☉It’s Too Late Now to Try and Anything ☉

//\ Sophie glanced nervously over at the clouds forming in the distance. She'd seem things like this before, happening around her school. She had other things to worry about most of the time, so they didn't really send off red flags until she noticed there was a pattern in their appearance. She sighed. She wasn't going over there now to check them out. She needed to retreat to her own little world. Recooperate, before she dealt with anybody.
//\ When she got into her room, she immediately stripped down to put something more comfortable on. That something happened to be a a mint colored tank top with watermelon colored words that read "it rubs the lotion on it's skin...", and a faded, dark blue janitors jumpsuit that had the leg's cut off and the hem re-sewn. She left her stockings on, since they didn't really bother her, then plopped onto her bed to do her homework. Her owl flittered over, resting on her head.
//\ "Pozdravi, Reznov." She said softly, petting the little hooter. He gave a coo of annoyance. that's right, he was mad at her. He had gone all day on the floor. She could never understand why the little bird preferred her head over anything else perch-like. He wouldn't even get on her bed if she wasn't there. It made her feel nice, though, that at least somebody depended on her. She furrowed her brow, shaking the negative thoughts away and turning back to her homework.
//\ Her ear twitched as she heard some commontion in a nearby dorm. But, it wasn't just a nearby dorm...it was a really nearby dorm. She shook her head. It wasn't any of her business, even if she did want to go check it out. It sounded like it might be a kind of party. Though she was curious, and she did have plenty of time to relax after class.

Can an angel shed its wings?

The train ride had been long, to long for Olivia's tastes. She was relieved when it finally stopped, and she could stand up without being thrown back down into her seat by the rush of the bullet train. It had been a pure hour of sitting in a seat, imagining things. Like she didn't do that all the time! At least her head was full of places to sketch.

Olivia opened the door to her dorm, towing all five bags of luggage. She looked around, somewhat dissapointed. She saw that one of the other two beds appeared to be already taken, but only one? Olivia sighed, somewhat disgruntled by the fact that she only had one roommate.... For now. She bet that most of the other students had two roommates. "Well... I guess I'll leave my stuff here.... And... I'm talking to air again." Olivia reached for the bags to unpack two objects. The first was her cat, Lunae's travel carrier, the second was her notebook and pencil.

After making sure that Lunae was comfortable on Olivia's bed, Olivia walked back through the doorway, art supplies in hand, ready to draw something.

Landon hopped eagerly off of the plane with two large luggage cases in tow. One of these cases had mesh sides and a large pocket modeled after a pet door. It had taken a lot of charisma to finagle Gran onboard with him instead of in the cargo bay, where he would surely cause mischief, but the Californian had done it. There would be no train-riding for him or his grizzly, despite the fact that this ‘Axis High’ had offered him a student ticket for free; the Californian preferred commuting his way--in style. He flashed a bright smile at the flight attendant, thanking her for everything she had done for him—which wasn’t much, really—and she swooned, collapsing onto the carpet with a thud. Landon smiled. It was easy, really, to charm people into doing anything he wanted. All he had to do was smile and brag a little. But he much preferred to call the latter exaggerating.

The Californian strode into the large campus, finding his way easily despite the lack of sun in the sky. He admired its intricate European façade as he went, but his attention was focused on his new domicile. Or, more precisely, his dorm-mates. Who would he be sharing his quarters with? Was he swag? Was she cute? Were both good listeners? The Californian had so many tales to tell, and he was itching to know. After all, if one or the other did not meet this minimal criteria, his stay here would be very dreary indeed.

Landon found the door he sought and fumbled for his key. The smaller of his two luggage cases started to squirm and make low snuffling sounds. Gran was getting hungry. He paused to let the hungry baby grizzly bear out and rummaged in another pocket on the same case for a packet of dried salmon. This he opened, selecting one fillet to give to the bear. Gran chowed down with gusto, and Landon finally found his key.

Unlocking the room, he stepped inside. Two of three beds were already occupied, and upon seeing which bed was his, he wrinkled his nose. Judging from the miscellanea littering both beds, his dorm-mates were girls, and boring girls at that. Even worse, they had left him the bed closest to the bathroom! The divan nearest the window was strewn with stuffy-looking clothes, a watermelon-scented lotion, textbooks, … and owl feed. From the stuffiness of the clothes, he guessed that this girl was from Central Europe. The other had a depression in it that was currently occupied by one of Landon’s Southern sisters, the pink-haired Arkansas girl, Olivia. The country girl was sketching her kitten—Lunae, was it? Landon had never quite remembered—as it slept peaceably in a basket. Thankfully, Gran knew better than to eat other students’ pets.

It was too dark to go swim, so Landon supposed he had to stay put in this room. He might as well make the best of things while he was here, so he attempted to strike up a conversation with his sister. “Hi, Olivia!” he said brightly, sitting down next to her. “Long time, no see! How are things in Arkansas?”

Hopefully, he could embellish this little chat with one of his fantastic tales. But he needed an opening to do so. And so Landon waited for Olivia to look up from her meticulous sketch and answer.

Out of San Francisco: Hello! I'm Nintendraw, and my character, Landon Blackwell Jones/California is your last dorm-mate! He loves to tell tales and is Hollywood vain, so don't blow him off too may times! (Or at least not this first time. || PH, I also RP Romero, who is at the same party Sophie is. Is Sophie still there? She hasn't appeared for many pages already, and we're making pinatas and fighting off ghosts in there.

// At some point in the party, Sophie had become quite overwhelmed with the events, and Reznov was pecking furiously at her head. It was hard for her to try and communicate with the others while she was being assaulted by her overzealous pet, even if the party was way fun. She quietly slipped out in the middle of the action and sighed when she got out.
// She yanked her hood down and glared up at the owl, who simply avoided her gaze smugly. "When I rule this world, you will be the first to die and I promise it will be slow and painful..." she muttered as she entered her room across the hallway. She stopped in her tracks, however, seeing that there were two more occupants in her room. Her eyebrows went up, much like her smile. She wasn't to let anyone see her not smiling, that would be rude.
// She looked over at the girl, who was sketching on her bed. A small cat was there, too. She paid no mind to this, and thought she may ask the girl to see the sketch later. She also hoped the cat wouldn't eat Reznov...boy that would be tragic. The second occupant made her uneasy. It was a boy with sandy golden locks, and he radiated charisma.
// Now you may be wondering why on earth Sophie would become uneasy around such a warm person. Well, it was because warm just wasn't her thing. Sophie was always cold, despite being a fire user. However, she was never too quick to judge, even though her ability to read people was more than well off. She smiled at the both of them.
// "Pozdravi." She said in an open, friendly manner. "You two are new dorm mates, da? How wonderful. My name is Sophie, and I am Croatia." She said. Sophie took a seat on her bed as Reznov flittered down and circled around the young man's ankles; the bird's way of sizing up the stranger. She bit her lip and gave him a sweet smile. "That is Reznov. I think I can speak for the both of us when I ask who you two are." She remarked, a small mischievious glint in her wide, meadowy eyes. Her accent was thick, but her voice was sweet and rather airy. She felt awfully flirty right now, but perhaps that was leftover from the party.

Landon jumped at the female voice coming from a strange direction. Had Olivia learned how to throw her voice? But when he looked up, he found that it was his other dorm mate, the stuffy central European. She had brown hair that fell to the middle of her back, wire-rimmed glasses, and a small owl perched atop her head. Landon was pleased to note that she hadn’t actually dressed as stuffily as the clothes he’d seen on her bed would presume her to be—she was actually dressed much like any high-schooler he had seen around his state.

She greeted him in her native language. Or at least he presumed it was a greeting. Of course, the tongue was one that the Californian had never heard before. Then she switched to English, introducing herself as Sophie and asking him and Olivia if they were her dorm-mates, and answered the question herself, once again in her own tongue. Her accent was thick, but at least it was understandable; and Landon now had the girl’s name and nationality.

Croatian, hmm? He’d have to check his map again, because he’d plumb forgot where that country was…

“Yup! We’re all dorm-mates Isn’t it odd how this school doesn’t separate by gender? I know most of our schools do,” Landon answered, not really minding Axis High’s lack of gender segregation. The fad was growing popular in his state anyways; maybe this was where they got the idea from. But before the Californian could continue with his tale, he felt something light and feathery brush his ankle and jolted, looking down as he did. Sophie’s owl had departed her head and was now circling about his ankles, which he had extended from the bed in an effort to stretch them.

The Croatian laughed airily at his discomfiture. “That is Reznov,” she said, “and I think I can speak for the both of us when I ask who you two are.”

Gran chose that moment to stare up at her. He held her suddenly frightened gaze for a solid minute, sizing her up, before grunting and turning hungrily towards the little owl.

Landon had to laugh at that, even as he scolded the baby grizzly between chuckles. “No, Gran; the owl is not for eating. Neither is the cat.” With an effort, Landon ignored the inquisitive avian and turned his sunniest smile on Sophie. “Certainly! I’m Landon Blackwell Jones, from California, and that is my sister from the Heartland, Olivia. How did you come to Axis High?” he asked. “It didn’t take me long at all.” He had already noted that Sophie’s cheeks were rosy for a reason he suspected was not at all related to physical exertion. Perhaps she would be more willing to listen to his wonderful tales than his recalcitrant sister. This he thought with a frown at the country girl, who was still focused on her meticulous sketch of Lunae. If she continues like that, it won’t be a sketch anymore…

// When the bear looked up at her, her mouth opened, then shut, then the motion repeated. ....Was there really a bear staring up at her? Was that allowed? A bear was NOT like a human; a bear's emotions where hard to read, and currently, all Sophie could read was hungry. Then again, she only assumed it because it was, after all, a bear. Then, it turned to Reznov, and a jolt of adrenaline shot through her, but then she quickly realized she didn't care.
// Americans...both of her room mates where Americans. She didn't mind that, actually, she was fascinated. She had never even spoken to an American state before, and now she was rooming with two of them! Albeit she was still going to treat them the same, even if they did amuse her a bit more than normal countries did.
// She smiled as her owl came back to her, and sat on her head, giving a disgruntled hoot as it eyed the bear. She herself would have to get used to living with...a bear. What about when it got bigger? Surely the Californian considered it, right? Well, no matter.
// "Landon...one of the United states presidents had those initials, yes?" She asked. She remembered learning about it when she was younger. Really, it was less of learning and more of drilling. She shook the thought away quickly, not wanting to seem spaced out at all. "I came on a plane, actually. I would have taken the train, but my big brother said it would be a waste of time. What about yourself?" She asked.
// She managed to pull out her spell paper and began cutting it into little strips. The owl began to fall asleep, but still had it's eyes locked onto the bear, cautious as ever. A small flame pushed itself to the surface of her finger as she began scribbling rune-like symbols into the paper. Though she was concentrated vaguely on the spell paper, her focus was still towards Landon. She was a little curious about him, after all he was American.

Landon grinned at her discomfiture. Indeed, Gran usually evoked that face from those who had never seen him before. “You don’t need to worry about Gran at all, Sophie,” he told her. “He’s perfectly tame. I found him when he was just a cub, abandoned when hunters shot and killed his mother. With all the blood he had on him, they thought he was dead. He’s been with me ever since I picked him up and nursed him back to health.”

He paused when the Croatian asked him about his name and initials. Observant of her to notice! The Californian’s smile got a bit wider as he answered, for it was a little tidbit of information he was quite proud of. Then again, there wasn’t much in his state that he wasn’t proud of, but that was beside the point. “Yes, ma’am! Lyndon Baines Johnson was our thirty-sixth president, and one of four who served in all the executive houses. He held positions in our House of Representatives, our Senate, our Vice Presidency, and of course, the presidency. Alas, he was from Texas, not California.” At that, he evinced minor irritation. “A pity that that good-for-nothing wrangler got one of the better presidents we’ve ever had.”

Sophie nodded in acknowledgement and, answering his question about arrival, proceeded to reverse the question and inquire as to how he got here. Interesting that she had arrived by plane as well; he had thought she would choose the train. “You took the plane? So did I!” Landon said, pleased. He had honestly thought she would take the train. “It took a lot of bargaining to get Gran on board with me, but that was easy. The airline’s fault for hiring an entirely female group on as flight attendants, really—all I had to do was smile and ask politely to let him on the plane, and they fell into line quite nicely. He was so well-behaved, too. Not a peep came out of him at all through the flight; most people thought I had a heavy fur coat in there.” Landon laughed at the memory. Those passengers were so gullible.

As he concluded his brief little plane story, the Californian noticed that Sophie had taken out some ornate paper and was now cutting it into smaller pieces. He watched her work a little longer, and was surprised to see a small jet of flame escape her extended pinky as she scribbled something incomprehensible on it.

So she was a magic-user as well? Landon decided to have a little fun with her. Concentrating, he raised his index finger and pointed. A narrow jet of water shot out in the indicated direction, drenching the owl. It woke up, hooting angrily at him and shaking itself, and the excess water dripped down Sophie’s brown locks, falling onto the spare sheets of paper on her lap. He wondered how she would react. Back home, all his brothers—and a few of his sisters—joked around like this, when they weren’t making racial jokes or teasing each other about their various physical faults. But if Sophie was as stuffy as he thought, she might actually get mad at him.

Nothing a smile and a kiss couldn’t cure, right?

// Before she could realize what had happened, Reznov shot out of his place, his tiny talons yanking her hair a little as he fluttered about frantically, and then plopped to the floor in an angry heap. He flapped the water away from his wings, then followed up his angry hoot with a screech before waddling away, under the bed, pissed as he was at the new room mate. She stifled a laugh, then caught herself.
// He had just shot water, right? Yes, because the flame on her little finger sizzled out, and when she went to feel the spot on her head, it was wet. She glanced up at him, then down at her spell paper. Her eyebrows pulled further away from her eyes as she saw the water soaking into her extra spell pages. She didn't have to look back up at him to know he was awaiting her reaction.
// She blinked, and glanced up at him, her meadowy green eyes locking onto his own baby blues. Then a small smile played at her mouth as she puckered her lips, her fingers heating up as they pressed against them. She blew him a kiss, a spark popping away from her lips and forming a small flame. It glided towards him, ghosting across his golden bangs, and then disappearing behind his head. That should give him a surprise.
// Then, a light blush dusted her cheeks. What did she just do? What on earth was the point of that? How improper. She simply smiled, shrugging as if it wasn't a big deal, though she was hitting her knuckles with a ruler inside her head. Her family would disown her for such behavior. They almost disowned her for carrying around that rusty old channel post. Her gaze shifted to her pretty little weapon, which was wedged vertically between the wall and her bed.

He had expected sorrow. He had expected rage. He had expected any one of a slew of negative reactions, but Landon was completely unprepared for the warm kiss Sophie blew him. For once, the chatty Californian was silent, at a loss for words. Normally, he was the one blowing the kisses, not the other way around. So he merely sat there, dumbfounded, as the small flame she’d sent at him gently singed his hair and dissipated behind him.

Then she blushed, glancing at the strange and very pointy-looking stick wedged behind her bed. Landon followed her gaze, and he smiled. Now this was more like what he had expected. Before she could make a move for the fierce-looking stave, he swept her up in his arms and kissed her back, enveloping them both in a bubble that floated out of the bedrooms and into the kitchen. The effect was staggering, as always, but he was certain that it would have a much stronger effect on the stuffy Croatian than on him.

At last, the bubble dissolved, depositing him and Sophie gently on the linoleum floor. Conversation seemed wholly unimportant after that, so he turned on the stove and began cooking a bit of his famous San Francisco clam chowder, pouring enough ingredients in for two bowls. He hadn’t eaten much since lunch, and if Sophie didn’t want her bowl, it was her choice. Landon made sure to remain facing her, for he didn’t want to come off as timid. “Enough about us,” he said airily. “What’s Croatia like?”

// Out of every little thing she could have possibly expected, that reaction was certainly not one of them. She didn't even have time to think he may react even stronger before he began to carry out his devious little plot. That's all she could really describe what he just did as...a plot. But, that may just be her constant suspicion of people. She shifted her weight, glancing down at the floor.
// "Dobar je Bog..." She muttered. She was glad the pesky little owl hadn't stuck around for that one. This time she waited for the color to drain from her face before she glanced back up at him, her attention caught by a mixture of the stove clicking on, and his talking. She smiled, but not at what he'd said. It was the way he stood, facing her while he cooked. This young man was very good...she'd have to be better.
// "Croatia...it's warm and very beautiful. The people are relaxed, but proper. There is a lot of wine there, too. I would say it's a great place to be, but I'm inclined to believe that is a biased opinion." She replied thoughtfully. The last time she was there, her brother made her attend a farewell dinner in which the whole neighborhood was invited.
// "What about California?" She asked. She wanted to know if the state was anything like how America was, or if the other states where all alike. Naturally, she'd never been, so she was rather curious. Though, it didn't seem like Landon was anything like his sister.

“California, hmm?” Landon pondered how best to condense his magnificent state into a few sentences. How should he begin? There were so many things he could talk about. Should he mention Hollywood? The Golden Gate Bridge? Mount Shasta? Lake Tahoe? Disneyland? Napa? After what was probably a lengthy pause, the Californian settled on a summary of the whole. “California’s climate is wonderfully variable, which makes for many people and many tourists. If you prefer summer climates, you can move down south, where the temperature never drops below 75 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re a more wintry type, Lake Tahoe has snow almost year-round, and you can ski no matter what month you come. Our Central Valley is home to mild climes and the best wines in all of America.” He smiled fondly, remembering his many, many trips to Napa made just for those wines. “Even tourists have a fun time there; you can always find them clustered in Disneyland, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood, or elsewhere. I’ve been told that we all sound like we came out of Hollywood. But, like you, I think my opinion of California is a very biased one. You really ought just to come visit and see for yourself.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Landon saw the clam chowder begin to boil violently. He turned off the stove with one hand before turning around to ladle it into three bowls, just in case Olivia decided to finish her sketch and eat as well. After snagging a loaf of sourdough bread from a fresh pocket in his luggage, he offered his companion a slice and a bowl. “Would you like some world-famous San Francisco clam chowder?” he asked.

// She took the bowl gingerly, feeling it would be rude if she didn't. "Clam chowder, hm? I don't remember having it since I was very little." She mumbled. "Hey, wait, San Francisco?" She asked. She was sure she'd heard something about the place before, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
// "I've heard of the place...a lot of very good music comes from San Francisco." Reznov came waddling out at the smell of food. He glanced warily at Landon, then fluttered up to her arm, crawling up her wrist and to her fingers to crane his neck and smell the bread. He pecked at the sides, glaring at Landon any time he moved or breathed, but remained nibbling on her bread. She didn't seem to notice, and if she did, she didn't care.
// "Oh!" She remarked, jerking her hand up. Reznov hooted, grabbing a large chunk of bread as he fell from her hand and once again landed on the floor with a plop. Again, she didn't seem to care about this at all. "San Francisco is the American city with all of the gay people, right?" She asked, but then blushed, realizing that may not be the correct way to ask that question. "Not that I have an issue with such, I just remember it being identified as a very homosexual friendly community." She mumbled.

Landon Blackwell Jones

Landon had been spooning up some chowder when Sophie asked about his bay’s gays, and the question caught him so off guard that he gagged before swallowing. Reznov had fallen to the floor again after eating some of the Croatian’s bread, which had for the large part remained untouched. It seemed that the bird wasn’t very flight-capable; maybe that was why he sat on heads so much. Landon wiped his eyes, which had teared up as a result of the near-choking, just in time to catch Sophie’s blush at making that unexpected inquiry.

The Californian met her question with a lengthy explanation after he had sufficiently cleansed his mouth of chowder. “When we first got involved in World War Two, it was because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, as you may know already. As a result of that, everyone sought revenge against Kiku’s people—understandable, but misguided, since the more dangerous enemy was Germany—and every able man enlisted in the army. But our anti-Japanese scare had also spread to gays, and many of them were discharged dishonorably in San Francisco.” He himself had no problem with his gay population; after all, it was probably the best they could get after everything the military had done to them in the World War II anti-American scare. At least Alfred hadn’t discharged them in Kansas or Oklahoma; otherwise, he could have had quite a riot on his hands.

Landon hadn’t heard anything from Gran in a while, which was unusual for the little grizzly. Normally, Gran was rather expressive when he was with his human friend. When he peeked around the corner to check, Landon found that the fuzzball was zonked out… right in the middle of his bed.

Ay caramba…” The Californian did not relish the thought of having to haul the bear off. Gran was rather irritable when rudely awakened.

Out of San Francisco: "Ay caramba" = "Oh, gosh"

// Well that was a new one. She hadn't really reasoned the idea of a lot of gay people in San Francisco. She just figured it was the most gay friendly city in America, like how Sweden was supposed to be the most gay friendly country in Europe. She was actually glad to know there was a reason behind it, though, because she didn't figure there would be.
// However, something he said did stick out to her. Dishonorably discharged. She wasn't sure if it was as unpleasant as it sounded. To her it sounded like they where shunned or disgraced, but that couldn't be it, right? No, she was sure it wasn't as bad it was made out to be. Probably just...discharged without honor.
// She was snapped out of her thoughts by his words, words that she couldn't understand, but had heard in some comedies before. She never really knew what it meant, but she could tell it was an expression of exasperation. She looked over in the direction he was looking and smiled. That little bear thing was laying on his bed, and...he didn't seem to happy about it."What do you plan on doing when your pet becomes big?" She asked.
