There was no possible way Malodore wasn't going to try poison-crafting on its first day - especially since it also involved brewing an antidote as well. The plague doctor was nearly beside itself with eagerness. Whether or not the Horsemen also in the apothecary area recognized this... well. Who could tell. At least one of them gave Malodore some basic instruction, but it seemed tinkering was the order of the day.

This was perfectly fine.

The plague doctor rubbed its hands together with anticipation and headed over to the first table to make its initial selections.

The spread of herbs was fascinating and also a bit overwhelming - while Malodore had taken a few botany classes, they had only focused on basic herbcraft, and many of the ingredients had been more esoteric harvests from the greenhouse. As the Cirurgien plague doctors did not use herbcraft in their own treatments, Malodore's personal knowledge was sadly lacking.

Still, it would do its best. First, it selected Mandragora Root to serve as the toxin, along with a peeling of Thyme to bolster the effect. For the last... hm. Maybe it ought to taste fair rather than foul? Everyone would suspect something bad-tasting was poison, would they not?

In deference to this logic, it picked Mint as its last ingredient.

Next was refining the poison. Malodore frowned and did its best, processing the mixture through the odd array of pipes, spigots, drip filters, and beakers. The arrangement was very unfamiliar, and what issued forth from the final spigot was a brown glop.

... Hrm. Well, it was probably still a poisonous brown glop.

((No change, poison score is still +3))

Malodore moved on to the selection of ingredients available for an antidote, peering curiously at the unusual items. Oh... many items were purportedly harvested from humans! Given that anything human tended to explode messily upon arrival in Halloween, this was a rare find indeed from the plague doctor's perspective.

It quickly picked up some human's tears, then a bit of Foxglove after pondering. But what to add for the third ingredient, hmm... it was so hard to choose...

Hmm. No, surely it had to be crushed skulls. It ground a bit of the coarse powder between two of its fingers, wondering if they were human skulls or just ordinary, dull skulls. It hoped they were human.

Now, time to purify...

Oh, dear, the antidote purification setup looked even more arcane than the previous one. Still, Malodore resolved to do its best. It passed its mixture over and through the flames, poking symbols and watching the flames change color and brightness.

When it was done, the mixture was clear, slightly tinted. Was this good or bad? It wasn't entirely sure.

Finally, it was time to administer. Malodore selected a mouse minipet out of deference to plague doctor legend, wishing it had Parassiti here. How she would have delighted to be used in such fascinating experiments!

Alas.

The poison was a bit too viscous to be injected, so instead it hoped the mint had done its job and placed a bit of the goop in a small dish for the mouse. Fortunately, the small creature ate it up, then sidled to one side to take a nap as Malodore watched it.

Spots of black began spreading over its coat right before the plague doctor's eyes - clearly the effect of the poison it had made. The mouse curled up a little tighter but made no other sound. Perhaps it was used to being poisoned? It probably ate arsenic for breakfast and liked it.

After ten minutes went by with no further alteration, Malodore poured out a bit of its antidote into a fresh dish. The mouse immediately began lapping it up, but there was no change in its coat. Even after half an hour of concerted staring, the creature was still as tainted as before.

A Horseman overseer scooped up the creature and injected it with something; immediately, the black began to vanish as if being eaten away from within. The mouse was returned once its fur was spotless once more.

Ah well. It was an excellent experiment. Malodore left in good spirits; any experiment was well worth doing, no matter what the result! That was the true nature of science.

Environmental Studies, Day 2

The instructor - or whatever he was - for Environmental Studies was strangely enthusiastic. Malodore allowed itself to be guided towards the odd glass boxes. It had not been expecting miniature landscapes, but apparently that was what it was going to get. How odd, yet intriguing...

The box held out to it was brown and green, containing grass so small and fine that it looked like fur, rippling in a tiny breeze. After briefly wondering how it was possible to have a breeze inside an enclosure, the plague doctor nodded to its guide. It was more than ready to get its experiment on.

Working on ecosystems couldn't be that different from working on people, right?

Malodore put down its glassed-in grasslands and peered at it. So the goal was to obtain some sort of growth, was it? It could make an attempt, at least. Perhaps an increase in light for photosynthesis?

It shifted the box around on the table a bit, trying to find a 'sweet spot' of increased light and production, but nothing happened.

Hrm. Perhaps a bit of FEAR? Malodore pressed its palms flat against the box and slid them down to concentrate on the soil on the bottom. It tried to radiate FEAR in there, like how it used to heal others through leeches in its childhood days...

Something stirred, and the Horseman instructor was at its side in an instant, pointing at a small pinprick of color. A flower? He seemed pleased, at least. Malodore nodded to itself, satisfied.

((4: What's that? Whatever you just did caused a tiny, colorful flower to sprout in your environment. The landscape is so small you can barely see it, but Ktur seems impressed. You earn one Horsemen Point.

Malodore tried to infuse a bit more FEAR into the soil, but it didn't feel like anything was happening. Maybe it had already accepted all the FEAR it could take?

Suddenly, a little bit of grass browned and withered. Malodore blinked. When did that happen? For that matter, why did that happen? It could see no indication.

Vexing.

Malodore shifted the box around again, wondering if perhaps the light was having an effect after all. There was a brief glare as the glass shifted, and then suddenly a bright flare from within the box.

Oh Jack. It was on fire.

The plague doctor watched in horror as flame swept angrily over the grass, burning itself out within a few seconds. What was left behind was speckles of green too vigorous to be touched, hardier plants that didn't care about fire... and that was about it. Oh dear.

((1: FIRE! Something catches fire inside your diorama. Try channeling a little bit of FEAR in there. It might help. Or maybe not. You lose 5 HP in desert and rainforest environments, 10 HP on the prairie, and none underwater, in the arctic, or on the volcano.

Malodore quickly moved the box again, out of the brief glare that had ignited the grass - but its movement was a little too jerky. A tiny tree toppled with a snap.

The little flower was dead now. Poor little flower. Malodore took an uneasy step away from the box. This wasn't going well.
