There is no visual indicator, no library-esque sign of "QUIET, PLEASE", but it's easy to get the idea upon entering the room that it would be in your best interest speak in reverently hushed whispers...if at all. The room is generally devoid of any kind of decor or excess, with great focus on practicality and tradition. There is a slight chill to the air, the scent of stone and well-worked metal hanging in the air. One could assume that it comes from the materials used to construct the building - it all seems simple, yet sturdy and effective.

The floor dips down into the stone with a drop roughly a foot in length, separating the apparent area for the instructor from the area for the students. The former is smaller, a set of smaller stone steps leading up towards a meticulously organized platform. There is no desk or podium, only a space large enough for the instructor to move freely in a contained circle, and what appears to be some sort of case. It is completely covered with a dark, velvet cloth, and looks like it would be best to avoid.

On the far side of the room, accessed by stepping down into the 'pit', are rows of seating, carved from the same stone as everything else in the room. They're set up similar to theatrical/bleacher seats, staggered to allow everyone a perfect view of the instructor in front of them. Though you should have no issues of obstruction in any seat, it seems that the most practical of seating positions might be near the front; after all, jewelcrafting is full of intricacies and details.

It's wholly uncomfortable, but covers all of the essentials, with plenty of space to spare.

The instructor walked into the room without much fanfare, taking her place at the front of the room without as much as a word or a nod of acknowledgement. She waited for all of the students to settle down, mentally counting off the number of attendees, a hint of a frown on her lips as she began.

"Greetings, and welcome to the Isle. I trust that you are adapting easily thus far." Her greeting was transparently disingenuous, but she didn't seem to care. "You may address me as Ylaria. Please do not speak out of turn, and do only as you are instructed during the duration of this course. Time is too precious a resource to waste."

She spoke slowly and eloquently, her voice strong and unwavering; it was difficult to tell if she was doing so because it came naturally when attempting to project to a crowd, or if she'd slowed her typical speech amidst doubting the intelligence of the gathered students. Perhaps a little bit of both. As she moved to remove the velvet from the case, it was all very proper and deliberate, a ritual dance as she pinched the fabric in the middle and effortlessly folded it into a perfect cloth square. Quietly, she placed it on a nearby shelf, and returned her attention to the group.

"You are here to learn both the basics and the importance of jewelcrafting. Many of you likely share the simplest opinion in regards to gems and jewelry: beautiful accessories meant to simply complement one's visual appearance. Though this is true, of course," pausing, she watched them stiffly, lips pulled into a tight, thin expression of indifference. "They serve a greater purpose."

Cold eyes surveyed the room. "Have I made myself clear thus far?"

"We will start at the beginning, so none of this should be too difficult to understand. In our culture, jewelcrafting is used as a method of ritual. As you may have noticed, those of our clan wear gem-inclusive jewelry as proof of our devotion." Just in case one of the students hadn't realized this, she spread her arms to display all that she was wearing, before continuing on. "The gems that you will encounter during your stay here are not like the ones you know - and not like the gems you might find in the human world." She couldn't suppress a tiny chuckle that bubbled up at even the mere thought of that. "Our gems are sustained through FEAR. As such, they hold properties unique to each gem...which is why you may notice certain gems embedded within our monuments, and others encrusted within our weapons. I will explain more about each of these properties and their importance in ritual momentarily."

She kneeled to remove a latched box from the space beneath the jewelry case, placed it on top, and opened it towards the students.

"You will each receive one of these...ah...'kits'. Included within are an appropriately cut segment of wire made of precious metal, basic schematics for a jewelry type, and a tool to use when forming the shape of your piece. Should you find this task difficult, please raise your hand for my attention."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Each student will be handed a small, crushed-velvet pouch including a small set of instructions and the materials needed to make the piece of jewelry that will eventually set their stone. The options are randomized, and will need to be rolled for! If you would like to ICly trade your jewelry kit for another type, you are welcome to try and find someone willing to trade. After working this out with the other player, please have one of the two of you contact me via PM. You can then rp out the swap, and start their assignment. If your student has an IC reason that they need to swap (i.e. they are incapable of wearing the piece of jewelry that they will be making) and you can't find someone to trade with, please contact me via PM or quote me for Ylaria's attention, and I'll work to accommodate your student.

For the assignment, you will need to roll 2d6. The first dice will determine the metal that is included in your kit, and the second dice will determine the type of jewelry that they will be tasked in creating. Just match the numbers to the corresponding selection, and rp your student working on (and completing) their piece.

Dice 1

1: Silver Wire
2: Gold Wire
3: Copper Wire
4: Silver Wire
5: Gold Wire
6: Copper Wire

Dice 2

1: Necklace
2: Ring
3: Bracelet
4: Brooch
5. Hairpin
6. Armlet

When all of the students had gathered once more, Ylaria wasted no time with pleasantries. The only greeting that they received was a nod, just before she dove right into her lesson.

"As you may recall from our discussion yesterday, we use jewelcrafting and the items we produce in rituals and offerings. They hold symbolic value, but are made more valuable by the properties that their FEAR-dependent formation creates. Each type of gem has a unique property, reflected by the comparable appearances they share with the gems with which you are likely already familiar. We will be working with a selection of five gems, lest it be too overwhelming to memorize the properties of more."

The large jewelry case was finally opened, and five amulets made of silver, all matching save for the gem set within, were carefully placed atop it. She indicated the relevant gem each time she spoke of it by holding her palms outward in its direction.

"Diamond holds the property of protection. This is why you will see it used frequently - but sparingly, as excess is unnecessary - in armor and fortifications. Consider it...an extra bit of FEAR shield. Ruby holds the property of devotion. This is typically used in ornamental and sacrificial jewelry, but may also be found in monuments or icons. Emerald holds the property of Health. It is one of the more popular gems used in metalworking and weapon forging, serving as a bit of a refresher. Sapphire holds the property of strength. As such a versatile gem, you will find it used in many things here on the island. It, too, serves weapons well. Finally, Amethyst holds the property of temperance. This is used in many of our temples, and adorns the priestesses that some of you may have already met."

"All of the gems that you encounter on this island will have these properties. Should you find yourself curious about the FEAR properties of gems encountered elsewhere..." She paused to both glance at Phos and pick up a ruby amulet, which she cradled in her palm. "Many of you may have already learned through your studies that FEAR is something one can sense. This holds true for the FEAR imbued within gems, as well. FEAR gems don't lose their properties if you are incapable of sensing them, however," Those sitting closer to the front would hear her mutter 'thankfully' under her breath, eyes scanning the room full of students. "So there is no need to worry about that when you learn your future task."

Another latched box was pulled from beneath the jewelry case. She opened it but did not acknowledge the contents, offering it instead to one of the students sitting nearby.

"Send this around. Each of you will need to collect gems to set into the things that you made during our previous session. Please see to it that each gem is secure. You don't want to lose them."

A box filled to the brim with small, weakly FEAR-imbued gems is passed around from student to student. There are plenty to go around, so don't worry about not getting the gems that you want! Your student will need to select the number of gems that they roll, and set them into the piece that they have already crafted. Extra bits of wire have been added to each of the pouches to ensure that the gems can be secured to the gewelry, even if consideration was not made for setting gems.

You can consult her lecture for specifics on the gem properties, or follow this tl;dr cheat sheet if you have read it once and don't want to skim over again:

Gem Properties:

Diamond: Protection
Ruby: Devotion
Emerald: Health
Sapphire: Strength
Amethyst: Temperance

But they can't just go picking handfuls of gems all willynilly! It's not like Ylaria is going to let them have all the power.

To determine the maximum number of gems that your student is able to take, roll 1d4. The number you get is the max number of gems. Your student is able to select less than this, of course, for aesthetic purposes or any other IC reason you can come up with.

After your student selects the gems and sets them in the piece, you will need to roll to see how successful your attempt was. Roll 2d6 and keep this number in mind for tomorrow's assignment.

These are all SMALL GEMS, so don't roleplay your student picking out something the size of their head. They are all roughly this size, give or take.

With the created jewelry returned to their respective owners, Ylaria began. She did not meet the gaze of any of the students today, busying herself with some sort of preparations: securing items on the shelves, replacing the cover on the jewelry case, closing the door.

"We have discussed gem properties, set them into metal, and have hopefully gained an understanding of the importance these precious stones hold. Should you feel that your understanding of their capabilities is a bit lacking, I will do my best to rectify that in today's lesson. You will be participating in a hands-on activity. Please put on your jewelry at this time"

As she waited for the class to do so, a third latched box was removed from the space beneath the case, this one noticeably stained a bit darker than the rest. Some of the students might have noticed that it seemed to be moving, almost vibrating beneath her touch, but it might have just been a trick of the lighting.

"Don't be afraid," she cautioned. "You have your jewelry to aid you, and I will step in should you have any difficulty."

With that, she opened the box, sending forth a torrent of little shades. Their appearance was not unlike the vague, ever-flickering shape of the shades that some of the students might have encountered in their training exercises. The creatures grew to stand a few feet tall as they approached the students, each shade singling out only one from the group.

STRIFE!

Each shade beings with 25 HP, and does a set number of 5 damage each turn. You will roll your regular attacks (2d6, 2d8, etc. minus 6 for your total damage), but will alter your battle depending on both the gems you chose during yesterday's class and the roll of effectiveness from yesterday's class (the 2d6 number). Remember that natural abilities and FEAR attacks are not allowed. If you have any difficulty (i.e. finding yourself completely unlucky with dice rolls and in danger of losing consciousness), please quote me or PM me and Ylaria will intervene.

Gem Effects:

Diamond: Take 3 damage each turn instead of 5.
Ruby: Pacify the shade for one turn, essentially charming it to be your ally, and take no damage for that turn. You may still attack it during this turn.
Emerald: Roll 1d4 and heal yourself or an ally for the resulting amount.
Sapphire: Do not subtract 6 from your attack roll for one turn.
Amethyst: Take 4 damage each turn instead of 5, and add 1 to your total damage each turn.

Yesterday's effectiveness roll will determine how many effects you can combine and use. If you quoted me and asked Ylaria a question about your jewelry, you can add 1 to your effectiveness roll. Please keep in mind that you cannot combine effects of gems you don't have: if your 1d4 result was , for instance, you can only use a maximum of 2, and so on.

Effectiveness

1-4: 1 gem effect
5-8: 2 gem effects
9-11: 3 gem effects
12: 4 gem effects

Edited clarification notes:
Y1/Quest students have 30 HP, Y2 40 HP, so on!
Y1/Quest students roll 2d6, Y2 2d8, so on!
Constant gem effects (like diamond or amethyst) that are used every turn can be used in the same turn as a one-time-use effect.

The expression that Ylaria greeted her class with on the final day had dramatically softened since the first. She might have begun growing attached to them...or might have realized that they were far more fragile than she'd previously assumed. Tiny little gems that were useful in their own way, but still needed undivided attention towards encouraging their growth, lest they decide to stubbornly remain minuscule scrap jewels. It made perfect sense to her, at least.

"I understand that our previous session may have been difficult for some. I hope that each of you has restored yourselves. My greater hope, however, is that you still value the gifts bestowed upon you by the jewelry you wore. If in doubt...can any of you fathom a battle without their enhancements?"

She gave them a moment's pause to consider this.

"Though this may seem difficult to comprehend to a guest of our culture, the physical importance of gems and jewelcrafting fall second to their more prominent use. Some of you may have encountered priestesses during your stay here. The role of priestess is a great honor - as messengers of the word of Death, only a select few are chosen for the role. The residents of this island all direct their offerings towards the priestesses in hopes of receiving their blessings and proper guidance. As you are all temporary residents, I present you with the opportunity to offer your crafted jewelry as a sacrifice. Your sacrifices, once offered to the priestess, will be taken to The Sanctuary of the Departed, where the FEAR of the dead and dying is harvested and returned. Our ancestors are reborn to strengthen us - and we thank them graciously endlessly in both prayer and tradition." She stepped aside to open the door, solemnly bowing as a veiled priestess silently entered the room.

"I urge you to be reverent, regardless of the decision that you make." It sounded a bit like a threat. Ylaria stood between the priestess and the jewelry case, hands folded over her heart, and nodded for the students to proceed.

The priestess stood tall, holding a gold offering plate in front of her.

The only assignment required for today is to roleplay your student's choice to either offer their jewelry or keep it! You will receive no IC effects for offering it (other than some Death Clan kudos and a blessing), but your student is allowed to ICly keep the jewelry that they made if they opt to keep it. Please note that the gems they used are not imbued with enough extra FEAR to offer anything other than cosmetic value from this point on! Today is also the time to ask any further questions you might have about jewelcrafting and its importance to the Death Clan. Ylaria may entertain a question or two about her crafting duties/herself, but doesn't think that any such questions are really worth asking.

As an optional assignment, your student can opt to revisit the shades and get some revenge. After either offering or declining to offer their jewelry, they can approach the jewelry case and take one of the wooden boxes lined up on top AND a piece of jewelry with a larger gem. This piece of jewelry cannot be offered or kept, and must be returned before leaving for the day.

Just assume that the jewelry your student selects is identical to the one that they crafted (both gem types and effectiveness), just larger/stronger!

Each shade begins with 20 HP, and does a set number of 5 damage each turn. You will roll your regular attacks (2d6, 2d8, etc. minus 6 for your total damage), but will alter your battle depending on both the gems you used during yesterday's class and the effectiveness from yesterday's class (the 2d6 number). Remember that natural abilities and FEAR attacks are not allowed. If you have any difficulty (i.e. finding yourself completely unlucky with dice rolls and in danger of losing consciousness), please quote me or PM me and Ylaria will intervene.

Increased Gem Effects:

Diamond: Take 1 damage each turn instead of 5.
Ruby: Pacify the shade for 3 turns, essentially charming it to be your ally, and take no damage for those turns. You may still attack it during those turns.
Emerald: Roll 1d8 and heal yourself or an ally for the resulting amount.
Sapphire: Do not subtract 6 from your attack roll for 3 turns.
Amethyst: Take 2 damage each turn instead of 5, and add 4 to your total damage each turn.

Kettil had meandered into class and settled in and let Endzela end up upon his lap so that she would not be in the way of any student that ended up behind him or bother any student next to him on either side. When class seemed to begin in a moment or two after everyone seemed to have settled he was rather thankful for it - it meant he got into less trouble that way.

He soaked in the words and the view of what the instructor showed them thus far kind of tilting his head to the side in curiosity and his mind filling with thought. If they are important to the Horseman in questioned he couldn't help but wonder something even while he took a pouch in which the kit was nestled in with the tool, wire, and schematics.

The boil stared at what he was given gnawing a bit as he let Endzela peek into the pouch as well, "A ring, eh? I am sure I could manage that much, right?" He muttered down at the Familiar as she observed the selection.

"...Seems foolproof enough for you, my Fool." Endzela chimed cheerfully.

He stared down at the Owl, "Thanks for your vote of confidence," he said dryly and then waited to see what others got.

Lumi felt a little out of breath as she rushed in to the class room. Her relief of being on time was short lived as she heard the instructor explain the jewel crafting and powers that were attached to the jewels. Gems they could hold fear...she thought back to her time in the cavern, 'they could also heal' she thought to her self.

Watching the instructor walk the lanes of the class handing out small velvety pouches. She took hers and gently laid it in her lap. Looking down at the small pouch she winced slightly worried about breaking or ripping the contents. Slowly she opened the pouch to find a flash of sliver staring up at her.

"well...at least the metal is right."

She said very quietly, pulling at the paper she frowned a little as she fingered her fox bead. This might not work, she thought to herself as she looked around hoping someone near her would be able to trade with her.

The room was plain, but fitting, and Myr found a seat in the second row, close enough to the front that he felt that he would be able to see everything perfectly, yet not quite out there. The seat wasn't comfortable, and he found himself wiggling a bit, attempting to find a position that wasn't too bad.

By the time the instructor intered, he had managed to find it, and he listened intently. This was the reason why they were here, though the rest was interesting as well, and he made a note of everything that she said. It was true that he hadn't ever thought of jewelry as being anything more than just decoration, but it made sense that they would have other uses.

Especially if there was FEAR involved.

He took the kit when it was handed to him, and opened it up. He had recieved Copper Wire, and the instructions on how to make a Hairpin. It wasn't quite what he would have liked, but it would do, and he began to shape the wire carefully.

"You are doing well, Ree," his familar whispered, from his place underneath the Warlock's hat. He wasn't loud enough for anyone else to hear, but the reassurance was welcome.

He finished up forming the wire into the pin, and then waited, glancing around at the other students to see how they were doing.

Somehow Aurian found her way to the room that would be used for their actual class. Jewelcrafting sounded like fun. Aurian wasn't much for accessorising, but something told her that a clan like Death would be about more than just looking pretty. In any case, she hadn't been able to pass up the opportunity to spend a week with a clan who used to be Reapers (a very, very long time ago, or so people said).

The room was mostly empty, so Aurian slipped down to the front and took a seat. She wanted the best view she could get, and this way people who came later wouldn't be crawling over others to find a seat.

Something about the room (or the stately instructor) advised Aurian to stay quiet. When the Clanswoman (Clansghoul? Aurian needed to check the correct terminology) began speaking, Aurian paid strict attention. The idea of holding FEAR within the gems was intriguing. It could certainly be useful in battle.

Small velvet pouches were handed out. Aurian accepted hers with tentative care. Placing it on her lap, she opened the pouch and began lifting out the contents. Along with a small tool for crafting, Aurian had received gold wire and the schematics for a brooch. After looking at the instructions, Aurian's lips flattened as she nodded consideringly. She could do this. (Probably.)

As Moure quietly entered the room, he was hit with the overwhelming...lack of anything, really. Other than the necessities, there wasn't much in here. He sighted on the seating areas, and quickly took a seat front and center in the first row, along with a few other students. He would glean as much information on the ways of Jewelcrafting as he possibly could. After wearing that circlet, he'd seen just an inkling of what that power could do.

He sat attentively as their teacher came forward and spoke to them. He was silent, simply watching and trying to learn everything he could from her as she spoke. What he'd experienced was probably just one of many amazing effects that Jewelcrafting could do...

The kits were brought forward, and Moure recieved his. The velvet was soft in his hand, a plush container for precious contents. Quietly, waiting until some of the others had started opening theirs, he gently pulled his kit open.

Inside was a thin wire of shining gold, which would be an amazing material to work with. It was probably very malleable, so he'd need to be careful. There were also some basic schematics for what looked to be a bracelet. He looked it over, curiosity on his face for a moment before melding into one of some awe, both for the Horsemen themselves and for what they could create.

Mitsu had found her way to the jewel crafting class and quickly took a seat. Normally she was a good student and sat near the front but opted instead for somewhere near the middle. Once everyone was settled she listened to the teacher explain about the jewels and how they were more than just for show and decoration. It seemed they actually had a purpose.

Patiently the lycan waited for her kit, curiously opening the little velvet bag to look at the contents. She set them out in front of her neatly on the black velvet arranging the tool so it would be easy to grasp, the wire in the middle and the instructions off to the side. It seemed she would be making a bracelet of some sort.

[Kit: Silver Wire, Ring]

Lumi spied a boil sitting a few rows down from her opening his pouch to reveal silver wire and a ring. Her ears perking up slightly she wondered if she could ask him really nicely if he'd be willing to trade with her. After quickly and efficiently putting all the contents back in to the velvet pouch she made her way down to the boil. Her voice very low and soft,

"Uhm...Hi...I'm Lumi..."

Great time to find a shy streak she thought. Looking down at her pouch then back at the boil,

"Uhm, I was wondering if possibly you would be willing to trade your pouch for mine? I mean..."

She fidgeted with her own necklace, and tried again,

"I have a silver necklace schematics if you'd like to possibly trade with me."

Blushing slightly at her inability to ask a simple question she sat down quickly and quietly next to him waiting for a response.

Imryn floated into the class room and slowly headed over to one of the seats, taking in as much as she could before sitting down. True, there wasn't much there in the way of decorations or really... anything... in the classroom, but sometimes less was more and Imryn was hoping that was the case. For the time being, she didn't seem much of anything that could help them with crafting jewlery of any kind but then class was just getting started.

All her attention was focused on the instructor once she began to speak, feeling a little irritated at the attitude that most of the Horsemen seemed to have taken towards them... but none the less, she'd work hard on this. There was no reason that any of them couldn't do this well, and as Imryn got her pouch and opened it up to reveal the contents, she grinned a little. A necklace huh... this would be do able. Even just something simple and well done, as it seemed that the emphasis was more on the gem than the actual setting... but she could be wrong.

After taking a few moments to study the instructions she got to work on bending and shaping the metal as shown, hoping that it would turn out as close to the desired product as possible.

He heard a voice and then turned his head to see a ghoul talking to him. One he hadn't seen around campus before but then he could say that about Ev and many of the other ghouls as well so he just greeted her with his usual grin, "I am Kettil and this is Endzela," he nodded down to the Owl on his lap and then he waited for the request she seemed to have.

Trade ring for necklace. Hmm.

Endzela gave him a smug-eyed look which made him put a hand over the Owl's face so he didn't have to guess what she was thinking, "Sure, ghouly! If that is what you prefer," he was still chipper as he offered over his pouch for the trade.

Necklaces might be less trouble than rings. Mhm!
