POISON/ ANTIDOTE CRAFTING:

The ability to make poisons and potions from few materials is considered a vital skill for the clan of famine. When resources are scarce, one must improvise and use the tools at their disposal. Or just mix things and force something to drink it, (or injection, that sometimes yields much better results). Those wishing to make a poison not only need to know what is effective and what is not, but how to cure it as well. Killing a test subject too soon is…inadvisable.

Sadly, students will not be getting to play around with the more dangerous ingredients and runes, but they will get to make a few ‘interesting’ concoctions with the various ingredients they have. Aside from making their minor poison, they must also make an antidote. Untimely, their goal is to create more than what they destroy as then they can harvest more ‘results’ at a later time.

Stage One

Students are led to a table littered with various possible materials. Rolling 3 d 10, they get 3 ingredients. If one is rolled twice, (two of the dice give the same number) they may roll again until they have 3 different ingredients.
1- Thyme (+2)
2- Mint (no bonus)
3- Mandragora root (+1)
4- Dried dragon blood (+1)
5- Human’s tears (-2)
6- Mysterious mushrooms (+1)
7- Filtered Water (-1)
8- Mysterious yellow substance of questionable origins ( -2)
9- Rune stone (+1)
10- Foxglove (+2)
Add up the points for your ‘unrefined’ solution.

Stage Two

Taking your mixture to the filtration system, a smaller version of a chemist’s set, you must roll 1 d 4 to determine how well you refined your poison.
1- Not much seems to have changed but now it’s an odd thick brown paste. (no change to your poison, UNLESS in the negatives in which it gains +1)
2- It looks… like the color changed? (+2 to your poison!)
3- The result is a glowing blue thick liquid. (+3 to your poison!)
4- You end up with a clear, if slightly tinted liquid (+4 to your poison!)
Taking your Original results from the ‘unrefined’ solution and adding the filtration bonus, you now have your POISON TOTAL.

Stage Three

Now onto making an antidote. The table of ingredients sits rights next to the poison…probably not the best idea, given how some might mix the two. Rolling 3 d 10, students get 3 ingredients. If one is rolled twice, (two of the dice give the same number) they may roll again until they have 3 different ingredients.
1- Thyme (-2)
2- Cactus flower (+2)
3- Human’s Blood (+1)
4- Dried human’s blood (+2)
5- Human’s tears (-2)
6- Crushed skulls (+1)
7- Filtered Water (NO CHANGE)
8- Mint (-1)
9- Rune stone (+1)
10- Foxglove (-1)
Add up the points for your ‘unrefined’ solution

Stage Four

Taking your mixture to the purification station, it’s a battery of small open flames and strange symbols, you must roll 1 d 4 to determine how well you refined your antidote.
1You end up with a thick tar like substance. (+4 to your antidote!)
2- It’s a glowing red paste now (+3 to your antidote!)
3- Not much changes, it just got a little thicker (+2 to your antidote!)
4- You end up with a clear, if slightly tinted liquid (no change to your antidote, UNLESS in the negatives in which it gains +1)
Taking your Original results from the ‘unrefined’ solution and adding the purification bonus, you now have your ANTIDOTE TOTAL.

Stage Five

The student must now administer their poison and antidote to a small mouse, bird or fish minipet raised to gauge how effective a poison is. They're kept in one of the tanks nearby. They can administer their creations by mouth or by injection.
NOTE! To be considered a ‘pass’ the antidote MUST be stronger than the poison, even if it is in the negatives. If they are equal it is considered a fail.

POISON BREAK DOWN
-3 to 0 <- It's pretty vibrant but apparently you want it turning dark
1-2 <- A few black spots here and there, not much really
3-4 <- The black outweighs the color in ratio now, it's pretty good actually!
5+ Your minipet is a deep black, good job!

ANTIDOTE BREAK DOWN
-3 to 0 <- It doesn’t seem to help at all, it's still back
1-2 <- Helps a bit, but only a few dots of color have come back
3-4 <- The subject is cured! Back to their normal color. Well done!
5+ Your subject is not only cured, but extremely better than before! The colors changing on their coat.

Rafael yawned hugely. He attempted to stifle it with the back of one hand and cast a furtive glance at the instructor, hoping he wasn't offended by the rat-boil's sleepiness. He couldn't help it! Whatever he'd sniffed in that plants room was wrecking him.

"Are y-you still all woozy?" He asked Taryn, taking his glasses off for the billionth time and rubbing his eyes as he tried to focus.

On the bright side, at least the instructor wasn't rambling on about anything. In fact, it all seemed very succinct. It was good, because if Rafe had to listen to any lengthy instructions, he would probably fall asleep right on the spot.

He made his way up to pick out his ingredients. Unfortunately, his sleep-filled brain was inattentive and he realized after he'd made it back to his table that he'd picked up two of the same jar. Blah. Hoping that wasn't grounds for an automatic failure, he made his way back up to get new supplies.

Okay, that was better. He had....some mint. A rune stone. And a......thing. That was yellow. He squinted at it half-heartedly, gave up hope of figuring it out, and looked around to try and remember what the next step was.

2- Mint (no bonus)

"Mmhm..." and that was all the attention paid to Rafe.

Oh, no... they had to read labels? Taryn lifted a vial, wavered, and squinted. This'd have to do...

She grabed two others based on their color, went back to her station, and mixed them together. Alright... on to refining!

Okay, potions. Potions. Crap, he wasn't too good with liquids. Give him mechanical parts and he could put things apart and together easy, but liquids . . . chemicals were volatile. and after his vista at the oasis of oil, well, he was more than a bit wary with what the clan had.

Still, the open class was there before them, and Rafe and Taryn had taken initiative at any rate. Mort grabbed a few vials, a bit satisfied to add human tears to anything.

Okay, how should she...?

Taryn only had a very basic understanding of chemistry, and might have looked to her companions was she not sure that turning her head would make her topple over. She wasn't cracking any more glass.

Making a little whimpering noise, the ghoul set the substances through a filter and... oh, strange, it had gone from yellow to green? How?

Rafael mixed his ingredients together. He had a sinking suspicion he'd missed a step, or done something wrong, because his potion....definitely did not look like Taryn's potion.

Grinding his teeth together as he often did when stressed, the plague rat looked over at Mort for some comfort that maybe this wasn't going too badly.

Hold on, now they had to make an antidote? Taryn traveled back to the front table and... please, let these be antidote components. She looked to the professor, but he was just wavering in and out of vision. Nope. Back to her table...

Man, Taryn was like the wind and already on her antidote! Mort struggled to keep up, trying out the same stuff Rafe had to try and make his potion better. His attempts garnered him a muddy looking potion, and he passed the younger boil a look and shrug. Well at least it hadn't exploded on them, right? Not exploding was always a good sign in his eyes. Unless the potion needed to have the ability to explode? Aghhhhhhhhh.

Okay, so, wait. He had to make an antidote? But...how? He wasn't even entirely sure that he'd even made a poison to begin with. It kind of looked like he'd just made mud.

He tried to catch the instructor's eye to ask for clarification, but quickly discovered how futile that was. Another monstrous yawn came over him and he tottered sleepily to the table, picking out ingredients almost at random.

Alright, poke all the runes? Yes, all of them. Taryn wished that she had a better (read: any) control over flames that were not her own. She'd have been less likely to light herself on fire. Alright... all or nothing!

Alright, so hopefully this antidote part wouldn't hurt either . . . .Hopefully. Still, of the options presented to create one, it was satisfying to crush skulls and add more human tears, because even imagined suffering made the zomboil feel better. Also crushing things. 83 He could picture individual faces of horror in silent screams as he made each skull into a fine dust with far too much pleasure.

Rafael peered down at his mixture skeptically, then looked back up at the rest of the room. Was Taryn....was she setting herself on fire?

....This wasn't boding well for his future in this class.

Carefully, he headed over to the flames to refine his antidote, and breathed a sign of relief that at least it turned into a clear, simmering liquid. Unless it wasn't supposed to do that. Was it supposed to do that?

Okay, so fire. Gaaah, fire. Deep breaths, Mort. This wasn't so bad, as little fires like this he could handle - after the fire cave, everything was little in comparison really. Once rate was finished, handling his clear concoction with trepidation, Mort gave his a go and turned up the heat, watching with tight lips. Strangely, his antidote turned red and began to glow. Er . . . was that supposed to happen?

2- It’s a glowing red paste now (+3 to your antidote!)

So her poison was green, and her antidote was clear. Color theory told her that this was a bad thing. Feeling deeply guilty, she stabbed a mouse in the neck with her poison. Please, please... what?! Correct her if she was wrong, but that mouse was now neon green. Okay, no this... this wasn't right. The antidote came next, meant for the scruff but landing in the head. The mouse gave a displeased little wriggle... and it gained some white spots back.

...well, dizzy, what could she ask for? She collapsed to the floor and whined.

"Help--" and then, to explain herself to the professor, "Got bitten by a plant, me and... and him? Might die... s'okay, though."

End result: +1
