Once Wilson stepped out of the tent, he was hit by a warm gust of air. He blinked once, twice. As expected of the Sahara, it was warm. The trainee reached up to rub specks of sand out of his eyes. It was sandy, too. His weapon snorted in the back of his mind, neighing impatiently and urging for his partner to get moving and start patrolling. Wilson sighed, muttering to himself. “Yes, yes.” He opened the tent flap wider before he finally stepped back outside. Fortunately, the area around the tents was more peaceful, but he reminded himself that it was only a false sense of tranquility. He could still clearly recall the twin centipedes, spewing out what appeared to be acid and base—Wilson cracked a smile at that, he had only taken a year of chemistry, but it had been an enjoyable year nonetheless.

He shook his head and took a few steps forward. Stop. Now was not the time to get nostalgic on his past life. Wilson was a hunter now. He had abandoned that sort of lifestyle, but still… A wistful glance to the sky before he decided to walk away from the tents, away from safety and a moment of calm. He would be back soon, hopefully.

It wasn’t long until he found that the tents were no longer in sight when he turned around, but Wilson was confident that perhaps a minute of walking back would conjure their looming figures again. He actually found it calming to walk around, at least to walk around with nothing to fight. A splash of color up ahead caught his attention and he kept walking until he realized that it was specks of dark red. Although he bent down to examine it more closely, the sand rustled and swept it out of his grasp. Still kneeling, he stared in the direction of the flecks before standing up and continuing to walk. It was time to keep patrolling.

It was still quiet as Wilson continued to walk around the area. Every once in a while he dared to stop and stare in the direction of the tents. He had yet to encounter a creature, so perhaps he should return to the tent once more and see if there was anything helpful he could do for the other hunters. He was rather close to heading back when he heard something scuffling through the sand. When he turned around he slowly lifted his head to stare at an oversized insect. Its mandibles clacked together until it released a noisy shriek as it hurled itself at him.

“Woah!” He yelped, pulling the mask over his face. Wires and metal quietly clacked against each other as the trainee struggled to move out of the creature’s path. As much of a runner as he had been, the weight of his weapon as well as the sand made it difficult for him to run. Wilson hissed as his foot slightly sunk into the ground with each step he took. He could hear it screeching and only just barely managed to jump away as it lashed out toward him, but its mouth still latched onto his leg. Grunting, the man bashed it in the head a couple times until it relinquished its hold on him. His mind was abuzz with adrenaline. Wilson’s eyes darted everywhere, his head constantly moving to compensate for the narrow vision his gasmask provided. It was still close, slowly writhing while trying to reorient itself again. A deep breath, his eyes refusing to close for more than half a second before he pointed both cannons at the insect and let out a stream of gas. It threw back its head, screaming and clicking its mandibles before scurrying away.

Wilson took a moment to breathe.

The large insect was gone, allowing the death trainee a respite before he could continue patrolling. He leaned over, cannon-covered hands resting lightly against his knees before he decided to just let his arms droop while he waited for his heart to stop beating so rapidly. With nothing calling for his immediate attention, Wilson closed his eyes for seconds at a time. It had only been one monster, one measly creature that hadn’t injured him too badly. Eyes flicked open so he could examine his leg. The pants sleeve was torn at the edges, but otherwise still in good condition. Quiet. Everything was quiet again, or was that only a trick of his mind?

He stood up straight, only just now catching sounds that were not the rustle of wind blowing sand. In the distance, Wilson heard something rumbling followed by a repetition of clashing noises. They must have been weapons. Glazed eyes stared in the direction of the sounds. Of course. The peace was only an illusion, after all. There was even visible proof on his clothes. Allan, Simon, and the others were fighting out there. They were dying. A flash of the bodies strewn across the battlefield from when he had first arrived to the Sahara. He shuddered. Someday that would be him. Would he be glad? No, but he wasn’t exactly peachy keen being stuck with patrolling and idly sitting around in the tents. There was no medium. It was one or the other.

Wilson decided to head back.
