Kali
Why would anyone be considered a dark one? Perhaps not as a physical description but surely for something that lies deeper inside the soul. Such is the case for this she wolf. While her physical self is that of a reddish brown wolf with cream as her underbelly with ever so light stripes along her body. Her eyes were a dull gold color, almost burnt yet they held intelligence, wisdom and that extra something else.
That something else is the very reason why this story exists. This story about Kali begins like many stories do, by the day of her birth. Yet to understand that of strong sense of family and where such darkness came from this is taken further to that of her parents. The distant memory begins with a; Once Upon A Time…
Kali was born into a reclusive pack that consisted of her immediate family that was good at keeping out of sight from their counterparts of other packs. Generally in the dead of night they appear out of the very trees to hunt and enjoy the fresh world of night that the heavens have graced them. It you were quick you could spot them racing through the trees like dark silent shadows or rarely during the day to move from one place to another. They covered their tracks well by the males of this pack to keep predators and curious wolves from following.
This group of wolves was very good at hunting and fighting. As well as showing open affection towards each other, teaching the young their ways of tracking, fighting, and hunting and even taking great care into their physical well being. They kept away from other packs out of respect and wanting no trouble, yet for some packs even the small ones that were not widely known, trouble seemed to have found them.
Kali's childhood and adolescent happiness with her family ended in one night of terror at the hands of one such pack. The pack of wolves had settled down after hunting a juice prey, most of them taking their pick of the bones to chew on to pass the time. Kali and her older brother Vishnu shared a bone while listening to their parents tells stories to their younger siblings, Sati and Krishna. Both pups were listening intently to their father, Shiva, telling them a scary story as their mother, Durga, looked on amused. All seemed peaceful until their uncle came running to them bloodied.
Shiva stopped and frowned, looking at his brother in concern. Their uncle spoke to Shiva quickly as Durga urged all her pups and their cousin's up to start moving out. The larger males hanged back and went to prowl for the threat to get rid of it. Kali looked back to see her father, uncle, Vishnu, and two other older male cousins leave to defend the rest of them. Her mother, Durga, motioned for them to leave silently through the shadows of the trees alert for anything that would give away their threat.
However, they didn't make it too far from where they have been resting as a large group of wolves came charging at them with bared fangs and sharp claws with their eyes having this seemingly unholy red light in their eyes. The older female wolves bared their teeth and ordered Kali to take the young pups with her for safety as only two of the males, Vishnu and their father came back from behind the large wolves to attack with more force.
The female wolf did as she was told and urged the pups to run with her away but the rogue wolves were once again faster and better skilled with their weapons. While Kali was dodging those claws with her head low and encouraging the little ones to keep up, some captured them dead on, striking them in their place. Hearing them, Kali stopped. Slowly she turned around to look at them. Going near the pups she nudged them with her nose to see if they were breathing but not a single whimper was heard. Looking up she watched as her mother was cut down, as was her father.
Something inside Kali snapped. It was like this sudden darkness of pure rage boiled through her veins and erupted in a vicious snarl that echoed around them. The wolves looked up, slightly startled by the sound but didn't see her. No, she was quick to use the shadows to her advantage and started to fight them with her own teeth bare. Tearing into flesh and bone, the wolves once again started their attack but Kali didn't care. No, she didn't feel anything but that rage consuming her giving her strength to her brother who was on his last thread of strength that caused the rest of the rogue pack to abandon them.
Breathing heavily, Kali went to her fallen brother. Silently she wept for losing her family to unknown wolves. Many questions popped up into her mind as to why their cousins would bother them and just kill them. But those questions didn't matter as she felt her life changed completely. Giving her farewells to all that she lost, the wolf turned to follow the trail of the remaining pack that attacked them. She promised that she would take her revenge out on them all for doing this. Oh yeah, Kali wasn't the nice adolescent anymore.
She was an adult before even reaching the proper age of it as she spent a year or so bringing terror to the pack grounds from which those wolves came from. Almost every night she would strike them causing nothing but grief as the darkness and rage inside her was unleashed to seek the proper revenge on them. Hell, she even started to enjoy it a little too much. In truth, she become what her namesake is, Dark Goddess as she embraced that darkness.
Yet, all of that came to an end when she encountered a small wolf pup lost on the border of the pack lands she hunted on. Kali had been about to wreck havoc on the wolves who have done everything they could to ward her off, even to the point of praying and doing rituals to their god(s) to bring about an end to this nightmare. The soft whimper of a pup, however, took her attention to investigate where that sound was coming from.
Baring her teeth and always ready for a bloody fight, it surprised her to see this little pup curled up and barely strong enough to get up. The pup looked up at her frightened with tears welling in his eyes, causing all of her rage and darkness to subside. What replaced it were these maternal instincts to comfort and help him. Making sure that no one was around and that everything was still, Kali nuzzled the little one, showing him something she hadn’t felt in a long time, tenderness to help the pup.
While her attention was on coaxing the little pup to get up, two wolves that patrolled the border of their pack lands for her stopped and growled in warning. Their hackles raised with bared teeth as they poised their bodies to lunge at any given moment. However the focus of the she wolf was on his adorable little boy who began to crawl on his round belly to her and whimpered softly. Looking at him, he nuzzled his head and picked him up with her teeth but the scruff of his neck. Giving the wolves a lethal look she trotted away into the darkness, forever leaving them to their peace while she went far away to hers.
From that day on, she adopted the little pup as her own and named him Sacha. Kali raised Sacha like her parents raised her, teaching him how to be silent and learn his basic skills. Though as much as Kali loved Sacha there was something that nagged at her. Being a lone wolf was not something that she wanted Sacha to have to live throughout his whole life. Kali wanted him to learn what it felt like to be in a pack, to understand the meaning to be in one and to know what a real family was.
If Sacha did decide to go join a pack, she would always be close by to keep a watchful eye on him. After all she was his mother in a sense so it was her right. Yet if Sacha didn't, then hopefully he could find a mate to settle down in their own little spot and who knows maybe Sacha would be Kali's bridge either back into a pack or into a new family.
While may would take it to heart the tragedy of such a past in the sense that it would be all consuming to never again seek out attachments and forever become bitter at the way the hand of fate was dealt, may would also swear to hunting down any descendents of those wolves in a never ending cycle. Then again that would be the correct anti-hero or villainous thing to do. Kali would forever hold such a blood rage inside until it is unleashed or until it has been tamed.
