How the Character is Involved in the Story

Villain? etc): Scene where character first appears: Relationships with other characters: Where, how and when did s/he first interact with other characters: What was this character's life like before something, if anything, happened to change it all: How Character is different at the end of the novel from when the novel began: Background Story: Additional Notes on This Character:
Notes on creating effective characters
Motivation: When considering a character, always ask yourself 'why'? Question your character's motive for everything they do, think, or say. Delve into the psychology of your character. Don't just make them 'insane' for no reason, or 'just always happy,' or anything that can't have backup. Every thing has a reason, and this should be relatively obvious to your readers, unless you mean to keep it a secret; but a good, solid character has depth. One creates depth through a deep understanding of their character's past, psychology, and motives. For instance, it doesn't make sense for a female character in a sexist society, to "just suddenly have the will to rebel." No, rebellion comes from a catalyst, an instigator, something has to happen for this character to want to rebel; afterall, if you've built that society to generally accept sexist ideals, what would make this female character different from the others? What happened in her childhood to make her think otherwise? How did her father treat her that may have inspired this desire to break the norm? How about her mother? Was there a role model, tv show, event, etc, that inspired this character to break the mold? People never do anything without reason, be it conscious or subconscious, and as a writer, it is your job to write their history and motivations.
Stick to what you know: It's hard to have a deep understanding for your character, if they have no basis in reality. It doesn't mean you can't have superheroes or fantasy elements, but their traits and personality must still realistic and believable within that realm of reality. Even in an alternate universe, there is a state of consistency. Lack of consistency creates an unbalance and a poor foundation for your character, and they will be loose and shallow to the reader. A reader connects with a character when they can sympathize, or feel an emotion from them. Keep at least that much realistic in anything you do. In order to understand your character, you have to understand, or research them. Do you know enough about the period in which they were born, or their habitat? Do you know anything about their demographic, their race, their age? All of these things you must familiarize yourself with in reality before you attempt to recreate it in your story. It is the same with an artist; an artist can not learn to exaggerate reality before they learn to replicate it, at least to some extent. Therefore, you must truly know your characters inside and out, and practically live them. These above mentioned traits only come from putting yourself in your character's shoes. "If I were him/her, how WOULD I wake up in the morning? What would be my daily rituals? What would I order if I were them, at a restaurant?" Think about your characters all the time, even when you're waiting on a bus, or standing in line, constantly ask yourself "what would my character do in this situation?" This is how you can come up with truly unique character traits, that are both believable AND relatable. Draw from people you know, situations you've been in, or even yourself (but don't be one of those writers who just writes their fantasy self into everything they do).
Clichés, Stereotypes, and Archetypes: Clichés are not the same as archetypes or stereotypes, mind you, and to some extent these things are necessary for a story, however a cliché should never be used as an important story element. That being said, this does not mean that all clichés are bad. You can have a cliché storyline, but a diverse range of characters with depth and personality interesting enough to keep your reader into what you're writing. Cliché characters may run the risk of becoming flat and undeveloped if they are not subject to change. If you do not move beyond it, they will remain stagnant, and thus hinder the potential of your story. Avoid them when you can, and work around them when you have them. What is the difference, you ask? In my personal opinion, archetypes are 'genres' of stories or characters, a very basic and general 'theme.' These are hard to avoid. Archetypes of stories could include: love triangles, the classic Romeo and Juliet fate, jealousy, etc. Archetypes of character may include: the stubborn king, the blinded-by-love youth, the whore or even beast/monster with a heart of gold, the corrupt official, etc. These are things in which you base your story on, but build off of. Stereotypes are only acceptable in moderation. You have to make a character believable. Certain fashions, dialects, and generally accepted truths about a stereotyped character might be necessary to get your point across. This is especially helpful for minor characters. Let's say you have a bartender, who is in only one or two scenes. He needs no real development, as he only acts as a prop for your main characters to interact with. It's okay to go with a stereotype or cliché. If you start going to the extreme opposite, and try to create the 'super unique, most original awesome character ever,' or as I like to call it, the 'anti-stereotype,' you run the risk of 'obviously trying too hard,' which will come off to your reader as amateur. If he's only a minor character, or someone in passing, don't make the bartender "a midget, old woman with a beard, who's lesbian for no reason, has wings, and speaks backwards in French." It doesn't make sense, and is completely unnecessary for a minor character. It is, therefore, unbelievable and leaves the reader questioning "why did they even bother?" Don't try too hard to create something no one has ever seen, because you'll inevitably fail. It doesn't mean that you can't create something original. Originality comes from making the particular character just unique enough from the others to stand out, however many aspects of this character probably have their inspirations from other sources. Don't be afraid of that, but at the same time, don't let your inspirations be all you draw from.
Conclusion: Most of all, keep practicing. Writing is like an art, no one is perfect the first time they start. No one creates masterpieces with their first works. Don't bank all your money on one story, or one character. Continue to create, because you never know which one might be the big hit. Even when you have created something people like, don't stop there. A true artist or writer is never pleased with their work. Continue to aspire to create more, create something new, and most of all, let your love of the hobby inspire you to never stop.

Although this character profile is extremely in depth I feel that people could become too sidetracked with completing the profile and never get around to writing about the character. May I suggest the character profile I use? I've taken pieces from different roleplaying profiles to regular character profiles I've found around the web.

Character Questionnaire
[Written in 3rd person]
• What is your character’s name? Does the character have a nickname?
Dawn. No nicknames (it's kind of a one-syllable name...)
• What is your character’s hair color? Eye color? Both are dark brown, a smooth deep brown.
• What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have? She has big eyes, white light-tanned skin, thin face.
• Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did she get them? No birthmark, but she has bruises and scars along her arms, legs and torso.
• Who are your character’s friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does she wish he were closest to? Parents, adoptive sister Belinda. Extended family may include Belinda's sisters, Brenda, Jessica, Julia and Brianna. She surrounds herself with Brenda, and to a limit, others is led to trust, such as Luke, Orion and Brianna. She's close to Brenda, but wishes she was closer to Orion.
• Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home? Two-storey house hidden in the mountains, born and raised. She calls the forest home, or Brenda's house.
• Where does your character go when he’s angry? Sometimes hunting. Sometimes looking for trouble. Occasionally, to Brenda.
• What is her biggest fear? Who has she told this to? Who would she never tell this to? Why? Her biggest fear is being powerless to stop anyone to harm someone she loves, like her sisters. She has told Brenda and Brianna. She would never tell Alex, because he would take advantage of her weakness.
• Does she have a secret? She doesn't like people to know she and her sister were raped. She also doesn't share her weaknesses lightly.
• What makes your character laugh out loud? People doing stupid stuff (especially who she hates).
• When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart? Can't say she's ever been in love, but she did grow up with a broken heart being unloved by her parents.
Then dig deeper by asking more unconventional questions:
• What is in your character’s refrigerator right now? On her bedroom floor? On her nightstand? In her garbage can? Fridge; rabbit, other hunted meals, food scraps. But to be fair, her house is abandoned now, so... Bedroom floor; clothes. Nightstand; dirty cleaning rag, more clothes... Garbage; thrown-out cleaning stuff, ripped bottle wrappers off her dad's beer that she's played with, loose thread off her clothes...
• Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Does she wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother? Boots and socks, worn with years of use.
• When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her? It smells of raw meat. This smell resonates with her because she didn't understand where all the other people were when the house was built by other people, and she wanted to know why she had to be isolated from people.
• Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for her to throw out? What is difficult for her to part with? Why? She has difficulty parting with old clothes, because she hardly get many to start with, and she hates to let them be wasted therefore. Anything of her sister's too, especially books. She may be illiterate, but that doesn't change the fact that she always wanted to try thanks to Belinda. She wouldn't bat an eye and tossing everything her parents own, though.
• It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If he’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If she’s stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on? Locked in a pitch dark room, sleeping away from the sun, as she is a vampire. No simply closed blinds; there needs to be no cracks at all. Alternately, at midnight, she is found walking through town. She doesn't have any money, but she likes to take advantage that town she never had before, and wants to see everything and find everyone. She wants to know who built her house.
• What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting? When she tried to run away, and she was caught after fifteen minutes. She was punished harshly and cried for hours. It was lasting because before then, she'd always thought she could if she wanted to, even bragged to her sister about it.
• Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is she going? What does she wear? Who will she be with? She is with Brenda. She wears borrowed t-shirt, jeans and dress shoes. She is going to a restaurant (Brenda's paying), then a movie or the park.
Character Questionnaire 2
[Answer in first person—as the character]
• What do you consider your greatest achievement? Despite the horrible consequence, escaping my parents. Whether it was that night or not, it had to happen. Despite how depressed Belinda's death made me, I still free proud and free, and I'm certain she would be proud of me.
• What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being free, and having the crimes against me and her lifted from my chest. Not feeling so defeated and undignified; being treated with respect. Making them pay.
• What is your current state of mind? I feel powerful! Got that b*****d Alex under my thumb. Now for the other two... at this rate, it can't be far off...
• What is your favorite occupation? Give me a break, I only discovered there really were other people about a week or two ago! Just not the cops.
• What is your most treasured possession? Well, I no longer have it since I left everything behind at that hell house, but it was a learn-to-read book from when my sister was young.
• What or who is the greatest love of your life? My sister. But not in a romantic way. Ew.
• What is your favorite journey? The physical one, discovering my world. I did this heaps even before I found people, and I enjoyed all senses.
• What is your most marked characteristic? People think it's my bitterness, but that's bullshit. Personally, my most marked trait is definitely my pride. A far more positive trait, don't you think?
• When and where were you the happiest? Running down that hill. Before they found me.
• What is it that you most dislike? Abusive shits who don't respect anyone.

If I were honest, though, Luke has such a cool head on his shoulder and such solid ideals when while he's only human, and I respect that. In some ways, jealous; I'm too lost in the dark to follow his lead, but he's strong for a human.
• Which living person do you most admire? Luke.
• What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Patience.
• On what occasions do you lie? When I truly need to, in order to survive, or in order to help me achieve my happiness.
