He had managed to get far enough away from Eva that he figured she wouldn't find him - and he hoped she wouldn't, as much as he wanted to see her. Right now was not the time.

Right now, in fact, was the last moment he wanted her to see him.

He made it to a small, quiet spot sequestered away between two of the currently unoccupied tents before he stopped walking, his pace slowing until he was no longer moving. The he stood there silently, as though he did not know where he was, staring into nothingness, his hair falling over his face in short golden sheets. For the first time since cutting it, he wished he hadn't - if it was long, he could have maybe hid the embarrassing red that was spread scarlet his cheeks and the fact that his eyes felt horribly, humiliatingly blurry.

Slowly he bent until he was crouching low on the hot, sandy ground, his arms around his middle, his forehead against his knees.

"I'm sorry, Gale."

He'd known it was going to happen. He knew she would say no from the start, knew that despite everything Marcus had tried to tell him, despite everyone's ribbing and pushing and pressing, and encouragement, that it would not work out, that it would never work out.

But his chest still ached anyway.

<< ...Gale. >>

Not now, Ginny.

The dragon lapsed back into silence. It filled Gale's head until it was no longer silence but a low, buzzing noise.

I'll be all right.

He'd 'dealt' with Cass. If dealing with her was even an issue to be put like that. Really, the exchanged had left him a bit mentally drained but better. A lot better really. It was sad, it sucked, but it was something. He'd be able to not worry and fret like he had before. That was the plan at least.

On his way back to the tents however Marcus didn't expect to see Gale. Especially not so... vacant. "You okay?" Concern laced his voice. "Gale?" He'd been a bit shook up before they arrived but Marcus thought he'd be okay. He frowned. He really hoped Gale wasn't having another breakdown. But- if he was? Marcus wouldn't blame him.

He had not heard anyone approaching, let alone Marcus. So when there was suddenly a voice above his head, Gale felt his heart clatter against his chest abruptly, hoping beyond hope that it was not Eva, having followed him.

But then his mind registered who the voice belonged to, and Gale relaxed - as much as he could. He remained crouched on the ground, however, hugging his middle as though letting go would mean letting everything out - and he didn't want that.

For several long moments, Gale did not reply. Then -

"No. No I'm not okay."

Well s**t. That was the answer Marcus was hoping to avoid. Shouldering sinking, he went to Gale's side and sunk to the ground with him. "I think at this point you know what I'm going to do." He did it every time after all, he asked, he pried. He listened and tried to help as best be could.

Looking around the sand and sun were familiar, all that was missing so far, were the dead bodies. "So, is it bringing back memories, the impending doom or something else?"

Someone else might have, someone else might have thought he needed space and left him alone. Someone else would have taken one look at him and walked away, not wanting to intrude.

But not Marcus. And somehow, that reassured Gale.

He shook his head, short blonde hair swinging. He didn't look at the older hunter.

"It's....that's part of it," he said, and for a few moments he lapsed into silence, trying to work up the strength to actually admit what had happened. When he just thought it in his head, he could still pretend.

Saying it out loud made it real.

"...I got rejected," said Gale quietly, his voice muffled.

Marcus asked questions and worried about others. It was just a habit. One he just hadn't seemed to be able to break himself of. Sighing he sat himself in the sand. As gale told him that yeah, memories were a part of it, Marcus felt bad. It probably wasn't easy. This was where they started after all. Where death became a reality and was imprinted on them.

What threw Marcus for a loop however was the rejection. Gale had one crush he knew of and- "Just now and...how'd it happen?" There was nothing wrong with it but. s**t stung. It always did.

Gale pressed his face further into his knees, feeling horribly embarrassed and more than a little pained. The sting of rejection was still fresh, still digging into him as much as he tried to keep it from doing just that.

"...I told her I...liked her," he said, his cheeks a brilliant scarlet - not that Marcus could really see that in his current position. "I said I liked her and wanted to be more than just her friend and..."

His voice broke, galling him. Gale swallowed.

"And she told me that she was sorry."

There was a pause as he recalled the events of the last fifteen minutes, his mind repeating the scene over and over again. Gale exhaled slowly, turning his head sideways so that he could rest the side of his face against his knees.

"S'not like I wasn't expecting it, though. She's too good for me."

He shook his head, finally lifting it, his face paler than usual. "And there's the age thing, of course. But, you know...I'm glad I did it, even if she couldn't...say yes."

Don't think about it.

Well. That explained that. Probably not the best time to tell a girl you liked her but then he was coming back from his emotional ride with Cass. You wanted to let it out, just in case it was the end. Just in case you never got the chance.

A hand went to Gale's shoulder and Marcus nodded. "Well... I doubt it had anything to do with you not being good enough." He smiled and it was soft, not a normal cocky grin. "You told her, and that takes a lot of guts. She still cool with you or did she react..badly?"

Eva didn't seem like the type to react badly but they we under a lot of pressure.

He had sent Eva the text message with the idea of no regrets. If he was not going to come back from this mission, he was not going to die without expressing how he felt.

Marcus' hand rested against his shoulder, warm and comforting, and Gale closed his eyes briefly, exhaling slowly.

"She reacted...kindly," he said. "...she was...just as kind as she is all the time She just said..she was sorry. I knew she would, but..."

He dropped his head down again, his fingers trembling, hating himself for acting this way. It was childish and it was pathetic, and he practically radiated embarrassment. Frustration coursed though his veins - frustration, hurt, anger, and pain, all mixing into one and coiling in the pit of his stomach and reaching up into his chest until it felt too tight and too difficult to breathe.

You knew it would be hard when you chose to be a hunter. You knew that would mean staying alone - you're the youngest one here, you can't expect everything you ever wanted to fall right into your lap just because you don't act like a kid.

"...it just...sucks, is all," Gale mumbled, his face against his knees.

Well that was good. As far as rejections went it was pretty tame considering. She could have reacted like Gale carried the plague after all. But it hurt, that much he knew from experience. "Always does." There wasn't much he could say beyond that in the fact that s**t did suck and if felt terrible and it was sort of like hearing nobody liked you from you best friend.

Only not.

Giving Gale a small shake, Marcus stuck his sword in the ground and leaned over. "Hey, she's still your friend right? It's not the end of- okay maybe not the best saying but seriously," he smiled trying to look on the brighter side "You told her and she's cool with you still isn't she? So she's not interested, I bet some girl is." Because girls totally went after 16 year olds.
"You've got a British accent okay, panties can drop from that alone."

Gale shifted, turning his head to look at Marcus.

"She's...she'll always be my friend," he mumbled, very red in the face. His fingers were still trembling, and his chest still felt as though it were too tight, but at the very least, there was that. "She...promised to protect me. And she promised she wouldn't die."

He blew out a gust of air, then turned even more scarlet at Marcus' last comment, turning his head quickly so that he was facing in the other direction.

"I wouldn't know about that," he grumbled, thoroughly embarrassed.

He was a tomato. Death in the future or not, Marcus was finding it hard not to laugh slightly, a small chuckle escaping him. It was nice to take his mind off the whole end of the world fact. Relationships as complex as they were and could be, provided a good distraction.

"Well, it's not so bad then." He pat gale on the shoulder, smiling. "She likes you enough to value your friendship and feelings doesn't she? Girls like you, but you just need to make em like you more. Maybe Eva doesn't like you like that but-" He shrugged. "Another girl will. And dude no." He was smiling, their situation off his mind.

"Girls go nuts over guys with accents. But Gale really." A shake again. "It's not the end you know," it could be the end of the world, "You'll meet a girl who just clicks. but unless you take the chance you'll never know. Your job right now though-" A lighthearted shove. "You got to get through this s**t, and they you can score. Because Gale, not only do girls think you're cute, you've got an accent okay. Panties will totally drop for you if you try." It was half said in jest. Anything to keep his mind off of the reality.
