Before powering up that evening, Remarque had been going stir crazy sitting at home, poking at his computer, rifling through his notes. He was still plagued with an awful sniffle, so he’d helped himself to a bowl of chicken noodle soup and tea his mother had promised would help with nasal congestion—and then the tea had tried to put him to sleep and he’d had no choice but to help himself to a fresh pot of coffee. At eleven at night, he’d figured that was a bad idea; he thought it might help him study or do his homework, but all it did was have him pacing—and then punching at his too-worn punching bag—and then he gave in, powered up, and stepped through the mirror.

The park was his destination this evening; he had been feeling a little claustrophobic in his small room and the open space of the park allowed an instant wave of relief to flood through him. He sucked in a breath of cool, fresh air and tried to will himself to relax.

He stretched, tried to calm down, though Remarque wasn’t really the sort of guy who would rather meditate himself into calm when he had the option to run around and work out his energy on its own. Cracking his knuckles, he pushed away from the mirror and went to see if he couldn’t make tonight productive.

Lieutenant Mesolite had been up a tree. It was a good place to be so late at night, for several reasons. Reason number one, it gave a bird’s eye view of the grassy park below, and with that bird’s eye view, it gave an advantage for spotting either civilians, who would be good to take energy from, or senshi, who would be good to kick in the face. Reason number two, trees were just fun to sit in, and she was quite comfortable, stretched out on a large limb, just laying there, playing with her paper clip chain.

So, two reasons was several enough to her. Besides, she was too cool to really need to explain herself anyway.

For as ‘bad a**’ as Mesolite thought she was, however, she still jumped when a very large energy source suddenly popped into existence out of nowhere. In fact, she quite nearly fell out of the tree, managing to catch herself at the last minute, clinging to the branch by her fingertips, before letting go, landing in front of Remarque on all fours, quite like a cat.

She straightened up and blinked. “Oh. I know you. What are you doing just…popping up like that. You scared the crap out of me.” The lieutenant wasn’t trying to be funny, she was just trying to say it like it was. He had scared her. Sort of.

Remarque stiffened, only slightly, when Mesolite dropped down in front of him. He had known someone was in the area the moment he walked through the mirror—but in the tree?

…Well, jeez, with the way he had run into that girl last time, he shouldn’t have been surprised. Her reflexes were decent enough to save herself from a complete wipeout, but that didn’t stop him from staring down at her and supplying a very judgemental look.

“…I spooked you?” he prompted, one brow rising on his forehead. “…I wasn’t even trying to sneak up on you. What were you doing up there, daydreaming?”

His hands on his hips, Remarque tilted his head. “…That’s a good way to get yourself killed, Mesolite. What the hell were you doing up there, anyway? Hunting birds?”

“Yeah, you spooked me. I was sitting there, minding my own business, and there wasn’t anything around.” She paused, flashing him an annoyed look. “Also, before I continue, I was up in the tree to get a better look at my area. Nobody could see me up there, and I could see a lot more from up there then I could just walking around. Besides. It gave me the element of surprise. Anyway, I was minding my own business, and then your huge aura pops up out of…out of nothing. “

Mesolite looked at him, quite clearly giving him the stink eye. “How did you manage to do that, anyway?” She was curious, she had to admit. He was a strong guy, and that was a pretty big aura to just…turn on and off…if he could though.

Well, that would be pretty badass.

While Remarque could understand her wanting to scope out the area, he figured there were far better ways to do it than in a tree. Like by looking for energy signatures. A small smirk grew on his face at her ignorance, and he wasn’t particularly in the mood to answer entirely honestly.

“What, they don’t teach you guys that in Negaverse training camp? The hell do they have you guys up to, anyway? I’m still not convinced they don’t just awaken you guys and then kick you out to the curb to go get energy. Have they really taught you…nothing?”

He seemed casual, amused with her array of expressions; usually the Negaverse agents he met were too serious or just out for blood—or Bazzite.

She gave him a look. “Negaverse training camp? You guys have a training camp? We have a training camp? Nobody invited me to any bloody training camp.” Mesolite crossed her arms, looking almost like a child about to throw a tantrum. “No. They didn’t really teach me much. My General told me a few things…and that ninja guy told me some stuff. And you were a little bit helpful, but…that was really it.”

The girl shrugged then scratched the back of her neck. “I don’t know. I figured I was pretty safe up there. I mean. You’re always safer when you have the high ground, right? And there isn’t much that could sneak up on me. I was watching for energy signatures…but you…just sort of…”

Mesolite narrowed her eyes then huffed. “You popped out of the ground. Just…appeared out of thin air. You startled me. That’s not my fault. I blame you, completely. I was perfectly safe.”

Remarque was not sure there was a training camp, but at the rate things were going, he’d have liked to see one put in place. He was frustrated by the concept of inadequate allies, not just because they were a danger to themselves but because they were a danger to him. Never mind that he had met Mesolite when she had started by attacking him—what happened if the enemy got their hands on her? What if they used her as leverage? If she couldn’t handle herself, then she was a liability.

“I didn’t pop out of the ground. Popped out of a mirror, actually. It’s a skill the Dark Mirror Senshi have—mirror walking. We’re probably more likely to sneak up on you than a Senshi or knight…so far as I know, they don’t have any sort of skill like that. So, unless you’ve made some enemies of your allies, you probably don’t have anything to worry about. I’d be more concerned about falling out of that tree than someone sneaking up on me. I mean—you can’t stay up there all night, right? How do you gather energy?”
PostPosted: Fri Jul 20, 2012 11:52 am

She seemed rather in awe of that. They could walk through mirrors? How epic was that…

“What does it feel like? Mirror walking? Do you just…is it strange? Is it very bright inside of a mirror? Do you ever get stabbed by the glass?” She was sounding like a child in preschool, watching a show-and-tell project. Way to show your age and experience, Mesolite.

“I don’t think I’ve made any enemies of my allies, just my, well. Enemies. Some tiger girl and I had a nice row a while ago. It was quite lovely.” Her awed expression faded after he mentioned her falling out of the tree and she bristled. “I wasn’t going to fall. For your information, I’ve done more dangerous things than sit in a tree all night. Besides, they’re not that tall. And I was going to gather the energy when I saw someone that I could gather it from, obviously. There…just isn’t anyone out here tonight, really…”

And that fact, made the night very, very boring.

Remarque, while he scoffed and shook his head, did not seem to be doing so in an entirely scathing manner. “Let me give you a little bit of advice, Mesolite. You’re more likely to gather energy when you go out looking for it than when you stay hiding up in a tree. Unless you’re in a more popular area than this.”

He paused for a moment, glanced at the mirror he’d come from, and then asked, “Let me show you a better place? Lots of homeless people camp in the area, and—yeah, you run into Senshi every now and then, but if you keep your eyes and ears open, they’re pretty easy to avoid. We can Mirror walk, I’ll let you see how it feels for yourself, how’s that sound?”

Ares had never said not to engage in mirror walking with others, and though he’d only ever taken Thule with him through a mirror before, Mesolite—while not a Dark Mirror Senshi—was still an ally. They were both on the same side—what was the harm in helping her out a little bit?

She made a bit of a face, and didn’t really want to bring up the fact she was feeling very lethargic, and honestly didn’t feel like doing that much work tonight, and had been up in a tree to relax a bit, but nodded, at least until he mentioned her actually doing the mirror walking.

“Excuse me, you want me to do what? Mirror walk? But isn’t that something only you and your kind can do or something? I just wanted you to explain it, I didn’t really want to…you know, participate in it.”

The girl sighed, though, perhaps this could add some spice to the night and dispel the rest of her lethargy. “What the hell. Yeah, okay I’ll try mirror walking. If you say there’s a bunch of people around to take energy from, it’s worth trying something new.” That’s what the job was for, anyway. That’s why she was what she was. She couldn’t be afraid to take risks just because they seemed completely insane. It was time to start going with the flow, and not resisting it.

Remarque was her ally, not someone who wanted to cause her harm. She did have to trust him. She really did.

For a moment there, Remarque had wondered if Mesolite was going to decline. He was glad she didn’t.

Extending his arm to her, he linked arms with her and guided her through a mirror. “At least it will be an interesting experience, right? And you’ll be the first Negaverser I’ve ever taken through mirrorspace. You should count yourself lucky.”

Looking at the mirror in front of him, he started with his hand. Placing the palm of it on the surface of the mirror, he pushed his hand through first, to demonstrate the method. “It’s totally safe and harmless. You’ll be fine. Now, just relax and pretend like you’re walking through any old door, okay?” he said, offering only a slight pause before he stepped through the mirror, pulling her with him.

Stepping through the mirror was as painless as ever; he basked in the warmth for the short few seconds it took to walk through mirrorspace. It was soothing for him—a nice, calming break from the dark night.

When he stepped out on the other side, they were near a light post—and already it was obvious that he had made a valid claim. There was an older man bundled up in a jacket, snoring on a bench right across from them. Remarque wore a soft smile, glad that this wasn’t going to be a complete bust. “And, voila. That’s what it’s like to mirrorwalk.”

Oh that, that wasn’t fun at all. Whatever that place…that mirror place. Mesolite wrinkled her nose and closed her eyes for a long moment, wishing she had had the sense to close them during the walk, however short the walk might have been. She felt rather sick and dizzy and just made a grunting noise in response to Remarque’s happy go lucky statement about that being mirror walking.

Well. Cross that off of her list of enjoyable activities. That wasn’t fun at all. “Next time, hopefully I’ll be able to teleport and I won’t need to do that. Again. That…How are you not dizzy?” She opened her eyes finally and stared up at Remarque. “Everything just kept moving and swimming in front of my eyes. What a trippy place.”

The dizziness was finally passing though, thanks in part to the cool night air and Mesolite straightened herself out, glancing around. Her eyes fell on the snoozing homeless man and she grinned. “Well, at least there are people here. That’s a good thing. Where are we exactly? I’ll have to come back around here on my own sometimes. Good pickings.”

“Very good pickings,” Remarque agreed, one brow arched at the girl. Sure, mirrorspace could be a little difficult to get used to, but it wasn’t like it was terrible—and after a few trips through the mirror he’d very well forgotten how odd it might have been the first time. “The easiest way to find it is by getting to the big fountain. Which is,” he pointed down the path, “About two minutes that way. Then you just meander around to this area. They’re all about over here. Maybe because nobody really ventures onto this side of the park after dark. Not much to see.”

It was certainly the less scenic route the park had to offer, but then again—Remarque wasn’t here for the flowers and trees.

“Just try not to kill anyone if you can help it. Gonna make it really awkward if a bunch of corpses are suddenly popping up. Might chase everyone away. I’ve noticed a few senshi are fond of the area, but,” he gestured to the trees. “It’s easy to lose them if you’re more inclined to run. Plenty of trees to climb up and hide in, since I know how fond you are of that,” he said with a slight grin.

The girl snorted and shook her head, grinning none the less. “I do like trees. Thanks for showing me this place, Remarque. You’ve been a big help. You’re doing the whole alliance thing right, at least in my mind.” She looked up at him then turned her gaze to the homeless guy before her. “I’ll do my best not to kill them. You forget that if I did, not only would the other people get suspicious, but the smell would get ten times worse. I mean, if we think they smell bad now, can you imagine how they would smell if they were dead?”

She made a face and mimed a gagging motion. “I would never again enter this park. And that’s a shame. Because I love this park. I love to play marbles here. “

The lieutenant made her way almost lazily to the homeless fellow and drained him of some energy, not enough to cause any real harm, just enough so he would be sleeping well into the next day. Maybe by then the authorities would be able to find him and get him out of there, or something.

“Anyway, thanks again for your help, I think I’m going to head on home. I’m still feeling a little…” She made a face. “Don’t ever take me mirror walking, okay? But, I’ll see you around I’m sure.” She gave a dainty little wave, and skipped off into the night. The park was very large, and she wasn’t sure just what way to go, but she would find her way. She always did in the end. Plus, she had a little energy to give to General Painite.

Remarque’s eyes followed her as she skipped off. Negaverse Agents were certainly something curious. He shook his head when Mesolite disappeared from view and brushed himself off out of habit. At least this encounter had gone a little better than the last one. Even if she was totally wrong about mirrorspace.

Still, he couldn’t help but be amused by her antics. He didn’t mind sharing this location for energy since he had already moved on to bigger, better places—and he’d rather the Negaverse get the energy than no one.

Speaking of bigger, better places, Remarque had just the place in mind. He’d enjoyed this stroll in the park, but the night was still young, and he had alleys to prowl.

Mesolite had gone on her way, it was time for him to do the same. Turning, he reacquainted himself with the mirror he had stepped out of, and set his eyes on gathering some energy of his own.
