Weapon Crafting

While the Horsemen of War can summon their Clan weapon to them at any point, many take pride in mastering a variety of mundane weaponry as well, both combat and manufacture - no sense in limiting oneself to only one mode of battle, after all! Even 'decorative' weapons bear a brutal edge.

The Crafters' Den is a sheltered platform halfway up a massive pine, with all the materials one might want, other than metal. The head Crafter, a sharp-eyed older Horsewoman, carefully watches all students under her care to ensure a.) nothing goes missing and b.) nobody gets stupid. "You can have enough to make one knife," she grumbles. "And don't waste it, either!"

Can you impress her with your craftsmanship? ... Probably not. But it's worth a try.

Phase One: Weapon Creation

Create a weapon of War and test its mettle. If your craftsmanship is good, you may be victorious and gain the head Crafter's favor. For a minute or two, anyway.

In your first post, roll 3d4 to determine what your knife is made of, how well it is made, and how it is decorated.

First Dice: Material
- 1: Wood (+1 point)
- 2: Seashell (+2 points)
- 3: Bone (+3 points)
- 4: Stone (think flint or obsidian; +4 points)

Second Dice: Craftsmanship
- 1: You're in a bit of a hurry, so... (Shoddy: +1 point)
- 2: You throw something together. It looks kinda close? (Mediocre: +2 points)
- 3: You spend a bit of time on it, and come up with something okay. (Acceptable: +3 points)
- 4: You throw yourself into your work with passion, paying close attention to detail! (Awesome: +4 points)

Third Dice: Artistry
- 1: It's a knife. Does it really matter if it's pretty or not? (Ugly: +1 point)
- 2: You wrap the hilt in leather. Good enough. (Decent: +2 points)
- 3: You wrap the hilt in leather and add a feather. Pretty! (Shiny: +3 points)
- 4: You wrap the hilt in leather and add stylish strands of beads and feathering. That is one cool knife. (Stylish: +4 points)

Roleplay out your knife's creation! At the end of your post, put the specifics of your knife's creation (i.e. Shoddy Stylish Wood Knife) along with the total score (the total of your dice roll).

Phase Two: Weapon Testing

In the Clan of War, there is no such thing as a decorative blade! Even weapons destined to hang on the walls of huts are finished to battle-ready quality. You must test your knife and prove its worth, attacking the simple leathery mannequin kept in the Den for that purpose.

Take your knife's point score from the creation post. This is your knife's HP. You must now do battle until your knife breaks! The number of posts your knife survives determines the number of points you get.

To Do Battle:
Roll 2d4 in each post. The first dice indicates the number of damage your knife does to the test target (for RP flavor!). The second dice indicates the amount of damage your knife takes from the attack.

Battle ends when your knife shatters. Aw. (And yes, this means you can't take it with you. Sorry!)

He walked onto the platform, only to be snappily greeted by the head Craftswoman, a not-so-young Horsewoman by all intents and appearances. And though Renshu briefly wondered if she'd lived half as long as him, he still remembered that respect had to be shown to "elders". He pressed his two hands together and bent forward.

"I am honored to learn from you, master."

If the Horsewoman thought anything of his display, she said nothing and pointed to an empty work station. "There's enough to make one knife."

Renshu straightened up and nodded as he walked towards the station. The head called out rather grumpily, "And don't waste it, either!"

He kept his chuckle to himself. Maybe living up a tree wasn't that comfortable for the poor woman. Eying the material on the table, a shell caught his eye. It was a bit dull around the edges, but that wasn't anything a little sharpening couldn't fix. He remembered that his cousins had made blades of amazing strength from corals, seashell couldn't be that different.

Sharpening the sides of the shell was harder than he thought. The edges kept chipping off in little flakes that left the blade rough. He frowned. At this rate, if he kept at it, the entire blade would just disappear into small seashell flakes. And then he would really be wasting material. Better to call it quits now while the blade still had some matter to it, even if it was only questionably sharp.

The hilt had been cut the wrong size, and the blade wouldn't stay put. There was no way he could stab someone with this blade. Renshu grabbed the length of leather and started wrapping it around the hilt. Once he was convinced that the blade could not move, he added a few beads and feathers for taste.

Though unsatisfied with the finished result, what madness made him think seashells would make good blades, it was presentable.

He waved the dagger around a bit in his hands. It was a little light, Renshu wondered if it would actually hold up in battle, or if it would even survive a test.

Making his way towards the test manikin, Renshu lunged at the target. The blade didn't even break through the leather, almost no damage at all. When he held the dagger up for closer inspection, he realized there was a long crack running down the length of the dagger. Renshu frowned. The dagger might look pretty, but it certainly wasn't very strong.

He bought the dagger down on the manikin again. This time the blade sank deep into the leather. Pleasantly surprised, Renshu moved to pull the blade out except...

Except there was no blade anymore. It had shattered inside the manikin and the only thing left in the hilt was a little bump of white seashell. He let out a displeased sigh. He would never use seashell for weapons again, that was for sure.

Renshu made his way back to the crafting workshop again. Like the day before, he bowed to the master, who seemed equally as disagreeable, and made his way to the work bench.

This time, he selected a stone. It was black and glossy. When he chipped at it, the edges came off in chips that left a sharp serrated edge on the knife. Renshu's grin widened. That was the kind of effect he wanted. The boy carefully chipped away at the blade until all the edges were sharp. Satisfied with the blade, he tied it to the hilt with leather. Renshu was in a hurry to test it, to find out how much better this obsidian would be in comparison to seashells.

He brought the knife to the testing mannequin and thrust it forward. The dagger sank deep into the leather of the mannequin. But as Renshu pulled it out, he was too smug to realize that the leather binding had come loose and the blade was not tied in tightly enough.

The second hit struck as true as the first, but failed to sink in as deep. The blade had already become loose, and when Renshu went to pull it out of the mannequin, the obsidian blade fell out, onto the floor.

He felt a stare boring into the back of his neck, and the boy didn't have to look back to realize who it was. Clearly, he had failed yet again to make a suitable blade. This was harder than he thought it would be.
