It was of course an April Fools joke, though more a treat than a trick. Lots of people died from happiness a little last night when it came on. I honestly doubted they would show DBZ, much less anything they ended up showing that night. It was quite the block of nostalgic fun though and a lot of people stayed up to watch it, tweet about it, and tell their friends "TURN TO CARTOON NETWORK RIGHT NOW!"
I've seen some people today try to reason that this was a test, they couldn't possibly have put this much effort into it without trying to see if it could work every week. Some people think it makes sense given how Saturday nights on Adult Swim have been suffering and this could be a great way to kick it back into shape. I'm a pessimist, so my approach is that this was a one time only deal. I'd like to be wrong here, but Toonami seems like something that is long dead and we only saw a revival for one night only.
Of course, Adult Swim has a habit of redoing it's pranks for this holiday more than once. Toonami even opened up by pretending to be the opening credits for The Room since Adult Swim played it for several years now. This makes me think that if it doesn't return in any other form, we might see Toonami night every year for April Fools Day at least for the next few years which would be good enough for some fans.
I tend to agree. I was marking out about it too and I didn't even have cable back in the day.
I haven't taken the pessimist or the optimist approach yet, but I can see what both sides are coming from. Though I tend to lean more on the former. But if Toonami becomes a more permeant thing I wouldn't really mind. Though it may be a little past it's time.
I was freaking about that when I watching it, I've seen the Nostalgia Critic's review. It was torture enough.
