User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.It has been about two weeks since the acha -- the only sane acha Slide has ever met -- invited him to come back to the swamp and brave the damp and heat to hear traditional acha songs and stories.

Slide would have been a liar if he'd said this didn't send a thrill through him every time he thought about it, but his pride would never let him accept that fact. Despite the fact that Many Voices had caught him actually smiling of his own accord, Walks Without Rhythm had never actually told his daughter why. But she had pestered him on and off for two weeks, and finally he'd given in -- explaining that he was going back to the swamp to finally get some answers from an acha he had met while on a food-gathering run.

It all sounded terribly fabricated, but Many Voices knew that glint in her User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.father's deep-set eyes, and she hadn't questioned him. He had set out that evening, traveling through the evening and on into the night when it wasn't so hot. Curious, she had followed him, and had griped and groaned most of the way; her endurance was not his. She had not figured out how to walk without tendons or bones, as he did, with his odd, sliding, ground-eating gait.

Not even the voice in her head had much to say, except are you SURE you want to follow him and hare off into the swamp for parts unknown? for a mere ACHA? The voice continued to balk and sulk in her head, tone petulant, but Many Voices had ignored it. She often did.

-*-

They arrived in the swamp several days later, and only after asking several kin did anyone know of Hidden Twilight and his band of dancers. One of the kin so questioned gave the buck an odd look, which Slide ignored (if he noticed it at all) -- what would two traveling, dusty types like this want with an acha?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. A week in the desert, away from his troupe and the stresses they created, has done Twilight a world of good. He's returned with a fresh mindset, and hasn't planned the vicious murder of his dancing partners more than once. The week has also given him time to sound out more stories about sand worms, since Walks Without Rhythm had been so oddly fixated on them, and he had invited the fellow to come find him. It was only polite, in Twilight's mind, that he entertain his eventual guest with something he knows the other is interested in.

He's so focused that he's taken by surprise when his dimmer (of mind, not coat) partner approaches him.

Acid Etched is not a dumb buck, despite whatever thoughts the singing Acha might think. He plays the bumbling fool, to be sure, but he's really quite observant, and whatever is on Twilight's mind since that trip he went on has had the smaller male so distracted that even Ice is getting concerned. And for Ice to voice those concerns to Acid means he's pretty much freaked out. But Ice is not one to talk about things other than dancing or telling Twilight how to improve his singing.

So Acid elects himself--not that there's really much choice, it's only the three bucks and Twilight's psychotic little fennec, who can't talk and only tries to bite Acid--to ask the Acha, "What, by the name of the Mother, is wrong with you recently?" User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Twilight grimaces a bit, then sighs and tells his partner the gist of his meeting with the sand-colored buck with blazing eyes. "And I invited him to bring his mate and family and see us and stay with us for a bit and I'd just like to have everything ready, thank you! Have you and Ice been practicing the new dances I showed you?"

All of this remains unknown and unseen to Slide, who does not rush in making his way back to the swamp: and how could he, when the mud sucks at his heels, turning his fur limp and matted, and when he must move at Many Voices' pace. His daughter has not built up her endurance to his level, and though she trots dutifully at his heels, brow furrowed in concentration and for once completely silent, they still move more slowly than Walks Without Rhythm would like.

It means that it is near evening on the third day of travel when they make their way to Twilight's location near a stream; it was no work to ask about to find rumors of the acha and his two kimeti companions. Unfortunately, perhaps, for Twilight, the few kin Slide asked met this question with a sniff or rolled eyes: as if it were something distasteful or ridiculous.

Many Voices is the first to voice an opinion, looking at the dainty acha: "That's an acha?"

Slide grunts. The sound is singular: perhaps a warning. "Yes. Twilight!" he calls: "I have brought my daughter."
PostPosted: Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:21 am

Twilight whirls when he hears the rough voice calling his name. "Wondrous! You're here. I was just explaining to my partner here that I had invited you and yours to come visit." He bows to the smaller golden female behind Slide, and speaks his welcome. "Good day, miss. My name is A Hidden Twilight, though please feel free to call me Twilight. My bright-coated friend here is Acid Etched, one of a pair of brothers who are the dancers in our little troupe." He kicks a small hoof out into the green buck's leg, silently commanding him to introduce himself.

"'lo, I'm Acid. I dance, like what the short one said. My brother's around here somewhere, probably trying to perfect some bit of the routine again. Nice to meet ya, dudes!" Okay. The buck is kind of intimidating with those eyes. They're, like, hot blue, the burning blue that looks all chill but hurts when you get close. And the doe, well, she's not as scary as her dad, but there's like, this air that says "Don't go there, bro."

Which means Acid promptly goes there. "So, what's your name, pretty lady?"

Walks Without Rhythm does cut a particular sort of profile: it is not quite forbidding, but it comes close. It is the intensity in those eyes and the guarded expression, the easy way he holds his athletic frame and the staid sort of quiet awkwardness he cultivates. If someone would point out exactly what he looks like, Slide would be caught somewhere between horrified and resigned, and then would pretend not to care.

Many Voices peers around her father's side and then steps forward, nodding to the buck and the acha, half his size: "I'm Many Voices." Just LOOK at that buck -- what a handsome specimen. Shall we go find his friend? The doe suddenly shakes her head, as if a fly has buzzed into one ear, and then frowns. "It's nice to meet you. I can't imagine how you dance in this sucking mud."
PostPosted: Mon Apr 09, 2012 9:08 pm

Acid only grins at the pretty doe, and lifts his hoof in a manner suggesting carelessness, though the beginning of his words are clipped and mocking. "'Practice makes perfect,' s'what my brother always says, and we practice enough that if we aren't perfect, we're like, really close, y'know?" He demonstrates a quick little step, hooves lifting and bouncing from the mud with barely any splashing, and the slop never reaches his ankle, despite the movement. He flourishes again--Acid likes the flourishes, he thinks they give an air of style to the steps, but Ice is so finicky about things that Acid is reduced to flourishing at random times, despite the utter ridiculousness--and winks at the doe. "S' a nice name, Many Voices." His grin takes a more flirtacious edge, despite his quiet wariness of her father.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. It's as Acid is finishing his impromptu performance that Ice clears the trees around their clearing, intending to speak with Twilight about the song they're to perform for some mystery visitor. He stops briefly to consider his brother's step and unseeing of their guests, calls out to the brighter buck. "You've finally got that down, then? It's about time, Acid. How are you coming with the rest of the choreography?" His brow is arched, though the pitch black of his coat makes it difficult to tell as he turns to question Twilight, "About that song, the one you brought back from the sands. Are you certain the phrasing is right? It seems rather--" His words are cut off as he notices their guests. "Oh. Hello."

Many Voices stops and stares for a moment before nodding, and the expression is almost curt: but she at least feigns politeness. The dark buck with his pitch-black coat is interesting, but she had been enjoying speaking to the green one. "Hello. I'm Many Voices -- this is my father," and she tosses her head over her shoulder to Walks Without Rhythm, who has been ignoring Acid's flirtation up until now.

Slide's voice cuts through the conversation: "And so will we see this dance you speak of?"
PostPosted: Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:05 pm

It's rare that Ice is thrown off his groove, but to be confronted with this almost-eagerness to see their troupe perform is not something he's used to. Many of the Swamp's denizens see the little group as a band of nutters, really, rather like whimsical children to be indulged but never taken seriously. "Oh, yes, of course. I'm Impenetrable Ice," he answers both golden Kimeti with blinking eyes. "Please allow us a few moments to set up." He nudges his brother--Acid is still staring rather obviously at the doe, leering, really--and says with fond exasperation, "Let's go set up. Twilight, are you ready to sing?" It's an unnecessary question, as there's never a moment the dainty Acha is not ready to sing at the drop of a leaf or splash of a fish.

The arrival of Ice snaps Twilight from his silence, and he clears his throat, smiling winningly at Slide and Many Voices. "Please, make yourselves comfortable. There are moss patches all over, if you'd like to rest on one. We'll be ready momentarily." Twilight nearly dashes through Ice in his rush to get to the mark he's made where he will begin his song while the brothers dance.

Perhaps all acha are daft. Slide looks about and then elects to stand, lashing his tail against his flanks -- though he looks at Acid for a moment, and those blue-on-blue eyes seem to bore into him like an earthworm through mud. It would perhaps not be wise to leer at this buck's daughter, for all that the daughter herself is enjoying the attention.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 10, 2012 11:48 am

Acid only fidgets a bit under the hot blue gaze he would swear is singeing his coat, his own bright yellow eyes widening as he turns a--hopefully--benign smile on the elder buck and moves back with Ice to prep for their dance.

Ice, having seen the little interaction and knowing his brother, only snorts and whispers, "If you want the doe, don't antagonize her father. And for Swamp's sake, stop leering. Now, mark." Ice taps his hoof, and the duo is off, swaying gently and hooves flashing and throats humming; Twilight raises his lighter voice and starts the song of the sand worms, ravenous beasts grown massive under the desert sands, waiting for an unwary Acha to wander through and be swallowed.

After the first verse, the Kimeti brothers are moving and twisting around each other, sinuous like snakes as their hooves form a heavy, thumping rhythm in the grassy, muddy clearing. Ice lends his deeper tones to Twilight's soaring ones, and Acid raises up, tall and bright to circle carefully on his hind legs, forelegs snapping like those of a doomed Acha under the unforgiving desert dun.

By the end of it, Slide is staring: hopefully in not a way that makes him appear daft, but in a way that suggests he has not ever heard anything like this. Nor did he expect the acha to sing (and perhaps write) a song about sandworms. For a moment Slide stands transfixed, blinking at the acha, until Many Voices nudges him -- none too subtly, Many Voices does not do subtle.

Slide shakes himself out of his weird trance-like state and smiles brilliantly at the acha. The entire time he had been listening, he stood as one in a trance; now he shakes himself, acting more youthful than he has in some time. "Did you write that?"

Many Voices snorts. "He's behaving like a colt. You did a good job."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 10, 2012 3:09 pm

Twilight's voice is bashful as he answers the query. "Well, yes. We don't really have songs about the sandworms, so I took one of the stories and crafted a melody for it, changed some of the phrasing and such." For an Acha of great pride, Twilight is amazing modest when Many Voices praises him, and her father reacts rather more exuberantly.

Ice isn't sure, but he thinks this new friend of their Acha's may have broken him; it's the most humble he's ever seen the buck.

Acid, panting, just grins at everyone. "Good, huh? That's high praise indeed, lovely Many Voices."

Delicately -- with an ease that seems out of character for her -- Many Voices slides behind her father, so that he stands in front of her, and off of one side. That grin of Acid's has become a bit alarming, since it never falters, never stops. If she really stopped to think about it, she'd decide she liked the attention .. but just not in front of her father. She looks him over, and then looks elsewhere: suddenly the acha becomes infinitely more interesting.

Slide nods. "There are stories I have heard -- perhaps I will tell you one, about how your desert was made. If you care to listen, of course." It is a long story, full of repetition, best told to little ones. "From the stories I have heard I gather that others have thought of what lives under the sand, but no one I have asked has dreamed about it."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 10, 2012 3:35 pm

"I'd love to hear them," Twilight assured him, tail swiping high over his back in delight. "I'd love to be able to craft more songs to spread around the swamp. Mostly we do Kimeti favorites, with interpretations. I've been meaning to find a Kiokote to ask about their stories, as well."

Acid's eyes dim a bit as the pretty doe hides behind her father, and his shoulders droop. She'd seemed amenable to his flirting, but maybe she isn't interested. He turns to Ice with a plea for help in his face, and Ice sighs. "Stop coming on so heavy. Especially in front of her father," the night-coated brother hisses. "It has been very nice meeting you," Ice calls to their guests, "and I look forward to speaking with you in the future. Please excuse me, though, as I've dances to work on." With a minimal bow to his audience, and a sharp nudge to his brother, Ice departs the clearing. He offers a quick wish to the Swampmother that Acid gets his demented flirting under control and doesn't incite either doe or father into murder, deserved as it may be.

Slide nods. "The kiokote sometimes make their way through the borderlands. As of late I've had a few visitors. I will send them your way," he says; his visitors aren't always welcome -- he thinks about the blonde stag, and the tortoise, and wrinkles his nose. The expression is brief. "It is an entirely selfish offer to help. I don't get much news in the borderlands; songs and stories are worth water," which is apparently a huge boon in the buck's estimation.

Many Voices smiles winningly at the black buck -- during a moment where her father is quite thoroughly preoccupied. It's a thanks for getting the other one to stop leering at her. The poor thing probably meant well, says the voice in her head, but he failed quite miserably in the execution, didn't he?

Many Voices, thinking about this, must agree.

Walks Without Rhythm clears his throat. "If you ever find yourself back that way -- stop by the cave. We will make room for you if we must, in return for songs."
