User ImageThe cafe/bakery down the street from the school was quite during the afternoon lull. A few olders students who had more free time lounged around having coffee while some older patrons enjoyed some fresh made sweets. One sent her compliments to the baker. Said baker was currently hard at work making yet another mouthwatering creation. Floor was on her face, her apron was stained with chocolate, and her long hair was up in a chef's hat to keep it out of the foor.

Scentana had never been so happy since leaving home. The smell of fresh bread surrounded her and the heat of the oven made her brow shiny with sweat. The young skunk mononoke had quickly looked for a job upon arriving at the city. In her family you did not sit idle, even if she would be doing a great deal of school work. She followed her nose and quickly found the first cafe/bakery near the school. While they han't intially been looking for help the young girl's knowledge highly impressed them. So they hired her to be a baker, as the cooking would require hours she couldn't work.

Right now the mononoke was making a lovely dark chocolate cake. It was almost done! She took a deep breath as she opened the oven door, loving the sweet yet spicy aroma of the dark chocolate. Putting on her gloves she removed the cake and set it on an open window sill to cool while she began preparing the frosting. She quickly set about melting the chocolate and mixing all the ingredients for fresh made dark chocolate frosting. She also got out some fresh strawberries to decorate the top.

User ImageIt was a positively boring day. Not a single thing going on. Rosel hadn’t had a heart in days, so she was hungry in both respects. Wandering around the city, there seemed to be dozens of families out, all enjoying the nice weather. Mommys and daddys escorting their pack of children through the crowds of people just like them. Well, not all like them. A smile twitched at her lips and she gave a passing child an evil look. His lollipop stopped halfway to his mouth and he looked at her in awe as his mother obliviously dragged him by.

Speaking of lollipops, if she couldn’t do something evil, she could at least make up for it with something decadent. A breeze kicked up and brought her the scent of chocolate from the bakery on the corner. She licked her lips as she strutted over; now that certainly fit the bill.

Looking in from the door, there weren’t too many people inside, but enough to make her briefly second guess her indulgence. A waft of chocolate met her nose and quite effectively made the decision for her. Stepping inside, it was close quarters, and much more cozy than her usual haunts, but it smelled absolutely divine. Rosel discreetly inhaled the heavenly scent of sweet chocolate before taking a seat at the bar.

She gave her usual inconspicuous look-about before realizing that there was no way she was getting a heart out of anyone in here. All students and sticky children milling about. Crossing her legs, she bounced a foot as she swiped up a menu.

Dark chocolate cake?

The words stood out like a beacon of deliciousness in a gray world, and a wide grin spread. Who cared if she hadn’t had a heart in days, they had dark chocolate cake.

Hopping off stool, she dodged running kids to the display case, and searched the shelves. After a few moments, she straightened again, disappointed. The dark chocolate cake plate was empty. Just her luck that her favorite’s out. But she could swear that she could still smell it…

Raising her hand to a young witch behind the counter, Rosel cleared her throat. ”Ahem… Is there any more of the dark chocolate cake?”

When Rosel had entered a bell rung from the door earning her a good morning from the general staff. But otherwise no one else noticed her entrance. The young witch looked behind her as a blonde customer asked about the dark chocolate cake. The witch was really young, very wet behind the ears obviously. Or she just had no real concentration and had chosen to run her family's bakery over being a full time witch. She didn't notice the glowing green eyes as she set down a stack of plates and glanced into the display case.

"Ah it seems we are out but let me ask our little baker," she smiled with a nod and peeked around a door, "Scentana? Do we have any more Dark Chocolate Cake? A customer is asking."

"Oh!" the skunk mononoke looked around quickly and came out of the kitchen. Her deep purple eyes looked to the daughter of her employer as she pointed out said customer. She looked to the woman standing there and put on her best customer friendly smile. "I have just made a fresh one. I'm making the icing now if you are willing to wait a few more minutes. You can have the first piece!"

She quickly disappeared back into the kitchen. Wow now she had to make sure it was absolutely perfect! She tasted her icing, it was wonderfully good. She iced the top of one layer of the cake; it had come out of the oven a few minutes before the second. Then she took the now cooled second layer and placed it on top. The icing sealed the two into a decedant chocolate delight as she evenly smoothed it out. She finshed icing the entire cake then drizzled a bit of darker colored chocolate across the top. Finally she added the fresh strawberries, the pointy ends all facing towards the middle.

She carefully carried the cake out and placed it on a table. Taking a large knife she sliced a good piece with a strawberry on top and placed it on a plate. She quickly put the rest back into the display case and took the plate to the customer. "One slice of Dark Chcolate Cake, freshly made."

Rosel minutely lifted an eyebrow at the ‘little baker’ comment. The skunk mononoke that came out to check the display was obviously older than the girl at the checkout. Oh well, maybe there were some inner-bakery dynamics going on, didn’t bother her one bit. But a fresh piece of cake? Score. She winked exaggeratedly at the mononoke. ”Thank you, sweetheart. You take your time.” The baker went back in the kitchen, Rosel went back to her stool, and the counter-girl went…somewhere.

And Rosel waited.

And waited.

She absently started bouncing her heel again, eyes on the door to the back. Any minute now. So what if patience wasn’t one of her strongest points? The edge of her heel started rhythmically tapping the metal of the chair legs. Behind her, a child started tapping her spoon on the table in time with the ‘tink’s of her heel. In the curved mirror above the cash register, Rosel watched the bushy-haired mother attempt to carry on a conversation as the child gradually got louder. The child, a vaguely feminine riot of chestnut curls and sticky skin, noticed Rosel watching her in the mirror and grinned wildly, the tapping quickly evolving into metalling banging.

Suddenly the mother whipped around and snatched the spoon from her daughter’s hand, swinging immediately to glare at Rosel’s back. Resolutely ignoring the mother’s glares from the mirror, Rosel kept her poker face up until the door to the kitchen suddenly swept open, effectively stopping her own tapping. The draft of dark chocolate nearly made her drool and all thought of the tapping child was driven from her mind. The mononoke set the cake down and carefully cut a piece out. Rosel silently swore sparky vengeance upon anyone who got that piece before she did.

At long last, the cake was in front of her. It suddenly seemed like ages since she’d had dark chocolate, even though she was pretty sure it was only last Friday.

”Thank you!” She tried not to be too loud and give away her sudden starvation, but it was nearly too much. ”It smells divine, dear. With fracturing self-control, she picked up the fork, carved off a piece small enough to be polite, and took her first bite.

Thankfully Scentana was able to avoid the sudden drumming session, though the owner's daughter had a similar look on her face as the mother. All the mononoke was concerned about was making sure her creations were perfect. Several customers had eyed the cake as she had brought it out but she was determined to get this piece to the first customer who had asked. As soon as she walked away with the piece several other patrons immediately asked for a piece from the young girl behind the counter.

From the look on the customer's face she was definately looking forward to eating the cake. Sin couldn't wait to see her happy face once she tried it. She hadn't been experimental with this one, merely making it as decedant as it was suppose to be with just a bit of fruity sweetness due to the strawberries.

"I'm glad the scent is pleasing, but the taste will be even better!" she grinned and waited for confirmation from the blonde witch. Smell was all important to the skunk girl, which seemed rather appropriate considering her abilities. But to her, smells made things taste better; made a memory more pleasurable; even changed something bad to something good. All of her potions had scents, partly to tell them apart but also to add to their effects.

The woman was so pretty and her clothes were obviously from the upper class district. Sin felt a little awkward around her, having come from a poor family with many children to feed. Not that she wanted to be rich and have all the sparkly things she could contain. The most money she spent on anything was reserved for her bottle collection.

"Is it to your liking, M'lady?" she said once the woman had chewed and swallowed the first bite.

Ah, pure bliss. Rosel closed her eyes, and for one instant, the noisy café disappeared and all that existed was the cake. Moist, but not too moist. Sweet, but with just enough of that tart that made dark chocolate king among all sweets. She simply must get fresh cake more often, the warmth of the oven lingered and only served to heighten the taste. Such a sweet, lovely cake it was.

One word popped her out of her reverie.

”M’Lady?” Her eyes snapped open as she repeated the title incredulously. How oddly…respectable. Not even the bums she snacked on in the lowest bars called her that. ”The cake? Yea, it’s great… Listen, just call me Rosel.” She flashed a brilliant smile and hoped the baker didn’t do it again. Talk like that was…unnerving.

Scentana watched as the customer seemed to greatly enjoy the cake. People who had a taste for sweets always seemed to have a version of the food coma before they even finished eating. But she loved it all, seeing the happiness she gave with her creations. Her parents had always told her cooking was an art and there were people who adored their creations just as much as any painting or scuplture.

The woman seemed to come out of her reverie and look at her after she spoke. Had she said something wrong? Normally her lack of sophistication made social comments a rather embarressing matter. She was a simple girl, raised with a simple mindset. She thought she had been polite. But the woman obiviously prefered a more familair tone.

"Of course Ms. Rosel. Um...I have to call you miss if thats ok. My boss will skin my tail if I don't," she pressed to fingers together and blushed a bit. She had to still be polite to customers but still follow their wishes. Her little ears went back, giving her the cutest look.

"But I am glad you like it. I make a fresh one every few days. I go to school so I can't be here all the time. So if you would ever like more just check back," she nodded.

Rosel tilted her head and studied the witchling. How cute to be so nervous over such a small thing. There was a time where she would have eaten such a cute thing alive, but not anymore. Well, not recently. That week. There was that one witchling in Clarus Arbor… This cake was making her think she was soft. She absently took another bite and wondered if that was so bad.

”Skin your tail? What a miserable person.” Not that she hadn’t done worse herself… ”You tell him, her, or whatever that your tail is to remain intact. Just think…all that fur! It’d get in the cakes.” She wrinkled her nose in good humor as she took another bite, obviously joking.

”And you’re only in school? Oh, don’t I feel old…”

Scentana giggled softly as the woman made the joke. Oh she remembered the first time there had been fur in the cakes. The boss had almost exploded. But Sin took great care of her fur now and no more furry cupcakes unless they were covered in coconut. "I will tell him so, miss."

Feel old? The woman hardly looked old, in fact she looked quite young to Sin. She beautiful hair and her fancy clothing all seemed to make her a more proper lady. Perhaps it was her niavety but she imagined Miss Rosel to be a very well off lady. However very few of those came into their shop, as they were not in the upper class part of the market. Not that she minded, she prefered those down to earth. They were usually much kinder and had better taste in food.

The mononoke gave the woman a soft smile, "Yes, Miss. I have not been in school long but I couldn't sit around once my homework was over. So I got a job here, baking is my family's business."
