white landscape. Maybe a little boring, but better than certain alternatives. Careful! There's some precarious footing ahead!))

As they moved on along, Deryk looked around as they came across a large, peaceful white landscape. It was actually kind of nice. If it weren't for the fact that danger could be lurking beneath the snow somehow. Actually, he had a bad feeling about this. The scanner levels had dropped, but something didn't seem right still.

"..Hold on guys. Lemme go out ahead," he said.

The death trainee took a few moments to move on around, poking at some areas in the snow. It looked like the terrain wasn't very level as some parts had sudden dips in it.

"Follow my footsteps! Should be safe path. Don't stray. Might get hurt. Sudden drops in the ground. Don't fall," he warned the rest while waving them on over.
