His morning had started out well. Opening the day with an abundance of showing off always put Star in a good mood. Unfortunately his showing off had been a little too abundant for someone with such a recent leg injury and left his limp a lot worse than the previous day. Ridiculous aerial acrobatics and tossing himself off a pidgeot at the desert below probably weren't high on the list of approved recuperation activities.

After returning to his (and Tambrey's) quarters to get cleaned up he reported downstairs for his department aptitude examination. He'd hoped to find a large workspace with a single superior officer to watch him demonstrate his skills in robotics. Unfortunately he'd been presented with a roomful of young, enthusiastic, freshly-promoted Grunts and a sort of standardized test for his chosen department. It was degrading. About half way through Star quit filling out blanks where he was supposed to be naming machine components and wiring charts and instead drew a diagram of how to use all the pictured parts to build two types of motors, along with a list of the necessary additional parts.

After slapping the test on the supervising Rocket's desk he asked if he could go now or if he needed to show them how to reconfigure a ramjet into a pulse jet next. This earned him a disapproving glare, but in the end he was deemed competent in the field he'd been working in for 15 years and told to report to Elite Agent Hayes in the Tech Department.

Thus Star found himself limping into the Tech Department, trying to recover from his bad mood as he knocked on the door to Hayes' office.

"S'open," a distracted tenor voice called, and indeed the door was half-cracked. When Star pushed it open he'd find himself in a brightly-lit office about the same size as a grunt room, but far less crowded. It was in a state of casual disarray; a pair of bookshelves along the walls were half-filled with technical-looking volumes, binders and textbooks alongside Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction and a plush AT-AT. The center was occupied by a sleek desk supporting a shallow tray of tiny multicolored blocks, and a brace of plastic robots, one of which hung over a computer monitor. They were rather incongruous with the very complicated, official-looking flowchart their owner had been studying just before Star knocked.

"Hey; c'mon in." The young blond man behind the desk pushed up his glasses and flashed the department's newest addition a pleasant smile. "Ian, right?"

"Yes.. though I prefer Star." His tone was pleasant enough, with a sort of artificial charm injected into it. Hayes was his direct superior. Star had slipped into his default fake smile setting. Though looking around the office he was having a hard time maintaining that setting. Toys. This man had toys in his office. He was going to be working under a child.

There was also a bright red and blue plastic gun with 'Marshmallow Blaster' printed on it propped against the desk.

"Okay," the blond laughed - not unkindly - after a blink, either at the name or the voice. He vaguely remembered it from.. back then, but it was just as strange to hear it a second time. "Well, either way - grab a chair, I'm just gonna pull up your assessment 'n figure out where we're gonna put you. Want to tell me 'bout yourself?" He shifted the multi-page flowchart off to the side a bit and put a hand on his mouse, clicking through various screens that reflected off his lenses with a mumbled 'Nice, they got it up already.'

Star stepped across the office as majestically as his limp would allow and deposited himself on the indicated chair before leaning back and crossing one leg over the other. His eyes continued to scan the room a moment longer before settling on Hayes. "Myself. Well, to touch on the most relevant points.. I have a degree in Engineering and began my career working under the original Team Galactic, where I rapidly climbed the ranks to become the sole head of the weapons robotics department.. a title I held for years." He sighed, "Until the organization's unfortunate demise. I then served under Deimos in the current Galactic, overseeing the construction of his vehicular projects." He adjusted one of his gloves, "What matters most to you, of course, is to know that I'm very good at what I do. I spent a regrettably long time watching my talents wasted under Deimos' negligent supervision. I should have realized I was on the wrong team ages ago.. it's clear to me now that Team Rocket is the superior faction. I've only been here briefly but it's apparent that this group is more intelligent in every regard. Intelligent enough to realize I may very well be the best roboticist to ever grace this facility. Regardless of rank, I'm confidant you won't let such skill go ignored or unrewarded like the Galactics did." He tilted his head, adopting a slightly different tone, "I remember you from the cell. You've seen the unpolished and reprehensible true nature of that organization. I know you're nothing like them." Star offered Hayes a confidant smile, clasping his hands together.

Hayes failed to fold his hands on the desk and give Star his rapt attention; it was split half-and-half between the spiderlike man sprawled in, over (and it was hard to tell, but possibly through) the chair and the assessment on his screen, which earned a considering brow lift.

"Looks like it," he replied in an absent but positive way when he got to the drawings of the motors, then closed the document out and sat back in his chair, listening. Something flickered across his look of polite interest at mention of the cell. "Yeah," was all he said before his smile quickly healed.

"Well, great." The elite pushed himself out of his chair and stood. "Hope you can do some good work for us; I'll show you around now. Have you had a look at the Yanmega jet?" As he crossed to Star's side of the desk and headed for the door, a pale blue Glaceon emerged from beneath it and gave the ex-Galactic a considering, slit-eyed look.

When his self-aggrandizing and sycophantic speech didn't prompt any sort of negative response from Hayes Star grinned and nodded, obediently climbing to his feet. He cast a brief glance at the emerging glaceon before turning to follow Hayes, "Yes, last week. I briefed Agents Frost and Faleen on its construction. I built it, of course."

"So you've got a handle on the power source?" Hayes paused to shut his door; the Glaceon swirled around his ankles. "That's what we really want to figure out."

"Hey." A bearded agent at one of the consoles in the outer room leaned back in his chair with a casual two-fingered salute. "Tuesday?"

The elite grinned back. "On it. Who brought the ammo?"

"Duncan's turn this week." The agent cast an appraising look over Star. Like Hayes, he had his gloves off, and there was a can of soda by his desk. "He got single round and scattershot. Regular and fruit-flavored."

"Sweet. Module?"

"Compiling."

"Cool. By the way - Roger, Ian; Ian, Roger." Hayes nodded in Star's direction. "He's gonna be joining robotics."

"I heard." The agent gave Star an acknowledging, no-more-than-civil nod.

Star's smile faded briefly and he gave the sort of chuckle that only barely contained annoyance, "Well the power sources that Deimos employs are.. complicated. Of course I understand them better than most. I... told them what I know."

Star slowed to a stop when Hayes started speaking with the bearded agent. He folded his hands behind his back, watching the pair, fake grin slowly going slack as he tried to understand the discussion. When Hayes introduced him the grin reappeared and he returned the acknowledging nod. Arching an eyebrow, he turned his eyes back on Hayes. "...fruit ...flavored?" He chuckled awkwardly, "I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that.. terminology. Is he referring to some sort of shrapnel dispersing ammunition..?"

That didn't seem to be what the elite wanted to hear; the corner of his mouth twitched back in a rueful smile and he shrugged - oh well, his behavior seemed to say, with the same level of rancor as finding out one location of a national chain had closed. He didn't press the issue further.

"Yup," the bearded Rocket quipped, completely straight-faced. "Fat-free, made by Stay-Puft Ammo." His console beeped and he nodded in a by-your-leave sort of fashion.

"Marshmallows," Hayes explained and stepped into the hall, which left Roger to his work. "Good way to blow off steam.. anyway, Robotics is down here. Rest of the hallway's Surveillance, Weapons, other departments." He pulled a keycard from his pocket and swiped it through the reader beside a sleek set of double doors, which hissed open.

"Ah.. I.... see.." Star was trying very hard to maintain his typical air of 'professional suckup', but the casual light-hearted tone of this place was making it difficult and confusing. Acting like he was on board with this sort of thing was so unnatural that he found himself rejecting it before even trying.

Unable to feign enthusiasm about mashmallow fights, he decided to switch topics, turning his eyes to the robotics lab they were entering. "Excellent." He followed Hayes, eyes drifting over the facility, "Have you decided what project I'll be overseeing first?"

While not as vast or high-ceilinged as Galactic's, Team Rocket's robotics lab was still an impressive sight, done up in brushed metal and tile like most of the base. Larger projects - including the Yanmega jet - were seen to in a large open area in toward the back, surrounded by scaffolding and Rockets. Closer to the door were spaced individual workstations, giving the feeling of an industrial workfloor mixed with an office. The elite glanced around, taking stock of who was where, then changed direction for a workstation belonging to a female agent with dark blonde hair.

"Uh-" The question caused a slight interruption in Hayes' easy stride; a faint furrow appeared in his brow. "Y'know t'be honest, I haven't thought that far ahead," he confessed, ending on a laugh. "Kinda like to ease people in and get them used to the place before we up the responsibility."

After surveying the lab, which he'd already seen part of in his first week at HQ, Star cast his eyes forward and realized he recognized the woman they were approaching. He listened to Hayes' response, then nodded, "An excellent method, sir. I'm sure for most of the agents here it's the best tactic, but to be honest, I'm used to command positions. I'm certain I can handle any responsibility that you throw at me."

Said blond agent was deeply engrossed in the project she was working on, gloves off to allow her better control of the tools, as trained steady hands tinkered away at a tiny little robot beneath a lighter magnifier.

Somewhere out in the real world a voice pricked her back to the surrounding lab.
arching her eyebrows Faleen leaned up from her work and turned in time to see Hayes and... Star coming over.

She was pleased to see Hayes, but her eyes lingered on Star with a curious look.
"Ah, Hello." She greeted formally, pushing herself to her feet.

"Well, it's good you're eager to start-" Hayes started to say, and then got himself willingly distracted. "Hey," he greeted the agent, eyes narrowing as he smiled, then cleared his throat.

"You guys've already met, but-" He gestured between the two. "Faleen, Ian; Ian, Faleen. Faleen's the liaison for this department," he explained to Star with a faint grin, "so you could call her my official advisor." The blond shifted his attention and stance toward her and pushed his glasses up. "Been able to make any headway on those new specs?"
