Nothing felt the same anymore. It hadn't for ages. It felt like everything had been stolen from him that cold winter day. His great grandparents, his father and his sister? Dead. The herd? In disarray. His spirit? Crushed. He'd done something useful for once in his life and in the end it turned out he hadn't been useful enough.
Things had recovered since that dreadful day and stabilized somewhat but the effects could still be seen and felt. Vivace stood in the clearing where he used to play with Essence. There was no sign of her now though. She had vanished like the wind and it had been years since he had seen her. It hadn't done much to improve his spirit.
He sighed looking out over the empty area. He used to sing here with his friend. Thinking about it filled him with a familiar urge that had been with him since birth. He took a deep breath.
"Into the night, desperate and broken. The sound of a fight. Father has spoken." The words and emotion weren't the same as normal. The lyrics and tune came from somewhere darker than normal but he sang them all the same. "We were the kings and queens of promise! We were the victims of ourselves. . ." On and on he sang until the desire left him standing there feeling worse than he had before.

Clea wasn't sure what to make of the challenge she had been presented with just yesterday. She was supposed to find a piece of ice that never melted and bring it back and she wasn't supposed to come back until she had it. Was it all in her head or did these tasks seem to be getting more and more impossible? Where did she even start with this one? Ice that didn't melt? That sounded like a riddle. Was Dark referencing some fabled jewel? Was that what he wanted her to find?
She sighed and slowly wove her way along the forest trail. Her head hung low and her tail dragged across the ground. She admired Dark more than anyone else but he had some of the strangest teaching methods she had ever encountered. It would all be worth it in the end, she just had to keep telling herself that. In the end she would be a master thief with the world in her control.
She opened her mouth to encourage herself but as she did the sound of someone else's voice reached her ears. Clea blinked and straightened up. Someone was singing? It was pretty. Forgetting about her troubles she trotted off the path and into the brush to find whoever owned such a marvelous voice. They needed to be praised.

Life wasn't permanent. His family had completed their journey in this world and moved on to the next. As Vivace stood staring up at the blue blue sky he reflected on this hoping to find comfort in this wisdom this time. Blue like his father, his great grandfather, his sister's wings and his great grandmother's legs. Blue like Vivace. The knowledge did not ease his mind much but he found that it was helping more and more these days when he looked to the clear sky and thought of them. Their bodies were gone, their souls had moved on but looking at the sky it felt like they were still out there somewhere, together.
"I miss you..." Vivace said quietly to the wind taking in a deep breath. There was no response and there would never be a response. Not in the way he needed it. He took in another breath, deeper this time and then another. Before he realized it his breaths were becoming shaky and his vision blurred with wetness. It didn't take long for the tears to start falling and he was glad Essence wasn't here. She was used to this great happy-go-lucky stallion that wasn't to be found today. She shouldn't see him like this, it would break her heart just like it would break the hearts of his family.

Clea had not yet found the owner of the voice when it stopped singing. She froze where she stood half over a bush she was trying to get over. Her face fell as she looked down at the bush. "Now what?" She asked it as though it might have an answer before shaking her head for being silly and clambering over it. She was pretty far away from the path she had been on which meant that now she was effectively lost. She huffed and blew her bangs out of her face.
"Oh well, guess I'll just keep going this way." She said before trotting off in the direction she had been heading hoping to get lucky and see the stallion.
After only a few more minutes of traveling she came across a clearing in the trees and grinned to see the back of a winged stallion staring up at the sky. Was this him? The singer? Her tail twitched excitedly as she moved around the outside of the clearing to get in front of him before speaking.
"Hey!" She called cheerfully. "Are you the one that was...hey are you crying?" He wasn't looking at her but she could see the wet patches on his cheeks. She'd never seen one of their kind cry before. She hadn't even thought it was possible until now. "Are you okay?"

Vivace jumped slightly as something called to him from out of the trees, something that sounded remarkably like an overgrown squirrel. It didn't take him long to figure out that the rather chipper and squeaky voice belonged to a mare. Really it took him about as long as it had taken her to notice his tears. His voice caught in his throat leaving him standing their stupidly staring at the mare. She was a uni mare that had a strange mane that grew in all different lengths at the front and surprisingly clear eyes. He'd expected them to be green or purple like the accessories she wore but no, they were blue like the sea shallows.
Finding that he had been staring long enough he cleared his throat and shook his head hoping to clear away the tears. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." He answered finally. Vivace didn't want to trouble her with his problems. She seemed a happy sort like he used to be. She deserved to remain happy as long as she could. "I was just thinking." That was as much of the truth that he would bug her with. "I'm sorry, where are my manners, I'm Vivace." He said hoping to change the subject.

Her heart about burst from pure joy when he jumped. She had surprised him. She had honest to goodness finally surprised someone. Sure he had been a bit distracted at the time but she had done it. As she gazed upon him with nothing but happiness she realized he still wasn't saying anything. He was just looking at her. Had she scared him that badly? Should she be happy or concerned about that?
When he finally spoke she let out a sigh of relief. Good, the shock had only been temporary. She'd have to be more careful about who she startled in the future. Clea didn't want to accidentally kill someone.
"I'm Clea!" She declared boldly standing up straight and proud with her chest puffed out slightly. Then completely missing the fact that he was trying to change the subject she asked, "What were you thinking about? Sad things?" It was probably sad things because most people didn't cry when they were happy unless they were extremely happy and he just didn't look happy.

Vivace sighed as quietly and discretely as he could manage. So much for changing the subject. This kid, and he was pretty sure she couldn't be any older than three or four, was either completely oblivious or completely nosy. "Yes, Clea, sad things." He replied trying to keep the annoyance he was feeling out of his voice. What else could he be thinking about? No one cried alone unless they were very sad or had something caught in their eye.
"It's okay now, though." He continued once again trying to change the subject. "So, what brings you out this way? Do you live around here?" Please, please let her have a lot to say about either of those, he prayed. Something was telling him that he wasn't about to get off that easy though.

Clea nodded her head when Vivace confirmed her suspicions. Sad things. That was too bad. He seemed like such a nice fellow, he deserved to have a smile on his face. She beamed at him when he started asking more questions. "No, I live way over there." She said nodding off to the east. "I'm out here looking for something fantastic but that can wait." Clea was practically chirping as she spoke.
"You know, when things get sad, thinking about them doesn't make them better." She offered moving herself to stand directly at his side. It was easier to be comforting like this. "Just makes them worse. You wanna know what makes them better?" She asked tilting her head slightly to peer up at him. He had some interesting flecks on him, they sparkled in the sun like crystals. They were pretty but she couldn't let them distract her right now. "Moving on. That makes them better. You just keep going forward and then one day you'll see things aren't so bad."

Vivace found himself staring at the girl once again as she shuffled over to stand right next to him all in order to give him life advice. This was a joke right? A slightly forced smile tugged at his lips until he realized that she was completely serious. She honestly wanted him to move on with his life like it was that easy. He met her eyes for a moment and just shook his head .
"It's not that simple." He said moving past her to make the long walk home. He didn't feel like flying right now. "I just lost a lot of my family." He added since she seemed so keen on the subject. If she was going to try giving him silly advice, even silly advice that made some sense, she should know full well what was going on. Move on. She wanted him to move on from his family? That wouldn't be happening.

"Oh." Clea's face fell as she found herself at a sudden loss for words. Even she couldn't dismiss a confession like that so easily. She continued to look on at the blue stallion in quiet contemplation. It couldn't be easy to lose family and Clea recognized that something like that would leave deep holes in his heart that nothing could ever fill properly. If any of her sisters or aunts or uncles or grandparents or anyone ever passed away she knew that she would have a hard time recovering.
"You know..." She said slowly lowering her head to look out into the forest watching the leaves move about in the wind. "You don't have to forget them to move on. You shouldn't forget them really. They're part of you, aren't they?" She spoke casually with a bit of a smile but this was not her usual over-the-top bubbly nature. Bouncing around and telling him serious things didn't seem like it would go over well so Clea had settled for a more toned down approach. There was no reason to make him think she was a complete lunatic.
"But, you really should move on with your life, you know? Staying stuck in one place all sad and stuff isn't good for you, you know?" She looked at his retreating back offering an encouraging smile that he probably wouldn't see. "You have a really pretty voice...don'tcha think...they'd be happy to hear you sing? I know it would make me happy. It's gotta get boring wherever you go when you die. Why else would the spirits keep watch like they do?"

Her words stopped him dead in his tracks. How in the world could a mare that seemed to have such an empty head make so much sense? There was something completely backwards about the situation. He was used to people offering condolences to him and his family. There had been an entire day when he had to listen to almost perfect strangers tell everyone how sad they felt like they understood. That was usually all strangers could say, 'I'm sorry for your loss' before standing around awkwardly hoping for a change to the subject.
This mare wasn't acting in the typical fashion. Instead of backing away from the topic nervously she was digging into it like a mole. Vivace sighed and shook his head before turning to peer at the tan mare over his shoulder. "Do you think it's easy? To move on?" He asked her trying to work out everything that she had been saying to him. "No, don't answer that." He added as quickly as he could not really wanting to hear her thoughts on that matter. They would probably only confuse him.
Vivace turned himself around fully to face Clea, she thought his family was bored? That was a strange take on things. At peace, maybe, apparently his father had smiled before passing on, but bored? If the spirits looked on it was to serve as guides if anything. He doubted it was out of boredom. He shook his head and then fixed her with a perplexed look. "You really think they're bored?" He asked the disbelief obvious in his voice.

Clea had been opening her mouth to answer when he told her not to and she shut it with a resounding snap. He asked questions that he didn't want answers to, just like Dark. That wouldn't stop her from answering in her own mind though. She didn't think it would be easy but wasn't that the point? If it was easy to forget someone then didn't that mean you never cared for them to begin with?
She studied Vivace carefully wondering what was going through his head. For such a beautiful voice he really didn't seem to use it much. She smiled when he turned about and that smile grew in size at his question. "I do!" She chirped striding forward still finding that close quarters were better for conversing. "Wouldn't you be if you found out you couldn't really do everything that you used to do? It's gotta take a lot of time to get used to being a spirit. I mean, think about, you wouldn't even have legs anymore. Or need to eat." She came to a stop once she had maneuvered herself back to Vivace's side.
"As a new spirit I think you wouldn't be used to the normal ways spirits pass the time so you'd look for something more familiar. Family's familiar so...yep, that's why I think they watch us. It makes sense when you think about it. So...really we should be doing our best to make them happy."

After a prolonged silence Vivace slowly shook his head with a trace of a smile on his lips. Her reasons were probably the strangest he had ever heard but they held some fragment of sense. They didn't match what he believed, really he doubted that anyone else felt the same as she did, but he imagined that her kind of thinking was what allowed her to remain so cheerful. They were bored so entertain them. Make them happy. All his family ever told him was that they were at peace now. That meant they were already happy.
Vivace sighed. Was he being that much of a downer that someone else needed to step in to help him handle his grief? He raised an eyebrow as he glanced sideways at the unicorn. Perhaps he did need someone. Perhaps this was meant to happen. Maybe she was supposed to help him through this, a perfect stranger. He raised his eyes to look at the sky wondering idly if this was somehow his father's doing. At peace or not maybe his family really was looking at for him still.
A lump began to form in his throat and he coughed quietly to clear it before turning to face the mare properly. "Have...have you ever lost someone?" He asked a bit curious as to what had put these beliefs in her head.

"I don't know." Clea replied casually. "Maybe." She flicked her tail and would have left the answer at that if it hadn't been such a confusing reply. "It's uh...complicated you know?" She tilted her head to one side and pursed her lips trying to think of a way to explain her particular situation without making Vivace feel worse.
"See...my dad? I don't know him. My mom didn't really know him either...but...I've never seen him. He never came to see me or my sister, you know?" Clea looked off into the distance as she spoke. It felt strange saying all of this. Most of the time nobody asked her. It wasn't exactly uncommon to see mare's with fatherless children running around. "He might be dead is what I'm saying...but I just don't know." She refocused her eyes on Vivace. Clea almost hoped that he was dead, then she wouldn't have to think that she had ever been unwanted.
"It's okay though! The rest of my family loves me and I love them and we're all still there for each other. And now I have Dark too and, well, I don't think he likes me that much because I'm useless but I like him and he teaches me a lot!" She grinned at the winged stallion as she spoke faster than she ever had before.
