Vegetation Lab

For once there is no unfamiliar Famine clan face on the training field, simply a strangely disorganized layout of scattered tables and boxes, which look like they could have been scavenged from the garbage of the human world. And... A familiar face that may disappoint or even alarm the attending students.

Their very own Famine Heir, Cymbeline.

Good luck learning anything from this one!

Stage 1
Introduction

The bony ghoul begins discussing something in roundabout terms, often going on a tangent, sometimes pausing and gazing off into the distance... Crazy cackling is frequent.

Perhaps you should look in those boxes she seems to be gesturing to. Roll 1d6 to determine it's contents!

1. You have a glass foot stool, a bag of dirt, and a vial of... gross water.
2. You have a fish tank, some muddy bottom soil, and a tube of de-mineralizing serum!
3. You found a clear box, some dirt, and something you do not want to drink.
4. You found a bizarre helmet, some protective padding, and a strength potion.
5. You have an empty terrarium, dark earth, and just enough dirty water for a little stream.
6. YOUR CRYSTAL BALL IS WEIRD-SHAPED AND- a beanbag stand and magic wand?

Start tallying up your "learning" points! If you rolled 1-4, you get +1 point, and if you rolled 5, you get +3 points. If you rolled six... Cymbeline is wondering if you are the crazy one!

Stage 2
Setup

Now the heir is talking about plants. Unlike the half-mad babbling from the initial explanation, this is not insane rambling. This is science jargon! You still can't understand what she is talking about in between the simple words like "plants" and "weeds" and "pesticides", but you attempt to follow her example as she sets her own terrarium up.

It is more complicated than it looks, the 'glass' sides slide, fold, and rotate until the cube has morphed into an enclosed rectangular tank with two semi-separated compartments.

Roll a 6 sided die to figure out how well you did.

1. That isn't so b- Maybe this way... Erm... OKAY, your terrarium is set up, although it seems a little lopsided.
2. You set out to figure it out yourself. And after much fussing and an unhealthy SNAP, it appears... mostly right.
3. You aren't half bad at this whole Famine-technology-assemblage stuff! You are only 1/4 bad.
4. It only took you three tries, but your terrarium looks okay!
5. You seem to follow her example to the letter, maybe she's not a bad instructor after all!
6. You... cracked your box. Maybe she won't notice.

How well did you do? Take your "learning" points from the previous stage, and calculate your new total. If you rolled 1-4, you get +1 point, and if you rolled 5, you get +3 points. If you rolled six... Cross your fingers.

Stage 3
Selection

Cymbeline is now handing out bags... of seeds? And her ramblings have turned to a delightfully nonsensical spiel on the similarities and differences of humans and insects and students (which still might fall under the "insects" category) and finally, plants. She brings you the box, and expects you to select one brown bag and one tan bag.

Roll 2d6. The first number determines which tan bag you select. Apparently these are common and useful Human plants.

1. Oats
2. Sweet Corn
3. Asia Strawberries
4. Sugarcane
5. Cherry Tomatoes
6. Vanilla Bean

The second number is which brown bag you pick out. These are plants, weeds in particular, you might be familiar with. They are all FEAR-based varieties that are known for their ability to produce herbicidal toxins, or irritate the skin, or spread like wildfire and choke out other living species. None of them are very pleasant plants, to be sure. You might now be starting to understand what Cymbeline was getting at with all that crazy science babble.

1. Noxious Ivy
2. Hunchback Beggarweed
3. Strangling Knotweed
4. Fiery Spurge
5. Weregoose Grass
6. Bindweed

Stage 4
Evaluation

Now that you seem to have everything you need, you begin to set up your tank. It is all very self explanatory at this point. A bit of dirt in each of the semi-separated compartments, human seeds in one side, FEAR seeds in the other, and voila! Time to add the magic ingredient.

Following Cymbeline's wildly graceful example, you pour the small vial's fluid into the soil in each compartment. And then... BAM! Suddenly you have two fully grown plants. And in the time it takes to wonder how half the Famine clan is still as thin as a rake, you begin to notice a dark, misty substance leeching from the FEAR weeds into the healthy-looking human plant.

Cymbeline begins to walk between the tables, examining the terrariums.

For this section, you will have to compare your two plants on the scale below. This represents how compatible the selected FEAR weeds are with human plants. The closer they are together, the better the resulting hybrid!

Hunchback Beggarweed <-> Oats <-> Strangling Knotweed <-> Cherry Tomatoes <-> Weregoose Grass <-> Sweet Corn <-> Fiery Spurge <-> Asia Strawberries <-> Noxious Ivy <-> Vanilla Bean <-> Creeping Bindweed <-> Sugarcane <-> Hunchback Beggarweed

For example, if you have Strangling Knotweed, it is more compatible with either the Oats or the Cherry Tomatoes than it is with the Asia Strawberries. This can be represented by distance. The oats and tomatoes are only 1 place away. But the strawberries are five points away. (Notice the Hunchback Beggarweed is on both ends of the scale, it can be imagined like a circular scale after all.)

For a distance of 1, you get +3 "learning" point and pass the course!
For a distance of 3, you get +1 "learning" point and pass the course!
For a distance of 5, you fail the course. Oops. =(

It was one thing to view a portion of the intricate underground tunnels the Clan had, and something else to be on the training field for the class, which currently looked as though someone had taken used furniture, thrown it together, and then tossed in some boxes and trash for good measure. The smell wouldn't bother Mort, but the unsettling grin the Heir gave them upon entering the grounds made him swallow a bit, good cheer or not. Cymbeline: this was the one the Hunter ghoul had told him was off her rocker. While he was not one to give much credence toe the babbling of his torturer, one look was all it took the zomboil to realize that something wasn't quite . . . right with the Horseman.

Worse, the ramblings she gave, if punctuated cackling between every few sentences was called such, was hard to keep track of. To Mort it was like if someone had fried his brain, stuck a recording chip in it, and made him talk - mostly nonsense, dappled with brief moments of clarity, random rants, and any other thing that came to mind. It was when Cymbeline had paused for a longer time than usual that he decided it was the cue to grab a box and get to work.

"Mrrr . . ." Snatching a random one, he pulled it back to the group and peered inside: a footstool made of glass, a bag of something, and what looked like foul water. "Er. Hope will do mkay?" he murmured, opening the bag to note that its contents were simply dirt. Ho boil.

((+1: You have a glass foot stool, a bag of dirt, and a vial of... gross water. ))

Really, she was trying very hard to pay attention. Taryn had only met Cymbeline once, though, and felt like her initial impression had been pretty spot-on. The tangents were entirely nonsensical, and one could not be entirely certain what the subject even was. A sideways gesture was reassuring, though, and Taryn chose a random box to open.

...so, uh. This wasn't looking good.

"...I really hope I don't have to fight anything..." she mused, eying Mort's glass stool. How was that useful? Everyone else had gotten water and dirt!

Rafael wished they were back underground; it was too open and barren here. He followed after his new friends, and tried to pay attention as Cymbeline explained things. None of it made any sense. He kept shooting furtive sidelong glances at the others, wondering if he was just stupid or if this was all actually completely nonsensical.

Well...no point in arguing, anyway. The rat-boil made his way over to pick up his materials and was somewhat relieved at the contents: a clear box, a bag of dirt, and a vial of liquid. The way she was going on, he was half-certain the box would be full of stinging insects instead, so this was....both an improvement and a disappointment, really.

He swished the bottle around and gave it a good, curious sniff. It didn't seem very palatable, but it didn't seem like poison either. Then again, good poison wasn't supposed to seem like poison. Hm.

He set all of his materials down and looked up hopefully at the horseman, perking his ears forward in hopes of some more clarified instructions.

Taryn's supplies really did make him worry, as what else could he think of but a battle when she had a helm, protected padding, and a potion? It was like a LARP of D&H even . . . Rafe at least didn't look bad off, which was good; he was kinda worried for the lil' guy after their scare talk with Herryk back at the auditorium.

Mort listened as best he could, finding that though he was not always able to understand what Cymbeline was saying, for the better part he was pretty sure he got what she was talking about. "Kay. If need help, follow so . . ." With a little fornw he began to manipulate his footstool until it made an appropriately shaped box, which he threw some of the dirt and foul water in. Proud of himself, he looked to see how his companions did. Rafe he could be concerned for, but Taryn he had full confidence in - after all, she was the best leader evar! He smiled expectantly at the two of them.

Taryn looked fairly startled when Cymbeline completely changed tactics, suddenly armed in her protective gear and having stashed her potion. However, she was using words that Taryn... couldn't understand. Indeed, the chimera thought she might be making them up. She was doing well recreating the glass box until her helmet fell off of her relatively tiny head and left a large crack in the terrarium ********, maybe they wouldn't need to fill it with water.

Rafe glanced at Mort, who seemed to be competently assembling a box into...well, a box. Then he glanced at Taryn, who seemed to be.....not doing so well.

"Um..." He started to comment, then decided to just let it go. Maybe he didn't know what he was talking about anyway, and Taryn was starting to look a little stressed-out. He'd best keep his head down and not try to help. Mort could help! Mort knew what was going on, right?

Fortunately, he managed to figure his project out. It didn't look quite as good as Mort's and Cymbeline's, but it looked good enough for his tastes.

His smile fell at Taryn's stressed expression, wishing he could say something to try and have her calm down, but Cymbeline cut him off before he could so much as compliment either of them. Okay, seeds . . . Well Mort wasn't picky, so he simply grabbed two bags at random to plant. Everything seemed to be going alright as the plants grew . . .

. . . Only neither of them were melding essences. Heck, they were practically ignoring each other. Cymbeline barely gave him a passing look, but she didn't need to: Mort's look of disappointment was enough to break whatever cheery streak he had going, even if it was only a temporary crack. "Mrrr . . . N-No good with plants n'way," he mumbled, setting the failed terrarium down.

Oh, finally! Something she had some faith in! Having removed her helmet entirely and tossed it aside, the ghoul approached the bags and selected two that seemed familiar. When in doubt, go with what you know! She divvied up the dirt equally and planted the seeds at one-knuckle depths. The fluid that sprouted the plants was added last, and Taryn watched the progress. Please, please, she couldn't fail for a cracked terrarium...

Hah!

The hybrid that began to sprout may not be particularly deadly, but it was dangerous. The roots began to seek out the cracks and-- aha! Approval from the professor, that was all she could have asked for.

"Hey, how did--!"

...their plants were either killing or ignoring each other. Oh my...

"You're going to beat me up in all the other trials, give me this one," she smiled.

Rafe was feeling pretty good about himself. He picked out two bags of seeds and even recognized one of them before he planted it, which seemed like an encouraging sign. He carefully planted it out, watching Mort and trying to listen to Cymbeline's instructions, and then poured over the liquid...

...and BAM! Plants! That was exciting!

He was absolutely thrilled with himself for about 2.5 seconds before he realized that growing the plants wasn't really the point. The plants had to mingle...and his plants were absolutely not interested in mingling. At all. Not one tiny bit.

Looking crestfallen, he glanced over nervously at Mort. "I, uh....think we failed?" He said, and then stared at Taryn's terrarium. Yeesh, what were the odds? Maybe he should have cracked his......

DAY 3

Foraging

Several large, gnarled trees grow on the surface above the caves of Famine, forming a shady canopy of leaves. The female horseman that met you out here looks as old and gnarled as the trees, what little of her can be seen under layers of sand-colored robes.

“It is a special season now! We gather special fruit. Very prized. Today you must pick it.” She held out a large, poisonous “BUT! Many hidden dangers above us. Flying is no good. Trees here do not want to be picked from so easily.”

“This fruit, she grows fast, ripens with FEAR. Pick her too soon, she is poisonous, stomach will ache. No good.” The old woman pantomimed as she spoke. “Wait too long, she is too heavy, falls to the ground, dissipates. No fruit.”

There is a brief pause before the horseman herds you to the base of a tree. “Waiting for what, then? Up the tree! Go!”

Quote:
Your student starts off with a total of 4 rounds that it takes to make it up the tree. Different rolls will add or subtract from that number as you go, determining if your student successfully picks ripe fruit. Your goal is not to be too slow OR too fast – adding or subtracting too many rounds from your total can lead to failure. There is also a slim chance of complete failure.
In each post, include your total as you go. When you start, the number is always 4.

Quote:
ROLL 1

Roll 1d4:
1 - The branch you stepped on breaks. Regain your footing, +1 round
2 - Turns out you're kind of allergic to this plant; you can't stop sneezing. +1 round
3 - Today must be your lucky day. Climbing is easy! -1 round
4 - A gust of wind tosses you up the tree! -1 round

Quote:
ROLL 2

Roll 1d4:
1 - Your convenient handhold turns out to be the entrance to an ant's nest, and they're not happy. +1 round
2 - You find a convenient rope ladder shortcut. -1 round
3 - BEEEEEEEEEES! +1 round
4 - A bird tries to carry you off, but ends up dropping you on a higher branch. -1 round

ROLL 3
Roll 1d4:
1 - You are bombarded by a hail of acorns. Take cover, +1 round
2 - Carnivorous flowers n** at your feet, inspiring you to move quickly. -1 round
3 - You swing to a higher branch on a vine. -1 round
4 - Your struggling shakes a bunch of spiders out of the leaves - onto your head. GET THEM OFF, +1 round

ROLL 4

Roll 1d4:
1 - You take a leap of faith, which pays off. -1 round
2 - You don't look down. -1 round
3 - You look down. +1 round

...climb a tree? Taryn looked down at her digitigrade, hooved legs and blinked hard. Alright, this... would be interesting. She looped her legs around the trunk, locking her knees, and began to shimmy slowly up the trunk. This horsewoman seemed someone to respect, so she had damned better do well. While the ghoul's upper-body strength was not the best, she appeared to be doing pretty well with her padlocked legs.

"YAAAAAAAUGH!"

It was a startled yell that Mort was bound to recognize. Taryn had reached up into a knot to pull herself up, and instead received dozens of tiny bites to the fingers. Ow, ow, ow! She smacked the ants that had emerged, smashing a few, and then reached higher to pull herself up with a branch. Come on--!

There was a reason Taryn had always hated phys ed. She had never been all that strong. She hadn't really liked the rope climb either, but that vine there looks pretty handy.

Oh, look! Maybe she could-- aha! Using the vine as a swing, the ghoul managed to reach a higher branch on the other side of the tree. This was going well!

It was terrible how much he wanted to show off his new brain to his friends, but the middle of class was not the place to do it. No, he'd show them later - as part of his victory dance! After listening to the older woman, the zomboil nodded, clapped his hands, and rubbed them together expectantly. Alright, trees. Trees were plants, but maybe not the kind that would hate him . . .

Though the wind happily blew by not long as he he began clawing his way up, pushing him with more gusto than he would have wanted.

This post is brought to you by lame puns.
