User ImageTal had been watching these pridelands for some time. She had wanted to find a home for a long time and this pride had seemed strong and sheltering. They were definitely fighters that was for sure. She was still unsure what kind of place she might find for herself in the pride, but she wanted to enter the lands and become part of it. It should be simple right? Walk in and say hello to someone, find out if she can stay. Or what is required to stay.

It should have been simple but she was slightly nervous and edgy. She had never done anything like this before and she would have to be prepared for anything really. Just because she had watched them did not mean she knew their ways or what they would expect of her. It was enough to get her on guard and watching around her like a prey animal that smelled lion. But she would not run. She would see this through, and not turn back.

User ImageVol's amber eyes were narrowed against the sun as it shone directly into them. He was supposed to be patrolling the pride's borders, and so he was, but his stretch of borderland was pretty barren in terms of foliage, and so as he walked eastward the sun was in his eyes. The Stormborn was in a place that tended to have morning mists, but as summer set in the mists lifted earlier and earlier in the day. Vol missed them.

There should have been improved visibility without mists, but because he was walking into the sun that was pretty much nonexistent, and so Vol didn't see the black and white lioness until he was almost right on top of her. So much for being a great fierce reaver. His growl was more directed toward his own inattention than the lioness, but it didn't bother him if she was alarmed by it.

"Come to try your skills against real warriors, or to submit to thralldom?" he asked in a voice like gravel.

Tal paused when she spotted the big lion coming toward her. She pulled herself up as far as she could, but she was not nearly as big as the male. It at least made her look like less the scared prey and more the proud lioness, even if she was smallish. Or was he just huge? She was not sure she wanted to know the answer to that, but at the same time, she was curious to see if the whole pride was so large. It had been very hard to judge their size from a safe distance, especially with their border patrols making sure someone didn't sneak in unannounced.

The lioness tilted her head to the side at the growl. Was he growling at her? Really! She was just about to say something when he issued his little challenge. She nearly laughed from the mix of nerves and being offended. He wanted to fight? She guessed so. "I am not sure what a thralldom is, but I don't like the sound of 'submitting' to anything, especially not something I've never heard of. If it is a fight you want, I would rather not, but I certainly can oblige if that is what it will take to get me inside your pride." She wondered if this was going to end with her dead. She hoped not.

"You think you can win a fight against me? You?" Vol laughed, his bad humor instantly evaporating at the little lioness's ridiculous supposition. Vol shook his head, pitying the fool.

"Very well. Let's get this over with, then," he said. "I have a patrol to get back to, and I don't like to be late on my rounds."

He did not anticipate this would take very long. She didn't look like she would make much of a warrior. Even so, she was not unattractive and perhaps if she lost he might suggest that she return with him as his thrall. Maybe he'd promise to free her or something. Not that he ever would, of course, but it was a thought.

He prowled a short distance away and sat down, to all appearances without any intention of moving. Then he told her, "Attack whenever you feel like it."

Tal giggled at the male. He seemed so sure of himself and it just was too funny. He was going to make her fight or submit, but he thought himself so big and mighty. "Even if I did not think I could win against you, why would I do anything but my best toward that end?" She giggled again and shook her head. So full of himself. Maybe she would stand more of a chance than she thought. His confidence could very well be his downfall. She would have to keep her eyes open for an opportunity to use his doubt of her to her own advantage.

Tal took a deep breath to get herself calmed and ready. The male was not going to let her pass without fighting, so she might as well give it her all. "You may be late for your rounds, you may not... we shall see." She rushes forward and tries to make for one side and then duck for more of the center as she had a little too much speed going to completely readjust her angling to the other direction. She tried to take a swipe at the paws of the male.

"You could hope for another opponent," Vol suggested. "One of less skill than I."

But it seemed she would not be taking that prudent course. Instead she charged him and made ready to swipe at him. From his seated position he was significantly less mobile than he would have been ordinarily, and that wasn't even taking into consideration the stiffness he'd been feeling in his hips the past few mornings as age slowly crept up on him.

Her attack on his paws was successful, but fortunately the bone claws he wore over his left forepaw served at least a little to protect him from that attack, though it was not completely effective. Instead he was forced to shuffled awkwardly backward, and even that was too little, too late. A half-hearted partial defense at best.

As she finished her pass Vol decided it was his turn and with a snarl he turned and slashed after the black and white female.

Tal couldn't help giggling at the male as he continued to speak so highly of himself. Even with him following her back as she retreated from her assault, she was giggling a little. She took a few swipes from him as she retreated and wondered if pride was well placed in himself or if she was going to get a chance to use it against him. The assault on his paws had gone better than she had actually thought it would, but he was coming at her rather strong. Well, it was win or not get to enter the pride. She would push on just for the chance.

She was at least heartened by the success if only partial of her first pass at him. He looked a bit older than she, perhaps his age was catching up to him? Or old injuries... or the sun. She did have the sun at her back. She moved to keep it that way and make sure that she was low enough to not be a sun block of any sort for him. Didn't want to help him win by keeping the sun from his eyes! That would just be stupid of her.

The lioness's giggles irked Voldemaras far more than the minor injuries she had inflicted on his paws. She was not taking this seriously, and she ought to be. It didn't occur to him that this was an incredibly unfair stance for him to take, given the fact that he wasn't taking the fight seriously. But he was a Stormborn reaver and she was an outlander female. She should be worried. Stormlords' balls! She should be more than worried. She should be terrified.

Maybe the giggling was a hysterical reaction, and she actually was terrified. It mollified Vol to think of her laughter in that respect and prevented him from working up such a temper that he might actually decide to hurt her, rather than go along with his current plan, which was to knock her about a bit so that she would realize she had no place fighting him or any other Stormborn. She was a female, and a foolish one at that, to be so evidently pleased by one partially-successful attack which could only have produced minor results at best.

Of, course, she might not be all that foolish. She did seem to be aware of the sun's position and the aid it lent her in this encounter as Vol had to constantly squint to see her as anything more than a silhouetted figure. He huffed and shook his head so that his mane would shade his eyes at least partially. It wasn't very effective, but it did no harm. He certainly wasn't hindered by a few strands of hair across his field of vision.

"You're not taking this seriously," he observed. "If you aren't sure you want to be here, you probably shouldn't be."

Tal chuckled at this last. "Not taking this seriously? You have it backwards. I am taking the fight and the idea of earning my way into this pride I have been watching, quite seriously... I take you and your fighting ability quite seriously." The lioness dodged in to try and take his paws out from under him and tried a quick swat at his butt while she was at it. She retreated again and made sure the sun was at her back. She giggled again and watched the male. "But your arrogance and blatant disregard and disrespect of what ability I may or may not have is amusing to me."

The lioness dances back, letting the male follow her and take swipes at her. A few of them would land, she was sure of that, but a few scratches would heal. She started looking for where she wanted to take her next strike. She was thinking if she could use her small size to dart in under his belly she might be able to flip him on his side. That might work rather well to her advantage, especially if she could get out of the way before he go his claws up into her from underneath.

Vol sidestepped with his hind quarters to avoid her attempted swat at his rump. There were some things a reaver would not tolerate, and being swatted on the bottom by an impish outlander female was among them. Her good humor did not amuse him or lighten his mood. If anything, it irritated him more. If she knew he wasn't taking her seriously, she ought to be insulted and not amused.

He did not follow her when she danced backward. She was using the sun against him and he didn't appreciate it any more than he appreciated her attitude, though at least it was a somewhat decent tactic in a fight like this, where she was obviously outclassed. He didn't think she would win this fight, no matter how clever she was.

"Stormlords' balls," Vol muttered. "Enough of this. You're not going to win against me, but that's really just bad luck on your part. If you'd come up against one of the other lions on patrol you might have stood a better chance. You do seem to have some grasp of strategy, or at least an innate sense of self-preservation."

Where was he going with this? His mouth was moving and making word-sounds without much input from his brain here. In fact, a large part of his brain was in deep conversation with his stomach, discussing how long it had been since the last time he ate and how long it would be until he got to eat again. The answer to the first question was approximately six hours. The answer to the second depended on how quickly he could dispose of this obnoxious female.

"I'm off duty in approximately five minutes, after which I plan to find food whether or not we've finished here. So my recommendation is that you come back to the pride with me and keep your mouth shut about this whole affair. You're in the pride. Congratulations."

Tal discontinued her attacks when the male did not follow her retreat. When he spoke, she saw a little sense showing in his words. Most of what she saw was wounded pride, but there was some sense in there too, she was sure of it. The lioness sat on her haunches and groomed one of her paws. "The rogue lands are not as safe as some might think. Self-preservation and some strategy are necessary if one wishes to get anywhere in life." She wondered if the male would take a meal with her as an apology for wounding his little pride in himself. At least she had gotten into the pride like she wanted.

Tal got up and went over to the male. "I can help with the finding food part if it will make you feel better about leading me back to the pride." She stretches and sits beside him now. She would have no problem with the idea of going back to the pride with him so long as he did not try to make her 'submit to thralldom' like he had mentioned earlier. The usually sweet lioness did not like the sound of that in the least. Whether or not he took the offer for food, she hoped the male didn't hold the fight against her.

He began walking at a brisk pace. Having spent so many years patrolling the pride's borders, Vol knew exactly how long it took him to walk any part of the circuit, and he usually paced himself accordingly. This encounter had come at such a time that if he was to finish his rounds before his watch ended, he would have to move quickly.

Vol snorted dismissively at her friendliness. "There are thralls for that," he said without looking back. He just assumed the lioness would follow him. How else did she think she would get into the pride, after all?

"Don't think we're friends. You'll be considered a freeborn in the pride for this. any further rank or prestige you will have to earn for yourself. That is how things are done here. Honor is earned."
