The District 8 Justice Building & Town Center

This is where any number of things happen. Where the town gossips meet to talk, where friends get together to hang out, and where people go if they just want friendly conversation. But, it is also the place where criminals are put on trial, men and woman are executed and where the District gathers to hear the names of the latest Tributes.

Kamryn Leila Rosethorn DISTRICT 8

Being parent-less on a day like this sucked. Not only did I receive no well wishes, I was robbed of ever having a comforting hug. The reaping was a miserable ceremony for me, and there was nothing more that I hated than going about this process on my own. I wished that I had at least one family member to help me get through my life with some form of support, but I knew that would never happen, and I usually let my smart mouth ruin my chances of friendship, although that one day in the forest where I met that boy Brion seemed a little promising, but I haven't seen him since. After passing a few playful banters, we had gone our separate ways and that was pretty much it in terms of socialization since then. It wasn't good that I felt so miserable today, because I often looked at the facts that I had nobody in my life to live for, and I was always tempted to volunteer in place of another tribute. Maybe this year I'd do it, and save someone the loss of their child, sister, or brother. I'd love to see the shocked look of surprise on their faces as they realize that their lives were saved, and who knows, maybe I'd survive the games and return back. Everyone would know my name then, and maybe the girl that I had saved would become my friend as well as more of the townspeople. It'd be nice to be seen as someone other than that orphan girl who was always sneaking about.

My wishes might be granted soon, for our district representative had just stepped on the stage, giving us her lovely speech about the games that doomed so many children in the games. I hated the games for what they did to us, and the pain that they caused. I hated the Capitol in general, not only because of their stupid rules that ended my parents lives, but because of their nature in general. These people fed off horrible deaths and violence towards children and it was sickening. How could these people live with themselves? Although I had wished for their life of luxury, I knew I couldn't live like them and become numb towards death. I was human.

Dottie blinked, she had been standing there for about ten minutes and her parents hadn't come yet. She could only guess they had wanted to stay home and have one of their private chats, ones that she never heard. Her eyes scanned a few people as a small headache formed in her head. She always felt sick on reaping day, it was a simple fact that had never once given her peace. She remembered walking by a T.V in a store window once, on screen was a replay of the Hunger games. The contestonts had been scrawny, and their eyes were streaked with red, a wild look one might say. Dottie never thought about this, keeping her loyalty to Panem safe from the Hunger games aching claws. Dottie looked down at the ground, ignoring the sound around her, solely focused on an ant crawling by. For a moment, Dottie wished she could be an ant too, they never worried, and they were loyal without waver. She smiled slightly, realizing the childishness of her thought, it seems to be comforting.

Gilton froze. There was no way he was pulled. How on earth was he pulled? He was the mayor's son. Maybe it was the fact that he was so mean to other people. Maybe a group of kids got together and stuffed the Reaping Ball with his name. There was absolutely no way he could get pulled. He didn't move, he looked around at the kids around him. Surely someone would volunteer right? No one was that cruel...

Still he made his way, slowly to the stage. Sweat sliding down his face, mixing with the tears that also slid their way down his cheeks.

The Reaping had struck fear in her heart from the moment her son was eligible to be picked, but so far he'd managed to slip by the Escort's hand. Ripley sat ramrod straight up behind where the Escort stood, wishing that she could have used her influence as Mayor to buy immunity for her children, but alas, it wasn't to be. Now she just had to sit here, hands clasped tightly in her lap and pray to whatever deity deigned it fit to listen that her son was not drawn from the hundreds of names already in the bowl.

But, alas, Gilton's immunity to the Games was not to be, for he was selected just after the girl. Ripley's world was almost instantly tore to pieces and there was an intense, pounding pressure behind her ears. Ripley caught her breath and shook her head, mouthing the word, 'no' silently to herself over and over again. As soon as she had heard her son's name, Ripley partially forgot that she was Mayor. After all, who could possibly sit there, cold and stoic as their world crashed down around their ears?

The tall woman pressed her hand against her lips and watched as her son made his way up to the front, looking just as terrified as Ripley felt. A tear streaked down Ripley's face and she moved to stand, but was stopped by the firm hand of a Peacekeeper on her shoulder. Ripley's thoughts then turned to her daughter, and how devastated the girl would be. At that moment Cherry needed her, but she was forbidden to move. Her watery eyes were glued on her son as the Escort rambled on about something, pain showing clearly in her light brown eyes.

Dottie felt a sigh of relief escape her lips. She hadn't been pulled. Dottie looked around the crowd, suddenly everything felt quiet, words never escaped a single person's lips. Under her jacket she felt herself shivering, she simply didn't understand why she felt so guilty. If you love Panem so much why didn't you get pulled? Hmm? You're such a filthy little thing hiding under that coat. They don't deserve to die, you do. Dottie sucked in her breath, keeping herself frozen on the spot, keeping her mouth shut. She kept the thought of the suffering the contestonts would feel out of her head, She loved Panem, she kept repeating in her head. If only the words would stay there.

Gilton let a sigh of relief come out of his mouth, as the tears slid down his face. He looked at Brion. He never noticed the boy before, but this was his new priority. Never in a million years did Gilton believe he would be pulled, or for someone to volunteer for him. He locked eyes with Brion. His own eyes saying sorry a million different times over.

As the peacekeepers escorted him off stage he locked eyes with Missa, then with his mother. He could see the fear and shock on their faces. He took his place back with the kids his age. All eyes on him. Though his eyes stayed on Brion. He owed Brion his life....

I'M UNDECIDED. I DON'T KNOW WHO I AM.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

I'm standing on the spot that the peacekeepers had directed me to. Now is the time for all members of my District to go through the reaping, one of the most fearful days of the year. Over the past few months, my parents began to develop financial problems. We can barely feed ourselves anymore and things have gone completely depressing. It wasn't all that bad, though. I've met a new friend that assists me in the forest, trying to find anything edible we can. Even so, my family continues to struggle. Now is not the time to focus on this. If I keep on thinking about these thoughts, I can get reaped and not even know it.

Turns out that I'm not the one that ends up getting reaped. The mayor's son begins to take nervous steps towards the stage. Poor kid. I know that people complain on how much of a brat he can be with rules, but being sent to his death is too much of a punishment. That's when I get the idea. If I was to win the games. . .would my parents stop struggling? Not only can I support myself and my parents, but also Kamryn. All my troubles would go away. I think I have what it takes, my stealth is on such a high level that the children of the mayor did not hear me when I nearly ran into them at the forest. Not only that, but I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. But can I do it, can I have such faith in myself? Am I positive enough that I can make it out alive? The only way to know for sure is to step up. I just hope my parents can forgive me.

Awkwardly, I walk towards the empty path that leads to the stage; right behind the mayor's boy. "Um. . ." No one acknowledges me at first. This is quite common for me since not many people know who I am, just another reason why volunteering isn't all that bad. "Hey!" I speak up more angrily, all eyes on me now. I gulp loudly, not quite used to the attention. Being awkward once again, I raise my hand a little bit above my head. "I'd like to volunteer myself, um, please." Everyone looks bewildered, as if they can't believe what I had just said. This gives me a short amount of confidence as the Peacekeepers escort me towards the stage. I exchange one short glance with the boy.

"I volunteer." Dottie had tried, but her guilt had won the battle. She'd volunteered. She managed to walk up to the stage with pride, the only thing she could muster as people were eerily quiet. Ignorance deserves punishment she heard the voice in her head say. The only thing Dottie could do was manage a smile, feeling torn between the loyalty to herself, and what she had just done.

In the Justice Building.

Dottie sat alone on a small couch. She knew her parents weren't going to visit, she knew no one was going to visit. Dottie closed her eyes for a minute, letting what she had just done in to her mind to sink in. Her ignorance of everything was being punished fairly, at least in Dottie's eyes. If she did come home by some chance of a miracle, her parents would nolonger have to work as hard as they did, or even lift a finger for the matter. Dottie gave herself a soft smile, perhaps her death would be swift.

I'M UNDECIDED. I DON'T KNOW WHO I AM.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

The justice building has some of the most nicest rooms I have ever seen. I'm sitting on a comfortable red sofa when my parents walk in and bark at me immediately. They begin to question me and my methods of living; screaming at me so loud that the Peacekeepers came in to check on us. "We need the money. . ." I tell them calmly. This seems to take them aback, as if they never expected for someone so young to care about adult situations. "I know I have what it takes to make it far, mom." I talk to her mostly, knowing that it must be tougher for her since she's crying a lot more than I expected. Once I explain my strategy in the arena, they look at me in pure shock. Almost as if they don't know me. This isn't what I wanted. I expected my parents to disapprove, but not like this. My dad, however, speaks up and tells me to try hard to win. Suddenly, two pairs of arms are around me. It's so comforting, but I have to break apart from them. "This won't be goodbye, mom and dad. Even if it is, I hope you know that I've tried my best." I have more to say but I'm completely interrupted by Peacekeepers. They inform my parents that their time is up and ushers them out the door.

I now sit back and wait. The train ride into the Capitol won't be long, making it that much more difficult to grasp the fact of what I have done. Did I really volunteer to join the Hunger Games? If I was to die, will I be remembered? These are the thoughts that cloud my mind until an abrupt knock is heard at the door.
